The SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA manual uses safety messages to help prevent personal injury and equipment damage. All safety messages are introduced by a signal word indicating the hazard level:

DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury to the operator or to bystanders.

WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury to the operator or to bystanders.

CAUTION: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in moderate or minor injury to the operator or to bystanders.

Safety messages also contain three different type styles:

• Normal type states the hazard.

• Bold type states how to avoid the hazard.

• Italic type states the possible consequences of not avoiding the hazard.

An icon, when present, gives a graphical description of the potential hazard.

The SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA has several physical controls and ports for operation and connectivity.

The SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA has five control keys located on the right side of the unit near the handgrip:

All other tool operations are controlled through the touch screen.

Your SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA can receive power from any of the following sources:

• Internal Battery: A fully charged standard battery provides sufficient power for about 3 hours of continuous operation. The internal battery is recharged whenever an outside power source is provided.

• AC/DC Power Supply: The diagnostic tool can be powered from a standard wall socket using the provided AC/DC power supply and power adapter.

• Vehicle Power: The tool receives power from the test vehicle when it is connected to a powered data link connector (DLC) with the data cable. All OBD-II/EOBD compliant vehicles are required to have battery power available on the DLC. For vehicles that do not provide power on the DLC, a separate cable adapter and power cable are needed.

IMPORTANT: Never connect the optional power cable or the AC/DC power supply to the DC power supply input on top of the unit when the diagnostic tool is communicating with a vehicle.

To power on the SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA, ensure it has a charged battery pack, is connected to a powered vehicle data link connector (DLC), or is connected to an AC power supply. The unit should automatically power on and open the Home screen. If not, press the Power key on the front of the unit.

The Home screen is the main body of the tool’s interface and has six selectable buttons for the primary functions:

You can select a module by tapping its button on the screen or by using the directional keys to highlight it and pressing the Y/√ key.

The Title bar at the top of the screen provides at-a-glance information about the current operating conditions. The icons indicate power status and communication activity.

The Scanner demonstration program allows you to become familiar with many of the test capabilities without connecting to a vehicle.

1. From the Home screen, tap the Scanner icon.

2. Tap the Demonstration button on the manufacturer menu.

3. A screen advising you are in simulation mode displays; select Continue.

IMPORTANT: Do not connect a vehicle to the diagnostic tool while in the Demonstration mode.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions and select as needed until the confirmation screen displays.

5. Select OK on the confirmation screen to load the demonstration database.

6. Select OK from the Demo mode message screen. A systems menu will display.

7. Select from any of the systems listed, then select from the submenus to explore.

IMPORTANT: All vehicle communication must be terminated before shutting down the diagnostic tool. A warning message displays if you attempt to shut down while the Scanner is communicating with the vehicle. Forcing a shut down while communicating may lead to ECM problems on some vehicles.

To power off the unit:

1. Press N/X or Back until you reach the Home screen. A “stopping communication” message appears briefly.

2. Disconnect the Scanner Data Cable from the vehicle test connector.

3. Press the Power key. The Turn off dialog box displays.

4. Press Y/√ or OK to turn the power off, or press N/X or Cancel to test a different vehicle.

Emergency Shutdown:

In case of emergency, press and hold the Power key for five seconds to force a shutdown.

The vehicle identification sequence is menu driven. Each selection advances you to the next screen.

1. Tap the Scanner button on the Home screen. A list of manufacturers displays.

2. Select the vehicle manufacturer from the list.

3. Select the vehicle year from the menu that displays.

4. A list of vehicle types or models displays. Several selections may be required to complete the vehicle identification; follow the screen prompts to enter the required information.

5. A confirmation screen displays once all required data has been entered. Select OK to continue or Cancel to return to the previous screen.

6. When the vehicle identification is confirmed, a list of systems available for testing displays. Select a system from the list to continue.

When the screen displays a “no communication” message, it means the scan tool and the vehicle control module cannot communicate with each other. The following conditions can cause this message to display:

• The Scanner is unable to establish a communication link with the vehicle.

• The vehicle is not equipped with the system that was selected.

• There is a loose connection.

• There is a blown vehicle fuse.

• There is a wiring fault on the vehicle.

• There is a circuit fault in the data cable or adapter.

• Incorrect vehicle identification was entered.

Check these conditions to resolve the issue. You may need to refer to vehicle-specific information for further troubleshooting.

To view DTCs:

From the main Scanner menu for a selected vehicle system, choose the Codes Menu option (it may also appear as Codes, Service Codes, etc.). This opens a list of viewing options such as Display Codes or Trouble Code Information. Selecting this will open a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the selected vehicle electronic control module (ECM).

To clear DTCs:

IMPORTANT: Clearing codes erases all temporary ECM information, including Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Make sure no vital diagnostic information will be lost before clearing codes.

1. Select Clear Codes from the Codes Menu. A confirmation message displays.

2. Make sure any conditions shown on the confirmation message are met, then select Yes.

3. A “codes cleared” message displays once the operation is complete.

4. Select Continue to return to the Codes Menu.

Customizing the Data List:

Limiting the number of parameters on the data list allows you to focus on suspicious data and results in a faster data refresh rate.

1. Tap the Custom Data List button on the toolbar.

2. The data selection screen displays. Toolbar buttons for Select/Deselect and Select All/Deselect All appear.

3. Touch the parameters you want to include or exclude. A check mark indicates a parameter is selected for display.

4. Select OK to display the updated data list.

Changing Screen Views:

Selecting the View button on the toolbar opens a dropdown menu of options:

• PID List: A 2-column display with parameter names and their current values.

• 1 Graph: Displays a data graph for one parameter.

• 2 Graph: Displays data graphs for two parameters.

• 4 Graph: Displays data graphs for four parameters.

Select your desired view from the menu.

Locking parameters holds selected lines of data in place at the top of the screen, preventing them from scrolling. This allows you to position related parameters together to monitor their values. Up to three parameters can be locked at a time.

To lock parameters:

1. Highlight the parameter to be locked.

2. Tap the Lock/Unlock button on the toolbar to lock it. A copy of the locked parameter appears at the top of the data list, with a lock icon next to its name.

3. Highlight and select additional parameters to lock if needed.

To unlock parameters:

1. Scroll through the data list and highlight the parameter to be unlocked.

2. Tap the Lock/Unlock button on the toolbar. The released parameter and the lock icon disappear from the list at the top of the data list.

The Trigger button allows you to configure the scan tool to automatically capture data when a parameter value crosses a set threshold.

To set trigger levels:

1. Highlight the parameter to be used for triggering.

2. Tap the Trigger button on the toolbar.

3. Select Set Trigger from the dropdown menu. A graph of the parameter displays.

4. Tap the plus (+) and minus (–) buttons to position the upper trigger level line where you want it on the graph.

5. Tap the checkmark (√) on the toolbar, or press the Y/√ key, to set the upper threshold.

6. A lower trigger level line now appears. Use the plus (+) and minus (–) buttons to position it.

7. Tap the checkmark (√) on the toolbar, or press the Y/√ key, to set the lower threshold.

8. Press Y/√ once the lower trigger is set to exit.

To arm triggers:

1. Tap the Trigger button on the toolbar.

2. Select Arm Triggers from the dropdown menu. The trigger lines on the data graphs change color to indicate an armed condition. Once armed, any data points that register outside your set conditions will pause data collection and save a recording.

Turning Wi-Fi On and Connecting:

1. From the Home screen, navigate to Tools > Settings > Configure Wi-Fi.

2. The screen will display “Wi-Fi is Off”. Select the Wi-Fi Power icon to turn the Wi-Fi radio on. Available networks will be displayed.

3. Select your desired network connection. If it is a secured network, a password will be required. Enter the password using the on-screen keyboard.

4. Select Connect. From the confirmation screen, select OK to continue using the connection.

Testing the Connection:

If you are experiencing network issues, you can use the automated testing feature.

1. Connect to your desired network.

2. From the Wi-Fi configuration screen, select the Wi-Fi Test icon to open the network connection test screen.

3. The test begins automatically. It will check Hardware, Router, Internet, HTTP, and SureTrack connectivity and display a status indicator (Red for failed, Green for satisfactory).

4. If a connection issue is present, select View Summary to review detailed results and tips.

The OBD-II Health Check offers a quick way to check for and clear emissions-related DTCs and check readiness monitors.

1. From the Home Screen, select OBD-II/EOBD.

2. Select OBD Health Check. A connection message appears.

3. Tap Continue or press Y/√ to open a submenu of test options:

• Global OBDII Code Check: Displays stored emission related generic DTCs. You can view current codes and pending codes.

• Global OBDII Clear Codes: Clears all emission related diagnostic data from the ECM memory.

• Readiness Monitors: Checks the status of the readiness monitoring system.

• MIL Status: Checks the commanded state (on or off) of the malfunction indicator lamp.

Select an option to perform the test.

1. From the Home Screen, select OBD-II/EOBD, then select EOBD.

2. From the EOBD menu, select Start Communications.

3. A vehicle type menu displays (e.g., 12V Light Duty Vehicle). Select an option from the menu.

4. A connection message displays. Connect the data cable to the test vehicle.

5. Select Continue. The scan tool establishes communication and opens an information screen.

6. Select Continue again. A “Select Service” menu of available EOBD tests opens.

7. Select a test to continue.

The information for Guided Component Tests is vehicle-specific, so you must identify the vehicle first. The following is a typical procedure:

1. Tap the Guided Component Tests button on the Home screen. A list of manufacturers displays.

2. Select the manufacturer from the list (e.g., FORD).

3. A list of model years displays. Select the year (e.g., 2008).

4. A list of models displays. Select the model (e.g., Focus).

5. A list of engines displays. Select the engine (e.g., 1.6L SIGMAL).

6. A confirmation screen displays. Select OK to confirm the vehicle identification.

7. Select a system to test (e.g., ENGINE) and then select a specific test from the list to continue.

After identifying a vehicle and selecting a component to test, a menu displays with two main information types:

• COMPONENT INFORMATION: Provides information on the selected component and connector pin details to help you understand the component prior to diagnosis.

• TESTS: Opens a pre-configured meter for performing the selected test, including instructions and tips.

To view component information:

1. Select a component from the tests list.

2. Select COMPONENT INFORMATION from the component menu. The information screen will display details such as Operation, Tech notes, Connector pin assignments, and Location.

To select and perform a test:

1. Select a component from the list.

2. Select a specific test from the component menu. The menu lists all available tests for that component.

3. Select an option from the list and the test screen, with a pre-configured meter, will display.

The Scope Multimeter module enables your SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA to function as a digital multimeter (DMM), a graphing multimeter, or a 2-channel oscilloscope.

1. Select the Scope Multimeter button on the Home screen.

2. The Scope Multimeter main menu opens. Select from the setup options:

• Lab Scope

• Graphing Multimeter

• Digital Multimeter

3. A submenu of scope or meter configurations displays. For example, under Lab Scope, you can choose options like “2 Channel Lab Scope”, “Volts DC”, “Low Amps (20)”, “Ignition Probe”, etc.

4. Tap to select the correct configuration for the test to be performed. The Scope Multimeter displays, configured for the selected test.

Most setup operations are available by selecting the Profile button on the toolbar. This opens the Trace Controls window at the bottom of the screen.

The Trace Detail controls are used to adjust individual characteristics of how the signal is sampled and displayed for each channel. Available options include:

• Profile: Switches the waveform on and off.

• Probe: Identifies the type of test probe being used.

• Peak: Maximizes the signal sampling rate for capturing fast events.

• Filter: Removes noise or interference from the waveform.

• Invert: Switches the polarity of the displayed signal.

• Coupling AC: Blocks the DC portion of an input signal to amplify the AC portion.

• Scale: Adjusts the scale (total value) of the vertical axis.

• Trigger: Switches triggering on or off, and sets which slope of the waveform triggers.

• Refresh: Clears the digital minimum and maximum values and updates the screen.

• Sweep: Adjusts the sweep (total value) of the horizontal axis.

Use the touch screen or control keys to make changes to these settings within the Profile window.

Select Previous Vehicles and Data from the Home screen to access recently tested vehicles and saved data files.

To access Vehicle History:

The tool stores the identification of the last twenty-five vehicles tested.

1. Select Vehicle History from the Previous Vehicles and Data menu.

2. A list of up to 25 previously tested vehicles displays. Scroll to view the entire list.

3. Highlight the desired vehicle and tap the vehicle ID or press the Y/√ key.

4. A vehicle ID confirmation screen displays. Select OK or press Y/√ to continue to the System Menu for that vehicle.

To view Saved Data:

1. Select View Saved Data from the Previous Vehicles and Data menu.

2. A list of all stored data movies and screen images displays in chronological order.

3. Select a file to review it on the diagnostic tool.

This menu option is used to permanently erase saved files from memory.

1. Select Previous Vehicles and Data from the Home screen.

2. Select Delete Saved Data from the menu. A list of saved files displays.

3. The Select All/Deselect All and Delete buttons become available on the toolbar so you can either delete individual files or clear the entire memory buffer at once.

4. Select a file from the list and a confirmation message displays.

5. Select an option from the confirmation message:

• OK: Deletes the selected file and returns to the saved files list.

• Cancel: Returns to the saved files list without deleting the selected file.

6. Select Back on the toolbar to return to the Previous Vehicles and Data menu, or select Home to return to the Home screen.

1. Select Tools from the Home screen.

2. Select Settings from the Tools menu.

3. The Settings menu offers several configuration options:

• System Settings: Opens a menu to adjust Display (Brightness, Color Theme, Font Type, etc.) and Date & Time (Time Zone, Clock Settings, Date Format, etc.).

• Configure Scanner: Allows you to show or hide the scales on data graphs.

• Configure Scope/Meter: Lets you change Trigger Mode, Display grid, and Divisions (Full Scale vs. Per Division).

• Configure Units: Opens a dialog box to choose between US customary or metric units for temperature, speed, pressure, etc.

Select the desired category and follow the on-screen menus to make your adjustments.

Calibrating the touch screen maintains the accuracy of the touch-sensitive display. This should be performed on a routine basis.

IMPORTANT: It is critical to complete the touch screen calibration sequence once it has begun. Never power down the unit while a screen calibration is in process, as serious damage to the unit may result.

1. Select Tools from the Home screen to open the menu.

2. Select Settings from the menu.

3. Select Touch Calibration from the menu. The calibration screen opens.

4. Touch each box on the screen as it displays.

5. The display returns to the Settings menu once the screen calibration procedure is complete.

To keep your SNAP-ON MODIS ULTRA in top shape, perform the following tasks:

• Check the housing, wiring, and connectors for dirt and damage before and after each use.

• At the end of each work day, wipe the diagnostic tool housing, wiring, and connectors clean with a damp cloth.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any abrasive cleansers or automotive chemicals on the unit.

Cleaning the Touch Screen:

The touch screen can be cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild window cleaner.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any abrasive cleansers or automotive chemicals on the touch screen.

If the battery pack no longer holds a charge, contact your sales representative to order a new one. Replace the battery pack with original Snap-on replacement parts only.

1. Loosen the two captive screws that retain the battery compartment cover on the back-side of the diagnostic tool.

2. Pull up on the inner edge of the battery compartment cover to release it, pivot the cover into an upright position, then lift the battery cover off of the housing.

3. Slide the battery down to disengage the electrical contacts.

4. Remove the battery from the tool housing.

5. Align the tabs on the sides of the battery compartment with the slots on the new battery, then place the battery into the housing.

6. Slide the battery up to engage the electrical contacts and snap it into place.

7. Fit the battery cover onto on the housing, then pivot the cover down so that it snaps into place.

8. Snug up the captive screws to hold the cover in place. Do not overtighten the screws!
