The front of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE includes the following features:

• Proximity sensors: Detect the presence of objects near the device.

• Front camera: Take self-portraits and record videos of yourself.

• Earpiece: Listen to a call.

• Status light: Displays a light when the battery is charging or fully charged, when a notification arrives, or when recording voice.

• Active key: Quickly launch features or applications with one touch.

• Volume key: Adjust the volume of your device’s sounds and audio playback.

• Power key: Press and hold to turn the device on or off, restart it, or for quick access to Airplane and Emergency modes. Press to lock or wake up the screen.

• Recent key: Tap to display recent apps, or press and hold for Home screen options.

• Home key: Return to the Home screen.

• Back key: Return to the previous screen, or close a dialog box, menu, or keyboard. Press and hold for Multi window™.

The back of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE includes the following features:

• Infrared transmitter: Controls external devices using infrared light.

• Headset jack: Connect an optional headset (not included).

• Microphone: Record audio and detect voice commands.

• Rear camera: Take pictures and record videos.

• Flash: Illuminate subjects in low-light environments when taking a photo or recording video.

• Heart rate sensor: Measure your heart rate using your fingertip when using the S Health™ app.

• Speaker: Play music and other sounds.

• USB charger/Accessory port: Connect the USB charger (included) and other optional accessories (not included).

To remove the back cover of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE, follow these steps:

1. Use the slot at the top of the back cover.

2. Lift the cover up and away from the phone.

Caution: Do not remove the rubber seal from the inside of the back cover. Doing so can cause water damage to the device if it gets wet.

Warning: Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively as this may damage the cover.

The SIM card slot is located below the micro SD card slot. To install the SIM card:

1. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card slot.

2. Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face down into the device and that the card is positioned as shown in the manual’s diagram.

Caution: If the SIM card is not inserted correctly, the device cannot detect it. Reorient the SIM card and place it back into the slot if it is not detected.

Warning: Please be careful when handling the SIM card to avoid damaging it. Keep all SIM cards out of reach of small children.

You can install an optional microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory card (not included) to add more memory space to your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE. The micro SD card slot is located above the SIM card slot.

To install, with the gold contacts facing down, carefully slide the memory card into the slot.

Note: To improve performance with high-definition video, it is recommended you use a memory card rated as at least a Class 10 with a high read speed. A memory card can be installed at any time.

Caution: If the memory card is not inserted correctly, the device cannot detect it. Reorient the card and place it back into the slot if it is not detected.

To install a replacement battery in your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE:

1. Insert the battery into the opening on the back of the device, making sure the connectors align.

2. Gently press down to secure the battery.

To replace the back cover on your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE:

1. Place the back cover onto the back of the device and press down.

2. Press along the edge of the back cover until you have a secure seal.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance. To prevent damage and maintain this resistance, follow these tips carefully:

• Whenever your device gets wet, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.

• Do not expose the device to salt water or ionized water, or to water over 1.0 meters deep for more than 30 minutes. If your device is exposed to any liquid other than fresh water, rinse it with fresh water immediately and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.

• Do not expose the device to water at high pressure.

• If the device is dropped or receives an impact, the water and dust resistant features may be damaged.

• Ensure all compartments, including the USB charger/Accessory port cover, are closed tightly. Remove any dust within the port to prevent breaking the seal.

• The touchscreen and other features may not work properly if the device is used in water or in other liquids.

To charge the battery of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE, use the included USB charger (charging head and USB cable).

1. Insert the USB cable into the USB charger/Accessory port on the device.

2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head, and then plug the charging head into a standard outlet.

3. When charging is complete, unplug the charging head from the outlet and remove the USB cable from the device.

Important: Before charging, remove any dust from the port to ensure the cover closes tightly and maintains the water-resistant seal. You should also dry the inside of the charging port before inserting a power connector. If the port is not fully dry, your device may operate abnormally.

Caution: Use only charging devices and batteries approved by Samsung to maximize battery life and avoid invalidating your warranty.

To turn the device on:

• Press and hold the Power key until the device turns on.

To turn the device off:

1. Press and hold the Power key until the Device options menu is displayed.

2. Tap Power off, and confirm if prompted.

If your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE stops responding to taps or finger gestures and you are unable to turn it off, you can restart it by pressing and holding the Power key and the Volume down key at the same time for more than seven seconds.

Lock the Device

By default, the device locks automatically when the screen times out. To lock it manually, press the Power key.

Unlock the Device

The default screen lock is Swipe. To unlock your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE, press the Power key or Home key, and then drag your finger across the screen.

To choose a more secure screen lock, see the “Set a Screen Lock” instructions in the settings section of the user manual.

You can set up your accounts when you first turn on the device or at any time through the Accounts settings.

To create or set up an account:

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General > Accounts.

2. Tap Add account.

3. Select either Samsung account or Google and follow the on-screen prompts.

The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Its main elements are:

• Status bar: Located at the top, it displays device status icons (like battery and signal) on the right and notification icons on the left.

• Widget: A simple application extension that runs directly on a Home screen.

• App shortcuts: Icons that launch your favorite applications.

• App folder: A folder that groups multiple app shortcuts.

• Home screen indicator: Dots that indicate which Home screen panel is currently visible.

• Primary app shortcuts: A set of shortcuts displayed on the bottom of all Home screens.

• Apps list: An icon that allows quick access to all of your applications.

To access the Home screen manager, either pinch the screen or touch and hold an empty space on the screen. From there, you can perform the following actions:

• Add a screen: Swipe to the end of the screens and tap Add.

• Remove a screen: Touch and hold a screen, then drag it to Remove.

• Set a main Home screen: Tap the Main Home screen icon at the top of a screen. This is the screen that appears when you press the Home key.

• Change the order of screens: Touch and hold a screen, then drag it to a new position.

• Customize Home screen settings: Tap Home screen settings to change options like the transition effect or to enable/disable Flipboard Briefing.

Add a Widget to a Home Screen

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen.

2. Tap Widgets.

3. Touch and hold a widget, drag it to a Home screen, and release it.

Remove a Widget

1. From a Home screen, touch and hold a widget to release it.

2. Drag the widget to Remove and release it.

Note: Removing a widget does not delete the widget itself, it only removes it from the Home screen.

Create a Folder

1. From a Home screen, touch and hold an app shortcut.

2. Drag the shortcut onto the Create folder icon and release.

3. You can then enter a folder name, change its color using Palette, and add more applications.

Use Folders

• To open a folder, simply tap it.

• To add more app shortcuts to a folder, touch and hold an app shortcut and drag it onto the folder.

Remove a Folder

1. Touch and hold the folder until it detaches.

2. Drag the folder to Remove and release it.

The Status bar at the top of the screen provides device information and notification alerts. Here are some common icons and their meanings:

Use the following motions and gestures to navigate your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE:

• Tap: Lightly tap an item to select or launch it (e.g., tap the keyboard to enter text or an app icon to open it).

• Touch and Hold: Touch and hold an item to activate it (e.g., touch and hold a widget to move it).

• Swipe: Lightly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen (e.g., swipe to unlock the device or scroll through menus).

• Drag: Touch and hold an item, then move it to a new location without lifting your finger.

• Pinch and Spread: Pinch the screen with your thumb and forefinger to zoom out, or spread them apart to zoom in on a picture or web page.

The Notification Panel displays calendar events, device status, and other alerts. You can access it from any Home screen.

1. Drag the Status bar down to display the Notification panel.

2. Swipe down the list to see notification details.

• To open an item, tap it.

• To clear a single notification, drag it left or right.

• To clear all notifications, tap Clear.

3. To close the panel, drag upward from the bottom of the screen or press the Back key.

The Notification Panel also provides Quick Settings for functions like Wi-Fi. Swipe left or right across the icons or tap View all to see additional Quick Settings.

After enabling Multi window, you can run multiple apps at the same time. Note that only apps located on the Multi window tray can be used together.

To launch apps in Multi Window view:

• Press and hold the Back key to display the Multi window tray, and then drag apps from the tray to the windows on the screen.

Alternatively, for recently used apps:

1. Press the Recent key.

2. Recently used apps that support Multi window will have a Multi window icon in their title bar. Tap this icon to launch the application in a split screen view.

3. Other recently used apps that support Multi window will display below the launched app. Tap an app icon to add it to the other split screen view.

Window Controls

When in Multi window view, tap the circle control in the middle of the border between the apps to access these options:

Activate Multi Window

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device > Multi window.

2. Tap the On/Off toggle to activate.

3. You can also tap Open in Multi window view to automatically view content in Multi window when you open files from My Files, Video player, or email attachments.

Customize the Multi Window Tray

1. Press and hold the Back key to display the tray.

2. Tap Tray controls > Edit for options:

• To remove an app, drag it from the tray to the storage area.

• To add an app, drag it from the storage area to the tray.

• To reorder an app, drag it to a new location in the tray.

Create a Window Group

If you often use two apps together, you can create a window group for quick access.

1. Press and hold Back to display the tray, and then drag the two apps into the windows.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the tray and tap Tray controls > Create.

Emergency mode conserves your device’s remaining power in an emergency situation by changing the screen to grayscale, restricting app usage, and turning off features like Mobile data (when screen is off), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth®.

Activate Emergency Mode

1. Press and hold the Power key to display the Device options window.

2. Tap Emergency mode. If it’s your first time, read and agree to the terms.

3. Tap Turn on.

Use Emergency Mode

The Home screen in Emergency mode provides access to essential apps and features:

• Flashlight: Use the device’s flash as a steady light source.

• Emergency alarm: Sound an audible siren.

• Share my location: Send your location to your emergency contacts.

• Phone: Launch the call screen.

• Internet: Launch the Web browser.

• Add: Add other available apps like Maps.

• Emergency call: Dial the emergency number (e.g., 911).

Turn Off Emergency Mode

From the Emergency mode Home screen, tap More options > Turn off Emergency mode.

Make a Call

1. From a Home screen, tap the Phone icon.

2. Enter a number on the keypad and tap the Dial icon.

You can also make calls by swiping right on a contact in your Contacts list or tapping a contact in your recent calls Log.

Answer a Call

When a call is received:

• Drag the Answer icon to the right to answer the call.

• Drag the Reject icon to the left to reject the call and send it to voicemail.

End a Call

Tap the End icon when you are ready to end your call.

During a call, you have several options:

• Adjust Call Volume: Press the Volume key up or down. You can also tap More options > Extra volume for a quick boost.

• Speaker or Bluetooth Headset: Tap Speaker to use the speakerphone, or tap Bluetooth to use a connected Bluetooth headset.

• Add Call: Tap Add call to dial a second number. You can then choose to Merge the calls for a conference or Swap between the two callers.

• Call Waiting: If you receive another call while on a call, you can drag the Answer icon to answer it. You will have options to put the first caller on hold, merge the calls, or end the first call.

Create a Speed Dial

You can assign up to 100 speed dial numbers (number 1 is reserved for Voicemail).

1. From a Home screen, tap Phone.

2. Tap More options > Speed dial.

3. Tap an unassigned number (Add contact).

4. Tap a contact to assign to that number.

Use Speed Dial to Make a Call

1. From the Phone app, make sure the keypad is displayed.

2. Touch and hold the Speed dial number assigned to the contact. If the number is more than one digit long, enter the first digits, then hold the last digit.

Remove a Speed Dial Assignment

1. Go to the Speed dial screen (Phone > More options > Speed dial).

2. Find the contact to remove and tap the Remove icon next to it.

Set Up Your Voicemail

1. From the Home screen, tap Phone, and then tap the Voicemail icon.

2. Follow the tutorial to create a password, record a greeting, and record your name. (Steps may vary by network).

Access Your Voicemail from Your Device

1. From the Home screen, tap Phone, and then tap the Voicemail icon.

2. Follow the voice prompts from the voicemail center. You may be prompted to enter a password.

Access Your Voicemail from Another Phone

1. From another phone, dial your wireless phone number and wait for your voicemail greeting.

2. Press the asterisk (*) key.

3. Enter your password to access your voicemail.

You can manage your apps from the Apps list (accessible by tapping the Apps icon on the Home screen).

Uninstall or Disable Apps

1. From the Apps list, tap More options > Uninstall/disable apps.

2. Apps that can be uninstalled or disabled will show an icon on their shortcut.

3. Tap the icon on the app you wish to remove and follow the prompts.

Note: Preloaded apps cannot be uninstalled, but some can be disabled (turned off and hidden from view).

Enable Disabled Apps

1. Go to Apps > Settings > Apps > Application manager.

2. Select the Turned off tab, tap the app you want to enable, and then tap Enable.

Organize Apps

From the Apps list, tap More options to sort apps, create folders, or hide/show apps.

Activity Zone provides quick access to outdoor activity-related features.

To launch Activity Zone, press the Active key on the side of your device, or tap Apps > Activity Zone from the Home screen.

The following features are available:

• Barometer: Displays your elevation and atmospheric pressure.

• Compass: Displays the compass heading, latitude, and longitude.

• Flashlight: Allows you to use the device’s flash as a light. You can set it to blink and adjust the brightness.

• Stopwatch: Allows you to use your device as a stopwatch with multiple lap times.

You can also tap Menu to navigate to other features like the S Health app.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Camera to open the camera app.

2. Use the display screen as a viewfinder to compose your shot.

• To zoom, touch the screen with two fingers and pinch or spread them apart.

• Tap the screen on an area to focus on it.

3. Tap the Take a picture icon (camera) to take a photo, or tap the Record video icon (video camera) to start recording a video.

Note: You can also press the Volume key to take a picture. This setting can be changed in the camera settings to act as a video record key or a zoom key.

You can change camera options by tapping the Shooting mode icon or the Camera settings icon (gear).

Create an Alarm

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Clock.

2. Select the Alarm tab.

3. Tap Create alarm.

4. Set the time, days, repeat options, alarm type (sound/vibration), alarm tone, volume, snooze options, and a name for the alarm.

5. Tap Done.

Delete an Alarm

1. In the Clock app, go to the Alarm tab.

2. Touch and hold an alarm, and then tap Delete.

You can manage your contacts through the Contacts app.

Add a Contact

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap Create contact.

3. Choose a storage location (device, SIM, or a synced account).

4. Enter the contact’s information, such as name, phone number, and email address, and then tap Save.

Edit a Contact

1. Open the Contacts app and tap the contact you wish to edit.

2. Tap the Edit icon.

3. Change the information as needed and tap Save.

Delete Contacts

1. In the Contacts app, touch and hold a contact to select it. You can tap other contacts to select multiple.

2. Tap Delete and confirm.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Gallery.

2. The Gallery displays available folders (e.g., Camera, Screenshots, Download). Tap a folder to open it.

3. Tap an image or video to view it in full screen.

4. When viewing an item, you can swipe left or right to see the next or previous one.

To play a video, tap it to view it, and then tap the Play icon.

Create and Send a Message

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Messages.

2. Tap the Compose icon.

3. Tap the Enter recipients field to enter a number or tap the Add recipient icon to select from your Contacts.

4. Tap the Enter message field and type your message.

5. You can tap the Attachment icon to add pictures, videos, audio, and more.

6. Tap Send to send the message.

View New Messages

When you receive a new message, an icon appears in the Status bar. You can either open the Notification panel and tap the message, or open the Messages app and tap the new message thread to view it.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Music.

2. Tap a category (e.g., Tracks, Albums, Artists) at the top left to view your music files.

3. Swipe through the list of songs and tap an entry to begin playback.

4. While playing music, you can use the on-screen controls to:

• Pause/Play: Start or stop playback.

• Rewind/Fast-forward: Tap to skip to the previous/next song. Touch and hold to move within the current song.

• Repeat: Tap to cycle through repeat modes (play once, repeat all, repeat current song).

• Shuffle: Tap to play songs in random order.

When you close the Music screen, playback continues in the background. You can access playback controls from the Notification panel.

Power Saving modes help conserve battery power by adjusting performance and features.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General.

2. Tap Power saving and select an option:

• Power saving mode: This mode saves battery power by limiting your device’s performance, limiting vibration feedback, and restricting location services and most background data.

• Ultra power saving mode: This mode saves even more battery power by applying a simplified grayscale theme to your Home screen and limiting the number of usable apps.

You can view and manage your device’s internal memory and an optional memory card (SD card).

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General.

2. Tap Storage.

From here, you can view the total and available space for both internal storage and the SD card (if installed). You can see a breakdown of used space by categories like apps, pictures, audio, and cached data.

To increase available memory:

• In the Storage menu, tap Internal storage.

• Tap Cached data and then Delete to clear cached data for all apps.

To manage a memory card (SD Card):

• To safely remove the card, tap Unmount before physically removing it.

• If the card is unmounted but still in the device, tap Mount to use it again.

• To erase all data on the card, tap Format.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General.

2. Tap Language and input.

From this screen, you can adjust the following:

• Language: Tap to select a default language for your device’s menus and keyboards.

• Default: Tap to select a default keyboard or input method (e.g., Samsung keyboard, Swype).

• Samsung keyboard / Swype / Google voice typing: Tap on a specific input method to configure its individual options, such as predictive text, themes, languages, and gestures.
