Please observe the following cautions when using your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88:

Screen Burn-in: When using TV games, computers, and similar products, keep the brightness and contrast functions at low settings. If a fixed (non-moving) pattern is left on the screen for long periods at a high brightness or contrast setting, the image can be permanently imprinted onto the screen. This also applies to station logos. These types of imprints are not covered by your warranty.

Cleaning: Clean the TV with a soft dry cloth. Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine, as they might damage the cabinet’s finish.

Ventilation: To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

Placement: Do not install the TV in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

Power Cord: The AC power cord is attached to the rear of the TV with hooks. Do not attempt to remove the cord from these hooks, as doing so could cause damage to the TV.

Power Source: Operate the TV only on 120V AC (or 220V AC for model KV-34XBR48C).

Liquid/Solid Objects: If any liquid or solid object falls into the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel.

Extended Non-Use: If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

To connect an antenna or cable directly to your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88, follow the appropriate steps based on your cable type. Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

A) For 75-ohm Coaxial Cable (VHF, UHF, or Cable):

Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable directly to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

B) For 300-ohm Twin Lead Cable (VHF, UHF):

Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable to the antenna connector terminals on the rear of the TV.

C) For Separate VHF (coaxial) and UHF (twin lead) Antennas:

You will need an optional U/V mixer (like the EAC-66). Connect the 75-ohm coaxial VHF cable to the VHF input of the mixer. Connect the 300-ohm twin lead UHF cable to the UHF terminals of the mixer. Then, connect the single coaxial output cable from the mixer to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

To connect a cable box that provides scrambled channels, follow these steps:

1. Connect your incoming CATV cable (unscrambled channels) to the VHF/UHF input on the TV.

2. Using a separate 75-ohm coaxial cable, connect the ‘TO CONVERTER’ or ‘OUT’ port on your cable box to the AUX input on the TV.

3. Connect your incoming CATV signal cable to the ‘IN’ port on the cable box.

With this setup, you can switch between normal (CATV) channels and scrambled channels (from the cable box via the AUX input) by pressing the ANT button on your remote control.

For installations where the cable box is used for all channels, you can connect the output of the cable box to the VHF/UHF input on the TV. In this case, you should consider using the CHANNEL FIX feature in the SET UP menu.

Before making any connections, ensure all devices are powered off. Choose the connection method that matches your VCR type.

Standard VCR (using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors):

1. Attach the coaxial cable from your antenna or wall outlet to the IN jack on your VCR.

2. Using an AUDIO/VIDEO cable, connect the AUDIO OUT (Red and White) and VIDEO OUT (Yellow) jacks on your VCR to the corresponding AUDIO IN and VIDEO IN jacks on your TV (e.g., VIDEO 1).

3. Using a coaxial cable, connect the OUT jack on your VCR to the VHF/UHF jack on your TV.

S-Video Equipped VCR:

1. Attach the coaxial cable from your antenna or wall outlet to the IN jack on your VCR.

2. Using an AUDIO cable, connect the AUDIO OUT (Red and White) jacks on your VCR to the AUDIO IN jacks on your TV.

3. Using a coaxial cable, connect the OUT jack on your VCR to the VHF/UHF jack on your TV.

4. Using an S-VIDEO cable, connect the S-VIDEO OUT jack on your VCR to the S-VIDEO IN jack on your TV.

For the best picture quality, connect your DVD Player directly to the TV. Disconnect all power before starting.

Standard Connection (AUDIO/VIDEO):

1. Using a standard AUDIO/VIDEO cable, connect the LINE OUT jacks (Yellow for VIDEO, Red and White for AUDIO) on your DVD Player to the VIDEO IN 1 jacks on the rear of your TV.

Component Video Connection (for higher quality):

1. Using an AUDIO cable, connect the AUDIO L and R LINE OUT jacks on your DVD Player to the AUDIO L and R jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

2. Using three video cables (component video cable), connect the Y (Green), B-Y/Cb (Blue), and R-Y/Cr (Red) COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks on your DVD Player to the corresponding Y, B-Y, and R-Y jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

Note: Since DVD pictures are high quality, you may see some picture noise. If this occurs, adjust the SHARPNESS in the VIDEO menu.

Disconnect all power sources before making connections.

Connecting an Audio System (Stereo):

1. Using an AUDIO cable, connect the AUDIO OUT jacks (White-Left, Red-Right) on your TV to an unused set of Line inputs (e.g., Tape-2, AUX) on your stereo system.

2. Set your stereo to the chosen Line input.

3. Use the AUDIO menu on your TV to set your audio output. For details, see the SPEAKER and AUDIO OUT settings on page 24 of the PDF.

Connecting an AV Receiver:

1. Using an AUDIO/VIDEO cable, connect the VIDEO 1 IN on your TV to the Monitor AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your AV receiver.

2. Using another AUDIO/VIDEO cable, connect the TV OUT (MONITOR AUDIO/VIDEO OUT) on your TV to the TV AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your AV receiver.

The console box on the SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88 features electronic sliding doors and three AC outlets.

AC Outlets:

Your TV cord is designed to connect to one of the AC outlets on the rear of the console. This leaves two additional outlets for accessory equipment. Do not connect equipment with a combined wattage of more than 300 W / 3 A.

Operating the Sliding Doors:

The AUTO ACCESS switch on the front of the console controls the doors.

Automatic Operation (AUTO ACCESS ON):

When the switch is ON, the doors operate automatically. The sensor detects movement within its range (approx. 18 inches away, in a 40-degree horizontal and 20-degree vertical cone), causing the doors to open. They will remain open until the range is clear. The sensor may be triggered by drafts, vibrations, or other signals, causing the doors to open inadvertently.

Manual Operation (AUTO ACCESS OFF):

When the switch is OFF, the doors operate manually. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open or close the doors. They will remain in that position until the button is pressed again.

It is recommended to use the manual feature if you have small children or pets to avoid possible injury.

The EASY SETUP GUIDE feature allows you to set the on-screen language and all receivable channels. This screen appears each time you turn on the TV until the setup is complete. Ensure your antenna or cable is properly connected before you begin.

1. Press POWER to turn on the TV. The EASY SETUP GUIDE screen will appear.

2. Press CHANNEL + to select English, CHANNEL – to select Spanish, or VOLUME + to select French. The screen will update to your chosen language.

3. Press VOLUME – to continue. “AUTO PROGRAM” will appear, and the TV will automatically scan and preset all available channels. When finished, the lowest numbered channel will be displayed. If cable TV channels are found, the CABLE setting will be automatically set to ON.

To Perform AUTO SET UP Again:

1. Press the SET UP button on top of the TV.

2. Select a language using the CHANNEL or VOLUME buttons.

3. Press VOLUME – to restore factory settings. A confirmation message will appear. Press CHANNEL+ to execute or CHANNEL- to exit.

4. Press SET UP to exit.

Note: Performing AUTO PROGRAM will erase your CHANNEL FIX, TIMER, and CHANNEL BLOCK settings.

Your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88 features Picture-in-Picture (PIP) and Picture-and-Picture (P&P) to view two sources simultaneously. The control buttons are located under the cover on top of the remote.

Using PIP (Picture-in-Picture):

1. Press the yellow button with the single small box icon to display a small window picture (PIP). Each time you press it, the picture size will change (1/4 -> 1/9 -> 1/16). The sound from the main picture is heard.

2. Use the CH +/- buttons (under the cover) to change the channel in the window picture.

3. Press the POSITION button to move the window picture counterclockwise around the main screen.

4. Press SWAP to switch the audio and video between the main and window pictures.

5. Press OFF to remove the window picture.

Using P&P (Picture-and-Picture):

1. Press the yellow button with the two side-by-side box icon to display two reduced-size pictures. The picture on the right is the main picture, and its sound is heard.

2. Use the CH +/- buttons (under the cover) to change the channel in the left picture.

3. Press SWAP to switch the audio and video between the left and right pictures.

4. Press OFF to cancel P&P and return to normal viewing.

Sound and Video Source Control:

Use the TV/VIDEO button to change the video source for the secondary picture (window picture in PIP, left picture in P&P).

Use the AUDIO button to alternate the sound between the two pictures.

The CHANNEL INDEX feature displays multiple channels for direct selection.

1. Press the yellow button with the grid icon (under the remote cover) once. The current channel will appear in the center, surrounded by the first twelve receivable channels as still images.

2. A yellow frame will indicate the currently selected picture. Use the remote’s joystick to move this yellow frame to the channel you wish to view.

3. Once the yellow frame is on your desired channel, press the center of the joystick. The TV will switch to that channel for normal viewing.

Additional Controls in CHANNEL INDEX mode:

Yellow Labeled Buttons:

– Press the grid icon button again to display the next twelve receivable channels.

– Use CH +/- to cycle through receivable channels one at a time.

– Press OFF to exit CHANNEL INDEX.

White Labeled Buttons (for the center picture):

– Press TV/VIDEO to cycle the center picture through video inputs.

– Press ANT to replace the center picture with the alternate antenna/AUX input.

– Use the 0-9 buttons, CH+/-, or JUMP to select a new channel for the center picture.

You can use the on-screen menus to alter various settings on your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88. Use the remote control’s joystick for navigation.

1. Press the MENU button on the remote. The main menu will appear.

2. Press up or down on the joystick to highlight the desired main menu category (e.g., VIDEO, AUDIO, SET UP).

3. Press the center of the joystick to select and enter that menu.

4. Inside the submenu, press up or down on the joystick to move the cursor to the option you want to change.

5. Press the center of the joystick to select that option. Options for your selection will be displayed.

6. Press up or down on the joystick to make your selection or adjust a setting. For slider adjustments, press left or right on the joystick.

7. When you are done with a setting, choose MENU to return to the previous screen. Press the MENU button at any time to exit the menus completely.

The VIDEO menu allows you to customize the picture settings. To restore factory settings for a selected MODE, press RESET on the remote while the VIDEO menu is selected. The options are:

The AUDIO menu lets you adjust sound settings. To restore factory settings, press RESET while the AUDIO menu is selected. The options are:

The TIMER menu allows you to set the clock and schedule the TV to turn on and off automatically. Note that any loss of power will erase these settings.

The SET UP menu contains basic and advanced options for configuring your TV.

The FAVORITE CHANNEL feature provides a multi-picture screen of your favorite channels for quick access.

Setting FAVORITE CHANNELS Manually:

1. From the SET UP menu, select FAVORITE CHANNEL. The FAVORITE CHANNEL menu will appear.

2. Select MODE, then press the joystick to change the setting from AUTO to MANUAL.

3. Press down on the joystick to highlight position 1, then press the joystick center.

4. Use the joystick to select a channel for that position, then press the joystick center to set it.

5. Repeat for the other favorite channel positions (2 through 8).

6. Press MENU when you are done.

To reset a choice, navigate to the position you want to change, press the joystick, and then press the RESET button to clear the channel.

Using the FAVORITE CHANNEL Screen:

1. Press the button with the heart icon once. The current channel will be in the center, surrounded by your eight favorite channels as still images.

2. Use the joystick to move the yellow frame to the channel you wish to watch.

3. Press the center of the joystick to switch to the selected channel.

You can program the supplied remote to operate other Sony or non-Sony video equipment that has an infrared sensor.

1. Set the VTR 1/2/3/DVD/MDP switch on the remote to the position you want to program (e.g., VTR2 for an 8mm VCR, DVD for a DVD Player).

2. Press the CODE SET button.

3. Press the VTR/DVD (FUNCTION) button.

4. Use the 0-9 number buttons to enter the manufacturer’s code for your device. (Refer to the code tables in the PDF for the correct number).

5. Press the ENTER button.

For example, to operate a Sony 8mm VCR (preset code 302), you would set the switch to VTR2, press CODE SET, press FUNCTION, press 3, 0, 2, and then press ENTER.

If the remote does not work, try repeating the procedure with other codes listed for your equipment’s brand. If more than one code is listed, try them one by one. Entering a new code erases the previous one for that setting.

VCR Manufacturer Codes

MDP and DVD Player Manufacturer Codes

Cable Box or DBS Receiver Codes

To program for a Cable Box or DBS receiver, press CODE SET, then the DBS/CABLE (FUNCTION) button, enter the code, and press ENTER. Code tables are on page 38 of the PDF.

To reset all settings on your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88 to their original factory defaults, follow these steps:

1. First, turn the TV on.

2. While pressing and holding the RESET button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV set itself.

3. The TV will turn itself off, and then back on again.

When the TV turns back on, all settings will be reset, and the EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear, just as it did when the TV was first turned on.

If your SONY TRINITRON KV-35XBR88 has no picture (screen is not lit) and no sound, try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into a working wall outlet.

2. Try operating the TV using the buttons on the TV set itself, not just the remote, to rule out a remote control issue.

3. Check the TV/VIDEO setting. If you are trying to watch TV, it should be set to TV. If you are watching a video tape or DVD, it should be set to the correct video input (VIDEO 1, 2, 3, or 4).

4. Try changing to another channel. The problem might be with the station’s broadcast.

5. Perform an AUTO SET UP again to return the TV to its factory preset condition. (See “To perform AUTO SET UP again” on page 15 of the PDF).

If the screen is lit but the picture quality is poor or absent while sound is working, try these solutions:

1. Adjust the PICTURE setting in the VIDEO menu.

2. Adjust the BRIGHTNESS setting in the VIDEO menu.

3. Check that all antenna and/or cable connections are secure.

4. If VIDEO LABEL is set to WEB for the current input, the screen will darken to create an ideal picture for WEB TV viewing. Check this setting in the SET UP menu.

5. Perform an AUTO SET UP again to return the TV to factory presets.

If you have a clear picture but no audio, please check the following:

1. Press the MUTING button on the remote to ensure the sound is not muted. “MUTING” should not be visible on the screen.

2. Check the MTS setting in the AUDIO menu. Ensure it is set correctly for the broadcast (e.g., STEREO or MONO).

3. Make sure the SPEAKER setting is set to ON in the AUDIO menu.

4. Perform an AUTO SET UP again to reset the TV to its factory condition.

If you only see snow or static on the screen, follow these steps:

1. Check the CABLE setting in the SET UP menu. It should be ON for cable TV and OFF for antenna.

2. Check all antenna and cable connections to ensure they are secure.

3. Make sure the channel you have selected is currently broadcasting a program.

4. Press the ANT button on the remote to ensure you have selected the correct input (VHF/UHF or AUX).
