What should I know about the Passenger’s Airbag (SRS)?

This vehicle has a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS), or airbag, for both front-seat occupants. It inflates only during certain frontal collisions. It is NOT designed to inflate during a rollover or in rear, side or minor head-on collisions. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT to help you obtain the correct position for SRS inflation and protect you in all types of collision.

NEVER fit a child safety seat in the front seat of this vehicle. Children in child seats could be seriously injured by direct contact with the SRS, if it inflates. Install child restraints in the rear seat only.

What should I know about the Driver’s Airbag (SRS)?

This vehicle has a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS), or airbag, for the front-seat occupant(s). It inflates only during certain frontal collisions. It is NOT designed to inflate during a rollover or in rear, side or minor head-on collisions. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT to help you obtain the correct position for SRS inflation and protect you in all types of collision.

When you turn the ignition switch to “ON”, the SRS light in the instrument panel should come on briefly. If it does not, or if it comes on when the car is in motion, the SRS may not work properly. See your SAAB dealer for service immediately.

Before service or scrapping of SRS components, see the Owner’s Manual.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE OF THE SRS IS NOT REQUIRED.

What is the safe working load for the jack and what precautions should I take when using it?

The safe working load for the jack is 900 kg.

WARNING: Do not get bodily under a vehicle that is supported only by a jack. Use vehicle support stands.

What does the Main beam indicator light mean?

This light will show when the main beam headlights are on.

When does the Washer fluid indicator light come on?

This light will come on when the washer fluid in the reservoir needs replenishing.

What does the ABS warning light indicate?

This light comes on if a fault arises in the Anti-Lock Brake System. Conventional braking will still be available but without the Anti-Lock System.

Have the Anti-Lock Brake System checked by an authorized Saab dealer without delay.

What should I do if the Charging warning light comes on?

This light indicates the battery is not being charged. If it comes on while you are driving, stop the car immediately and switch off the engine.

Check the engine drive belt. A broken belt means that the engine will not cool properly, the battery will not be charged and power steering will be lost.

When does the Fuel warning light come on?

This light will show when less than approximately 10 litres (2 imp. gal) of fuel remains in the tank.

What does the Rear fog lamp indicator light mean?

This light will show when the rear fog lamp is switched on.

What does the Handbrake warning light indicate?

This light will show when the handbrake is applied.

What happens if the Traction Control System (TCS) CTRL warning light comes on (optional feature)?

This light indicates a fault in the Traction Control System. An emergency limp-home system can be engaged by releasing the accelerator completely. With the limp-home system active, throttle is controlled by a cable, performance is reduced, and more force is needed to depress the accelerator.

WARNING: If the warning light comes on while driving, the emergency system won’t engage unless you release the accelerator completely. Performance will be reduced, and greater force needed to depress the accelerator. If you don’t engage the emergency system, the car won’t respond to the accelerator, and the engine will idle.

Have the system checked by an authorized Saab dealer promptly.

On manual gearbox cars, a flashing TCS CTRL light indicates the system is temporarily inoperative (e.g., due to brake overheating) and does not indicate a fault.

During ignition check, the TCS CTRL and ABS lights come on and should go out after the engine starts (may take up to 60 seconds).

What does the Traction Control System (TCS) indicator light mean (optional feature)?

This light (in the rev counter) comes on when the TCS is actively working, meaning wheel grip is less than needed for the desired acceleration. This indicates a slippery road surface, so drive with extra care.

You will notice the engine is less responsive to the accelerator when this light is on.

The TCS enhances comfort and safety but doesn’t allow for faster driving with impunity. Use the same care on slippery roads as you normally would.

What should I do if the Brake warning light (!) comes on?

This light indicates the brake fluid level is too low. If it comes on while driving, stop immediately and check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.

On cars with ABS, this light also comes on with the ANTI LOCK warning light if there’s a drop in pressure in the brake servo system. If this happens, power assistance will disappear suddenly after a few braking operations.

WARNING: If brake servo effect is lost, braking power is heavily reduced, and much higher pedal pressure is needed. Never drive the car when this warning lamp is on. Have the brake system inspected immediately by an authorized Saab garage.

What does the indicator light for rear-window heating show?

This light shows when the rear-window heating is switched on.

What information does the Pictogram display show?

The pictogram indicates if any door (including the boot lid) is not properly closed, or if a bulb for dipped headlights, stop lights, or rear lights has blown. It also incorporates the oil pressure warning light.

What should I do if the Oil pressure warning light comes on?

This light means engine oil pressure is too low. If it flashes or stays on while driving, stop the car immediately, switch off the engine, and check the oil level. Do not drive the car while this light is on.

What does the SRS warning light indicate (optional feature)?

This lamp flashes or shines steadily if a fault develops in the SRS system. This could mean the SRS might fail to activate in a collision. Have the system inspected and repaired immediately by an authorized Saab garage.

The light illuminates briefly when the ignition is turned to start or drive, and should extinguish after the engine starts.

How should I interpret the Rev counter?

The rev counter shows engine speed in thousands of RPM. Keep the needle in the green zone for maximum fuel economy.

The needle may briefly enter the broken red zone but must never enter the solid red zone.

A safety cut-out prevents engine speed from exceeding approximately 6,000 r/min.

How should I read the Pressure gauge (Turbo models only)?

This gauge shows pressure in the inlet manifold.

White zone: Indicates depression (vacuum) during light load or engine overrun.

Orange zone: Indicates boost pressure from the turbocharger at higher engine speeds/loads.

Red zone: Normally, the needle shouldn’t enter this zone due to a safety cut-out limiting charging pressure. Briefly entering the red zone under certain atmospheric conditions isn’t necessarily a malfunction. However, if the needle repeatedly enters the red zone accompanied by a loss of engine power (due to the safety cut-out), have the car checked by an authorized Saab workshop without delay.

What should I do if the Temperature gauge needle approaches or enters the red section?

The pointer should normally be in the middle.

If it approaches the red section (possible in high ambient temps or high engine loads): Select the highest possible gear to reduce engine speed, avoid changing down.

If it moves into the red section despite these measures: Stop the car and let the engine idle.

If it repeatedly moves into the red section: Stop as soon as possible and check the coolant level.

Turbo models: Check if the CHECK RADIATOR LEVEL warning lamp is lit, indicating low coolant in the expansion tank.

How do I set the Clock?

Set the correct time using the knob in the middle of the clock dial (located to the right of the main instrument display).

What information does the EDU trip computer provide?

The EDU (Electronic Display Unit) trip computer provides (depending on model/equipment):

Average fuel consumption

Current fuel consumption (shown as a bar graph in manual cars)

Range (based on fuel level and average consumption; arrow flashes below 30 miles/50 km if another function is selected)

Outside temperature (automatically displayed between +3°C and -3°C at ignition on, overriding battery voltage, until another function is selected or temperature moves outside -6°C to +6°C)

Battery voltage (displayed when ignition turned to drive; shows lowest voltage during starting, then reverts to last selected function)

Press the INFO button repeatedly to cycle through these functions displayed below the speedometer.

What automatic warnings does the EDU trip computer display?

The following warnings appear automatically in the right-hand part of the display:

CHECK ENGINE: Indicates a malfunction in the fuel injection or ignition system. The car may still be drivable but with reduced performance. Have the systems checked promptly by an authorized Saab workshop.

CHECK RADIATOR LEVEL: Comes on if the coolant level in the expansion tank is too low.

These warnings should briefly appear then extinguish one by one within four seconds when the ignition is switched on.

9000 CS: If one rear indicator bulb burns out, the other flashes at twice the normal rate.

How do I adjust the instrument illumination brightness?

Use the dimmer control located on the left of the facia.

How do I operate the rear fog light?

Switch it on using the switch on the instrument panel. The rear fog light only operates when the headlights are on.

Make sure you are familiar with the local laws regarding the use of rear fog lights.

WARNING: Avoid following the rear lights of a vehicle in front in poor visibility. If they brake suddenly, it could lead to an accident.

How and when should I use the hazard warning lights?

Press the switch located to the right of the clock. All four direction indicators will flash simultaneously. An indicator light in the switch and both direction repeater lights on the instrument panel will also flash.

Use only if the car constitutes a danger or obstruction due to a collision or breakdown.

Remember to place a warning triangle 50-100 yards behind the car (further if visibility is limited) to warn approaching vehicles.

How do I operate the windscreen wipers and washers?

Use the stalk switch. It has the following positions:

Position 1: Intermittent operation (double sweep every few seconds). Good for light rain/drizzle.

Position 2: Low speed.

Position 3: High speed.

To operate the washers (windscreen and headlights) and wipers, lift the stalk towards the steering wheel. This works irrespective of the stalk’s main position.

How do I operate the rear window wiper/washer (9000 CS optional equipment)?

Use the same stalk as the windscreen wipers. It has additional positions:

ON/OFF position: Select for intermittent operation.

T position: Select for wash/wipe operation. After a few sweeps, the wiper reverts to intermittent operation if previously selected.

How does the interior lighting work?

The system includes a dome light, rearview mirror light, front passenger reading light, two rear passenger reading lights, and door lights.

Use the overhead switch for the dome light and front reading light:

Position 0: Lighting off.

Position 1: Lighting comes on when a door is opened. (May have delayed extinguishing: turns off via time-delay relay 15 secs after last door closed, or when ignition turned to drive).

Position 2: Lighting on continuously.

Rear reading lights have their own switches. Door lights come on automatically when the respective door is opened.

How does the luggage compartment lighting work?

It switches on/off automatically when the door is opened/closed. It can be manually switched off using the switch (move to middle position).

Where are the front fog lights located and how are they operated (if equipped)?

Some variants have extra fog lights integrated into the front spoiler. The switch is located under the headlight switch. Ensure you are familiar with local laws regarding their use.

How do the climate-control systems draw in and distribute air?

Fresh air is drawn through an intake at the bottom of the windscreen, passes through a filter, enters the climate-control system, and is distributed into the cabin.

For maximum AC and ACC efficiency, windows and sunroof (if fitted) should be closed.

Air evacuation: On 9000 CD models, air exits via a grille in the right-hand side panel of the boot. On 9000 CS models, there are two air outlets on each side of the rear window.

How do I operate the Manual Climate-Control System?

Fan Speed: Use the fan switch (four speeds). Turn clockwise to increase airflow.

Temperature Control: Use the TEMP knob for infinitely variable temperature control. Turn clockwise to increase temperature.

Air Distribution: Use the DISTR control to direct air:

– To windscreen/side windows (defroster)

– To floor vents

– Through panel vents

– Intermediate positions distribute air between floor/defroster or floor/panel vents.

Panel vents have joysticks to direct airflow and knobs to adjust airflow amount individually.

Heated Rear Window/Mirrors: Use the switch (incorporating the symbol). An indicator light on the instrument panel shows when it’s on. Switch off when clear. Heating switches off automatically after 10-15 minutes. (Door mirrors heated only if electrically operated). Avoid placing hard/sharp objects on the rear parcel shelf. Do not switch on before the engine is running.

Air Conditioning (AC) (if equipped): Press the button (*) to activate (fan must be in position 1-4). A time-delay prevents immediate engagement at idle; engine speed increases slightly. AC works down to freezing point. It may cut out temporarily under very high engine load (>85% throttle) and restart automatically. Can be used in cold weather to help demist windows, even at low fan speed.

Air Recirculation: Press the button (symbol showing air circulation within car outline) to recirculate cabin air. Use in hot weather for rapid cooling. Do not use in cold weather as it can cause ice/mist on windows.

How can I get maximum heating in very cold weather with the manual system?

1. Start engine.

2. Set fan speed to 2 and air distribution (DISTR) to defroster.

3. Once the temperature gauge needle starts to rise, increase fan speed to 3.

4. When windscreen is clear, move DISTR control one step left (towards floor/defroster).

Note: Heating time depends on driving style (faster at higher engine speeds). Avoid fan position 4 for heating; it’s for maximum cooling.

How does the Automatic Climate Control (ACC) system work?

ACC maintains the desired cabin temperature regardless of ambient temperature by automatically adjusting fan speed, air distribution, and heating/cooling.

The displayed temperature is a target comfort level, not the actual cabin air temperature, factoring in airflow, humidity, sun load, etc.

Normal setting range is 19-23°C (66-73°F). Adjust in 1°C steps.

During warm-up, consider closing middle panel vents if you dislike warm air blowing directly.

Selectable range: 17-27°C (63-80°F), plus HI (max heat/fan) and LO (max cool/fan).

Sensors used: Ambient air (via EDU), Inside air (below clock), Sun sensor (top of dash), Blended air (in heater unit). Do not obstruct the sun sensor.

How does the ACC system behave when starting in cold or warm weather?

Starting in Cold Weather: Initially selects rear-window/mirror heating, defroster setting, maximum heat, and low fan speed. Air may briefly (<30 secs) go to floor vents. Once supply air is warm, it distributes through floor vents, fan speed increases. As cabin temp approaches target, fan speed and heat reduce automatically.

Starting in Warm Weather: Initially directs fresh air through panel vents at high fan speed, AC compressor on (unless ECON pressed). Air may briefly (<30 secs) go to floor vents. Recirculation activates after ~1 minute if ambient temp > 27°C. As cabin temp approaches target, fan speed reduces automatically.

How do I set the desired temperature on the ACC system?

1. Switch on the ignition.

2. Select the desired temperature using the up/down arrow buttons.

3. Use the sliding control below the display to choose Celsius or Fahrenheit.

The selected temperature is stored and retained after ignition off, becoming the target temperature next time the car is run.

How do I use the ACC control panel functions?

AUTO: Press for fully automatic control of temperature, air distribution, fan speed, rear window/mirror heating, and recirculation. Cancels manual selections (unless programmed).

ECON: Press to run the system with the AC compressor off. Temperature, distribution, fan speed, heating remain automatically controlled.

OFF: Press to switch the entire ACC system off. Press OFF or AUTO to switch back on (reverts to last manual selections if OFF is pressed again).

Rear Window/Mirror Heating Button: Manually switches heating on/off. Function turns off automatically after 10-11 minutes.

Rear Door Demister Fan Button: Manually switches rear door fans on/off (they normally run automatically with main fan).

Air Recirculation Button: Manually selects/cancels recirculation. Does not significantly change air quality.

Fan Speed Buttons (Up/Down Arrows): Press and hold to manually adjust fan speed steplessly (takes ~8 secs min to max). Middle LED indicates AUTO fan control; top/bottom LEDs indicate manual control (increase/decrease respectively).

Air Distribution Buttons:

Defroster: Manual selection. High fan speed, max air to defroster/rear doors, rear window heat on. Recirculation off. Stays active until another mode selected (rear window heat off after ~10 mins). Press again to return to previous setting.

Defroster/Floor: Air to defroster and front/rear floor vents. Small amount to panel vents.

Floor: Max air to all floor vents. Small amount to defroster vents.

Floor/Panel: Air to panel vents and front/rear floor vents. Small amount to defroster vents.

Panel: Air only to panel vents. Small amount to defroster vents.

Manual selections override AUTO for that specific function; other functions remain automatic. Press AUTO to return all functions to automatic control. LED indicators show which functions are active/manually selected.

How can I program the ACC system to remember manual settings?

You can save manually selected functions (e.g., specific air distribution) so they are automatically selected each time the ignition is switched on.

1. Select the desired functions manually.

2. Press and release the AUTO and ‘+’ (Panel/Floor) buttons simultaneously. The ACC display and LEDs will start flashing to confirm.

Note: Wait at least 4 minutes after switching off ignition before testing programmed functions.

How do I cancel programmed ACC settings?

Press and release the OFF and AUTO buttons simultaneously. The display and LEDs will start flashing to confirm cancellation.

How do I calibrate the ACC system?

Calibration is needed if the power supply has been interrupted (e.g., battery disconnected).

Press the AUTO and ‘OFF’ buttons simultaneously. The indicator light next to the OFF button will come on, indicating calibration/self-test is in progress. The right-hand indicator lights will cycle on from bottom to top.

During calibration, the display shows ‘0’ or a number (1-5) indicating detected faults.

When complete, the ACC reverts to displaying the selected temperature. The process takes about 30 seconds.

What should I do if the windows mist or ice up unexpectedly with the ACC system?

This usually only occurs in extreme weather (heavy rain, cold) with high humidity or damp occupants/clothes. Recommended action:

1. Select AUTO and a temperature of 21°C (70°F).

2. If not enough, select Defroster mode.

3. If still not enough, manually increase the fan speed.

4. If necessary, increase the selected temperature.

What are some basic troubleshooting tips for the ACC system?

Before visiting a Saab garage:

If the LED by the AUTO button doesn’t light up: Try cancelling ACC programming (press OFF + AUTO simultaneously).

If the ACC system doesn’t work satisfactorily: Try performing a calibration (press AUTO + OFF simultaneously).

If the battery has been disconnected or lost charge: The ACC system will need recalibration.

How do I adjust the front seat head restraint?

For best protection, the head restraint should be level with the occupant’s head.

To raise the head restraint: grip it on either side and pull it straight up.

To lower the head restraint: press the top straight down.

How do I adjust the front seat legroom?

Lift the bar under the front of the seat and slide the seat to the desired position. Release the bar and check that the seat is locked in the new position.

How do I adjust the front seat thigh support?

Lift the lever located at the front side of the seat cushion base to raise the front of the cushion.

How do I adjust the driver’s seat height?

Pull forward the telescopic lever located on the side of the seat base and raise or lower the lever until the desired height is obtained.

How do I adjust the driver’s seat lumbar support?

Turn the round knob on the side of the backrest. Position 1 makes it harder, position 2 makes it softer.

How do I adjust the front seat backrest rake angle?

Turn the wheel located at the base of the backrest until the backrest is in the desired position.

What warnings should I be aware of when adjusting the driver’s seat?

The car must be stationary during adjustment of the driver’s seat.

When the car is being driven, the backrest should be in an upright position to ensure that the seat belt and backrest will provide the best possible protection during heavy braking or in the event of a collision.

How do I operate the electrically adjustable front seats?

The controls are located on the side of the seat base.

The top control (1) adjusts the backrest rake angle.

The lower control (2) adjusts legroom and individual height of the front (thigh support) and back of the seat.

When can the electrically adjustable seats be operated?

The seats incorporate a safety feature enabling them to be operated with the ignition switched off if the door is open. If the door is closed, however, the ignition must be switched on. This feature makes it easier to enter the car and also minimizes the danger of injury to children who happen to be playing with the seat.

How can I manually adjust the seat legroom if there’s an electrical fault?

In the event of an electrical fault, a special winder included in the tool kit can be used.

From underneath at the back of the seat, insert the winder in the electric motor (the one on the right-hand side, nearest to the back of the seat).

Turn the crank clockwise to move the seat rearwards and counter-clockwise to move the seat forward.

How do I store a seat setting using the memory function (optional)?

After the seat has been adjusted by means of the ordinary controls, the seat setting can be stored in the memory by simultaneously pressing the memory (M) button and one of the position buttons (1, 2 or 3).

How do I recall a stored seat setting using the memory function?

Keep the required position button (1, 2, or 3) depressed while the seat is assuming its stored setting.

How do I change a stored memory seat setting?

Re-adjust the seat by means of the ordinary controls, and then depress simultaneously the M button and the required position button (1, 2, or 3).

When can the memory seat functions be operated?

The seats incorporate a safety feature enabling them to be operated by means of the setting or memory buttons with the ignition switched off if the door is open. If the door is closed, however, the ignition must be switched on.

How do I operate the electrically heated front seats?

The car has adjustable electric heating for both the driver’s and co-driver’s seat cushion and backrest. Controls are located on the centre console.

The heat output can be adjusted individually for each seat in three steps using the switches. Position 3 provides maximum heat, while position 0 switches the heating off.

Why is it important to wear seat belts?

Seat belts should be worn at all times. Research has established that it is equally dangerous for rear-seat passengers not to wear seat belts. In the event of a collision, unrestrained rear-seat passengers are thrown violently forward against the front-seat backrests. This doubles the force put on the front-seat occupants and seat belts, frequently resulting in injury to all the occupants. Each belt may only be worn by one person at a time.

What are the important safety warnings regarding seat belt use?

• Seat belts are designed to bear upon the bony structure of the body, and should be worn low across the front of the pelvis, or the pelvis, chest and shoulders, as applicable: wearing the lap section of the belt across the abdominal area must be avoided.

• Seat belts should be adjusted as firmly as possible, consistent with comfort, to provide the protection for which they have been designed. A slack belt will greatly reduce the protection afforded to the wearer.

• Care should be taken to avoid contamination of the webbing with polishes, oils and chemicals, and particularly battery acid. Cleaning may safely be carried out using mild soap and water. The belt should be replaced if webbing becomes frayed, contaminated or damaged.

• It is essential to replace the entire assembly after it has been worn in a severe impact even if damage to the assembly is not obvious.

• Belts should not be worn with straps twisted.

• Each belt assembly must only be used by one occupant; it is dangerous to put a belt around a child being carried on the occupant’s lap.

• No modifications or additions should be made by the user which either prevent the seat belt adjusting devices from operating to remove slack, or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove slack.

How do I fasten the seat belts?

Apart from the belt for the middle rear-seat passenger, the seat belts are of the inertia reel type. To fasten a seat belt, pull the strap gently out of the reel and insert the tongue in the lock. Make sure that the tongue is properly secured.

What are seat belt pretensioners and when do they activate?

The seat belts for the front seats are equipped with an automatic belt pretensioner. These seat-belt pretensioners are always activated in a severe head-on collision but are not triggered by lighter frontal collisions. They restrict the forward movement of the wearer in a collision. Rear-end and side collisions do not activate the pretensioners, nor are they activated if the car rolls over.

When should seat belts and related components be inspected or replaced?

Seat belts, seat-belt pretensioners and other constituent parts must be inspected after every collision. Saab recommends replacing all component parts of the seat belts in use during a collision. No replacement is required after a minor collision if an authorized Saab garage finds that no damage has occurred and judges everything to be in proper working order.

Seat belts and components that were not in use during the collision must also be inspected and replaced if they show signs of damage or faulty operation.

If the airbag system has been activated, both front seat-belts must be changed.

How do I adjust the height of the front seat belt guide on the door pillar?

The height of the belt guide on the door pillar is adjustable. It is normally set in the upper position for greatest protection. On short persons, the diagonal strap may run too close to the neck. To alter the height, squeeze the sliding piece as indicated by the arrows and move it to the desired position until the strap runs across the body somewhat below the neck. Make sure that the guide is securely locked in the new position.

How should the seat belt be worn for maximum protection?

The seat belt should be worn with the hip strap low across the hips and the diagonal strap well in on the shoulder but not too close to the neck. Make sure that the belt is not twisted or rubbing against any sharp edges and that there is no unnecessary slack in the straps.

Do not recline the backrest by too great an amount as the seat belt is designed to provide protection when the seat is adjusted to an ordinary seating position.

How do I release the seat belt?

To release the buckle, press the red button marked PRESS.

When does the seat belt inertia reel lock?

Most of the time when the belt is being worn the reel will not be locked, thus allowing freedom of movement. However, the reel will lock if the strap is jerked or withdrawn sharply, if the car is tilted at a steep angle, or if the car is braked hard or is involved in a collision.

How do I adjust the middle rear seat lap belt?

The belt for the middle rear-seat passenger is of the lap-belt type and can be adjusted manually. If required, lengthen the belt before fastening it by holding the adjuster at right angles to the strap and pulling the strap out. Tighten the belt by pulling the free end until the belt fits snugly against the body. To release the belt, press the red button on the buckle.

How should pregnant women wear seat belts?

Expectant mothers should take care to fit the belt such that it does not apply pressure to the abdomen. The hip strap should be as low as possible across the hips.

What should I be aware of regarding seat belts when folding the rear seat?

Make sure that the belts do not become trapped when the rear-seat cushion is tipped forward or folded back.

What is the Airbag (SRS system)?

The car’s SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) consists of an airbag incorporated in the steering wheel. On some variants, an airbag is also fitted on the front passenger’s side. The system is fitted as a complement to the seat belts and provides additional safety in the event of a collision.

When does the driver’s airbag inflate?

When the system is activated at the instant of a collision, the airbag incorporated in the steering wheel is inflated. The airbag will be inflated in the event of a severe frontal collision but will not activated by a minor head-on, rear-end or side collision or by the car rolling over.

What does the SRS warning lamp indicate?

An SRS warning lamp in the pictogram lights up or flashes if a fault arises in the Supplementary Restraint System. If the warning lamp starts flashing or fails to go out when the car is being driven, the car should be taken immediately to an authorized Saab garage for checking. If the SRS warning lamp lights up or starts flashing, it could mean that the system would not be activated in the event of a collision.

What are the safety warnings related to the Airbag (SRS) system?

• Even though the car is equipped with a Supplementary Restraint System, seat belts must be worn by all the occupants.

• Note that since the airbag inflates and deflates extremely rapidly, it affords no protection in the event of a second collision occurring during the same accident.

• When driving, you should adopt a position with your entire back resting against the seat backrest and not sit hunched over the steering wheel. Otherwise, if the airbag is activated, you could be thrown forcibly against the backrest and sustain injury.

• Never attach any objects to the steering wheel as they could injure your face when the airbag is inflated.

• The driver’s seat should always be adjusted so that the warning lamp is not obscured by the steering wheel.

When should the SRS system be checked?

The system should be checked in accordance with the service programme. Also, if the warning lamp starts flashing or fails to go out when the car is being driven, the car should be taken immediately to an authorized Saab garage for checking.

How does the optional front passenger airbag work?

As an option, the car can be equipped with an airbag for the front-seat passenger. The system is of the same type as fitted for the driver. It is connected to and monitored by the same SRS warning lamp. The front passenger airbag is located behind a cover on the dash. Both systems will be activated during a collision.

What are the warnings regarding child safety and airbags?

• Child seats should always be fitted to the rear seat. Otherwise the child could be injured by the airbag in a collision.

• Children should not stand in front of the front passenger seat as they could be seriously injured by the airbag in a collision.

• Do not place any objects on the dash or in front of the seat as they could injure the car occupants in a collision or interfere with the operation of the airbag. Also make sure that no accessories are mounted on the instrument panel.

• In cars equipped with an airbag on the front passenger’s side, no child seat of any type should be fitted to the passenger seat. In the event of a collision the child could be injured by the airbag. For this reason, the passenger seat has no mounting lugs or colour markings for a child seat.

What precautions must be taken before performing welding or painting on a car with SRS?

• No modifications affecting the steering wheel or the electrical system should be made to cars fitted with a Supplementary Restraint System.

• Both battery cables and the SRS electronic unit must be disconnected before any welding work is commenced. Following this, wait at least 20 minutes before starting on the actual work.

• The electronic unit must be removed from the car before quick-drying after painting.

What needs to be done with airbags and seat-belt pretensioners before scrapping the car or after a collision?

• Airbags and seat-belt pretensioners must be activated before the car is scrapped or when system components are removed for scrapping.

• Airbags and seat-belt pretensioners that have been activated in a collision must be replaced.

• Work involving the replacement or scrapping of airbags or seat-belt pretensioners must be carried out by an authorized Saab garage.

What is the general advice for child safety in the car?

The safety of children in the car is just as important as that of adults. For maximum safety when travelling in the car, children should be restrained in some way. The form of restraint used must be adapted to the size of the child. Before fitting any kind of safety seat, harness, booster cushion, etc., you should first consult your Saab dealer.

Make sure you are familiar with the law and other regulations dealing with the fitting of child seats and how children should be seated in the car.

Children should always be restrained in some way when travelling in the car.

Where are the mounting points for child seats?

The child seats available from your Saab dealer have been approved by Saab Automobile AB and require no other anchorage besides the car’s regular lap-diagonal seat belts.

Four mounting lugs are provided under the front passenger seat for other child seats which require anchorage points under the seat. NOTE! Mounting lugs at the front are not fitted in cars equipped with an airbag on the passenger’s side.

In cars with electrically adjustable front seats there are four light-blue colour markings on the seat frame where child safety seats are to be anchored. NOTE! There are no front colour markings on cars equipped with an airbag for front passenger.

What warnings apply when fitting child seats to the front passenger seat (in cars without a passenger airbag)?

• Child seats fitted to the front passenger seat in cars not equipped with an airbag on the passenger’s side must not be secured to the legroom adjustment control. In an accident, the seat may move and have a detrimental effect on the anchorage of the child restraint.

• When a child safety seat designed for children weighing more than 10 kg is fitted facing rearwards on the passenger seat, make sure that the backrest of the child seat rests against the instrument panel. Carefully follow the installation instructions supplied with the child safety seat.

• When a child safety seat designed for children weighing 0-10 kg is fitted on the front passenger seat, it should be fitted so that its backrest is at least 20 cm away from the instrument panel.

What is the recommended position for fitting a rearward-facing child seat in the rear?

For a child seat which is approved for rearward-facing installation on the rear seat, the place recommended for it is in the centre seating position. In such case, the child seat should be secured using the two rear mounting lugs under the driver’s and front-seat passenger’s seats. When a child seat is fitted on the rear seat facing rearwards, Saab recommends using a floor-mounted support for it. Contact your Saab dealer.

What is important when installing any child safety seat?

Always read the manufacturer’s installation instructions supplied with the seat before fitting a child safety seat.

It is just as important to ensure that the straps on the child seat are properly tightened. They must on no account be left slack. The child seat should be fitted as securely as possible to provide optimum protection for the child.

What types of Saab child safety seats are available?

Your Saab dealer stocks specially-adapted child safety seats for your car. They are approved by Saab Automobile AB and designed to provide the same degree of protection in the car as for adults. The child safety seat is available in three different versions, depending on the weight of the child: 0-10 kg, 9-18 kg and 15-36 kg.
