Safety

Operate the SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48 only on 120 V AC.

The plug is designed for safety purposes to fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer.

If any liquid or solid object should fall inside the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel before operating it further.

If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

Installing

To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

Do not install the SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48 in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

The AC power cord is attached to the rear of the TV with hooks. Do not attempt to remove the cord from these hooks as it could cause damage to the TV.

Screen Imprints (Burn-in)

When using TV games, computers, and similar products with your TV, keep the brightness and contrast functions at low settings. If a fixed (non-moving) pattern is left on the screen for long periods of time at a high brightness or contrast setting, the image can be permanently imprinted onto the screen. Continuously watching the same program can cause the imprint of station logos onto the TV screen. These types of imprints are not covered by your warranty because they are the result of misuse.

Cleaning the TV

Clean the SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48 with a soft dry cloth. Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine, which might damage the finish of the cabinet.

The connection you choose will depend on the cable found in your home. Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

A) For 75-ohm coaxial cable (VHF/UHF or Cable):

Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable directly to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48.

B) For 300-ohm twin lead cable (VHF/UHF):

Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

C) For separate VHF and UHF antennas (using a U/V mixer):

1. Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable from your VHF source to the VHF input of an EAC-66 U/V mixer (not supplied).

2. Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable from your UHF source to the UHF input of the mixer.

3. Connect the output of the mixer to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48.

Some pay cable TV systems use scrambled or encoded signals that require a cable box. Here are a couple of ways to connect it:

Connection for only scrambled channels:

1. Connect the incoming cable TV line to the IN port on your cable box.

2. Using a 75-ohm coaxial cable, connect the OUT port on your cable box to the AUX (TO CONVERTER) input on the rear of your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48.

Connection for both scrambled and unscrambled channels:

1. Connect the incoming CATV cable (unscrambled channels) directly to the VHF/UHF input on your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48.

2. Connect the cable box for scrambled channels to the AUX (TO CONVERTER) input on the TV. You can then switch between the two inputs by pressing the ANT button on your remote.

Note: For these setups, you may want to use the CHANNEL FIX feature (see “CHANNEL SET UP” in the menu) to simplify channel selection. You may also be able to program your Sony remote to operate the cable box.

Disconnect all power sources before making any connections. You can connect a standard VCR or an S-Video equipped VCR.

Connecting a standard VCR:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors (like the VMC-810S/820S, not supplied), connect the AUDIO (Left-White, Right-Red) and VIDEO (Yellow) OUT jacks on your VCR to the AUDIO L/R and VIDEO IN jacks on your TV (e.g., VIDEO IN 1).

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect the OUT jack on your VCR to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

Connecting an S-Video equipped VCR for enhanced picture quality:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO connectors (like the RK-74A, not supplied), connect the AUDIO OUT (Left-White, Right-Red) jacks on your VCR to the AUDIO L/R IN jacks on your TV.

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect the OUT jack on your VCR to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

4. Using an S-VIDEO connector (like the YC-15V/30V, not supplied), connect the S-VIDEO OUT jack on your VCR to the S-VIDEO IN jack on your TV.

Note: If you are connecting a monaural VCR, connect only the single audio output to the left (MONO) input on your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48.

This setup allows you to watch and record from your cable box. Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

1. Use a splitter (not supplied) to split your incoming cable signal. Connect one output from the splitter to the VHF/UHF input on your TV. Connect the other output to the IN jack on your cable box.

2. Using a coaxial cable, connect the OUT jack on your cable box to the IN jack on your VCR.

3. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT jacks on your VCR to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN jacks on your TV (e.g., VIDEO IN 1).

4. For an S-Video equipped VCR, additionally connect the S-VIDEO OUT from the VCR to the S-VIDEO IN on the TV, and use separate AUDIO connectors for sound.

To view scrambled channels from the cable box, select the video input on the TV that your VCR is connected to by pressing TV/VIDEO.

Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

Connecting a DBS receiver only:

1. Connect the cable from your satellite antenna to the SATELLITE IN on your DBS receiver.

2. Attach a coaxial connector from your regular cable or antenna to the VHF/UHF input on your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR48.

3. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your DBS receiver to an AUDIO/VIDEO IN on your TV.

Connecting a DBS receiver and a VCR:

1. Connect the cable from your satellite antenna to the SATELLITE IN on your DBS receiver.

2. Attach a coaxial connector from your regular cable or antenna to the VHF/UHF-IN on your VCR.

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect the VHF/UHF-OUT on your VCR to the VHF/UHF input on your TV.

4. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your DBS receiver to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your VCR.

5. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your VCR to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your TV.

To view input from the DBS or VCR, select the appropriate video input by pressing TV/VIDEO on the remote control.

For more dynamic sound or greater control of your equipment, you can connect an external audio system or an AV receiver. Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

Connecting an audio system (stereo):

1. Using AUDIO connectors, connect the AUDIO OUT (L/R) jacks on your TV to an unused Line input (e.g., Tape-2, AUX1) on your stereo system.

2. Set your stereo to the chosen Line input.

3. In the TV’s AUDIO menu, set SPEAKER to OFF and adjust the AUDIO OUT setting (VARIABLE or FIXED) as desired.

Connecting an AV receiver:

1. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the VIDEO 1 IN on your TV to the Monitor AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your AV receiver.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the TV OUT (MONITOR OUT) on your TV to the TV AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your AV receiver.

Note: You may want to use the CHANNEL FIX feature to fix the TV’s input to VIDEO 1 when using an AV receiver.

For the best picture, connect your DVD player directly to the TV. Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

Standard Connection (using AUDIO/VIDEO):

Using standard AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the LINE OUT (Audio L/R, Video) on your DVD Player to a VIDEO IN (e.g., VIDEO 1) on your TV.

Component Video Connection (for highest quality):

1. Using AUDIO connectors, connect the AUDIO R and L LINE OUT on your DVD Player to the AUDIO R and L jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

2. Using three video connectors (often colored Green, Blue, Red), connect the Y, B-Y, and R-Y COMPONENT VIDEO OUT on your DVD Player to the Y, B-Y, and R-Y jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

Note: Some DVD Player terminals may be labeled Y, Cb, and Cr. If so, connect Y (green) to Y, B-Y (blue) to Cb, and R-Y (red) to Cr. Since DVD picture quality is high, you may need to adjust the SHARPNESS in the VIDEO menu to reduce picture noise.

These features are exclusive to Sony products and allow for greater control and automation between components.

Using the S-Link function:

S-Link allows you to automatically switch the TV input to video when you press PLAY on your Sony S-Link VCR, and turn both the VCR and TV off together using the SYSTEM OFF button.

1. Connect your VCR to the TV using standard AUDIO/VIDEO or S-Video connections.

2. Using an S-LINK connector, connect the S-LINK jacks on your VCR and TV. Ensure the TV S-LINK connector is in the same row as the AUDIO/VIDEO connectors you are using.

Using the CONTROL S feature:

CONTROL S allows you to control your TV and other Sony equipment with a single remote control.

• To control other Sony equipment with your TV’s remote: Connect the CONTROL S OUT jack on the TV to the CONTROL S IN jack of the other equipment using a CONTROL S cable.

• To control your TV with another Sony equipment’s remote: Connect the CONTROL S IN jack on the TV to the CONTROL S OUT jack of the other equipment.

The EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear every time you turn on the TV until you perform AUTO PROGRAM. This feature sets the language and all receivable channels. Perform this function during the day with the antenna/cable properly connected.

1. Press POWER to turn on the TV. The EASY SETUP GUIDE screen appears.

2. Press CHANNEL + to select English, or use the other buttons as indicated on screen for other languages.

3. Press VOLUME – to continue.

4. “AUTO PROGRAM” appears, and the TV will scan and preset all receivable channels automatically. When finished, the lowest numbered channel is displayed.

To perform AUTO SET UP again:

1. Press the SET UP button on top of the TV.

2. Select a language.

3. Press VOLUME – to restore factory settings. “CONTINUE TO AUTO PROGRAM?” will appear. Press CHANNEL+ to execute or CHANNEL– to exit.

4. Press SET UP to exit.

Note: Before performing AUTO SET UP again, ensure the input is not set to AUX. Performing AUTO PROGRAM will erase your CHANNEL FIX, TIMER, and CHANNEL BLOCK settings.

Some programs are broadcast with Caption Vision. To display captions:

1. Press the MENU button.

2. Navigate to the CAPTION VISION menu.

3. Select one of the caption or text modes:

• CC1, CC2, CC3, or CC4: Shows a printed version of the dialogue or sound effects. CC1 is used for most programs.

• TEXT1, TEXT2, TEXT3, or TEXT4: Shows text information, usually unrelated to the program, on half of the screen.

4. After selecting a mode, press DISPLAY repeatedly until the caption appears on the screen.

Notes:

• Poor reception can cause errors in captions.

• XDS, Caption Vision, and the status display cannot be used at the same time.

These features allow you to watch two programs at once. The control buttons are located under the cover on the top of the remote control.

PIP (Picture-in-Picture): Shows one small “window” picture inside the full-size “main” picture.

P&P (Picture-and-Picture): Shows two reduced-size pictures side-by-side.

Note: The channel from the AUX jack cannot be a window picture. If a picture is snowy, the screen may become unstable.

CHANNEL INDEX displays multiple channels for direct selection. The channels shown are from the TV’s list of receivable channels.

1. Press the INDEX button (icon with 12 squares) once. The current channel appears in the center, surrounded by the first twelve receivable channels.

2. A yellow frame indicates the current selection. Wait for all surrounding pictures to appear.

3. Use the joystick on the remote to move the yellow frame to the picture you wish to view, then press the center of the joystick (+) to select it.

CHANNEL INDEX Remote Control Buttons:

You can use the on-screen menus to alter various settings. The remote control joystick is the primary tool for navigation.

1. Press the MENU button to access the main menu.

2. Press up or down on the joystick to move the cursor and highlight the desired menu (e.g., VIDEO, AUDIO, SET UP).

3. Press the center of the joystick (+) to enter the selected menu.

4. Inside a menu, press up or down on the joystick to highlight the setting you want to change.

5. Press the center of the joystick (+) to select the setting. Options for that setting will be displayed.

6. Press up, down, left, or right on the joystick to make your selection or adjust a slider.

7. Press the center of the joystick (+) to activate your choice.

8. To return to the previous menu, highlight and select MENU. To exit the menus completely at any time, press the MENU button on the remote control.

To access the VIDEO menu, press MENU, highlight VIDEO, and press the center of the joystick. You can press RESET on the remote while the VIDEO menu is selected to restore factory settings. The following settings are available:

Access these settings in the TIMER menu. Set DAYLIGHT SAVING before setting the clock. Any loss of power will erase these settings.

The SET UP menu contains basic options for your TV configuration. To access it, press MENU, highlight SET UP, and press the center of the joystick. If menu items are grayed out, press the ANT button on the remote until a channel number appears.

This feature provides a multi-picture display of your eight favorite channels for direct selection. The factory setting is AUTO, which automatically populates the list with the last eight channels you selected. To set it manually:

Setting FAVORITE CHANNEL manually:

1. In the SET UP menu, select FAVORITE CHANNEL.

2. Select MODE and press the joystick. Use the joystick to display MANUAL and press the joystick again to select it.

3. Press down on the joystick to highlight position 1 and press the joystick. Now you can use the joystick to select a channel for that position. Press the joystick to confirm.

4. Repeat step 3 for the other positions (2-8).

5. Press MENU when you are done.

Resetting a Favorite Channel Choice:

Follow the steps above to enter the manual setting screen. Select the position you want to change and press RESET on the remote to clear it. You can then program a new channel.

Using FAVORITE CHANNEL:

1. Press the FAVORITE CHANNEL button (icon with 8 squares) once.

2. The current channel appears in the center, surrounded by your eight favorite channels.

3. Use the joystick to move the yellow frame to the channel you want to watch and press the center of the joystick to select it.

You can program the supplied remote control to operate other Sony and non-Sony equipment that has an infrared sensor.

General Programming Steps:

1. Set the component switch on the remote (e.g., VTR 1/2/3/DVD/MDP or DBS/CABLE) to the position for the equipment you want to control.

2. Press the CODE SET button.

3. Press the function button for the component type (e.g., VTR/DVD or DBS/CABLE).

4. Use the 0-9 number buttons to enter the manufacturer’s code for your device from the charts in the operating instructions.

5. Press ENTER.

Tips:

• The remote is preset for Sony equipment (VTR1=303, VTR2=302, VTR3=301, DVD/MDP=751, DBS=801).

• If more than one code is listed for your brand, try them one by one until you find the correct one.

• If the remote still doesn’t work, you may need to use the equipment’s original remote control.

• If you remove the batteries for too long, the codes may need to be reset.

To operate the TV again, press the TV (FUNCTION) button.

If the screen is not lit and there is no sound, try the following steps:

• Make sure the power cord is plugged in.

• Operate with the buttons on the TV itself as well as the remote control.

• Check to see if the TV/VIDEO setting is correct. When watching TV, set it to TV. When watching video tapes, set it to VIDEO 1, 2, 3 or 4.

• Try another channel, as it could be a station issue.

• Perform an AUTO SET UP again to return to factory preset conditions.

If the screen is lit but the picture quality is poor, try these solutions:

• Adjust the PICTURE setting in the VIDEO menu.

• Adjust the BRIGHTNESS setting in the VIDEO menu.

• Check all antenna and cable connections.

• Perform an AUTO SET UP again using the SET UP button to return to the factory preset condition.

• If VIDEO LABEL is set to WEB, the screen will darken. Change this setting if you are not viewing WEB TV.

If you have a clear picture but cannot hear any audio, check the following:

• Press the MUTING button to ensure the TV is not muted. “MUTING” should disappear from the screen.

• Check the MTS setting in the AUDIO menu to ensure it is set correctly for the broadcast (e.g., STEREO or MONO).

• Make sure the SPEAKER setting in the AUDIO menu is set to ON.

• As a last resort, perform an AUTO SET UP again to return to the factory preset condition.

For no color:

• Adjust the COLOR setting in the VIDEO menu.

• Note that programs broadcast in black and white cannot be seen in color.

• Perform an AUTO SET UP again.

For only snow and noise on the screen:

• Check the CABLE setting in the SET UP menu (ON for cable TV, OFF for antenna).

• Check the antenna/cable connections are secure.

• Make sure the channel you have selected is currently broadcasting a program.

• Press the ANT button to change the input mode if you are using the AUX input.

If you are unable to change channels, it is likely due to the CHANNEL FIX setting.

• Try turning CHANNEL FIX to OFF in the SET UP menu.

• If channels are missing, use AUTO PROGRAM to add receivable channels that are not presently in the TV’s memory.

To reset all TV settings to their original factory defaults, follow this procedure:

1. First, turn the TV on.

2. While pressing and holding the RESET button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV set itself.

3. The TV will turn itself off, then back on.

4. When the TV turns on again, all settings will be reset, and the EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear on the screen.
