Perform the following procedure to initialize the CASIO FX-82SX PLUS, which clears the calculation mode and all other settings back to their initial defaults.

Press SHIFT, then press MODE (CLR), then press 3 (All), and finally press = (Yes).

Battery

Keep batteries out of the reach of small children.

Use only the type of battery specified for this calculator in this manual.

Before using this calculator, slide its hard case downwards to remove it, and then affix the hard case to the back of the calculator.

Even if the calculator is operating normally, replace the battery at least once every three years. A dead battery can leak, causing damage to and malfunction of the calculator. Never leave a dead battery in the calculator. The battery that comes with the calculator discharges slightly during shipment and storage. Because of this, it may require replacement sooner than the normal expected battery life.

Do not use an expired battery. The use of an expired battery can result in improper operation. Replace the battery as soon as possible after it goes dead. Storing a calculator for long periods with a dead battery can cause malfunction.

Avoid use and storage in areas subjected to temperature extremes, and large amounts of humidity and dust.

Do not subject the calculator to excessive impact, pressure, or bending.

Never try to take the calculator apart.

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the calculator.

Whenever discarding the calculator or batteries, be sure to do so in accordance with the laws and regulations in your particular area.

Before using the calculator, slide its hard case downwards to remove it, and then affix the hard case to the back of the calculator as shown in the illustration in the user’s guide.

To Turn Power On:

Press the ON key.

To Turn Power Off:

Press SHIFT and then AC (OFF).

The calculator will also turn off automatically if you do not perform any operation for about 10 minutes.

Follow these steps to adjust the display contrast:

1. Press SHIFT and then MODE (SETUP).

2. Press the down arrow key (▼) to reach the setup screen for contrast.

3. Press 6 (◄CONT►).

4. Use the left arrow key (◄) to make the display lighter and the right arrow key (►) to make it darker.

5. After adjusting the contrast to your liking, press AC.

Important: If adjusting the display contrast does not improve display readability, it probably means that the battery power is low. Replace the battery.

The indicators on the screen of your CASIO FX-82SX PLUS provide information about the current settings and status:

S: Indicates that the SHIFT key has been pressed.

A: Indicates that the ALPHA key has been pressed.

M: Appears when a value is stored in the independent memory.

STO: Appears when the calculator is in standby for a variable name input to store a value.

RCL: Appears when the calculator is in standby for a variable name input to recall a value.

D, R, G: Indicates the current angle unit setting (D: Degrees, R: Radians, G: Gradians).

Fix: Indicates that a fixed number of decimal places is in effect.

Sci: Indicates that a fixed number of significant digits is in effect.

Math: Appears when Math format is selected in the display format setting.

◄ or ►: Indicates that more of the calculation is off the screen to the left or right.

▲ or ▼: Indicates that more of the calculation is off the screen above or below.

You need to select the appropriate mode before starting a calculation. The following table shows the available modes and how to enter them:

The calculator defaults to the COMP Mode. To change modes, press the MODE key and then press the number key corresponding to the desired mode.

To access the calculator’s setup screen, press SHIFT and then MODE (SETUP). The following table describes the available settings.

Deg/Rad/Gra: Specifies degrees, radians, or gradians as the angle unit for value input and calculation result display. (90° = π/2 radians = 100 gradians).

Fix/Sci/Norm: Specifies the number of digits for display of a calculation result.

Fix: The value you specify (from 0 to 9) controls the number of decimal places for displayed calculation results. Calculation results are rounded off to the specified digit before being displayed.

Sci: The value you specify (from 1 to 10) controls the number of significant digits for displayed calculation results. Calculation results are rounded off to the specified digit before being displayed.

Norm: Selecting one of the two available settings (Norm 1, Norm 2) determines the range in which results will be displayed in exponential format. Outside the specified range, results are displayed using non-exponential format. (Norm 1: 10-² > |x|, |x| ≥ 10¹⁰; Norm 2: 10-⁹ > |x|, |x| ≥ 10¹⁰)

MthIO/LineIO: Specifies whether to display a calculation result as a fraction (MthIO) or a decimal value (LineIO).

Your CASIO FX-82SX PLUS can input and display expressions in a textbook format. The memory capacity allows for input of up to 79 steps for a single calculation. A key press normally uses one step, but some functions require more.

Inputting a calculation:

For example, to calculate 2(5+4) – 2 x (-3):

Enter: 2 ( 5 + 4 ) – 2 x (-) 3 =

The result will be 24.

The CASIO FX-82SX PLUS performs calculations according to a specific order of priority:

1st: Function with parentheses: Pol(, Rec(

2nd: Functions that require a parenthesis after the argument: sin(, cos(, tan(, sin⁻¹(, cos⁻¹(, tan⁻¹(, sinh(, cosh(, tanh(, sinh⁻¹(, cosh⁻¹(, tanh⁻¹(, log(, ln(, e^, 10^, √, ³√, Rnd(

3rd: Functions preceded by a value: x², x³, x⁻¹, x!, °’ ”, ^, x√

4th: Fractions

5th: Implied multiplication of π, e (natural log base), memory name, or variable name (e.g., 2π, 5A, πA).

6th: Functions with parentheses: nPr, nCr, RanInt#(

7th: Implied multiplication before a function with parentheses: 2√3, Alog(2), etc.

8th: Permutation (nPr), combination (nCr)

9th: Multiplication (×), division (÷)

10th: Addition (+), subtraction (−)

When the priority of two expressions is the same, the calculation is performed from left to right.

To delete a single character or function: Use the ◀ and ▶ keys to move the cursor to the item you want to delete, then press the DEL key. This is an insert-mode delete.

To replace a character or function: Move the cursor under the item you want to replace. Pressing a key will replace the item at the cursor. This is an overwrite-mode entry.

To clear the entire expression: Press the AC key.

To perform fraction calculations, use the fraction key (a b/c).

Example: To add 2 1/2 and 3 1/3:

Key in: 2 a b/c 1 a b/c 2 + 3 a b/c 1 a b/c 3 =

Result: 5┘5┘6 (which represents 5 5/6)

Example: To convert the result 1.4 to a fraction:

First, input 14 ÷ 10 = to get 1.4.

Then press the fraction key (a b/c).

Result: 1┘2┘5 (which represents 1 2/5)

Calculation results are always reduced to their lowest terms. You can switch between mixed fraction and improper fraction format by pressing SHIFT followed by the fraction format key (d/c). Pressing the fraction key can also toggle between fraction and decimal format.

Use the SHIFT and ( (%) keys for percent calculations.

Example 1: To calculate 150 × 20%:

Key in: 150 x 20 SHIFT ( (%) =

Result: 30.

Example 2: To calculate what percentage of 880 is 660:

Key in: 660 ÷ 880 SHIFT ( (%) =

Result: 75.

Example 3: To increase 2500 by 15%:

Key in: 2500 + 2500 x 15 SHIFT ( (%) =

Result: 2875.

Example 4: To discount 3500 by 25%:

Key in: 3500 – 3500 x 25 SHIFT ( (%) =

Result: 2625.

You can perform calculations using sexagesimal values (degrees, minutes, seconds) and convert between sexagesimal and decimal values.

Example: To convert the decimal value 2.258 to a sexagesimal value:

Key in: 2.258 = SHIFT ° ‘ ”

Result: 2° 15′ 28.8″

Example: To perform the calculation 12° 34′ 56″ × 3.45:

Key in: 12 ° ‘ ” 34 ° ‘ ” 56 ° ‘ ” x 3.45 =

Result: 43.41444444

Press SHIFT ° ‘ ” to convert the result to sexagesimal: 43° 24’ 52″

The ENG key transforms a displayed value to engineering notation, shifting the decimal point to the right. For example:

1234 =

Result: 1234.

Press ENG.

Result: 1.234×10³

Press ENG again.

Result: 1234.×10⁰

The Replay function stores the calculations you perform. After a calculation is complete, you can press the ▲ or ▼ keys to scroll back through previous calculations. When a previous calculation is displayed, you can press ◀ or ▶ to move the cursor and edit the expression to use it for a new calculation.

Calculation history data is all cleared whenever you turn off the calculator, change to a different calculation mode, or initialize the settings.

The last calculation result obtained is stored in the Ans (Answer) memory. The content of Ans memory is updated whenever a new calculation result is displayed.

Example: To divide the result of 3 × 4 by 30:

1. Perform the first part of the calculation: 3 x 4 =. The result, 12, is stored in the Ans memory.

2. Perform the next part of the calculation: Ans ÷ 30 =.

Result: 0.4

Your CASIO FX-82SX PLUS has nine variables (A, B, C, D, E, F, X, and Y) which can be used to store data.

To assign a value to a variable:

Enter the [value], press SHIFT, then RCL (STO), then press the key corresponding to the variable name (e.g., (-) for A, ° ‘ ” for B, etc.).

Example: To assign the result of 193.2 ÷ 23 to variable A:

193.2 ÷ 23 SHIFT RCL (STO) (-) (A)

To recall the contents of a variable:

Press RCL and then the key corresponding to the variable name.

Example: To multiply the contents of variable A by 10:

RCL (-) (A) x 10 =

To clear the contents of a variable:

Enter 0, press SHIFT, then RCL (STO), and then the key for the variable you want to clear.

You can add or subtract calculation results from an independent memory “M”. The “M” indicator appears on the display when there is any value other than zero stored in independent memory.

To add the result of 10 × 5 to M:

Key in: 10 x 5 M+

Result: 50.

To subtract the result of 10 + 5 from M:

Key in: 10 + 5 SHIFT M+ (M-)

Result: 15.

To recall the contents of M:

Press RCL M+ (M)

Result: 35. (50 – 15)

To clear the contents of M:

Key in: 0 SHIFT RCL (STO) M+

To convert rectangular coordinates (√2, √2) to polar coordinates (Angle unit: Deg):

1. Key in: SHIFT + (Pol() √ 2 SHIFT ) (,) √ 2 ) =

2. The result shows r=2.

3. To display the angle θ, press SHIFT ) (y,θ).

4. The result shows θ=45.

To convert polar coordinates (√2, 45°) to rectangular coordinates (Angle unit: Deg):

1. Key in: SHIFT – (Rec() √ 2 SHIFT ) (,) 45 ) =

2. The result shows x=1.

3. To display the value of y, press SHIFT ) (y,θ).

4. The result shows y=1.

To generate random integers within a specific range, use the RanInt# function.

Example: To generate a random integer in the range of 1 to 6:

Key in: SHIFT . (RanInt) 1 SHIFT ) (,) 6 ) =

The result will be a random integer between 1 and 6. The actual result will differ each time.

Example: To determine the number of permutations and combinations possible when selecting four people from a group of 10.

Permutations:

Key in: 10 SHIFT x (nPr) 4 =

Result: 5040.

Combinations:

Key in: 10 SHIFT ÷ (nCr) 4 =

Result: 210.

1. First, enter the STAT mode by pressing MODE 2 (STAT).

2. Before starting data input, always clear the statistical memory by pressing SHIFT MODE (CLR) 1 (Scl) =.

3. Input data using the key sequence: <x-data> DT. The DT key is the M+ key.

4. You can input multiple entries of the same data using SHIFT ; (the ) key). For example, to input the value 110 five times, you would key in 110 SHIFT ; 5 DT.

While inputting data or after inputting is complete, you can use the ▲ and ▼ keys to scroll through the data you have input.

To replace an old value, input the new value and press =. If you press DT instead, the new value will be registered as a new data item, leaving the old one as it is.

To delete a data value displayed on the screen, press SHIFT M+ (CL).

The message “Data Full” appears when there is no memory left for data storage. If this happens, you can press AC to exit data input without registering the last value you entered.

After inputting statistical data in STAT Mode, you will be unable to display or edit individual data items if you change to another mode.

After inputting your data in STAT mode, you can use the S-VAR menu to recall various statistical values. Press SHIFT 2 (S-VAR) to access these values.

Supported statistical variables and the keys to press are shown below:

Sum: Σx², Σx

Number of Items: n

Mean: x̄

Population Standard Deviation: σx

Sample Standard Deviation: sx

Example: To calculate the mean (x̄) and population standard deviation (σx) for the data: 55, 54, 51, 55, 53, 53, 54, 52

Calculation Range: ±1 × 10⁻⁹⁹ to ±9.999999999 × 10⁹⁹ or 0

Number of Digits for Internal Calculation: 15 digits

Precision: In general, ±1 at the 10th digit for a single calculation. Precision for exponential display is ±1 at the least significant digit. Errors are cumulative in the case of consecutive calculations.

The calculator will display an error message whenever an error occurs for any reason during a calculation. When an error message appears:

Press the ◀ or ▶ key to return to the calculation screen. The cursor will be positioned at the location where the error occurred, ready for input. Make the necessary corrections to the calculation and execute it again.

Alternatively, press the AC key to return to the calculation screen. Note that this also clears the calculation that contained the error.

Math ERROR

Cause:

The intermediate or final result of the calculation you are performing exceeds the allowable calculation range.

Your input exceeds the allowable input range.

The calculation you are performing contains an illegal mathematical operation (such as division by zero).

Action:

Check the input values and reduce the number of digits. When using independent memory or a variable as the argument of a function, make sure that the memory or variable value is within the allowable range for the function.

Stack ERROR

Cause:

The calculation you are performing has caused the capacity of the numeric stack or the command stack to be exceeded.

Action:

Simplify the calculation expression. Try splitting the calculation into two or more parts.

Syntax ERROR

Cause:

There is a problem with the format of the calculation you are performing.

Action:

Make necessary corrections.

Arg ERROR

Cause:

Improper use of an argument.

Action:

Make necessary corrections.

Perform the following steps whenever an error occurs during a calculation or when calculation results are not what you expected. Note that you should make separate copies of important data before performing these steps.

1. Check the calculation expression to make sure that it does not contain any errors.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct mode for the type of calculation you are trying to perform.

3. If the above steps do not correct your problem, press the ON key.

4. Initialize all modes and settings. To do this, press SHIFT, MODE (CLR), 3 (All), and then = (Yes).

Important: Removing the battery will cause all of the calculator’s memory contents to be deleted.

1. Press SHIFT and then AC (OFF) to turn off the calculator.

2. On the back of the calculator, remove the screw and then the battery cover.

3. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new one, taking care that its plus (+) and minus (-) ends are facing correctly.

4. Replace the cover and secure it with the screw.

5. Initialize the calculator. Press SHIFT, MODE (CLR), 3 (All), and then = (Yes). Do not skip this step.
