The safest place for children in a car is in the back seat.

(Note: Some models may have a specific label regarding this on cars for certain markets).

How should the jack be used safely?

The jack is designed only for changing a tire or mounting tire snow chains.

The car must be level, and the jack must be placed on firm and level ground.

Never crawl underneath the car when it is jacked up.

The safe working load is 900 kg.

Use only on level, firm ground.

For further jacking instructions, see your Owner’s Manual.

What does the main beam indicator light mean?

This light shows when the main beam (high beam) headlights are switched on.

What does the washer fluid indicator light mean?

This light comes on when the washer fluid in the reservoir needs replenishing.

What should I do if the ABS warning light comes on?

This light indicates a fault in the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). Conventional braking will still be available, but without the anti-lock function. You should have the Anti-Lock Brake System checked by an authorized Saab dealer without delay.

What should I do if the charging warning light (+) comes on while driving?

This light indicates that the battery is not being charged. Stop the car immediately and switch off the engine.

Check the engine drive belt. A broken belt means the engine will not cool properly, the battery will not be charged, and power steering will be lost.

What does the indicator lamp under the fuel gauge mean?

This lamp lights up when there is less than 10 litres (2 imp. gal) of fuel left in the tank.

IMPORTANT: If you run out of petrol, the catalytic converter could be damaged. Air following the fuel can cause the converter’s temperature to increase significantly, potentially causing serious damage.

How does the rear fog lamp work?

The rear fog lamp indicator lights up when the rear fog light is on. The rear fog light goes out when you switch off the engine. After restarting the engine, you must press the rear fog light switch again to turn it back on.

What does the handbrake warning light (P) mean?

If a bulb for the dipped headlights, stop lights, or rear lights has blown.

It also incorporates the oil pressure warning light.

When the ignition is switched on, the two right-hand lamps in the pictogram will light up. They remain on until you depress the brake pedal. If the lights do not go out when the brake pedal is depressed, one of the brake light bulbs has failed.

What should I do if the SRS warning light flashes or stays on?

This indicates a fault in the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS), also known as the airbag system. The light should normally light up for a few seconds when the ignition is turned to start or drive, then extinguish. If it flashes or stays on, the fault might result in the SRS not activating in a collision. The system should be checked without delay by an authorized Saab garage.

How should I interpret the tachometer (rev counter)?

The tachometer shows engine speed in thousands of revs per minute (r/min). For maximum fuel economy, keep the needle within the green zone. The needle may briefly enter the broken red zone but must never be allowed to enter the solid red zone. A safety fuel shut-off prevents the engine speed from exceeding approximately 6,000 r/min.

How should I interpret the pressure gauge (2.3 Turbo models only)?

This gauge indicates the pressure in the intake manifold.

White zone: Engine lightly loaded or during engine braking (negative pressure/vacuum).

Orange zone: Higher engine speeds/load, turbocharger is boosting pressure.

Red zone: Under normal conditions, a safety cut-out system limits pressure to protect the engine, so the needle shouldn’t enter this zone. Under certain atmospheric conditions, it might briefly enter the red zone without indicating a malfunction. However, if the needle repeatedly enters the red zone and you experience a loss of engine power (due to the safety cut-out activating), take the car to an authorized Saab workshop without delay.

How should I interpret the temperature gauge, and what should I do if it goes into the red?

The temperature gauge shows the engine coolant temperature. The needle should normally be in the middle of the scale.

If the needle approaches the red section (especially in high ambient temperatures or under high engine load), select the highest possible gear to reduce engine speed and avoid changing down.

If the pointer moves into the red section despite these measures, stop the car and let the engine idle.

If the needle repeatedly enters the red zone, stop immediately and check the coolant level. On Turbo models, the message “CHECK RADIATOR LEVEL” will appear on the trip computer display if the coolant level in the expansion tank is too low.

How do I set the clock?

The clock, located to the right of the main instrument display panel, can be set using the knob in the middle of the dial.

Can I add additional electrical wiring to the car?

Consult your Saab dealer before adding any additional wiring, as this could cause damage to Electronic Control Units in the car.

What information does the EDU trip computer provide?

The EDU (Electronic Display Unit) provides:

Average fuel consumption.

Current fuel consumption (displayed as a bar graph on manual cars).

Range (distance to empty) based on fuel level and average consumption.

Outside temperature (with Ice warning).

Battery voltage.

How do I operate the EDU trip computer?

Use the two control buttons (R and INFO) located below the clock. The information is shown on the electronic display below the speedometer. Press the INFO button repeatedly until the desired information is displayed in the left-hand part of the display.

How does the EDU Ice Warning work?

If the outside temperature is between +3°C and -3°C when the ignition is switched on, the outside temperature will automatically be displayed instead of the battery voltage. It will continue to show the temperature until another function is selected via the INFO button or the temperature rises above +6°C or drops below -6°C. Note that there may be ice on the road even if the temperature is above +3°C, especially on bridges and in shady areas.

How does the EDU battery voltage display work?

The battery voltage is always displayed after the ignition key is turned to the drive position. When starting the engine, the display shows the lowest voltage recorded during the start. Once the car is running, the computer reverts to the last function selected. Observing the voltage drop during starting can help assess the battery’s condition.

What do the warnings on the EDU trip computer display mean?

The following warnings appear automatically in the right-hand part of the display:

CHECK ENGINE: Indicates a fault in the fuel injection or ignition system. The car can still be driven, but performance may be somewhat diminished. Have the system checked without delay.

CHECK RADIATOR LEVEL: Appears if the coolant level in the expansion tank is too low (Turbo models only).

PRND321: On automatic transmission cars, indicates the selected gear lever position with an orange bar.

When switching on the ignition, all warnings should briefly appear and then go off one by one within about four seconds.

How do I change the measurement units on the EDU trip computer?

Press and hold the INFO and R buttons simultaneously for at least four seconds. Each time the buttons are pressed and held, the system cycles through one of the following unit groups:

litres/100 km, kilometres, °C

MPG (US gal), miles, °F

MPG (imp. gal.), miles, °F

MPG (imp.gal.), miles, °C

How do I reset the average fuel consumption and range on the EDU?

Press and hold the R button for at least four seconds. The display will show “—” to indicate it has been reset. Calculation of average fuel consumption restarts from 10 litres/100 km. The display resets automatically after 1,342 litres of fuel have been used or 6,512 miles (10,480 km) have been driven.

How do I switch the EDU display on or off?

To switch off the display, press the R and INFO buttons simultaneously and release within four seconds. The display will switch on again if either button is pressed, the ignition is switched on/off, or if a check function warning is initiated.

What does ‘ERR’ mean on the EDU display?

‘ERR’ indicates that a trip computer sensor has developed a fault. It appears briefly on the left side of the display immediately after ignition switch-on and will reappear if the function with the defective sensor is selected. Have the fault rectified by an authorized Saab workshop.

Main settings:

Defroster (Windscreen symbol): Maximum flow to windscreen and side windows.

Floor (Arrow down symbol): Maximum flow to floor.

Panel (Person symbol): Maximum flow through panel vents.

All vents closed (Circle symbol).

Intermediate positions distribute air between these main settings (e.g., between floor and defroster, or floor and panel).

How do I adjust the dashboard panel vents?

Use the joysticks on the vents to direct the airflow (up/down, left/right). Use the knobs on the vents to adjust the amount of air admitted through each vent individually.

How do I operate the heated rear window and door mirrors?

The switch (symbol: window with wavy arrows) is incorporated in the climate control unit. When switched on, an indicator light on the instrument panel shows. The heating switches off automatically after 10-15 minutes. Switch it off manually as soon as the window/mirrors are clear of ice/mist. Do not switch on before the engine is running. Avoid placing sharp/hard objects on the rear parcel shelf to prevent damage to heater wires. The door mirrors are heated simultaneously with the rear window.

How do I get maximum heating quickly in very cold weather (manual system)?

1. When starting the engine cold, set fan speed to position 2 and air distribution (DISTR) to the defroster position (windscreen symbol).

2. As soon as the temperature gauge starts to move, increase fan speed to position 3.

3. Once the windscreen is clear, move the DISTR control one step to the left (towards floor/defroster mix).

Note: Heating up takes longer at low engine speeds. Avoid using fan position 4 for heating; it’s designed for maximum cooling in hot weather.

What are typical settings for the manual climate control system?

Based on the diagrams:

Winter – Defroster: Fan 2, Temp max hot, Distr to windscreen.

Winter – Cloudy: Fan 2, Temp towards hot, Distr to floor/defrost mix.

Summer – Sunny: Fan 2 or 3, Temp towards cool, Distr to panel.

What temperature settings can I use with the Automatic Climate Control (ACC)?

The selectable range is 17-27°C (63-80°F). Ideally, make changes in steps of 1°C.

The normal comfortable range is typically 19-23°C (66-73°F), depending on personal preference and clothing.

There are also two special settings:

HI: Maximum heat and maximum fan speed.

LO: Maximum cooling and maximum fan speed.

Note: The displayed temperature is not the actual cabin air temperature but a target value for perceived comfort, considering factors like humidity, sun load, etc.

Where are the ACC sensors located, and should I take any precautions?

The system has four sensors:

Ambient air temperature sensor (signal from EDU trip computer).

Inside air sensor (located below the clock).

Sun sensor (situated on top of the dashboard, midway between defroster vents).

Blended air temperature sensor (in the heater unit).

Take care not to obstruct the sun sensor on the dashboard, as this can prevent the ACC system from functioning properly.

How does the ACC system operate when starting in cold weather?

Initially, the system will automatically select rear-window/mirror heating, the defroster setting, maximum heat, and low fan speed. Air may briefly be directed to floor vents under certain conditions. Once the supply air is warm enough, it will be distributed through the floor vents, and fan speed will increase. As the cabin approaches the selected temperature, fan speed and heat supply will gradually reduce.

How does the ACC system operate when starting in warm weather?

Initially, the system directs fresh air through the panel vents at high fan speed and switches on the A/C compressor (unless ECON is selected). Air may briefly be directed to floor vents under certain conditions. Recirculation is selected after about one minute if the ambient temperature is above 27°C. As the cabin approaches the selected temperature, fan speed reduces automatically.

How do I set the desired temperature on the ACC?

1. Switch on the ignition.

2. Use the appropriate temperature buttons (up/down arrows) to select the desired temperature shown on the display.

3. Use the sliding control (C/F) below the display panel to choose Celsius or Fahrenheit.

The selected temperature is stored and will be retained even when the ignition is off. The system will automatically aim for this temperature the next time you start the car.

What does the AUTO button do on the ACC?

When AUTO is selected, the system automatically controls temperature, air distribution, fan speed, rear window/mirror heating, and air recirculation to reach and maintain the set temperature. Air conditioning (A/C) is automatically engaged if the outside temperature is above +5°C. Pressing AUTO cancels any manually selected functions (like specific air distribution or fan speed). However, programmed manual selections (see ACC programming) will be selected at the next engine start.

What does the ECON button do on the ACC?

When ECON (Economy) mode is activated, the A/C unit (compressor) will not operate. Temperature, air distribution, fan speed, and heating functions will still be controlled automatically.

How do I switch the ACC system OFF?

Can I manually control the heated rear window/mirrors with ACC?

Yes. Although controlled automatically in AUTO mode, you can press the button (window with wavy arrows) to manually switch the heating on or off. The function will still switch off automatically after 10 or 11 minutes. It can be turned off manually at any time.

Can I manually control the rear door demister fans with ACC?

Yes. Although controlled automatically (running at the same speed as the main fan), you can press the button (rear door vents symbol) to switch the demister fans off manually.

Can I manually control air recirculation with ACC?

Yes. Although controlled automatically, you can press the button (car with recirculating arrow symbol) to manually select or cancel air recirculation. Air recirculation does not significantly change air quality.

How do I manually adjust the fan speed with ACC?

Press and hold the fan speed buttons (up/down arrows with fan symbol). Keep the button depressed until the desired speed is obtained (stepless variation). Adjusting from minimum to maximum takes about eight seconds. The LEDs next to the buttons indicate the mode:

Middle LED only: Fan speed controlled automatically (AUTO mode).

Top LED(s) lit: Fan speed increased manually.

Bottom LED(s) lit: Fan speed reduced manually.

How do I select Defrost mode manually with ACC?

Press the Defroster button (windscreen with wavy arrows). This provides demisting of all windows through higher fan speed, maximum airflow from defroster vents and rear door vents, and operation of the heated rear window. Recirculation is turned off if previously selected. The mode remains active until another mode is selected. The heated rear window switches off after about 10 minutes. To return to the previously selected setting, press the defroster button again.

How do I manually select air distribution with ACC?

Press the appropriate button to direct airflow:

Defroster/Floor (Windscreen & down arrow symbol): Air to defroster and front/rear floor vents; small amount to panel vents.

Floor (Down arrow symbol): Maximum flow to all floor vents; small amount to defroster vents.

Floor/Panel (Down arrow & person symbol): Air to panel vents and front/rear floor vents; small amount to defroster vents.

Panel (Person symbol): Air only to panel vents; small amount to defroster vents.

How can I program the ACC system to remember manual settings?

You can save manually selected functions (e.g., specific air distribution, fan speed) so they are automatically selected each time the ignition is switched on.

1. Select the desired functions manually.

2. Press and release the AUTO and OFF buttons simultaneously.

Confirmation: The ACC display and LEDs will dim briefly and return to full strength.

2. Adjust the volume to the desired preset level using the volume knob.

3. Press any other button or wait 5 seconds to lock the volume at the new level.

Are there safety concerns when using mobile phones or communication radios in the car?

Yes. Radios used without separate outside aerials radiate an electromagnetic field inside the cabin. This can be dangerous to health and can cause interference with the car’s electrical system.

Saab recommends always attaching your telephone/communications radio to an external aerial. This also improves transmission/reception and range.

For traffic safety, always stop in a suitable place when calling.

What should I consider when fitting a mobile phone or communications radio?

Mobile telephones and radios not part of Saab’s standard equipment can interfere with the car’s electronics system and cause spurious warnings.

Always contact an authorized Saab workshop for fitting instructions.

If you suspect an unclear fault warning/indication after fitting equipment, contact an authorized Saab workshop for checks.

How do I adjust the manual front seats?

Recommended adjustment order: Height, Legroom, Backrest Rake Angle, then Steering Wheel position.

Legroom: Lift the bar under the front of the seat and slide the seat forward or backward. Release the bar and ensure the seat is locked.

Thigh Support (Front edge height, some models): Lift the lever at the front side of the cushion to raise the front edge.

Backrest Rake Angle: Turn the wheel located on the inboard side of the seat.

Lumbar Support (Driver’s seat): Turn the knob on the outboard side of the backrest (1 Harder, 2 Softer).

Head Restraint: See separate question.

How do I adjust the head restraints?

For best protection, the head restraint should be level with the occupant’s head.

To raise: Grip it on either side and pull it straight up to one of the preset positions.

To lower: Press the top straight down.

Warning: Test the head restraint thoroughly to ensure it provides good support to help prevent whiplash injuries in a collision.

What are the safety warnings for seat adjustment?

The car must be stationary during adjustment of the driver’s seat.

After adjusting legroom manually, check that the seat is securely locked in position to prevent it moving while the car is in motion.

When the car is being driven, the backrest should be in an upright position for optimal protection from the seat belt, airbag, and backrest during braking or collision.

How do I operate the electrically adjustable front seats and memory function?

Use the controls on the side of the seat base:

How can I adjust the electric seats if there is an electrical fault?

A special winder is included in the tool kit for manual legroom adjustment. From underneath the back of the seat, insert the winder into the electric motor (the one on the right-hand side, nearest the back of the seat). Turn the crank clockwise to move the seat rearwards and counter-clockwise to move it forward.

How do I operate the electrically heated seats?

Use the switches located on the centre console or fascia. Each front seat has its own switch. The heat output for the seat cushion and backrest can be adjusted in three steps:

Position 3: Maximum heat output.

Position 2: Medium heat output.

Position 1: Low heat output.

Position 0: Heating switched off.

Heating operates only when the ignition switch is in the drive position.

How do I adjust the steering wheel position?

Turn the locking handle located under the steering column to release the mechanism.

Move the steering wheel fore-and-aft (towards or away from you) to the required position.

Lock the steering wheel by turning the handle back firmly.

What are the important safety rules for using seat belts?

Wear seat belts low across the front of the pelvis, not across the abdominal area.

Adjust belts as firmly as possible, consistent with comfort. Slack belts reduce protection.

Avoid contaminating webbing with polishes, oils, chemicals, especially battery acid. Clean with mild soap and water.

Replace belts if webbing is frayed, contaminated, or damaged.

Replace the entire belt assembly after it has been worn in a severe impact, even if damage is not obvious.

Ensure belts are not worn with straps twisted.

Only one person per belt assembly. Never put a belt around a child on an occupant’s lap.

Do not modify or add anything that prevents belt adjustment devices from removing slack or prevents the assembly from being adjusted.

All occupants, including rear-seat passengers, should always wear seat belts.

How do I fasten the seat belts?

Pull the strap gently out of the inertia reel.

Insert the metal tongue into the buckle.

Make sure the tongue is properly secured (listen for a click).

Warning: The diagonal strap must never be placed behind the body or pulled off the shoulder to run under the arm.

What are seat belt pretensioners?

The front seat belts are equipped with automatic belt pretensioners. These activate in a severe head-on collision (but not lighter impacts, rear-end, or side collisions, or rollovers) to rapidly tighten the belt and restrict forward movement of the wearer. Warning: Seat belts, pretensioners, and related parts must be inspected after every collision by an authorized Saab garage.

How do I adjust the seat belt height (shoulder anchor)?

The height of the belt guide on the door pillar is adjustable. Squeeze the sliding piece as indicated by the arrows and move it up or down to the desired position. Ensure it is securely locked. The diagonal strap should run across the body somewhat below the neck, well in on the shoulder but not too close to the neck, for maximum protection. Ensure the belt is not twisted.

How do I adjust the lap belt for the middle rear seat?

This is a lap-belt type and needs manual adjustment.

To lengthen: Hold the adjuster at right angles to the strap and pull the strap out.

After fastening: Tighten the belt by pulling the free end until the belt fits snugly against the body.

To release: Press the red button on the buckle marked PRESS.

How should pregnant women wear seat belts?

Expectant mothers should position the belt so it does not apply pressure to the abdomen. The hip strap should be worn as low as possible across the hips.

What is the Airbag (SRS) system?

SRS stands for Supplementary Restraint System. It consists of an airbag incorporated in the steering wheel for the driver, and sometimes an airbag on the front passenger’s side. It is fitted as a complement to the seat belts, providing additional safety in the event of a collision. An SRS warning lamp indicates system status.

When do the airbags deploy?

The airbags inflate in the event of a severe frontal collision. They will not activate in minor head-on collisions, rear-end collisions, side collisions, or if the car rolls over.

What are the important safety warnings regarding airbags?

Even with airbags, seat belts must be worn by all occupants.

Airbags inflate and deflate extremely rapidly; they offer no protection in a second collision immediately following the first.

Adopt a proper driving position with your back against the seat backrest, not hunched over the wheel, to avoid injury if the airbag activates.

Never attach objects to the steering wheel pad or dashboard airbag cover.

Do not drive with objects (like a pipe) in your mouth.

The gas filling the airbag is very hot and may cause burns on the arms as it empties.

If the SRS warning lamp flashes or stays on, the system may be faulty and might not activate in a collision. Have it checked immediately by an authorized Saab garage.

For cars with a passenger airbag: Child seats should always be fitted to the rear seat. Children younger than 13 or shorter than 140 cm should occupy the back seat. Children should not stand in front of the passenger seat. Do not place objects on the dash or in front of the passenger seat. Ensure no accessories are mounted on the instrument panel near the airbag.

Can the passenger airbag be disconnected?

Yes. If you want to have the passenger airbag disconnected, always take the car to an authorized Saab garage.

What are the general warnings and service procedures for the SRS system?

No modifications affecting the steering wheel or electrical system should be made to cars with SRS.

Both battery cables and the SRS electronic unit must be disconnected before any welding work. Wait at least 20 minutes after disconnecting before starting work.

The electronic unit must be removed before quick-drying after painting.

Airbags and seat-belt pretensioners must be activated before scrapping the car or removing system components.

Airbags and pretensioners that have activated in a collision must be replaced.

All work involving replacement or scrapping of airbags or pretensioners must be carried out by an authorized Saab garage.

Check the system according to the Service Programme.

Do I need to use a seatbelt in cars equipped with an airbag?

Yes. The airbag is only a compliment to the car’s ordinary safety system (seatbelts). Airbags only activate in heavy front-on collisions and offer no protection in minor collisions, side-on collisions, rear-end collisions, or rollovers. Seatbelts prevent occupants being thrown against each other and help position you correctly for the airbag deployment.

Does the airbag deployment make a loud noise?

The detonation makes a short, loud noise. Most people who experience it remember the noise of the collision rather than the detonation itself.

Can I use a child seat in the front passenger seat if the car has an airbag there?

No. The airbag inflates with such power and speed that the child seat would be thrown violently backwards, potentially causing serious injury to the child.

Is the dust/smoke released during airbag deployment dangerous?

Most people experience only slight eye or throat irritation. People with asthma may have an attack and should follow their doctor’s advice, seeking medical attention if needed. Avoid getting the dust on the skin as it may cause irritation. Wash skin that comes into contact with water and mild soap. If eyes are irritated, rinse with water. The dust may contain traces of detergent-like substances.

What should I do if the SRS warning lamp comes on?

The system’s diagnostic function has detected a fault. Drive to an authorized Saab garage as soon as possible, as the system might not function correctly in a collision.

What are the general recommendations for child safety in the car?

Children should always be restrained in some way when travelling.

The type of restraint (safety seat, harness, booster cushion) must be adapted to the child’s size.

Consult your Saab dealer for advice and approved child safety seats.

Familiarize yourself with laws and regulations regarding fitting child seats and how children should be seated.

If using a non-Saab seat, ensure it can be fitted correctly according to its manufacturer’s instructions.

Where are the anchorage lugs for child seats located?

For child seats requiring underneath anchorage straps, there are four securing lugs under the front passenger seat to provide the best possible mounting.

Note: Mounting lugs at the front are NOT fitted in cars equipped with an airbag on the passenger’s side.

What are the warnings regarding child seats and airbags/front seats?

In cars equipped with an airbag on the front passenger’s side, NO child seat of any type should be fitted to the passenger seat due to risk of injury from the airbag.

Child seats fitted to the front passenger seat in cars NOT equipped with a passenger airbag must NOT be secured to the legroom adjustment control, as seat movement in an accident could affect the anchorage.

Where and how should a rearward-facing child seat be installed?

For approved rearward-facing seats, the recommended position is the centre seating position in the rear. Secure the child seat using the two rear mounting lugs located under the driver’s and front-seat passenger’s seats.

What precautions should be observed regarding fuses and the electrical system?

To avoid the risk of fire and/or short circuits in the car’s electrical system, the following should be observed:

Before modifying or connecting any electrical equipment, contact your Saab garage as incorrect installation may cause damage or short circuits/fire in the car’s electrical system.

Never fit a fuse of higher amperage than the one that has blown.

If the same fuse blows repeatedly, take the car to a garage and have its electrical system checked.

Where are the fuses located?

The fuses are housed on three power distribution panels:

One inside the glove compartment.

One at the front of the engine bay.

One (for the ABS system) at the back of the engine bay.

In cars equipped with an airbag on the passenger side the main fuse box is located in the lower part of the instrument panel.

How do I remove and replace a fuse?

A list of the fuses showing the components and circuits they protect is included in the ‘Technical Data’ section.

A special tool (together with spare fuses) for removing fuses is provided in the glove compartment. Push the tool onto the fuse and withdraw it.

If the wire in the fuse is broken, the fuse has blown. When replacing a fuse, make sure that a fuse of the correct rating (amperage) is used. The fuses are colour coded according to amperage and the rating is also marked on each fuse.

What do the tyre designations mean?

As an example, the designation 195/65 R 15 87H on a tyre means:

195 width of the tyre in mm

65 profile ratio between the height and width of the tyre, in per cent

R radial ply

15 wheel diameter: 15 inches

87 load code

H the tyre is approved for speeds up to a maximum of 130 mph (210 km/h)

Other speed rating codes:

Q tyre approved for 160 km/h max.

T tyre approved for 190 km/h max.

V tyre approved for 240 km/h max.

W tyre approved for 270 km/h max.

Z tyre approved for speeds above 240 km/h

How should I check and maintain tyre pressures?

The tyre pressures should be checked regularly. Inflate the tyres to the recommended pressures for the load to be carried and the normal cruising speed of the car (see the tyre pressure table in the Technical Data Section). The recommended pressures apply to cold tyres. Never reduce the pressure when the tyres are warm. If warm tyres are being checked, only increase the pressure. Tyres that are incorrectly inflated will wear much more quickly and also greatly reduce the roadholding capabilities of the car.

A leaking tyre valve can readily be changed. Simply unscrew the defective valve and screw in a new one.

N.B. Always remember to adjust the tyre pressures if the usual load or cruising speed is to be altered substantially.

How can I tell when my tyres need replacing?

The tyres incorporate wear indicators in the form of smooth, treadless strips running across the width, which become visible when only 1.6 mm of the tread remains. As soon as the wear indicator becomes visible, the tyre should be replaced.

Make sure that you are familiar with national regulations on tread depth and what types of winter tyres are permitted.

Should I rotate my tyres (switching wheels)?

Due to front-wheel drive, the front tyres become worn faster than the rear ones. When replacing existing tyres with new ones, this should at least be done in pairs, so that the tyres on each axle are the same condition. When fitting one new pair of tyres, these should be fitted to the rear as the handling of the car (e.g. when braking/skidding) is better when the least worn tyres are at the rear. Do not switch sides when the existing rear wheels are moved forwards.

What safety precautions should I take when changing a wheel?

The jack is for emergency wheel changing and snow chain attachment only and not for regular maintenance repairs. For other work the car should be supported on axle stands.

Never crawl under the car when it is supported by the jack alone.

Take particular care when using the jack if the car is on a hill or cambered road surface. NOTE: use chocks as an extra safety precaution.

Place the chocks in front of and behind the wheel diagonally opposite the one to be changed.

Switch on the hazard flashers when wheel changing at the roadside.

Apply the handbrake and engage 1st gear or reverse on cars with a manual gearbox, or select position P on cars with automatic transmission.

Never jack up the car with people inside.

Never start the engine when the car is jacked up.

Make sure that the jack is positioned on firm and level ground.

Stow the jack correctly in the place provided for it under the panel in the floor of the luggage compartment. Do not leave it loose in the luggage compartment as it could injure the car occupants in the event of a collision.

The jack supplied should be used only with your Saab car.

Where are the spare wheel and tools stored?

The spare wheel, warning triangle and jack with crank are stored beneath a panel in the luggage compartment floor. The raised panel can be hooked open by means of the rubber strap attached to the parcel shelf bracket on the right-hand side. The car tool kit is secured to a panel in the side trim on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment.

How do I jack up the car?

To jack up the car, insert the jack in one of the jacking points underneath the sills (two on either side). Apply the handbrake. Insert the jack. Wind the jack down and check that the flange at the top of the jack fits snugly against the sill and that the entire foot is in contact with the ground. Do not apply the jack to the rear axle.

If a trolley jack is used, this must be applied either to the reinforced subframe for the engine or under the reinforced member adjacent to the rear tow-rope eye.

How do I change a wheel?

1. Apply the handbrake. Insert the jack. Wind the jack down and check that the flange at the top of the jack fits snugly against the sill and that the entire foot is in contact with the ground.

2. Remove the hub cap by carefully prising it off with a screwdriver. Note that the wheel wrench can be used to release the clamp for the spare wheel. Slacken the wheel studs half a turn.

3. Wind the jack up until the wheel is clear of the ground. Undo the wheel studs and remove the wheel.

4. Fit the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts, making sure that wheel and bolts are correctly positioned.

5. Lower the car. Tighten the wheel studs in the sequence shown using the wheel wrench included in the car tool kit. Tightening torque: 120 Nm. Never overtighten the studs by using a percussion nut tightener as it may not be possible to undo them using the car wheel wrench. Note: when refitting the wheel cover after changing a wheel, make sure that the air valve fits in the wheel cover’s aperture.

6. Retighten the studs after 20-50 miles. Tightening torque: 120 Nm.

How should I use the compact spare wheel?

The compact spare wheel (115/70 R16) is designed for ease of handling at the roadside when a wheel needs to be changed because of a puncture. The wheel should only be used in an emergency and, with the spare wheel fitted, the car should not be driven further than 2100 miles (3500 km).

WARNING: Do not exceed a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) as this may cause overheating of the tyre and deterioration of the road behaviour.

The tyre pressure on the spare wheel should be 4.2 bar.

Place the wheel that has been removed inside the plastic bag provided.

Change back to the ordinary wheel as soon as possible.

What are flat spots on tyres?

All tyres become hot when driving, especially on long journeys or during hard driving. When the car is parked after this type of driving and the tyres cool, they may get a so-called flat spot. This means that the surface of the tyre against the ground becomes somewhat flattened which can lead to steering wheel vibration similar to tyre imbalance. The flat spot disappears when the tyres warm up again after 20-25 km driving at out-of-town speeds.

What precautions should be taken with the Air Conditioning (A/C) system?

IMPORTANT:

All repair and adjustment work on the A/C system must be carried out by an authorized Saab garage having the necessary personnel and equipment for such work.

Special tools and a special purging procedure are required for R134a refrigerant.

Never mix R134a and R12 refrigerants.

WARNING:

The A/C system is pressurized. Do not loosen or remove any connections in the A/C system.

Escaping gas could cause blindness or other injury.

How can I troubleshoot the Air Conditioning (A/C) system if cooling is inadequate?

If a malfunction should occur in the air conditioning system, you can carry out the following checks yourself. If the fault persists, take the car to an authorized Saab workshop.

IMPORTANT: When the air-conditioning system is running, condensate will form on the evaporator. When the car is parked, this condensate may drip off and form a small pool of water under the car.

Inadequate cooling capacity checks:

a. Check that the condenser (fitted forward of the radiator and intercooler) has not become clogged by dirt and insects.

b. Check that the compressor drive belt is not slipping.

c. Check the fuses for the fans and compressor.

What maintenance is required for the Air Conditioning (A/C) system?

The car should be taken to an authorized Saab workshop once a year for servicing of the air conditioning system.

Check the compressor drive belt at every regular service.

The condenser and radiator must be kept clear of insects and other dirt. When washing the car, use the hose to spray the radiator and condenser to flush away any dirt and foreign bodies, spraying through the grille at the front of the car and from inside the engine compartment. Do not use high-pressure water. Do not use a hose when the engine is hot.

Never place a fine-mesh net or any other form of screening in front of the radiator as this will drastically reduce its cooling capacity.

What should I know about seat belt safety and maintenance?

WARNING:

Seat belts and belt pretensioners that have been exposed to severe loads such as those occurring in a collision must always be changed, regardless of whether or not they are visibly damaged.

Never carry out any belt repairs yourself or attempt to modify the function of the belts.

Maintenance Checks:

Check periodically that the seat belts are working properly. A sharp tug on the strap should cause the inertia reel to lock. Check the floor anchorage points to ensure that they have not been weakened by corrosion. If the belt is worn or has any fraying edges, it should be replaced.

The belts must not come into contact with substances such as polishes, oil or chemicals. If the straps get dirty, wash them with soap and warm water or have them replaced.

How should I clean the upholstery and trim?

To remove fluff or hairs from the seat upholstery or headlining, use a moist, lint-free cloth or a special fluff-removing roller. Remove any dirty marks using a cloth moistened with lukewarm soapy water.

When using a stain remover to remove dirty marks, always work from the outside towards the centre to avoid leaving a ring. However, if a dirty ring or a spot of dirt should remain, this can usually be removed using warm soapy water or water alone.

Wet patches caused by spilt soft drink or thin oil must be wiped off immediately using an absorbent material, such as kitchen paper. Then treat the patch with stain remover.

White spirit is recommended for removing grease or oil stains. Plastic trim may be washed with warm water and a synthetic detergent. A semi-stiff brush may also be used.

How should I clean and care for leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery should be treated principally to enhance the elegant appearance, but also to protect the surface.

The leather upholstery should be cleaned and reconditioned when the car is inspected in the spring and autumn (twice a year).

Moisten a soft cloth in a mild soap solution. Carefully apply this damp (not wet) cloth to the leather with light, circular movements until the leather is clean. Repeat this procedure using clean water. Let the leather dry completely.

Then apply Saab Leather Cleaner – a leather conditioner which can be purchased from authorized Saab dealers. Apply the leather conditioner with the same circular movements as described above. Use a soft cloth. Let the leather conditioner dry and polish the leather with a soft, dry cloth.

Follow the instructions given above. Do not use hot water, unknown abrasive polishes, solvents, sprays or soaps that may scratch the leather. This treatment will keep the leather upholstery clean and attractive for many years.

How should I clean the textile carpeting?

The textile carpet should be vacuum cleaned regularly. The carpet may also be cleaned using a brush or carpet shampoo applied with a sponge. Before using a vacuum cleaner, make sure that it is properly earthed.

How should I clean the engine compartment?

Clean inside the engine bay using an engine detergent and rinse with hot water. Cover the headlights and avoid spraying the radiator, throttle cable and other engine controls, the generator, ignition system and other electrical component, particularly if high-pressure equipment is used.

If using a high-pressure hose, the nozzle should be directed at 90° to the surface being washed. This is especially important where there are labels.

Do not use petrol as a cleaning agent or solvent when carrying out repairs or maintenance work. An environment-friendly degreasant is more suitable.

How should I wash the car?

Wash the car frequently. When the car is new, wash the body by hand using cold water and a brush attachment on the end of a hose. During the first five or six months, before the paintwork has hardened properly, avoid automatic car washes. Thereafter use a car shampoo added to lukewarm water.

Bird droppings should be washed off as soon as possible because they may cause discoloration which is difficult to remove by polishing.

Use a cloth moistened in white spirit to remove spots of asphalt or tar. Avoid using strong cleaning agents as these may dry out the paintwork. Do not use solvents to clean the front and rear light clusters as these are liable to cause crack formation in the lenses.

The underbody also needs washing regularly, and this should be done extra thoroughly at the end of winter. Clean the underbody thoroughly by hand if the car is usually washed in an automatic car wash without special facilities for underbody cleaning.

Never wash or allow the car to dry in the sun but wipe it dry with a leather immediately after washing to avoid smears and streaks.

Clean the window glass inside and out using a proprietary window cleaner. This is particularly important when the car is new, as the upholstery and trim may have a slight tendency to sweat at first.

IMPORTANT:

Check that the brakes are in proper working order after the car has been washed. Wet brake discs will give poorer braking performance.

Lower the electric aerials by switching off the radio before entering an automatic car wash.

Clean the aerial about once a month with a clean, dry cloth. NOTE: do not use oil or any silicone-based cleaning agent.

Fixed aerials must be removed.

When and how should I polish or wax the car?

A new car should not be waxed before three or four months. The bodywork will not need polishing before the paint has oxidized and become dull. Abrasive polishes containing a cutting agent should only be used in exceptional cases on a new car. Before waxing or polishing, make sure that the paintwork has been thoroughly cleaned.

How should I touch-up damaged paintwork?

Damaged paintwork should be treated as soon as it is discovered. The sooner it is treated the less will be the risk of corrosion starting.

Damage from a collision is usually extensive and should be restored by professionals.

You can deal with chips from stones and minor scratches yourself. Tools like brushes, touch-up paint, and primer are available from your Saab dealer.

Minor flaws (metal not exposed): Touch-up paint can usually be applied directly after any dirt has been scraped away with a knife-point.

Exposed metal/corrosion: Scrape off all surface rust using a knife-point. If possible, scrape the entire damaged area to bare metal. Prime the metal with two thin coats of primer applied with a brush. Apply the top coat in several thin layers until the surface is level with the surrounding paintwork. Stir primer and touch-up paint thoroughly before use. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.

Two-coat paint: Thoroughly clean the area. Apply the primer (two or three coats for best finish), then the base paint, and finally the clear varnish. Allow each coat to dry.

How should I maintain the anti-corrosion treatment?

The anti-corrosion treatment on the underside and inside wheel arches is exposed to wear and damage. Dirt and salt can initiate corrosion.

Make a habit of hosing down the underbody and checking the anti-corrosion treatment. You are responsible for maintaining it normally, including touching-up any damage, even while under warranty.

After the underbody has been hosed clean and allowed to dry, apply viscous anti-corrosion oil to any worn or damaged areas, using a spray applicator or paintbrush.

Maintain the treatment even after the warranty expires for long-term protection.

Keep seams in the body and doors clean. At the first sign of corrosion, treat the affected area with a thin anti-corrosion oil using a spray applicator or brush. Consult your Saab workshop if necessary.

What should I check before motoring abroad?

Before setting off on a long journey it is advisable to have your car checked over at an authorized Saab garage.

Obtain a few important items to take along: spare bulbs, wiper blades, fuses, a multigroove drive-belt, etc.

Check these points yourself beforehand:

Make sure that the engine is in good condition.

Check that no oil or petrol leaks out of the engine and gearbox.

Inspect the multigroove drive-belt and change it if it shows signs of hard wear.

Check the condition of the battery and its charge.

Inspect the tread pattern and check the inflation pressures of the tyres, not forgetting the spare.

Make sure that the maximum permitted speed for the vehicle’s tyres is not exceeded in countries with no speed limit. For speed rating, see section headed “Wheels and tyres”.

Check the brakes.

Check all bulbs.

Check the tool kit.

Make sure there is a warning triangle in the car and that you are familiar with the law concerning its use in the countries you will be visiting.

What adjustments are needed when driving abroad?

When driving from a country with left-hand traffic to a country with right-hand traffic or vice versa, cover over with black tape that part of the headlamps giving an asymmetric dipped beam. Otherwise you will dazzle oncoming traffic.

Consult your Saab garage if you intend to drive in countries where unleaded petrol or petrol with a sufficiently high octane rating is not available. The garage must then make certain adjustments to the engine.

Where is the chassis number plate located?

The chassis number plate is located in the engine compartment.

What are important points when driving the Saab 9000 Turbo?

Starting and driving:

Never accelerate at full throttle before the temperature gauge is normal (N). If the pressure gauge needle repeatedly enters the red zone, loss of power may occur due to safety cut-out. If this happens, take the car to a Saab workshop.

Under certain atmospheric conditions, the needle may briefly enter the broken red zone; this is normal.

A safety cut-out (fuel shut-off) prevents engine speed exceeding approx. 6,000 r/min.

Stopping the engine:

Do not rev the engine immediately before switching off. Switch off only when idling to ensure the turbo compressor has adequate oil pressure.

Automatic Performance Control (APC):

System optimized for 95 octane RON fuel, but can run on minimum 91 RON.

Adjusts turbo boost to suit fuel’s knocking tendency. Brief knocking under heavy load (~3000 r/min) is normal.

Isolated knocking is more likely with low-octane fuel; this controlled knocking indicates the APC is working normally.

If constant knocking occurs under load, it indicates a system malfunction; take the car to a Saab workshop.

What considerations apply to cars with a catalytic converter?

IMPORTANT: Use only unleaded petrol. Leaded petrol damages the catalyst and oxygen sensor.

Always keep the car properly serviced (especially fuel/ignition systems).

Be alert to misfiring, loss of power, or reduced performance. Reduce speed and go to a Saab workshop immediately if problems occur.

If bump starting (manuals only) or jump starting, ensure engine runs on all cylinders immediately after starting. If not, idle for max 5 mins. If still misfiring, contact Saab workshop.

Do not park on dry grass or other combustible material due to fire risk from the hot converter.

NEVER drive off if the engine is misfiring.

If bump starting a warm engine, it must run on all cylinders immediately. Do not attempt repeat bump starts if it fails.

How should I run in the engine and new brake pads?

Engine Running-in:

Avoid driving too hard initially to allow parts to bed in.

During the first 1200 miles (2000 km), do not exceed 5000 r/min.

During the first 1800 miles (3000 km), never drive at full throttle other than momentarily.

New Brake Pads Running-in:

The period is around 90 miles (150 km) city driving or 300 miles (500 km) highway motoring.

Avoid hard braking during this period to extend service life.

How do I refuel the car?

Ensure you use the right grade of fuel (Recommended 95 RON unleaded, min 91 RON; Turbo 225hp: Recommended 98 RON, min 91 RON).

The fuel filler cap is on the rear right wing.

Insert the fuel pump nozzle past the flange in the filler pipe, resting its first position marking against the flange. Do not lift the nozzle while filling.

IMPORTANT: Do not fill fuel all the way up the filler pipe. Petrol needs room for expansion. Fuel tank capacity: 66 litres.

Screw the filler cap back on until you hear a click.

Keep the tank fairly full to avoid condensation, especially in cold weather. Add methylated spirits/denatured alcohol occasionally in cold weather if needed.

WARNING: Petrol is highly flammable. Never use near naked flames. Never smoke when filling.

How do I operate the manual transmission?

Gear positions are marked on the lever.

To engage reverse, lift the release ring under the gear knob.

Fully depress the clutch pedal when changing gear, then release smoothly.

Avoid resting your hand on the gear lever while driving.

When changing from 5th to 4th, do not press the lever sideways to avoid accidentally engaging 2nd gear.

Engage reverse only when the car is stationary and your foot is off the accelerator. Move lever firmly right in neutral before engaging reverse.

Recommended upshift speeds for fuel economy:

1-2: 15 mph (25 km/h)

2-3: 25 mph (40 km/h)

3-4: 40 mph (65 km/h)

4-5: 45 mph (75 km/h)

How do I operate the automatic transmission?

WARNING: Always keep your foot on the brake when selecting a drive position to prevent rolling. Do not select P, R, or N while moving, especially at high speed.

An illuminated dial shows gear positions: P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive), 3 (1st-3rd), 2 (1st-2nd), 1 (1st only).

Engine should be idling and car stationary when moving selector lever.

Avoid resting hand on selector lever while driving.

IMPORTANT: Wait a few seconds after selecting a gear before accelerating.

The selector lever has interlocks; press the button on the lever to move between certain positions (D->3, N->R, R->P, P->R, 3->2).

P (Park): Select only when stationary. Transmission blocked. Engine can be started.

R (Reverse): Select only when stationary. Press button.

N (Neutral): Engine not connected. Engine can be started. Apply handbrake on incline. Select N if stationary for long periods (traffic jam). Do not shift to N at high speeds.

D (Drive): For ordinary driving. Starts in 1st, shifts automatically 1-4.

3: Max gear is 3rd. For winding roads, dense traffic. Shifts down to 3rd if selected from D (causing overrun braking). Do not select above 80 mph (130 km/h).

2: Max gear is 2nd. For mountain driving (engine braking). Shifts between 1st and 2nd. Downshift from 3rd occurs only at pre-programmed speed.

1: Max gear is 1st. For very steep hills (max engine braking). Avoids upshifts. Downshift from D occurs sequentially based on speed. Do not select above 80 mph (130 km/h). Not advisable on icy roads.

Kick-down: Press accelerator fully to floor. Transmission shifts down one gear for best acceleration.

How do I use the cruise control system?

WARNING: Do not use on wet/slippery roads, dense traffic, or winding roads. Set switch to OFF if not in use.

Switch Positions: OFF, TIP (temporary decrease), ON, RES/- (resume/decrease), SET/+ (set/increase).

Indicator: CRUISE light illuminates in instrument panel when ON.

To select speed: Set switch to ON. Accelerate to desired speed (min 25 mph / 40 km/h). Press SET/+.

To increase speed: Accelerate and press SET/+. Or, press and hold SET/+ (increases in 1.6 km/h steps).

Temporary increase: Accelerate manually. System reverts to set speed when accelerator released.

Reduction in speed: Move switch to TIP (smoother reduction). Or, press and hold RES/- button (reduces in 1.6 km/h steps).

Resume speed: Briefly hold switch in RES/- position.

Disengaging system: Depress brake or clutch pedal; move switch to TIP; move switch to OFF; switch off engine.

What are important considerations for braking?

Use engine braking (low gear) on long descents to avoid overheating brakes.

In high-speed motoring, brake firmly over shorter periods rather than lightly over long stretches.

WARNING:

Try brakes periodically, especially after driving through snow, slush, puddles, or fords, as wet brakes have reduced efficiency.

Power assistance works only when engine is running. Much more pedal pressure is needed if engine is off (e.g., towing).

After driving in heavy rain, deep puddles, or washing the car, brakes will be wet. Dry them by braking lightly until full efficiency returns. Also do this in extremely damp weather.

Avoid using light alloy wheels in winter as brake components are more exposed to corrosive slush.

How does the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) work and how should I use it?

WARNING: ABS cannot counteract laws of nature. Do not use its safety margin to increase speed.

To achieve the shortest stopping distance and best handling on various surfaces, the brake pedal should always be fully depressed.

ABS automatically regulates pressure to each wheel, reducing it just before lock-up and increasing it again, up to 12 times per second.

ABS does not necessarily reduce stopping distance on gravel or snow/ice, but retains steering capacity as wheels don’t lock.

When ABS operates, a pumping/ticking is felt in the pedal. Keep pedal fully depressed and steer.

Never release the pedal until the car is stationary or danger has passed.

On slippery surfaces, ABS activates even with light pedal pressure. Test brakes gently to gauge road surface quality.

How can I drive more economically?

Drive smoothly and gently, keep car serviced regularly.

Avoid hard acceleration and racing the engine. Change gear up at recommended speeds.

Frequent gear changing (town driving), short trips with a cold engine, driving with roof rack/trailer, and running on studded tyres all increase fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption is affected by driving conditions/style, weather, road standard, car condition, and speed.

During running-in (3000-4000 miles / 5000-7000 km), fuel consumption may be higher than normal.

Refer to Weather conditions, Driving technique, and Road conditions sections for more details on minimizing fuel use.

What should I know about driving in winter weather?

Check wiper blades aren’t frozen to glass.

Brush snow from heating system air intake.

Apply lubricant (molybdenum disulphide oil) to door locks. If frozen, heat key or use de-icer (do not force key).

Add fuel additives occasionally to prevent condensation freezing in tank. Keep tank full.

Ensure brakes and tyres are in good condition.

Special winter tyres are recommended for snow/ice. Fit the same type to all four wheels.

If using snow chains (recommended with winter tyres on auto trans), do not exceed 30 mph (50 km/h). Inspect links regularly. Chains may affect road behaviour. Do not use on rear wheels.

Skid Control: If front wheels skid, disengage transmission (clutch) and steer where you want to go. Avoid brakes. If rear wheels skid, steer into the skid.

What should I know about driving in hot weather?

Always check coolant level before starting a journey.

Drive in as high a gear as possible, even uphill. Avoid kick-down position in automatics.

At the end of the journey, let engine idle for 2-3 minutes.

If temperature gauge enters red zone:

1. Stop the car. Turn ACC off (if fitted), leave engine running. Do not remove expansion tank cap.

2. If temperature continues to rise while idling, switch off engine.

3. Wait until gauge indicates normal temperature before turning off engine.

4. If coolant needs topping up, carefully unscrew expansion tank cap and add equal parts water/Saab anti-freeze.

5. Have car inspected by authorized Saab garage.

What do I need to know about towing a trailer or caravan?

Towing Attachment: Use a genuine Saab attachment (max load 1800 kg). Electrical socket is under floor trim near left rear light cluster. Consult dealer for suitable attachment. Bumper reinforcement brackets should be fitted for maximum strength.

IMPORTANT: Other attachments could damage electrical system. Consult dealer for fitting electrical connections.

Headlights: Adjust beam-length switch (see page 15).

Trailer Weight/Gradients: Refer to illustration for max weights vs gradients. Be aware of legal limits (speed, weight, braking, licenses). WARNING: Do not tow if 15%+ gradients likely (loss of traction).

Attachment Load (Nose Weight): Distribute load over trailer wheels, keep low. Nose weight should be 50-75 kg (110-160 lb). This counts towards car’s total load capacity; boot load may need reducing.

Driving: Allow for altered handling and reduced braking. Select first gear (auto trans) on steep hills. Improve engine cooling on steep uphills by setting heater to max, fan high, or disconnecting A/C.

Detachable Towing Attachment: Ensure coupling stud/ball are greased. Follow fitting/removal instructions exactly. Check indicator pin (B) position after fitting.

What precautions should I take when driving with a roof rack?

Maximum permitted load is 100 kg (220 lb). Roof rack load is part of car’s total carrying capacity.

Mountings must be robust. Load must be securely lashed.

Use a roof rack designed specially for the car (available from Saab dealer).

Do not exceed 70 mph (110 km/h) when carrying long and/or heavy loads on the roof.

Is it safe to drive with the luggage compartment door open?

Avoid driving with the luggage compartment door open whenever possible, as exhaust fumes can be drawn into the car.

If unavoidable, close all windows and set heating/ventilation to maximum ventilation on the highest defroster setting.

How should I tow the car?

Use the towrope attachment eyes at the front and rear. Some models have a detachable eye stored in the spare wheel well; screw firmly into place in the spoiler.

Drive carefully, keep tow rope taut (towed driver brakes carefully).

WARNINGS:

Never tow a car heavier than the towing car.

Never allow anyone in the towed car.

Power brake/steering assistance is inoperative when engine is off; much harder effort required.

Call for professional assistance for breakdown towing if required.

For detachable front eye: Ensure it’s properly secured. Use only for towing on a road. Not designed for towing wrecked cars.

Automatic Transmission Towing:

a. Selector lever in N.

b. Add 2 extra litres of Dexron II ATF.

c. Observe national speed limits (max legal typically 30 mph / 50 km/h). Max distance 25-30 miles (40-50 km). For longer distance, raise front wheels.

d. Check fluid level before driving again.

e. Engine cannot be started by towing/pushing (use jump leads).

WARNING: Do not remove key from ignition (activates steering lock).

IMPORTANT: Ensure handbrake is off if front wheels are raised.

How do I check the engine oil level?

Check regularly. Ensure car is on level ground and engine has cooled for 2-5 minutes.

Remove dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, remove again and check level.

Level must be between MIN and MAX marks. Do not overfill (not higher than max mark).

Distance between MIN and MAX is approx. 1 litre (1.75 imp. pints).

Top up if necessary with recommended grade oil through dipstick tube. Do not add oil if level is above midway between marks.

Screw dipstick down tightly after checking.

When should the engine oil be changed more frequently?

More frequent oil changes (e.g., every 10,000 km) may be necessary if the car is driven in any of the following cases:

frequent and lengthy periods with the engine idling

repeated stop-go driving

short distances in cold weather when the engine has no time to reach normal operating temperature.

How do I change the engine oil?

Ensure the engine is warm.

Unscrew the drain plug in the bottom of the sump.

Let the oil drain into a suitable receptacle for at least ten minutes.

Keep hands away from the hot oil.

WARNING: Lengthy/repeated skin contact with engine oil can be harmful. Avoid contact and wash off thoroughly. Do not touch hot turbo/manifold. Do not spill oil on hot engine parts (fire risk).

How do I check the automatic transmission fluid level?

Check regularly:

1. Park on a level surface, apply handbrake. Transmission must be at operating temperature (around +80°C / +176°F).

2. Set selector lever to P or N, let engine idle.

3. Wipe dipstick with a lint-free cloth.

4. Reinsert dipstick fully, remove and check level. Fluid should be between upper MIN/MAX marks at operating temp. Use prescribed fluid type (see Technical Data).

5. Distance between marks is ~0.5 litres. Add fluid via dipstick tube if needed. If checked when cold (below 0°C / 32°F), level may be in lower section of upper MIN/MAX scale.

How do I check and change the coolant?

Checking Level: Expansion tank is transparent. Level should be between MAX and MIN marks. Top up with equal parts water and Saab anti-freeze. N.B.: Mix coolant/water first before adding.

WARNING: Take care opening bonnet if boiling. Never open filler cap when hot. System is pressurized; open cap carefully to release pressure.

Changing Coolant (Normally done during service):

1. If engine hot, open filler cap carefully to release pressure. Do not remove cap yet.

2. Place receptacle under radiator, unscrew drain plug.

3. Remove filler cap.

4. After draining (~2 mins), tighten drain plug (finger-tight only).

5. Mix Saab-approved anti-freeze/water to required strength.

6. Slowly fill expansion tank. Allow air to escape (~ couple of minutes).

7. Screw filler cap on, warm up engine. Check level is between MAX/MIN.

8. Check level again after a few days, top up if necessary.

How do I check the brake and clutch fluid?

The combined reservoir is transparent.

Level should be between MAX and MIN marks.

Top up as necessary with recommended grade fluid (DOT 4).

Use only fluid from a closed container. Check for leaks.

Brake fluid absorbs water/vapour over time; change at specified intervals.

This work should be done by an authorized Saab workshop.

How are brake pads checked and changed?

Footbrake and handbrake have automatic adjustment, so wear cannot be detected by pedal/lever travel.

It is vital that lining thickness is checked regularly per the service programme.

Changing brake pads and adjusting the handbrake cable must be carried out by an authorized workshop using genuine Saab brake pads.

How do I check the power steering fluid level?

Check regularly per service programme.

Reservoir has graduations: HOT, COLD, ADD.

If engine is at normal running temp, level should be between HOT and COLD marks.

If engine is cold, level should be between COLD and ADD marks.

Use “Saab Power Steering Fluid 4634”.

Never start engine with reservoir cap off (fluid might gush out).

What precautions should be taken when working near the battery?

The battery gives off explosive hydrogen gas. Always avoid sparks or naked flames nearby.

Battery contains corrosive sulphuric acid. Always wear face mask/protective goggles.

If acid contacts eyes, skin, clothes, wash immediately with plenty of water. Call doctor if acid gets in eyes or large amount on skin.

How do I check the battery charge?

Check charge at regular intervals, more frequently in winter.

Check voltage drop on starting engine (see Trip computer, page 10). Basic guide: should not drop below ~11V at +20°C (68°F) or ~10V at -10°C (14°F).

Can also check using a hydrometer; specific gravity should be 1.28.

The car battery is sealed-for-life and normally requires no maintenance.

How do I boost start the car using jump leads?

To avoid arcing/flashover, connect correctly.

IMPORTANT: Never reverse battery polarity. Disconnecting leads while engine runs may damage alternator.

1. Switch off ignition and all power consumers (lights, heater etc.) in both cars.

2. Switch off engine in the donor car.

3. Connect positive (+) lead from donor battery (+) terminal to flat battery (+) terminal.

4. Connect negative (-) lead from donor battery (-) terminal to engine lifting eyebolt (or similar earth point) on faulty car, furthest from battery.

WARNING: Do not connect negative lead to faulty battery (-) terminal (spark could ignite explosive gas).

5. Start donor car engine.

6. Start engine in faulty car. Let run for a while.

7. Disconnect jump leads in the reverse order.

What should I know about the alternator and drive belt?

Alternator is on the left of engine, driven by multi-groove belt from crankshaft.

WARNING: Ensure loose garments don’t get caught in drive belt when engine is running.

Belt tension is maintained by an automatic tensioner. Correct tension is very important.

How should I maintain the wipers and washers?

Regularly check and clean all wiper blades. Use Saab washer fluid for cleaning.

If wiper not functioning properly, clean window with Saab washer fluid (esp. after wax car wash).

Change blades if wipe quality is poor or they show signs of wear.

Washer reservoir holds 4 litres. Low level light comes on at ~0.8 litres (~0.1L for rear). Top up with at least 50% “Saab Washer Fluid” and water.

Washer nozzles are adjustable; insert pin and swivel.

Rear window nozzle is on right in high-level brake light.
