Please adhere to the following safety precautions when using your SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M:

Safety:

• Operate the TV only on 120 V AC.

• The plug is designed for safety purposes to fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer.

• If any liquid or solid object should fall inside the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel before operating it further.

• If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

Installing:

• To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

• Do not install the TV in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

• The AC power cord is attached to the rear of the TV with hooks. Do not attempt to remove the cord from these hooks. Doing so could cause damage to the TV.

When using TV games, computers, and similar products with your SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M, keep the brightness and contrast functions at low settings. If a fixed (non-moving) pattern is left on the screen for long periods of time at a high brightness or contrast setting, the image can be permanently imprinted onto the screen. Continuously watching the same program can also cause the imprint of station logos. These types of imprints are not covered by your warranty as they result from misuse.

Clean the SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M with a soft dry cloth. Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine, which might damage the finish of the cabinet.

The buttons on your remote control are presented in different colors to represent the available functions:

Button Color:

• Transparent: Press to select the component you want to control; e.g. VTR (VCR)/MDP/DVD Player, DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite)/CABLE, or TV.

• Green: Buttons relevant to power operations, like turning the TV, DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite)/CABLE, or VTR (VCR)/MDP/DVD Player on or off.

Label Color:

• White: TV/VTR (VCR)/MDP/DVD Player/DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite)/CABLE operation buttons.

• Yellow: PIP, P&P, and CHANNEL INDEX operation buttons.

• Blue: DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) operation buttons.

• Green: S-Link operation buttons.

• Pink: DVD Player operation buttons.

The connection you choose will depend on the cable found in your home. For the best picture quality, an outdoor antenna or cable TV system is recommended.

• For 75-ohm coaxial cable (Newer homes): Connect the coaxial cable for VHF, UHF, or Cable directly to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

• For 300-ohm twin lead cable (Older homes): Connect the twin lead cable for VHF, UHF, or VHF/UHF to the antenna connector terminals on the rear of the TV.

• For homes with both VHF (coaxial) and UHF (twin lead): Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable to the VHF input on an optional U/V mixer (EAC-66). Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable to the UHF input on the U/V mixer. Then connect the mixer’s output to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

There are a few ways to connect a cable box, depending on your setup:

Simple Cable Box Connection (for all scrambled channels):

1. Connect the incoming CATV cable to the IN port on your cable box.

2. Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable from the OUT port on your cable box to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of your TV.

Cable Box and Antenna/Cable Connection (for scrambled and unscrambled channels):

1. Connect the incoming CATV cable to the IN port on your cable box.

2. Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable from the cable box OUT port to the AUX (TO CONVERTER) input on the rear of your TV.

3. Connect a separate antenna cable or the unscrambled CATV feed to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of your TV.

With this setup, you can switch between scrambled channels (through your cable box on AUX) and normal channels by pressing the ANT button on your remote.

Note: For connections where the cable box controls all channels, consider using the CHANNEL FIX feature in the SET UP menu.

For a standard VCR:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect AUDIO (White-Left, Red-Right) and VIDEO (Yellow) OUT on your VCR to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN jacks on your TV (e.g., VIDEO 1).

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect OUT on your VCR to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

For an S-Video equipped VCR:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO cables, connect AUDIO OUT (White-Left, Red-Right) on your VCR to the AUDIO IN jacks on your TV.

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect OUT on your VCR to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

4. Using an S-VIDEO connector, connect S-VIDEO OUT on your VCR to the S-VIDEO IN on your TV.

Note: If connecting a monaural VCR, connect only the single audio output to the left (MONO) input on your TV.

1. Connect a cable splitter to your incoming cable line.

2. Connect one output from the splitter to the IN on your cable box.

3. Connect the other output from the splitter to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

4. Connect a coaxial cable from the OUT on your cable box to the IN on your VCR.

5. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect AUDIO (White-Left, Red-Right) and VIDEO (Yellow) OUT from your VCR to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your TV (e.g., VIDEO 1).

6. If you have an S-Video equipped VCR, you can use an S-VIDEO cable instead of the yellow VIDEO cable for a better picture (Step 5).

Note: To view scrambled channels through this setup, select the video input on your TV that the VCR is connected to by pressing TV/VIDEO.

Connecting a DBS Receiver only:

1. Connect the cable from your satellite antenna to the SATELLITE IN on your DBS receiver.

2. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

3. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect AUDIO (White-Left, Red-Right) and VIDEO (Yellow) OUT on your DBS receiver to AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your TV.

Connecting a DBS Receiver and a VCR:

1. Connect the cable from your satellite antenna to the SATELLITE IN on your DBS receiver.

2. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the VHF/UHF-IN on your VCR.

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect VHF/UHF-OUT on your VCR to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

4. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT from your DBS receiver to AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your VCR.

5. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT from your VCR to AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your TV.

Note: To view input from the DBS or VCR, select the appropriate video input on the TV by pressing TV/VIDEO.

Connecting an Audio System (Stereo):

1. Using AUDIO cables, connect the AUDIO OUT (White-Left, Red-Right) on your TV to an unused Line Input (e.g., AUX) on your stereo system.

2. Set your stereo to the chosen Line Input. In the TV’s AUDIO menu, set SPEAKER to OFF and select your preferred AUDIO OUT setting (VARIABLE or FIXED). See the AUDIO menu section for details.

Connecting an AV Receiver:

1. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the VIDEO 1 IN on your TV to the Monitor AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your AV receiver.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the TV OUT (MONITOR AUDIO/VIDEO) on your TV to the TV AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your AV receiver.

The MONITOR OUT on your SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M allows you to use a second VCR to record a program being played by the primary VCR or to perform tape editing.

1. Connect the VCR intended for playback as you normally would (e.g., to VIDEO 1 IN).

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the MONITOR AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your TV to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your second VCR (the one intended for recording).

Notes:

• Do not change the TV’s input signal while editing through MONITOR OUT.

• When connecting only a single VCR, if its LINE OUT is connected to the TV’s VIDEO IN, do not connect the TV’s MONITOR OUT back to the VCR’s LINE IN. This will cause interference.

For best results, connect your DVD Player directly to the TV, not through other equipment.

Standard AUDIO/VIDEO Connection:

• Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the LINE OUT (Audio L/R and Video) on your DVD player to an available VIDEO IN (e.g., VIDEO 1) on your TV.

Component Video Connection (for best picture quality):

1. Using AUDIO cables, connect the AUDIO R and L of the LINE OUT on your DVD Player to the AUDIO R and L IN jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

2. Using three video cables, connect the Y, B-Y (Cb), and R-Y (Cr) jacks on the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT of your DVD Player to the corresponding Y, B-Y, and R-Y jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

Note: Since DVD picture quality is high, some picture noise may appear. If this happens, adjust the SHARPNESS in the TV’s VIDEO menu.

To view a picture directly from your camcorder, use the front panel inputs on your SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M.

Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your camcorder to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN on the front panel of your TV (Yellow-VIDEO, White-AUDIO Left, Red-AUDIO Right).

Notes:

• If you are connecting a monaural camcorder, connect only the single audio output to the left (MONO) input on your TV.

• If you have an S-Video equipped camcorder, you can use the S-Video input on the front panel for a better picture.

S-Link is a Sony feature that allows your Sony components to work together. It can automatically switch the TV input to video when you press PLAY on your Sony S-Link VCR. It also allows you to turn the VCR and TV off at the same time with the SYSTEM OFF button.

To connect:

1. Connect your VCR to the TV using the standard or S-Video connection methods.

2. Using an S-LINK connector cable, connect the S-LINK jacks on your VCR and TV. Ensure the TV S-LINK connector is in the same row as the AUDIO/VIDEO connectors you are using for that VCR.

CONTROL S allows you to control your TV and other Sony equipment with one remote control.

• To control other Sony equipment with your TV’s remote: Connect a CONTROL S cable from the CONTROL S OUT jack on the TV to the CONTROL S IN jack of the other equipment.

• To control your TV with another Sony device’s remote: Connect a CONTROL S cable from the CONTROL S OUT jack of the other equipment to the CONTROL S IN jack on the TV.

The EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear every time you turn on the SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M until you perform the AUTO PROGRAM. This feature allows you to set the on-screen language and all receivable channels.

1. Press POWER to turn on the TV. The EASY SETUP GUIDE screen appears.

2. Press CHANNEL + to select English.

3. The screen will change to reflect your choice. Ensure your antenna/cable is connected.

4. Press VOLUME – to continue. “AUTO PROGRAM” will appear, and the TV will scan for and preset all available channels.

To perform AUTO SET UP again:

• Press the SET UP button on top of the TV.

• Select your language.

• Press VOLUME – to restore factory settings. A confirmation message will appear. Press CHANNEL+ to execute.

• Press SET UP to exit.

Note: Performing AUTO PROGRAM will erase your CHANNEL FIX, TIMER, and CHANNEL BLOCK settings.

Some programs are broadcast with Caption Vision. To display captions:

1. Press the MENU button, go to the VIDEO menu, and select CAPTION VISION.

2. Select the desired mode (e.g., CC1 for most programs, or TEXT1, etc.).

3. Press DISPLAY repeatedly until the caption mode you selected is displayed on screen.

Modes:

• CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4: Shows a printed version of the dialogue or sound effects.

• TEXT1, TEXT2, TEXT3, TEXT4: Shows text information, usually unrelated to the program, on half the screen.

Notes:

• Poor reception can cause errors in captions.

• XDS, Caption Vision, and the status display cannot be used at the same time.

Your SONY TRINITRON KV-37XBR48M has a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) and Picture-and-Picture (P&P) feature. Use the yellow labeled buttons, located under the cover on the top of the remote, to control these functions.

• Activate PIP: Press the button with a small square in the corner. Each press cycles the window size (1/4 -> 1/9 -> 1/16). Press OFF to remove the window.

• Activate P&P: Press the button with two squares side-by-side. Press OFF to cancel.

• Change Window/Left Picture Source: Press TV/VIDEO repeatedly to cycle through TV, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, VIDEO 3 and VIDEO 4 for the sub-picture.

• Alternate Sound: Press AUDIO to switch the sound between the main and sub pictures.

• Change Window/Left Picture Channel: Use the small CH +/- buttons to change the channel in the sub-picture.

• Move PIP Window: Press POSITION to move the window picture counterclockwise around the main picture (PIP only).

• Freeze Picture: Press FREEZE to freeze the main picture (PIP) or both pictures (P&P). Press again to resume.

• Swap Pictures: Press SWAP to exchange the main and window pictures (PIP) or the left and right pictures (P&P), including audio.

Note: The channel received through the AUX jack cannot be displayed as a window picture. If a picture is snowy, the screen may become unstable.

The CHANNEL INDEX feature displays multiple channels for direct selection.

1. Press the CHANNEL INDEX button (grid icon) once. The current channel will appear in the center, surrounded by the first twelve receivable channels.

2. A yellow frame will indicate the current selection. Use the joystick on the remote to move the yellow frame to the channel you wish to view.

3. Press the center of the joystick to select the channel. The TV will switch to that channel for normal viewing.

Additional Controls:

• Press the CHANNEL INDEX button again to see the next twelve channels.

• Use TV/VIDEO to cycle the center picture through video inputs.

• Use ANT to replace the center picture with a channel from the alternate input (VHF/UHF or AUX).

• Use 0-9 or CH +/- to change the channel in the center picture directly.

You can use the remote control joystick to access and alter settings in the menus.

1. Press the MENU button to display the main menu.

2. Press up or down on the joystick to highlight the desired menu (e.g., VIDEO, AUDIO, SET UP).

3. Press the center of the joystick (+) to enter that menu.

4. Press up or down on the joystick to move the cursor to the option you want to change.

5. Press the center of the joystick to select the option. For slider adjustments, use up/down or left/right on the joystick to change the setting.

6. When finished, select MENU to go back to the previous menu, or press the MENU button on the remote to exit the menus completely at any time.

Access the VIDEO menu by pressing MENU and selecting VIDEO. To restore factory settings for the selected MODE, press RESET on the remote while the VIDEO menu is selected.

Access the AUDIO menu by pressing MENU and selecting AUDIO. To restore factory settings, press RESET on the remote while the AUDIO menu is selected.

Access the TIMER menu by pressing MENU and selecting TIMER. Any loss of power will erase these settings.

Access the SET UP menu by pressing MENU and selecting SET UP.

• CABLE: Select ON if your TV is connected to a cable system. AUTO SET UP will set this automatically.

• CHANNEL FIX: Fixes the TV’s input to a specific channel or video input, useful for cable boxes or AV receivers.

• AUTO PROGRAM: Signals the TV to automatically program all receivable channels.

• CHANNEL ERASE/ADD: Allows you to manually remove (ERASE) or add (ADD) channels to the TV’s memory. Select the channel with 0-9 buttons or CH+/-, then select the action.

• CHANNEL CAPTION: Lets you create a custom label (up to four characters) for any channel. Select the channel, then use the joystick to enter letters/numbers.

• VIDEO LABEL: Lets you label each video input (VIDEO 1, 2, 3, 4) with the name of the connected equipment (e.g., VHS, DVD, GAME). Selecting SKIP for an input will cause the TV to ignore it when you press the TV/VIDEO button.

• LANGUAGE: Select the on-screen menu language.

• TILT CORRECTION: Use this to correct any tilt in the picture. Press up or down on the joystick to adjust between +5 and –5.

This feature lets you create a multi-picture display of your eight favorite channels for quick selection.

Setting FAVORITE CHANNEL manually:

1. From the SET UP menu, select FAVORITE CHANNEL.

2. Select MODE and change the setting from AUTO to MANUAL, then press the joystick.

3. The cursor will move to position 1. Press the joystick.

4. Use the joystick to select a channel for that position, then press the joystick to set it.

5. Repeat for the other positions (2 through 8).

6. Press MENU when you are done.

Resetting a favorite channel choice:

• In the FAVORITE CHANNEL menu, select the position you want to change and press RESET on the remote. This will clear the channel for that position. You can then select a new one.

Using FAVORITE CHANNEL:

1. Press the FAVORITE CHANNEL button (grid icon with a heart) once.

2. The current channel appears in the center, surrounded by your eight favorites.

3. Use the joystick to move the yellow frame to the channel you want to watch. The picture in the yellow frame will be live with sound, while the others are still images.

4. Press the center of the joystick to select it for normal viewing.

You can create a custom menu with up to seven of your most-used functions (excluding SET UP menu items).

Creating or Changing the Menu:

1. In the SET UP menu, select CUSTOMIZED MENU.

2. Select CUSTOMIZE and press the joystick. Set it to ON and press the joystick again.

3. Press down on the joystick to highlight position 1 and press the joystick.

4. A list of available menu items will appear. Locate the item you wish to include, select it, and press the joystick. Grayed out items cannot be included.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining positions (2-7).

6. Press MENU when you are done. The CUSTOMIZED MENU will now appear first when you press MENU.

To cancel the function: Go back to the CUSTOMIZED MENU setting and set CUSTOMIZE to OFF.

To reset choices: When the cursor points to CUSTOMIZE or any position (1-7), press RESET on the remote.

You can program the supplied remote control to operate Sony or non-Sony video equipment like VCRs, DVD players, cable boxes, or DBS receivers.

General Procedure:

1. Set the VTR 1/2/3/DVD/MDP switch (for VCR/DVD) or press the DBS/CABLE (FUNCTION) button (for cable/DBS) to the position you want to program.

2. Press the CODE SET button.

3. Use the 0-9 number buttons to enter the manufacturer’s code number from the charts in the operating instructions.

4. Press ENTER.

Notes:

• If more than one code is listed, try them one by one until you find the correct one.

• If the remote doesn’t work, you may need to use the equipment’s original remote.

• When you remove the batteries, the code numbers may revert to the factory setting and need to be reset.

Example VCR Manufacturer Codes:

• Sony: 301, 302, 303

• Panasonic: 308, 309, 306, 307

• JVC: 314, 336, 337

• RCA/PROSCAN: 304, 305, 308, 309, 311, 329, 312, 313, 310

Example Cable Box Manufacturer Codes:

• Jerrold/G.I.: 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 208, 218

• Scientific Atlanta: 209, 210, 211

Example DBS Receiver Manufacturer Codes:

• Sony: 801 (preset)

• RCA/PROSCAN: 802

• Make sure the power cord is plugged in.

• Operate with the buttons on the TV and the remote control.

• Check to see if the TV/VIDEO setting is correct: when watching TV, set to TV, and when watching video tapes, set to VIDEO 1, 2, 3 or 4.

• Try another channel. It could be station trouble.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again using the SET UP button to return to the factory preset condition.

• Batteries could be weak. Replace the batteries.

• Check the polarity of the batteries.

• Press TV (FUNCTION) when operating your TV.

• Make sure the TV’s power cord is connected securely to the wall outlet.

• Locate the TV at least 3-4 feet away from fluorescent lights.

• Check the S-Link connection if you are trying to use S-Link features.

• Adjust PICTURE in the VIDEO menu.

• Adjust BRIGHTNESS in the VIDEO menu.

• Check antenna/cable connections.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

• If VIDEO LABEL is set to WEB, the screen will darken. Change this setting if you are not viewing WEB TV.

• Press MUTING so that “MUTING” disappears from the screen.

• Check the MTS setting in the AUDIO menu.

• Make sure SPEAKER is set to ON in the AUDIO menu.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

• No color: Adjust the COLOR in the VIDEO menu. Black and white programs cannot be seen in color.

• Only snow and noise appear: Check the CABLE setting in the SET UP menu. Check antenna/cable connections. Make sure the channel is broadcasting.

• Dotted lines or stripes: Adjust the antenna. Move the TV away from noise sources like cars or neon signs.

• TV is fixed to one channel: Try turning CHANNEL FIX off in the SET UP menu.

• Double images or ghosts: Use a highly directional outdoor antenna or a cable.

• Cannot operate a menu item (it appears gray): You may be in the wrong mode. Press TV/VIDEO to switch to the correct input.

• CUSTOMIZED MENU does not appear: Verify CUSTOMIZE is set to ON. If no items are selected in it, the setting will automatically turn OFF.

• A video source is skipped when pressing TV/VIDEO: Ensure its VIDEO LABEL is not set to SKIP.

First, turn the TV on. Then, while pressing and holding the RESET button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV itself. The TV will turn itself off, then back on. When the TV turns on again, all settings will be reset, and the EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear.
