Safety

• Operate the SONY TRINITRON KV-32XBR48 only on 120 V AC.

• The plug is designed for safety purposes to fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer.

• If any liquid or solid object should fall inside the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel before operating it further.

• If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

Installing

• To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

• Do not install the TV in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

• The AC power cord is attached to the rear of the TV with hooks. Do not attempt to remove the cord from these hooks. Doing so could cause damage to the TV.

Caution on Screen Burn-in

When using TV games, computers, and similar products with your TV, keep the brightness and contrast functions at low settings. If a fixed (non-moving) pattern is left on the screen for long periods of time at a high brightness or contrast setting, the image can be permanently imprinted onto the screen. Continuously watching the same program can cause the imprint of station logos onto the TV screen. These types of imprints are not covered by your warranty because they are the result of misuse.

Note on cleaning the TV

Clean the TV with a soft dry cloth. Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine, which might damage the finish of the cabinet.

The connection you choose will depend on the cable found in your home. Disconnect all power sources before making any connections.

• For 75-ohm Coaxial Cable (VHF/UHF or Cable): Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable directly to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

• For 300-ohm Twin Lead Cable (VHF only, UHF only, or VHF/UHF): Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable to the antenna connector on the rear of the TV.

• For Both VHF (Coaxial) and UHF (Twin Lead): Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable for VHF to an optional EAC-66 U/V mixer. Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable for UHF to the same U/V mixer. Then, connect the U/V mixer’s output to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

For viewing scrambled channels, you will need a cable box. Here are the connection methods:

Setup 1: Cable box for all channels

1. Connect the incoming cable TV line to the IN port on your cable box.

2. Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable from the OUT port on your cable box to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

Setup 2: For systems with both scrambled and unscrambled channels

1. Connect the incoming CATV cable (unscrambled channels) directly to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of your TV.

2. Connect a separate cable for scrambled channels to your cable box.

3. Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable from the cable box output to the AUX (TO CONVERTER) input on the rear of the TV.

For this setup, you can switch between scrambled channels (through your cable box) and normal CATV channels by pressing ANT on your remote control.

Setup 3: Cable and an external antenna

1. Connect your CATV cable to the AUX (TO CONVERTER) input on the rear of the TV.

2. Connect your antenna cable to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

Select Cable or ANT mode by pressing ANT on the remote control.

Disconnect all power before making any connections.

Standard VCR Connection:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN port on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors (like the VMC-810S/820S, not supplied), connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your VCR to AUDIO and VIDEO IN 1 on your TV (Yellow-VIDEO, White-AUDIO Left, Red-AUDIO Right).

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect the OUT port on your VCR to the VHF/UHF port on your TV.

S-Video Equipped VCR Connection:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN port on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO connectors (like the RK-74A, not supplied), connect AUDIO OUT on your VCR to AUDIO IN 1 on your TV (White-AUDIO Left, Red-AUDIO Right).

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect the OUT port on your VCR to the VHF/UHF port on your TV.

4. Using an S VIDEO connector (like the YC-15V/30V, not supplied), connect S VIDEO OUT on your VCR to S VIDEO IN 1 on your TV.

Note: If you are connecting a monaural VCR, connect only the single audio output to the left (MONO) input on your TV.

Disconnect all power before making any connections.

Standard VCR with Cable Box:

1. Connect the single (input) jack of a splitter (not supplied) to your incoming cable connection.

2. Connect one output jack of the splitter to the IN port on your cable box and the other output jack to the VHF/UHF port on your TV using coaxial cables.

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect OUT on your cable box to IN on your VCR.

4. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your VCR to AUDIO and VIDEO IN 1 on your TV (Yellow-VIDEO, White-AUDIO Left, Red-AUDIO Right).

S-Video VCR with Cable Box:

1. Follow steps 1-2 from the standard connection above.

2. Using AUDIO connectors, connect AUDIO OUT on your VCR to AUDIO IN 1 on your TV.

3. Using an S VIDEO connector, connect S VIDEO OUT on your VCR to S VIDEO IN 1 on your TV.

Note: To view scrambled channels through your cable box, select the video input which your cable box is connected to by pressing TV/VIDEO.

Disconnect all power before making any connections.

Connecting a DBS Receiver Only:

1. Connect the cable from your satellite antenna to the SATELLITE IN on your DBS receiver.

2. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the VHF/UHF port on your TV.

3. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your DBS receiver to AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your TV.

Connecting a DBS Receiver and a VCR:

1. Connect the cable from your satellite antenna to the SATELLITE IN on your DBS receiver.

2. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the VHF/UHF-IN on your VCR.

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect VHF/UHF-OUT on your VCR to VHF/UHF on your TV.

4. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your DBS receiver to AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your VCR.

5. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your VCR to AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your TV.

Note: To view input from the DBS or VCR, select the video input which your DBS receiver or VCR is connected to by pressing TV/VIDEO on the remote control.

Disconnect all power sources before making any connections.

Connecting an Audio System (for more dynamic sound):

1. Using AUDIO connectors, connect the AUDIO OUT (White-AUDIO Left, Red-AUDIO Right) on your TV to an unused Line input (e.g., Tape-2, AUX1) on your stereo system.

2. Set your stereo to the chosen Line input and use the AUDIO menu on the TV to set your audio output (see “SPEAKER” and “AUDIO OUT” settings).

Connecting an AV Receiver (for greater control):

1. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect VIDEO 1 IN on your TV to the Monitor AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your AV receiver.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect TV OUT on your TV to the TV AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your AV receiver.

Note: You may want to use CHANNEL FIX to fix your TV’s input to the AV receiver (VIDEO 1). See “CHANNEL SET UP” in the menu for details.

The MONITOR OUT gives you the ability to use a second VCR to record a program being played by the primary VCR or to perform tape editing and dubbing. Disconnect all power sources before making any connections.

1. Connect the VCR intended for playback using the standard VCR connection instructions.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the AUDIO and VIDEO IN on your VCR intended for recording to the MONITOR AUDIO and VIDEO OUT on your TV.

Notes:

• Do not change the input signal while editing through MONITOR OUT.

• When connecting a single VCR to the TV, if the VCR LINE OUT is connected to TV VIDEO IN, do not connect the TV MONITOR OUT jacks to the VCR LINE INPUT. Doing so will cause program interference.

Disconnect all power before making any connections. For best results, connect your DVD Player directly to your TV.

Standard AUDIO/VIDEO Connection:

Using AUDIO/VIDEO connectors, connect the LINE OUT on your DVD Player to the VIDEO 1 IN on your TV.

Component Video Connection (for higher quality):

1. Using AUDIO connectors, connect the AUDIO R and L of the LINE OUT on your DVD Player to the AUDIO R and L on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

2. Using three video connectors, connect the Y, B-Y, and R-Y jacks on the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT of your DVD Player to the Y, B-Y, and R-Y jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

Notes:

• Some DVD Player terminals may be labeled Y, Cb, and Cr. If so, connect Y (green) to Y, B-Y (blue) to Cb, and R-Y (red) to Cr.

• Since the high quality pictures on a DVD disc contain a lot of information, picture noise may appear. In this case, adjust the SHARPNESS in the VIDEO menu.

Using the S-Link function:

S-Link allows your Sony components to work together. It can automatically switch the TV input to video when you press PLAY on your Sony S-Link VCR and turn the VCR and TV off together with the SYSTEM OFF button.

1. Connect your VCR as you normally would.

2. Using an S-LINK connector, connect the S-LINK jacks on your VCR and TV. Ensure the TV S-LINK connector is in the same row as the AUDIO/VIDEO connectors you are using.

Using the CONTROL S feature:

CONTROL S allows you to control your TV and other Sony equipment with one remote control.

• To control other Sony equipment with your TV’s remote, connect the CONTROL S IN jack of the equipment to the CONTROL S OUT jack on the TV.

• To control your TV with other Sony equipment’s remote, connect the CONTROL S OUT jack of the equipment to the CONTROL S IN jack on the TV.

The EASY SETUP GUIDE feature allows you to set the on-screen language and all receivable channels. This screen appears every time you turn on the TV until you perform AUTO PROGRAM.

1. Press POWER to turn on the TV. The EASY SETUP GUIDE screen appears.

2. Press CHANNEL + to select English, or use the other designated buttons for other languages.

3. Press VOLUME – to continue. “AUTO PROGRAM” will appear and the TV will start scanning and presetting channels automatically. When complete, the lowest numbered channel is displayed.

To perform AUTO SET UP again:

1. Press SET UP on top of the TV.

2. Press CHANNEL +, CHANNEL – or VOLUME + to select a language.

3. Press VOLUME – to restore factory settings. A confirmation message will appear. Press CHANNEL+ to execute or CHANNEL– to exit.

4. Press SET UP to exit.

Notes:

• Make sure the input from ANT (not AUX) is selected by pressing ANT until “AUX” does not appear next to the channel number before running AUTO SET UP.

• When you perform AUTO PROGRAM, your CHANNEL FIX, TIMER, and CHANNEL BLOCK settings will be erased.

Button	Function
TV (FUNCTION)	Activates the remote control for use with the TV.
TV POWER	Turns the TV on and off. If a video input is displayed, press TV/VIDEO until a channel number appears.
0 – 9 and ENTER	Use for direct channel selection. Press 0-9 to select a channel. The channel will change after 2 seconds, or you can press ENTER for immediate selection.
CH +/-	Press to scan through the channels (+ up or – down).
VOL +/-	Press to adjust the volume (+ up or – down).
JUMP	Press to alternate or jump back and forth between the current channel and the last channel selected using the 0-9 buttons.
MUTING	Press to mute the sound. Press again or press VOL + to restore sound.
FREEZE (yellow labeled button)	Press to freeze the picture. Press again or press OFF to cancel.
SLEEP	Press repeatedly to set the TV to shut off automatically in 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Press until “SLEEP OFF” appears to cancel.
DISPLAY	Press repeatedly to step through available displays: Status, XDS (Extended Data Service), and Caption Vision. Press until “DISPLAY OFF” appears to cancel.
TV/VIDEO	Press repeatedly to step through available video inputs: TV, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, VIDEO 3 and VIDEO 4.
ANT (AUX input)	Press to change between the VHF/UHF input and the AUX input.
MTS	Press to cycle through the Multi-channel TV Sound (MTS) options (STEREO, SAP, MONO).
SYSTEM OFF (green labeled button)	Press to turn off the TV and all other equipment connected with S-Link.

PIP allows you to view a smaller “window” picture over the full-size “main” picture. P&P (Twin View) allows you to view two reduced-size pictures side-by-side. Use the yellow labeled buttons located under the cover on the top of the remote for these operations.

Button	Function
PIP (icon)	Press to display a window picture (PIP). Each press changes the size (1/4 -> 1/9 -> 1/16). Press OFF to remove it.
P&P (icon)	Press to display right (main) and left pictures (P&P). Press OFF to cancel.
TV/VIDEO	Press repeatedly to select the video source for the PIP window or the left P&P picture.
AUDIO	Press to alternate sound between the main and window pictures (PIP) or between the left and right pictures (P&P).
CH +/-	Changes the channel in the secondary picture (window for PIP, left picture for P&P).
POSITION	Moves the PIP window counterclockwise around the main picture. This only works for PIP.
FREEZE	For PIP: Freezes the main picture and removes the window. Press again to resume. For P&P: Freezes both pictures. Press again to resume.
SWAP	For PIP: Switches the audio and video of the main and window pictures. For P&P: Switches the audio and video of the left and right pictures.
(Channel Index Icon)	Press to access CHANNEL INDEX for direct channel selection.
OFF	Press to cancel PIP or P&P functions and return to normal viewing.

The CHANNEL INDEX feature displays multiple channels on the screen for direct selection.

1. Press the CHANNEL INDEX button (grid icon) once to display the current channel in the center, surrounded by the first twelve receivable channels.

2. A yellow frame will appear to indicate the current channel selection. When you find a channel you wish to view, use the joystick on the remote to move the yellow frame to that picture.

3. Press the center of the joystick (+) to select the channel. The selected channel will be displayed for normal viewing.

Notes:

• You cannot move the yellow frame until all surrounding pictures appear.

• Sound will only be heard from the center picture while the CHANNEL INDEX screen is displayed.

1. Press the MENU button on the remote control to access the main menu.

2. Press up or down on the joystick to highlight the desired menu category (e.g., VIDEO, AUDIO, SET UP).

3. Press the center of the joystick (+) to activate it and enter that menu.

4. Press up or down on the joystick until the cursor points to the desired option you want to change.

5. Press the center of the joystick (+) to select the option. Options for your selection will be displayed.

6. Press up, down, left, or right on the joystick to make your selection or adjust the setting (e.g., moving a slider).

7. When you are done with changes, choose MENU from the on-screen options to return to the previous menu, or press the MENU button on the remote to exit the menus completely at any time.

Access the VIDEO menu to adjust picture settings. You can press RESET on the remote while the VIDEO menu is selected to restore factory settings for the selected MODE.

MODE	Select a preset picture mode: DYNAMIC (enhanced contrast/sharpness), STANDARD, MOVIE (finely detailed), or SPORTS (vivid, bright).
PICTURE	Adjust slider right (up) to increase picture contrast and create more vivid color. Adjust slider left (down) to decrease picture contrast and soften the color.
HUE	Adjust slider right (up) to increase the green tones. Adjust slider left (down) to decrease the green tones.
COLOR	Adjust slider right (up) to increase color intensity. Adjust slider left (down) to decrease color intensity.
BRIGHTNESS	Adjust slider right (up) to brighten the picture. Adjust slider left (down) to darken the picture.
SHARPNESS	Adjust slider right (up) to sharpen the picture. Adjust slider left (down) to soften the picture.
TRINITONE	Adjusts the white intensity. HIGH gives white colors a blue tint, MEDIUM gives a white tint, NTSC STD gives a red tint.
COLOR CORRECTION	Select ON to emphasize reds and blues. Select OFF to emphasize greens.

Access the AUDIO menu to adjust sound settings. You can press RESET on the remote while the AUDIO menu is selected to restore factory settings.

TREBLE	Adjusts high-pitched sounds.
BASS	Adjusts low-pitched sounds.
BALANCE	Emphasizes left or right speaker volume.
EFFECT	AUTO SRS: Automatically detects signal type. SRS: Produces a dynamic 3D sound for stereo. SIMULATED: Adds a surround-like effect to mono. OFF: Normal sound.
MTS	STEREO: For stereo broadcasts. SAP: For bilingual broadcasts. MONO: For mono reception or to reduce noise. You can also press the MTS button on the remote to cycle these options.
SPEAKER	ON: Listen to sound from TV speakers. OFF: Turn off TV speakers to listen only through an external audio system.
AUDIO OUT	Only settable when SPEAKER is OFF. VARIABLE: Sound output volume is controlled by the TV’s remote. FIXED: Sound output is at a fixed level; volume is controlled by your external audio system.

Access the TIMER menu to set the clock, timers, and channel blocks. Any loss of power will cause these settings to be erased.

CURRENT TIME SET

1. Select CURRENT TIME SET and press the joystick (+).

2. Press up/down on the joystick to select the current day (MON-SUN) and press (+).

3. Press up/down to set the hour (01-12) and AM/PM, then press (+).

4. Press up/down to set the minute (00-59), then press (+). The clock has now started.

ON/OFF TIMER

1. Select ON/OFF TIMER and press (+).

2. Select the desired timer (1 or 2).

3. Press up/down to select the day (e.g., MON-SUN, EVERY SUN-SAT) and press (+).

4. Press up/down to set the time you want the TV to turn on and press (+).

5. Press up/down to set the duration (up to 6 hours) and press (+).

6. Press up/down to select the desired channel and press (+). The TIMER indicator on your TV will light up.

To cancel a timer, press RESET while in the timer setting window.

CHANNEL BLOCK

This feature allows you to block two channels for up to 12 hours.

1. Follow steps 1-5 of the “ON/OFF TIMER” instructions above, within the CHANNEL BLOCK menu.

To erase your CHANNEL BLOCK settings, press RESET while in the CHANNEL BLOCK window.

Access the SET UP menu to configure core TV functions. If menu items are “grayed out,” press the ANT button on your remote so that a channel number appears.

Setting	Description
CABLE	Select ON if your TV is connected to a cable system. AUTO SET UP will set this automatically if a cable channel is found.
CHANNEL FIX	Fixes the TV’s input to a specific source (e.g., AUX 2-6 for a cable box, VIDEO 1 for an AV receiver). Set to OFF for normal channel switching.
AUTO PROGRAM	Signals the TV to automatically program all receivable channels.
CHANNEL ERASE/ADD	Place the cursor next to ERASE or ADD, select the desired channel using CH+/- or the 0-9 buttons and ENTER, then press the joystick (+).
CHANNEL CAPTION	Allows you to create a custom label of up to four digits for a channel. Select the channel, press (+), then use the joystick to enter letters/numbers.
VIDEO LABEL	Allows you to label each input mode (e.g., label VIDEO 1 as VHS, DVD, etc.) for easy recognition. Select the input, press (+), then select the label. If you select SKIP, the input will be skipped when pressing TV/VIDEO.
LANGUAGE	Select from available languages to display all menus.
TILT CORRECTION	(KV-35XBR48, 35XBR88, 37XBR48M only) Use this to correct any tilt of the picture. Adjust between +5 and -5.

This feature provides a multi-picture display of your favorite channels for direct selection.

Setting FAVORITE CHANNEL manually:

1. Select FAVORITE CHANNEL from the SET UP menu.

2. Select MODE, press (+), use the joystick to select MANUAL, and press (+) again.

3. Press down on the joystick to highlight a position (e.g., 1) and press (+).

4. Press up or down on the joystick to select a channel for that position and press (+).

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for other positions. Press MENU when done.

To reset a choice, select the position you want to change and press RESET on the remote to clear the channel for that position.

Using FAVORITE CHANNEL:

1. Press the FAVORITE CHANNEL button (grid icon with a heart) once.

2. The current channel appears in the center, surrounded by your eight favorite channels.

3. Use the joystick to move the yellow frame to the channel you want to watch and press (+) to select it.

You can create a custom menu with up to seven of your most-used functions.

Creating or Changing a CUSTOMIZED MENU:

1. Select CUSTOMIZED MENU from the SET UP menu.

2. Select CUSTOMIZE, press (+), display ON, and press (+) again.

3. Press down on the joystick to select a position (e.g., 1) and press (+). A menu for selection will appear.

4. Locate the item you wish to include (e.g., PICTURE, BASS) and press (+). Your choice will be added to the custom menu.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to assign items to the remaining positions. Items you have already included will appear in green. Press MENU when you are done.

To access the MAIN MENU from your CUSTOMIZED MENU:

Select MAIN MENU in the CUSTOMIZED MENU window and press (+).

To reset the CUSTOMIZED MENU choices:

When the cursor points to CUSTOMIZE or any position from 1 to 7, press RESET. All choices will be reset.

To cancel the CUSTOMIZED MENU function:

Select CUSTOMIZE in the CUSTOMIZED MENU and set it to OFF.

1. Set the VTR 1/2/3/DVD/MDP switch on the remote to the position you want to program (e.g., VTR1, VTR2, VTR3).

2. Press the CODE SET button.

3. Press the VTR/DVD (FUNCTION) button.

4. Use the 0-9 number buttons to enter the 3-digit manufacturer’s code from the chart below.

5. Press the ENTER button.

If the remote control doesn’t work, try repeating the setup using other codes listed for your equipment. If more than one code is listed, try them one by one.

• Make sure the power cord is plugged in.

• Operate with the buttons on the TV and the remote control.

• Check to see if the TV/VIDEO setting is correct: when watching TV, set to TV, and when watching video tapes, set to VIDEO 1, 2, 3 or 4.

• Try another channel. It could be a station trouble.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again using the SET UP button to return to the factory preset condition.

• Batteries could be weak. Replace the batteries.

• Press the TV (FUNCTION) button when operating your TV.

• Make sure the TV’s power cord is connected securely to the wall outlet.

• Locate the TV at least 3-4 feet away from fluorescent lights.

• Check the S-Link connection (if used).

• Check the polarity of the batteries.

• Adjust PICTURE in the VIDEO menu.

• Adjust BRIGHTNESS in the VIDEO menu.

• Check antenna/cable connections.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

• If VIDEO LABEL is set to WEB, the screen will darken. Change this setting if not viewing WEB TV.

• Press MUTING so that “MUTING” disappears from the screen.

• Check the MTS setting in the AUDIO menu.

• Make sure SPEAKER is set to ON in the AUDIO menu.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

• Adjust the COLOR setting in the VIDEO menu.

• Black and white programs cannot be seen in color.

• Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

• Try turning CHANNEL FIX off. (see “CHANNEL SET UP” in the SET UP menu).

• Use AUTO PROGRAM to add receivable channels that are not presently in the TV memory.

First, turn the TV on. Then, while pressing the RESET button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV. The TV will turn itself off, then back on. When the TV turns on again, all settings will be reset, and the EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear.
