What do the WARNING and NOTE indicators mean in the manual?

WARNING! Indicates the possibility of personal injury or death if you do not follow the instructions in the warning.

NOTE Indicates the potential for damage to your Saab if you do not follow the directions in the caution.


What should I do if the temperature gauge needle repeatedly approaches the red zone?

If the needle repeatedly approaches the red zone, stop the car immediately and check the coolant level.


What safety warning applies to the radiator or coolant expansion tank cap?

WARNING! Do not remove the radiator cap or the coolant expansion tank cap when the engine is hot. They contain hot fluid which is under pressure. Failure to heed this warning may result in personal injury. Refer to page 72 for further instructions and warnings.


Can I operate the engine at full throttle before it’s warm?

NOTE: Do not operate the engine at full throttle until the needle on the temperature gauge has entered the green zone. Possible engine damage could occur if full throttle is used before the engine coolant is sufficiently warm.


How do I reset the trip meter?

The reset button for the trip meter is located in the lower section of the meter. Push to reset.


What does the pressure gauge (Turbo) indicate?

The pressure gauge indicates the charging pressure in the inlet manifold. At low engine loads and during engine deceleration, a vacuum will be present (needle in white zone). At increased loads or engine speeds, the turbo compressor increases charging pressure (needle moves into orange zone). Normally, the pressure won’t be high enough to enter the red zone due to the wastegate. Under full load with high octane fuel, it might briefly enter the red zone. An overpressure safety switch protects the engine.


When should the needle on the tachometer enter the red zone?

The needle should only be allowed to enter the broken red zone for brief periods. It must never enter the solid red zone. A safety device limits engine speed to approximately 6000 rpm. Driving within the green range aids fuel economy.


What does the high beam indicator light mean?

This light will glow when the headlights are switched to high beam.


What should I do if the BRAKE FLUID and ANTI LOCK warning lights are illuminated at the same time?

WARNING! If the BRAKE FLUID and ANTI LOCK warning lights are illuminated at the same time, the car must not be driven. After several pedal applications, the brake pedal effort will increase unexpectedly and the braking effect will be greatly reduced. Note, however, that the operation of the handbrake will be unaffected. Failure to heed this warning may result in inadequate braking and possibly personal injury.


What should I do if the BRAKE FLUID warning light illuminates?

If the light comes on, stop the car at the nearest safe opportunity and check the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir. If the BRAKE FLUID warning light remains on after replenishing the fluid, the car should not be driven and should be checked and corrected immediately by an authorized Saab dealer.

NOTE: The fluid level gradually lowers as the brake pads wear. Blinking of the light may indicate that the pads are due for replacement.


What does the ANTI LOCK warning light indicate?

The ANTI LOCK warning light will illuminate when a problem or fault occurs in the anti-lock braking system. When the ANTI LOCK warning light illuminates and the BRAKE FLUID warning light does not, the anti-lock braking system will deactivate and the vehicle will revert to a standard braking system without the benefit of the anti-lock features. The anti-lock brake system should be checked and any problems corrected immediately by an authorized Saab dealer.


What does the handbrake indicator light mean?

This light will glow when the handbrake is applied.


What should I do if the charge warning light comes on while driving?

If the light comes on while you are driving, stop at the earliest safe opportunity, switch off the engine and check the condition of the alternator drive belt. A loose or missing belt can affect engine cooling and the charging system.


What does the electric rear window defroster indicator light mean?

This light will glow when the rear window defroster is switched on. The light will automatically extinguish after approximately 10 minutes to prevent unnecessary temperature loading of the rear glass. The light also indicates heated mirror operation.


What does the Shift indicator light mean (U.S. models)?

This light is fitted to cars with manual transmission. The light tells you when you can get better fuel economy by shifting to a higher gear.


What should I do if the ‘Check engine’ light illuminates?

This light indicates an electrical malfunction in the fuel injection system, an emission control system fault, or (in naturally-aspirated cars) a fault in the ignition system. In case of a serious malfunction, a backup system allows the car to continue with somewhat diminished performance. Should the light illuminate and stay on, have the problem checked by your Saab dealer as soon as possible.


What should I do if the engine oil pressure warning light comes on or blinks while driving?

If the light blinks or comes on while you are driving, stop the car immediately, switch off the engine and check the oil level. If the oil light stays on, do not drive the vehicle under any circumstances, even if the oil level is correct, as severe engine damage can result.


What does the low fuel warning light indicate?

This lamp will glow continuously when the quantity of gasoline in the fuel tank is less than approximately 2.5-3.1 U.S. gallons (10-12 liters). Refuel at your next opportunity. If the tank runs dry, at least 1.5 gallons (6 liters) must be added to start the engine on level ground (up to 3 gallons or 11 liters may be needed on a slope).


What does the CRUISE indicator light mean?

This light indicates that the cruise control switch is in the ON position. If the RESUME portion is depressed while the light is on, the car may revert to a previously set speed. Under normal driving conditions, keep the switch in the OFF position.


What does a blinking or steady SRS warning light indicate?

A blinking or steady glow indicates a fault in the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). The system should be checked and corrected immediately by a Saab dealer. When the light remains on, the SRS (driver’s side airbag) may not be activated in an accident. The light illuminates briefly when the ignition is turned to start or drive.


What happens to the SRS warning light in a severe collision?

In the event of a collision severe enough to deploy the SRS, the SRS warning light will flash for 5 seconds and then remain lit.


How do I operate the headlight switch?

The headlight switch has three positions:

D (Off symbol): The lighting is off.

EDGE (Parking light symbol): Parking lights on.

ED (Headlight symbol): Headlights and parking lights on.

WARNING! Many jurisdictions require you to turn on your headlights at dusk or during inclement weather. Failure to do so could result in violation of local traffic ordinances and limit your visibility to other drivers.


How do Daytime Running Lights operate on equipped vehicles?

On cars equipped with optional Daytime Running Lights (standard in Canada), the headlight switch positions provide the following combinations when the ignition is on:

D (Off symbol): Daytime running lights on.

EDGE (Parking light symbol): Daytime running lights on.

ED (Headlight symbol): Headlights and parking lights on.

Daytime Running Lights are essentially identical to regular low beams but cannot be switched to constant high beam (the flash function remains). Your dealer can activate this feature via an extra-cost relay if desired.


How do I operate the fog lights (if equipped)?

The fog lights are located under the front bumper. The switch is below the headlight switch.

1. Rotate the headlight switch to either the parking light or headlight position.

2. Push in the fog light switch. The fog lights will not illuminate if high beams are on.

3. To turn off, push and release the fog light switch again, or rotate the headlamp switch to the off position.

Keep the protective covers on when not in use. Use is subject to local laws. Amber lenses are available.


What precautions should be taken when driving in fog or low visibility?

WARNING! In fog or driving conditions with limited visibility, reduce speed, turn on low beam headlights and fog lights (if equipped) and refrain from following the tail lights of vehicles in front of you. Following the taillights in front of you can lead to an accident causing personal injury.


What care should be taken when parking near curbs or snow banks with fog lights?

NOTE: Use care when parking close to curbs or snow banks. Contact with the fog lights will damage them.


How do I activate the hazard warning lights?

Push the switch (triangle symbol). All direction indicator lights will flash simultaneously. Use if the car constitutes a danger or obstruction. The switch flashes red when in use.


How do I use the headlight dimmer, high beam flasher, and turn signals?

The control lever is located on the side of the steering column.

High Beam/Low Beam: Move the spring-loaded lever towards the steering wheel to switch between high and low beams. A blue indicator light glows when high beams are on.

High Beam Flash: Move the lever towards the steering wheel when headlights are off for a warning flash.

Turn Signals: Move the lever up for a right turn or down for a left turn. “Lane change” detents are provided.

Use care when operating the turn signal switch if the CRUISE light is illuminated, as it could inadvertently activate the RESUME function.


How is the instrument panel lighting controlled?

The instrument panel lighting is switched on and off with the headlight switch. Separate dimmer controls adjust the brightness of the instrument lighting and control lighting.


How does the interior illumination work?

Interior illumination comprises three lights: above the front seats, behind the rear view mirror, and beside the ignition switch. Certain models have a time delay shut-off, keeping lights on for about 15 seconds after doors close or until the ignition key is turned on.


How does the interior illumination work on Convertible models?

On Convertible models, the overhead light is replaced by two side reading lights in the rear speaker panels. The switch on the console between the front seats has three positions:

Forward: Lighting on continuously.

Middle: Lighting off.

Rear: Lighting comes on when a door is opened.


What should I do with interior lights when parking?

Be certain that the interior lights are switched off when parking the car.


What are the positions for the windshield wiper and washer control lever?

The control lever has the following positions:

0: Off position.

1: Intermittent operation (sweep at intervals of a few seconds).

2: Low speed.

3: High speed.

4 (Pull towards steering wheel): Windshield washer.

Check wiper blades periodically and replace when worn.


How do I operate the windshield washer?

Pull the control lever towards the steering wheel (position 4). The washer pump operates as long as the lever is held. If pulled from the “wipers-off” (0) position, the washer pump and wipers activate. Wipers will automatically sweep a few times after the lever is released.


How do the headlight washers and wipers operate?

The headlight washers and wipers operate in conjunction with the windshield washers. Whenever the windshield washer stalk switch is pulled towards the driver, both the windshield and headlight washers will function.


How do I operate the electrically heated rear window and rear view mirrors?

Push the switch (symbol: window with wavy arrows) near the center of the instrument panel. An indicator light glows when heating is on. Pushing the switch a second time turns off the defrosters. The system automatically turns off after approximately 10 minutes or when the ignition is switched off. Do not switch on before starting the engine.


What precautions should be taken with the rear window defroster?

NOTE: Damage to the rear window may result if the defroster is operated for a long period when the window is dry.

NOTE: Do not use abrasive cleansers on the inside of the rear window, as this may damage the grid’s electrical continuity.

NOTE: Avoid placing hard or sharp objects on the rear window shelf, as the heating wires may be easily damaged.


How is the driver’s seat heater controlled?

The temperature regulation of the driver’s seat heater (on 900S, Turbo models) is controlled or switched off by the rheostat located below the headlight switch. It has three heat output settings (0, 1, 2, 3).


How does the passenger’s seat heater work?

The passenger’s seat backrest and cushion have thermostat-controlled electric heating elements that warm up automatically when the ignition is switched on. The thermostat ensures heaters switch off when the temperature exceeds 82°F (28°C).


How does the ventilation system work?

Air enters at the right hood louver, passes through the A/C evaporator, and (except for air to the center vent) through the heater core. It exits at the rear quarter panel grilles or behind the rear bumper. Controls are in the center instrument panel. Panel vents are adjustable and have individual shut-off thumb wheels (0 = Off).


Where are the air vents located?

1. Defroster vents (at windshield base)

2. Side vents (at ends of dashboard)

3. Central panel vents (center of dashboard – unheated air only)

4. Floor vents


How does the heater fan switch operate?

The heater fan has four speeds. Speeds one, two, and three are controlled by the fan switch (knob 1). Speed four (maximum) is used automatically when the air distribution selector (knob 3) is moved to the “Max Vent” position. The fan can be completely shut off by selecting “0” on the distribution selector.


How does the temperature control work?

The temperature control (knob 2) regulates the amount of heat added by controlling the flow of heated engine coolant through the heater core. Turning the knob clockwise increases temperature. The 6 o’clock position (blue spot) turns off coolant flow for unheated air.


How does the air distribution selector work?

The rotary switch (knob 3) controls incoming air distribution. Clockwise from 6 o’clock, positions are: “Off” (fresh air restricted, fan off), Max Vent (fan on speed 4), Panel Vent, Floor Vent, Floor, Bi-Level, and Defrost.


How should the air conditioner be maintained during winter?

Run the air conditioner for a few minutes occasionally during the winter to ensure proper compressor seal lubrication.


What warning applies to the A/C system?

WARNING! The A/C system contains freon gas under pressure. Do not loosen or undo the A/C system hoses. Escaping gas may cause blindness or injury.


How do I operate the A/C On/Off switch?

Push the switch (snowflake symbol) in to engage the A/C compressor. The compressor will not switch on below 38°F (3°C). Push a second time to turn the compressor off. Compressor start is delayed briefly after engine start to avoid extra load.


What is the purpose of the Recirculation switch?

Pushing the recirculation switch (car symbol with curved arrow) closes the fresh air intake and opens a flap to recirculate air inside the car. Use this for maximum cooling or to avoid drawing in exhaust fumes in slow traffic.


When should the recirculation feature not be used?

WARNING! Do not use recirculation in cold weather as this may cause ice or mist to form on the windshield and side windows.


How can I defog the windows quickly?

Switch on the A/C compressor and turn up the temperature control. Ensure the recirculation switch is off.


How can I defrost the windshield effectively?

Turn the temperature control fully clockwise (max heat) and the air distribution control to the twelve o’clock (Defrost) position. Increase fan speed as the air warms up.


How can I get heat plus fresh air on a long drive?

To fight drowsiness on a long winter drive, select the nine o’clock position (Bi-Level) on the air distribution control and adjust the center panel vent to direct cool air towards the face.


How can I achieve maximum cooling with the A/C?

Engage both the A/C and recirculation switches. Select the seven o’clock position (Panel Vent) on the air distribution control. Turn the temperature control fully counter clockwise to the blue spot.


How can I maintain comfort on moderate days using the climate control?

Set the temperature control fully counter clockwise (blue spot). As comfort level is reached, switch air distribution to eight o’clock (Floor), disengage recirculation, and adjust fan speed. To add heat to outer vents, turn the temperature control part way clockwise. Direct fully cold air from the center vent toward the rear or close it using its thumb wheel switch.


How do I adjust the manual front seats?

Legroom: Lift the bar under the front edge of the seat, slide the seat, release the bar, and ensure it’s locked.

Vertical Height (Driver’s seat): Pull the telescopic lever forward and raise or lower the lever to adjust height.

Backrest Angle: Turn the wheel at the side of the seat base.

Fold Backrest Forward (2/3-door): Release the backrest by raising the lever at the side and fold forward.

Head Restraint: Raise or lower to be level with the head.


What warnings apply to seat adjustments?

WARNING!

• Complete all seat adjustments before driving. Adjusting while driving may cause loss of control.

• Ensure the seat is securely latched after legroom adjustment. Failure to latch may allow unexpected movement, causing loss of control or contributing to injury in a collision.

• Keep the front seat backrest upright while driving for maximum protection from seat belts and back rests in a collision or sudden stop. Never fully recline while driving.


How do I adjust the electrically adjustable front seats?

Controls are located on the side of the seat base:

1 (Upper control): Adjusts backrest rake angle.

2 (Lower control): Adjusts legroom and individual height of the front (thigh support) and back of the seat cushion.

Head Restraint: Adjust manually (Raise/lower to be level with the head).

Fold Backrest Forward: Release using the lever and fold forward.


What warning applies when moving the backrest upright?

WARNING! To avoid the risk of injury, keep hands well clear of the locking mechanism on both sides at the base of the backrest when moving the backrest to the upright position.


How do I adjust the front seat head restraints?

Front head restraints adjust vertically about 3 1/2 inches (90 mm). To raise, grasp both sides and pull upwards. To lower, press down on the top center. Detents secure the desired height. Adjust the center approximately at ear level for best protection.


How do I remove the rear headrest cushions?

Removable rear headrest cushions (outboard positions) have a mounting post fitting into a bracket on the rear seat backrest. They must be pulled out when the seat is folded down.


How can I adjust the electric seat manually if there’s an electrical fault?

Use the special flexible crank from the tool kit. From underneath at the back of the seat, insert the crank into the electric motor on the right-hand side, nearest the seat back. Turn clockwise to move the seat rearward, counter-clockwise to move forward. Movement is very gradual.


How do I put on the manual lap and shoulder belts?

1. Grasp the belt near the shoulder guide loop.

2. Pull out enough belt to reach the latch buckle between the front seats.

3. Position the latch tongue (1) on the belt.

4. Ensure one section lies low over the hips and the other is well in on the shoulder (not too close to the neck).

5. Insert the latch tongue into the latch buckle (2).

6. Pull up on the upper portion of the belt to remove slack from the lap portion. The retractor adjusts the shoulder portion automatically.

7. To release, press the red button on the latch buckle. The retractor stores the belt.

WARNING! Seat belts, properly worn, reduce the risk of serious occupant injury.


How do I put on the front seat belt in Convertible models?

NOTE: On Convertible models, take hold of the seat belts close to the bottom anchor point and gently draw out sufficient belt to reach the latch mechanism.


How should the seat belt be positioned?

One section should lie low and snugly over the hips (not the waist). The other section should be well in on the outside shoulder, not too close to the neck, and never under the arm or around the neck over the inside shoulder.


What warnings apply to wearing seat belts?

WARNING!

• Use the shoulder belt portion on the outside shoulder only. Never wear it under the arm or around your neck over the inside shoulder.

• Ensure the lap portion is fitted snugly and low around the hips, not the waist.

• Remove heavy overcoats before fastening the belt.

• Failure to follow these precautions could increase the chance/severity of injury in an accident.


How should pregnant women wear the seat belt?

WARNING! Pregnant women should use the belt as described, paying special attention to applying the lap portion as low and snug over the hips as possible.


How does the seat belt reminder system work?

The reminder light (“FASTEN BELTS”) on the instrument panel glows for about 8 seconds after starting. An audible chime sounds until the light goes out or the driver’s seat belt is fastened, whichever occurs first. The vehicle can be started regardless of belt status.


How does the seat belt retractor and locking mechanism work?

When belts are in use, the inertia reel retractor is normally unlocked, allowing occupant movement. The locking mechanism activates automatically by rapid belt motion or sudden vehicle deceleration (like hard braking or climbing/descending steep grades).


What general warnings apply to the seat belt system?

WARNING!

1. No alterations or additions should be made to the belt system.

2. Webbing must not be bleached or redyed.

3. Each belt is for one person only. Outboard belts must be used as lap/shoulder restraints.

4. Fully reclining the front seat back increases the risk of sliding under the belt in a frontal collision.

5. If in doubt about restraints, consult your dealer.


What should be done with seat belts after a collision?

WARNING! All safety belt assemblies (including retractors and hardware) must be inspected after any collision. Saab recommends replacing all assemblies used during a collision unless it was minor and a qualified technician finds no damage and proper operation. Assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and replaced if damage or improper operation is noted.


How should infants or small children be protected in the vehicle?

WARNING! For maximum protection, always protect infants or small children with a suitable safety seat designed for them, conforming to applicable motor vehicle safety standards. Follow the seat manufacturer’s installation/use instructions and obey all warnings. Failure to do so could increase injury risk/severity in a collision or sudden stop. Do not hold an infant/child while the vehicle is in motion. Do not permit children to sit where they cannot be properly restrained.


What warnings apply to installing and using child safety restraint systems?

WARNING! All child safety restraint systems are designed for securing with vehicle lap belts or the lap portion of lap/shoulder belts. Seats in the front passenger seat must not attach to seat adjustment controls (especially the legroom bar). Using a restraint without properly securing it increases injury risk to the child in a collision/sudden stop, or could endanger other occupants if improperly installed.


Where does Saab recommend placing child safety seats?

Saab recommends using infant and child safety seats in rear seats rather than the front seat to reduce the chance or severity of personal injury in a collision or sudden stop.


How should a child seat designed only for a lap belt be installed?

Use the seat in the center rear seating position (except Convertible models). Make sure the correct latch is used.


When might a locking clip be needed for a child seat?

WARNING! Restraining the seat with a 3-point belt (lap/shoulder combination) may require a special locking clip (contact seat manufacturer) to restrict belt movement and prevent tipping. Refer to manufacturer’s instructions for necessity and availability.


How do I properly install a child seat?

Before placing the child in the seat, fasten and tighten the lap belt. Forcibly tilt the seat side-to-side and pull it forward to check if the lap belt holds securely. If belt slippage occurs, install the seat in a different position, repeating the check.


When can children use regular lap/shoulder belts?

For children too large for child safety seats (check seat instructions for max size), the center rear lap belt can be used. Lap/shoulder belts in other seats may be used if the lap portion fits snugly and low on the hips, AND the shoulder belt does not contact or rest in front of the face, chin, neck, or throat.


What warning applies to seating children in certain positions?

WARNING! Children should not be seated in the right front, left rear, or right rear seats unless they can be positioned so the shoulder strap does not contact or rest in front of the face, chin, neck or throat. Failure to follow this precaution can increase the chance or severity of injury in a collision or sudden stop.


How do I attach restraint tether anchorages on Canadian 3- and 4-door models?

One child tether anchorage kit is provided with Canadian vehicles.

1. Remove covering plugs from holes under the two cross-shaped cuts in the luggage compartment floor carpet.

2. Fasten anchor bolts with their shackles in the holes using specially designed spacers.

3. Bolt dimension: M8 x 25.


How do I attach restraint tether anchorages on Canadian Convertible models?

1. Raise the convertible top and lower the backlight.

2. From outside, locate zippers in the space between the back seat and backlight, below each headrest. Open the zipper.

3. Detach the headrest by unscrewing the wing screw. Remove headrest and retighten screw.

4. Attach the child restraint tether to the anchorage by fastening the anchor bolt (M8) in the hole. The package is in the trunk.


What warnings apply to child restraints in Convertibles?

WARNING!

• Do not lower the top with passengers in the rear seat area.

• When driving with the top lowered and a child restraint in the back seat, do not fit the cover panels.

• Child restraint anchorages are designed only for loads from correctly fitted child restraints. Do not use them for adult seat belts or harnesses.


What is the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS)?

All Saab 900 models have an SRS, identified by “SRS” on the steering wheel and an SRS indicator light. It includes an airbag in the steering wheel activated in severe front-end collisions (not minor front, rollover, side, or rear collisions). When activated, it inflates to provide improved driver protection in the initial impact. It’s most effective when the driver’s seat belt is fastened. Seat belts should always be worn by all occupants.


What should I do if the SRS warning light stays on or blinks?

WARNING! If the SRS warning light does not go off or stays on or blinks when driving, the vehicle should be checked and repaired at a Saab dealer immediately. When the light is on or blinking, the SRS may not be activated in a head-on collision.


How does the SRS airbag system technically work?

The SRS consists of a sensor system (two front sensors, one safety sensor in the electronic unit) that initiates airbag inflation when activated in a front-end collision. Activation occurs with a severe impact (at least 16 g) to the front end within a 60° arc. Inflation takes 20-30 milliseconds using inert, non-toxic gas. The bag deflates at a controlled rate after deployment. No attempts should be made to adjust, install a different type, or modify the steering wheel.

The electronic unit is self-diagnosing. Faults are indicated by the SRS symbol lighting up (blinking or steady). Faults should be checked immediately by a Saab dealer with special equipment.


Why is it important to use seat belts even with an SRS airbag?

Several reasons:

1. Proper positioning: Seat belts position the driver correctly during inflation.

2. Other impacts: Belts provide restraint in rollover, side, and rear impacts where SRS doesn’t deploy.

3. Less severe frontals: SRS only deploys in moderate to severe frontal collisions; belts reduce harm in less severe ones.

4. Ejection prevention: Belts reduce ejection risk and injury.

5. Multiple impacts: Belts provide restraint for more than one impact in multi-collision accidents, unlike the single-deployment airbag.


What should I do after an airbag deployment?

WARNING!

1. The airbag surface may contain sodium hydroxide deposits (a gas byproduct). Wash skin thoroughly with lukewarm water and mild soap as it’s irritating.

2. Activated airbags must be replaced only by an authorized dealer.


Can modifications be made to the steering wheel or airbag system?

WARNING! No modifications must be made to the steering wheel or padded airbag cover. Do not install fabric over the pad or attach badges/emblems. No modifications of any kind may be made to airbag wiring.


Who should work on or replace an airbag?

What precautions should be taken when servicing the fuel injection system or towing a disabled vehicle?

CAUTION: The multiport fuel injection system should be adjusted or serviced only with the proper tools and according to prescribed procedures and only by qualified persons skilled in Saab Fuel Injection servicing.

Fuel lines must never be cut or spliced and all connections must be properly torqued on reassembly.

Tampering with the multiport fuel injection system or Turbocharger (if equipped) may void warranty coverage of affected components.

When welding on the vehicle, disconnect the generator (alternator), the battery and the control module for the SRS if so equipped.

Avoid the plastic fuel tank and lines and all flammable materials.

How does the ignition and gear selector lock work?

The ignition key fits all locks. Keep the key number (on the plastic lug) safe.

NOTE: Dirt, food scraps or spilled liquids can damage the ignition switch/lock assembly on the center console.

Lock operation (4 positions: L, P, S, Start):

Lock (L): On manual cars, gear lever must be in reverse. On automatics, selector lever must be in Park (P). Turn key to L to withdraw. Ignition and gear selector are locked.

Park (P): All lights and radio can operate. Use P or L when engine isn’t running to avoid ignition coil damage.

Running (S): Entire electrical system, including ignition, is operative.

Starting (Start): Spring-loaded to return to S. If engine stalls, turn key back to P before restarting. Starter operates only in N or P (automatic).

WARNING! Always depress the clutch pedal on manual transmission vehicles before starting the car.


How do I start the engine?

General:

Do not run the starter motor for more than 15 seconds at a time. Wait 20-30 seconds between attempts.

Avoid racing the engine or heavy load when cold. Drive off once oil pressure light is out.

WARNING! Do not start or run the engine in a closed area due to carbon monoxide risk.

Starting Procedure:

1. Apply handbrake. Put gear lever in neutral (manual) or select P or N (automatic).

2. Depress the clutch pedal (manual).

3. Turn key to Start, release to S once engine starts. Idle for ~10 seconds before accelerating. Avoid full throttle for 2-3 minutes.

NOTE (16 valve engines): Hydraulic valve lifters require no maintenance. Some lifter noise for a few seconds after starting is normal.

Cold Weather Tips:

Manual: Release clutch pedal slowly after starting.

Automatic: Let engine idle stabilize before selecting gear.

If engine stalls and fails to restart: Depress accelerator fully while cranking to ventilate. Avoid repeated short cranking. Opening throttle slightly as engine runs may help. Winter grade oil (5W-30) improves cold starting.


What should I know about starting, driving, and stopping turbocharged engines?

1. Starting and driving:

• Never accelerate at full throttle before the temperature gauge is normal (N).

• If the pressure gauge needle repeatedly enters the red zone, power loss may occur due to the safety cut-out limiting pressure. See an authorized dealer. Brief entry into the broken red zone under certain conditions is normal.

• A safety cut-out prevents exceeding approx. 6000 rpm.

2. Stopping the engine:

• Do not rev the engine before switching off. Always switch off while idling to ensure turbo oil pressure.

3. Automatic Performance Control (APC):

• Designed for optimum performance with 93 octane (AON) fuel.

• Allows engine to run safely on lower octane fuel (min 87 AON), adjusting boost to suit knocking tendencies.

• Brief knocking under heavy load (~3000 rpm) is normal, especially with lower octane fuel.

• Constant knocking indicates a malfunction; see a dealer.


What is the break-in period for a new engine and new brake pads?

Break-in period (Engine):

Pistons, cylinder walls, and bearings need time to bed in. Avoid driving too hard initially.

First 1,200 miles (2,000 km): Do not exceed 5,000 rpm.

First 1,800 miles (3,000 km): Avoid full throttle except momentarily.

Break-in period for new brake pads:

Around 90 miles (150 km) of city driving or 300 miles (500 km) of highway motoring.

Avoid hard braking during this period to extend service life.


How do I operate the manual transmission gear selector?

Gear positions are shown on the knob. 5th is the highway gear for best economy.

To engage Reverse (R), first raise the collar on the gear lever.

NOTE: Reverse is not synchronized. Engage only when stopped, with clutch fully depressed and accelerator released. Apply handbrake after engaging reverse when parking.


How do I operate the automatic transmission gear selector?

Gear positions are shown on the console: P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive, 1-3 forward), 2 (1-2 forward), 1 (1 only forward).

Select positions only when idling and stationary. Depressing accelerator while shifting causes wear.

WARNING! Always apply the foot brake when moving the selector out of P or N. Pause briefly for gear to engage before accelerating.

Selecting Gears:

P (Park): Select when parked. Lever must be in P to remove ignition key. Locks transmission. Do not select while moving. Starter operates.

R (Reverse): Select only when stationary.

N (Neutral): No gear engaged. Starter operates. Apply handbrake if stopped on a slope.

D (Drive): Normal forward driving. Automatically selects best gear (1-3).

2: Automatic changing between 1st and 2nd. Top gear (3rd) not engaged. Moving from D to 2 gives engine braking. Engage only below 55 mph (85 km/h).

1: Maximum engine braking on steep downhills. Also for long, steep uphills to avoid repeated gear changes. Moving from D to 1 causes downshift to 2nd, then 1st around 37 mph (60 km/h). Do not move lever to 1 above 55 mph (85 km/h). Upshifts won’t occur in 1.

Moving off:

1. Move selector to desired position (usually D).

2. Release brake and accelerate.

Kick-down:

For maximum acceleration (overtaking), press accelerator hard to kick-down position.

Between 34-65 mph (65-100 km/h), kick-down causes immediate downshift to 2nd gear.

Transmission upshifts to 3rd when max engine speed for 2nd is reached or accelerator is released.


How should I change gears in a manual transmission?

Release the clutch pedal smoothly and carefully.

Proper clutch positions: Fully depressed or fully released. Slipping only needed when starting from rest.

Avoid driving with foot resting on the clutch pedal.

When stationary with engine running, leave lever in neutral and release clutch pedal.

Move lever gently but firmly with a slight pause in neutral during shifts.

A light on the instrument panel indicates excessive fuel consumption on warmed-up manual transmission vehicles.

It signals you to shift up to a higher gear.

A fade-in/fade-out switch and 1.5-second delay prevent annoying blinking.

It’s a recommendation; ignore it in certain traffic situations.

Make a habit of shifting up before or when the light goes on.


How does the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) work?

Prevents wheel lock regardless of road conditions.

When active (wheels about to lock), a slight pulsation is felt in the brake pedal, indicating the system is working and traction may be less than ideal.

For shortest braking distance and directional stability (dry, wet, or slippery), always depress the brake pedal as hard as possible (emergency stop). ABS automatically controls braking effort at each wheel.

WARNING! ABS reduces, but does not eliminate, loss of steering and braking control on slippery roads. Drive cautiously and adjust speed to conditions.

To avoid overheating brakes on long downhills, use engine braking by selecting a lower gear.

WARNING! Check brakes occasionally, especially after heavy splashing or driving through snow/slush, as braking effect may be temporarily reduced. Power assist only works with ignition on; much greater pedal force is needed without it.


What should I know about brake pad wear?

Wear depends on driving conditions, speed, terrain, load, and habits.

Saab pads are designed for best braking effort, life, and minimum noise.

Use only Saab recommended original asbestos-free brake pads for replacement.

Break-in new pads for ~90 miles (city) or 300 miles (highway), avoiding hard braking.


How should I park the car?

Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

Position front wheels towards curb on downhill grades; away from curb on uphill grades.

Engage reverse gear (manual) or latch selector in PARK (automatic).

Apply the hand brake (acts on rear wheels).

Remove the ignition key.

Safely exit and lock the vehicle.

WARNING! Extended idling (cold or warm) can cause misfiring. Do not leave idling vehicles unattended; turn off if misfiring occurs.

WARNING! Do not push-start or pull-start. Do not run starter for over one minute with a misfiring condition.

WARNING! Do not park, idle, or drive where dry grass or combustibles can contact the hot exhaust system.


How do I operate the cruise control?

The system is controlled by a sliding switch (OFF, TIP, ON, RESUME) on the turn signal lever and a SET SPEED button at the end.

The “ON” indicator light shows the system is active.

NOTE: A dealer-installed accessory system is available for non-equipped 900 models.

To select cruising speed:

Move switch to ON. Accelerate to desired speed (min 25 mph / 40 km/h). Press SET SPEED button.

To reduce cruising speed:

Touch brake pedal until desired speed is reached, then press SET SPEED.

To increase cruising speed:

Accelerate to new speed, press SET SPEED. Alternatively, hold SET SPEED button until desired speed is reached, then release.

Temporary acceleration (e.g., passing):

Depress accelerator normally. Car returns to set speed when accelerator is released.

Temporary deceleration:

System ceases function if brake or clutch pedal is depressed.

Smoother reduction: Move switch to TIP.

To resume constant cruising speed: Move switch momentarily to RESUME.

To disengage cruise control:

Automatically disengages when: brake/clutch pedal depressed, switch moved to OFF or TIP, engine switched off.

WARNING!

1. Do not use on winding, wet, slippery roads or in dense traffic.

2. Keep system OFF when not in use to prevent inadvertent engagement (e.g., signalling turn).

3. If gear lever unintentionally moved to neutral while cruise engaged, depress brake/clutch momentarily or move switch to OFF to prevent overrevving.

4. Always switch to OFF before turning engine off.


How can I drive more economically?

Drive moderately. Avoid unnecessary full throttle acceleration and high engine speeds.

Congested areas, roof racks, or trailers increase fuel consumption.

Excessive idling and “warming up” waste gas.

Use air conditioner only when necessary.

How can I prevent rust?

Preventive Maintenance:

1. Wash frequently, wax at least twice a year. Wash weekly in adverse conditions (dirt, sand, salt). Wash immediately after exposure to salted snow/slush or contaminants (acid rain, tree sap, bird droppings).

a. Rinse entire car (including underbody) first.

b. Sponge with quality car soap or mild detergent solution.

c. Rinse thoroughly.

d. Check/clear door and body panel drains.

e. Wipe dry (chamois preferred).

2. Clean underside during winter (high pressure water) at least mid-winter and spring.

3. Inspect frequently for leaks/damage, repair promptly. Check for leaks after washing/rain (lift floor mats). Dry wet areas. Repair paint damage immediately (touch-up for small scratches, professional repaint/prime for exposed metal). Repair major body damage immediately; ensure new/exposed panels undercoated.

4. Inspect undercoating, touch up if necessary. Pay attention to fenders/wheel housings. If worn/flaked, clean steel thoroughly (scraper/wire brush), wash with solvent, dry, apply fresh coat thinly.
