What is involved in installing the M-6687-A351 windage tray?

Please read all of the following instructions carefully prior to installation. The M-6687-A351 windage tray requires hand fitting to the engine assembly. The crankshaft scraper must be ground with a handheld die grinder to clear the crankshaft counterweights. A close fit is necessary to obtain maximum benefit from the windage tray. This process is not too difficult with the engine on an engine stand; however, if the engine is in a vehicle, it will be a little awkward.

What is the suggested procedure for installing the M-6687-A351 windage tray?

Remove the oil pan and oil pump pick-up tube.

Remove the number 2 and number 4 main cap bolts and replace with the four special fasteners supplied with the windage tray. Torque the bolts to 105 ft./lbs.

Paint the windage tray scraper with Machinist Blue or a similar marking compound.

Set the tray in place on the studs. The slotted holes will allow the tray to slide sideways to clear the crankshaft. Hold the tray against the crank with light pressure as you turn the crank. This will leave witness marks in the Machinist Blue. Grind the marked areas and refit the tray. Repeat the process until the scraper has .050″in clearance to the crank and rods with the tray centered over the crank. Hand tighten the nuts provided.

Trial fit the oil pan to insure it clears the windage tray. If it does not clear, repeat the step of removing additional material from the scraper.

Material may also have to be ground around the slotted holes for socket clearance.

After all clearancing is completed, smooth all edges. Reinstall the oil pump pick-up screen and tube assembly. Tighten windage tray nuts. Reinstall oil pan.
