Please follow these safety precautions when using your SONY TRINITRON KV-34XBR48C:

Power: Operate the TV only on 220 V AC.

Liquid and Foreign Objects: If any liquid or solid object should fall inside the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel before operating it further.

Handling: If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

Ventilation: To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

Installation Environment: Do not install the TV in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

AC Power Cord: The AC power cord is attached to the rear of the TV with hooks. Do not attempt to remove the cord from these hooks as doing so could cause damage to the TV.

Clean the TV with a soft dry cloth. Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine, which might damage the finish of the cabinet.

When using TV games, computers, and similar products with your TV, keep the brightness and contrast functions at low settings. If a fixed (non-moving) pattern is left on the screen for long periods of time at a high brightness or contrast setting, the image can be permanently imprinted onto the screen. Continuously watching the same program can also cause the imprint of station logos onto the TV screen. These types of imprints are not covered by your warranty because they are the result of misuse.

The connection depends on the type of cable you have:

For 75-ohm coaxial cable (for VHF, UHF, or Cable): Connect the coaxial cable directly to the VHF/UHF input on the rear of the TV.

For 300-ohm twin lead cable (for VHF, UHF): Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable to the antenna connector terminals on the rear of the TV.

For separate VHF (75-ohm coaxial) and UHF (300-ohm twin lead) antennas: You will need an optional U/V mixer (like the EAC-66). Connect the VHF coaxial cable to the mixer’s VHF input and the UHF twin lead cable to the mixer’s UHF input. Then, connect the mixer’s output to the TV’s VHF/UHF input.

To connect a cable box that provides scrambled channels, follow these steps:

1. Connect the incoming CATV cable to the IN jack on your cable box.

2. Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable from the OUT jack on the cable box to the AUX (TO CONVERTER) input on the rear of the TV.

3. If you also receive unscrambled channels, connect the incoming CATV cable to a splitter (not supplied). Connect one output from the splitter to the IN jack of the cable box, and the other output to the VHF/UHF input on the TV.

For this setup, you can switch between scrambled channels (through your cable box on the AUX input) and normal CATV channels by pressing the ANT button on your remote control.

To connect a standard VCR:

1. Attach the coaxial connector from your cable or antenna to the IN jack on your VCR.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect AUDIO (White-L, Red-R) and VIDEO (Yellow) OUT jacks on your VCR to the corresponding AUDIO and VIDEO IN jacks on your TV (e.g., VIDEO IN 1).

3. Using a coaxial connector, connect the OUT jack on your VCR to the VHF/UHF jack on your TV.

To connect an S-Video equipped VCR for enhanced picture quality:

1. Follow steps 1 and 3 from the standard VCR connection.

2. Using AUDIO cables, connect AUDIO OUT (White-L, Red-R) on your VCR to the AUDIO IN jacks on your TV.

3. Using an S-Video cable, connect the S VIDEO OUT on your VCR to the S VIDEO IN on your TV.

For the best picture quality, connect your DVD player directly to the TV. You have two options:

Component Video Connection (Best Quality):

1. Using AUDIO cables, connect the AUDIO R (Red) and L (White) LINE OUT on your DVD Player to the AUDIO R and L jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

2. Using three video cables, connect the Y (Green), B-Y/Cb (Blue), and R-Y/Cr (Red) COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks on your DVD Player to the matching Y, B-Y, and R-Y jacks on the VIDEO IN 4 panel at the rear of your TV.

Standard AUDIO/VIDEO Connection:

Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the AUDIO (L/R) and VIDEO (Yellow) LINE OUT jacks on your DVD Player to the AUDIO and VIDEO IN jacks on your TV (e.g., VIDEO 1 IN).

Connecting an Audio System (for more dynamic sound):

1. Using AUDIO cables, connect the AUDIO OUT (White-L, Red-R) jacks on your TV to an unused Line input (e.g., Tape-2, AUX) on your stereo system.

2. Set your stereo to the chosen Line input. In the TV’s AUDIO menu, set SPEAKER to OFF and select either VARIABLE or FIXED for AUDIO OUT. (See AUDIO menu instructions for details).

Connecting an AV Receiver (for greater control):

1. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the VIDEO 1 IN jacks on your TV to the Monitor AUDIO and VIDEO OUT jacks on your AV receiver.

2. Using AUDIO/VIDEO cables, connect the TV OUT jacks on your TV to the TV AUDIO and VIDEO IN jacks on your AV receiver.

The EASY SETUP GUIDE feature allows you to quickly set up your TV. This screen appears every time you turn on the TV until you complete the AUTO PROGRAM.

1. Ensure your antenna or cable is properly connected. Press the POWER button to turn on the TV. The EASY SETUP GUIDE screen will appear.

2. Press CHANNEL + to select English.

3. Press VOLUME – to continue. The TV will display “AUTO PROGRAM” and begin scanning for all receivable channels.

When finished, the lowest numbered channel will be displayed. If the TV receives cable TV channels, the CABLE setting will automatically be set to ON.

To perform Auto Set Up again:

1. Press the SET UP button on top of the TV.

2. Select a language using the CHANNEL +/- or VOLUME + buttons.

3. Press VOLUME – to restore factory settings. A confirmation message will appear. Press CHANNEL+ to execute or CHANNEL- to exit.

4. Press SET UP to exit.

Note: Performing AUTO PROGRAM will erase your CHANNEL FIX, TIMER, and CHANNEL BLOCK settings.

TV POWER: Turns the TV on and off.

0-9 and ENTER: Use for direct channel selection. Press the number buttons to enter a channel, then press ENTER for immediate selection, or wait 2 seconds for it to change automatically.

CH +/-: Press to scan through the channels up or down.

VOL +/-: Press to adjust the volume up or down.

JUMP: Press to alternate back and forth between the current channel and the last channel selected with the 0-9 buttons.

MUTING: Press to mute the sound. Press again or press VOL+ to restore sound.

DISPLAY: Press repeatedly to cycle through available displays: Status (channel info, time), XDS (Extended Data Service info, if available), and Caption Vision.

TV/VIDEO: Press repeatedly to step through the available video inputs: TV, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, VIDEO 3, and VIDEO 4.

ANT: Press to change between the main VHF/UHF input and the AUX input.

SLEEP: Press repeatedly to set the sleep timer (30, 60, or 90 minutes). The TV will shut off automatically after the selected time.

Some control buttons for PIP and P&P are located under the cover on top of the remote control.

To start PIP (small window picture): Press the button with a large rectangle and a small rectangle inside. Each press changes the window size (1/4 -> 1/9 -> 1/16). Press OFF to remove the window.

To start P&P (split screen): Press the button with two side-by-side rectangles. Press OFF to cancel.

TV/VIDEO (in PIP/P&P mode): Selects the video source for the sub-picture (window picture in PIP, left picture in P&P).

AUDIO (in PIP/P&P mode): Alternates the sound between the main and sub pictures.

CH +/- (in PIP/P&P mode): Changes the channel in the sub picture.

POSITION (PIP only): Moves the window picture counterclockwise around the main screen.

SWAP: Switches the audio and video between the main and sub pictures.

FREEZE: Freezes the image in the sub picture (or both pictures in P&P mode). Press again to resume.

CHANNEL INDEX displays multiple channels at once for direct selection.

1. Press the CHANNEL INDEX button (grid icon) on the remote. The current channel appears in the center, surrounded by the first twelve receivable channels.

2. Use the joystick on the remote to move the yellow frame to the picture you want to view.

3. Press the center of the joystick to select the highlighted channel for normal viewing.

While in CHANNEL INDEX mode, you can use the CH +/- buttons to display the next or previous set of twelve channels.

1. Press the MENU button to access the main menu.

2. Use the joystick on the remote to move up or down, highlighting the desired menu (e.g., VIDEO, AUDIO, SET UP).

3. Press the center of the joystick to enter the selected menu.

4. Inside the menu, use the joystick to move up or down to highlight the specific setting you want to change (e.g., PICTURE, TREBLE).

5. Press the center of the joystick to select the setting. For settings with a slider, use the joystick (up/down or left/right) to make the adjustment. For settings with a list of options, use the joystick to highlight your choice and press the center to confirm.

6. When you are done with a menu, select the MENU option at the bottom to return to the previous screen. Press the main MENU button at any time to exit the menus completely.

Access the VIDEO menu by pressing MENU, then selecting VIDEO. You can adjust the following:

MODE: Select a preset picture mode: DYNAMIC (enhanced contrast), STANDARD, MOVIE (finely detailed), or SPORTS (vivid, bright).

PICTURE: Adjusts contrast. Move slider right/up to increase, left/down to decrease.

HUE: Adjusts flesh tones. Move slider right/up for more green, left/down for more red.

COLOR: Adjusts color intensity. Move slider right/up to increase, left/down to decrease.

BRIGHTNESS: Adjusts the overall brightness. Move slider right/up to brighten, left/down to darken.

SHARPNESS: Adjusts picture detail. Move slider right/up to sharpen, left/down to soften.

TRINITONE: Adjusts the white color tint. HIGH (blue tint), MEDIUM (white tint), NTSC STD (red tint).

COLOR CORRECTION: Select ON to emphasize reds and blues, or OFF to emphasize greens.

To restore all VIDEO menu settings to factory defaults, press the RESET button on the remote while the VIDEO menu is selected.

Access the AUDIO menu by pressing MENU, then selecting AUDIO. You can adjust the following:

TREBLE: Adjusts high-pitched sounds.

BASS: Adjusts low-pitched sounds.

BALANCE: Adjusts the volume balance between the left and right speakers.

EFFECT: Selects a sound effect. AUTO SRS, SRS (3D sound for stereo), SIMULATED (surround-like effect for mono), or OFF.

MTS: Selects the audio mode: STEREO, SAP (bilingual broadcast), or MONO.

SPEAKER: Set to ON to use the TV speakers. Set to OFF to use only an external audio system.

AUDIO OUT (available when SPEAKER is OFF):

VARIABLE: Sound output level is controlled by the TV’s remote.

FIXED: Sound output is at a fixed level, controlled by your external audio system’s volume control.

To restore all AUDIO menu settings to factory defaults, press the RESET button on the remote while the AUDIO menu is selected.

Access the TIMER menu by pressing MENU, then selecting TIMER.

CURRENT TIME SET:

1. Select CURRENT TIME SET and press the joystick.

2. Use the joystick to set the current day (MON-SUN), hour (01-12 AM/PM), and minute (00-59), pressing the joystick after each selection.

ON/OFF TIMER:

1. Select ON/OFF TIMER and press the joystick.

2. Select timer 1 or 2.

3. Set the day or range of days (e.g., MON-SUN, EVERY MON-FRI).

4. Set the time you want the TV to turn on.

5. Set the duration (how long the TV stays on, up to 6 hours).

6. Select the channel for the TV to turn on to.

CHANNEL BLOCK: Allows you to block two channels for up to 12 hours. The setup is similar to the ON/OFF TIMER.

You can program the supplied remote to control other devices.

For a VCR, DVD, or MDP:

1. Set the VTR 1/2/3/DVD/MDP switch on the remote to the position you want to program.

2. Press the CODE SET button.

3. Press the VTR/DVD (FUNCTION) button.

4. Use the 0-9 number buttons to enter the 3-digit manufacturer’s code from the code list in the manual.

5. Press the ENTER button.

For a Cable Box or DBS Receiver:

1. Press the CODE SET button.

2. Press the DBS/CABLE (FUNCTION) button.

3. Use the 0-9 number buttons to enter the 3-digit manufacturer’s code from the code list in the manual.

4. Press the ENTER button.

If the first code doesn’t work, try other codes listed for your equipment’s brand. If you remove the batteries from the remote for too long, you may need to reset the codes.

First, turn the TV on. Then, while pressing and holding the RESET button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV itself. The TV will turn itself off, then back on. When the TV turns on again, all settings will be reset, and the EASY SETUP GUIDE will appear.

Make sure the power cord is plugged in.

Operate with the buttons on the TV and the remote control.

Check to see if the TV/VIDEO setting is correct: when watching TV, set to TV, and when watching video tapes, set to VIDEO 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Try another channel. It could be station trouble.

Perform AUTO SET UP again using the SET UP button to return to the factory preset condition.

Batteries could be weak. Replace the batteries.

Check the polarity of the batteries.

Press the TV (FUNCTION) button when operating your TV.

Make sure the TV’s power cord is connected securely to the wall outlet.

Locate the TV at least 3-4 feet away from fluorescent lights.

Check the S-Link connection (if applicable).

Adjust the PICTURE setting in the VIDEO menu.

Adjust the BRIGHTNESS setting in the VIDEO menu.

Check the antenna/cable connections.

Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

Press the MUTING button to ensure “MUTING” is not displayed on the screen.

Check the MTS setting in the AUDIO menu.

Make sure SPEAKER is set to ON in the AUDIO menu.

Perform AUTO SET UP again to return to factory presets.

Make sure CABLE is set to OFF in the SET UP menu.

Use AUTO PROGRAM to add receivable channels that are not presently in the TV’s memory.

For no color:

Adjust the COLOR setting in the VIDEO menu.

Black and white programs cannot be seen in color.

Perform AUTO SET UP again.

For only snow and noise:

Check the CABLE setting in the SET UP menu.

Check the antenna/cable connections.

Make sure the channel is broadcasting programs.

Press ANT to change the input mode.
