What are the key features of the ROLAND RT-MICS?
The ROLAND RT-MICS is a drum trigger with a built-in sound generator designed for “hybrid drumming,” which combines acoustic and electronic sounds.
• It can be easily and securely attached to snare drums with various hoop shapes (excluding wooden hoops).
• It has a built-in sound generator, allowing you to trigger electronic sounds by striking your drum.
• A microphone for the acoustic sound is also built-in, letting you mix the drum’s own acoustic sound with the electronic sound or output them separately.
• The factory settings include eight distinctive sounds.
• Using dedicated software, you can replace the built-in sounds with your own audio files (wave data), such as custom drum sounds, sound effects, or even entire songs.
How do I mount the ROLAND RT-MICS trigger on an acoustic drum?
1. While pressing the trigger firmly against the head of the drum, use the mounting screw to secure it as shown in the illustration.
• To allow the trigger to accurately detect the vibration of the head, mount it between two adjacent tension bolts.
• When you’re not using the trigger, remove it from your drum set.
• If a portion of the panel contacts the snare when it is attached, affix the snare protective rubber at the point of contact as shown in the illustration.
How do I connect the ROLAND RT-MICS to an amplifier or PA mixer?
To connect the ROLAND RT-MICS to your amp or PA mixer, use the output jacks on the side panel. You can insert one or more external effect units between the RT-MicS and your amp or mixer to process the sound further.
• The MIC OUTPUT jack outputs the acoustic sound of the drum itself (mic sound).
• The MIX/ELEC OUTPUT jack outputs either the electronic sound or a mix of the electronic and mic sounds, depending on the [MIX/ELEC] switch setting.
What is the basic procedure for using the ROLAND RT-MICS?
1. Long-press the [POWER] switch to turn the power on.
2. Use the [MIC VOLUME] dial and [ELECTRONIC VOLUME] dial to adjust the volume of the mic sound and the electronic sound. Turning the dial in the direction of the arrow increases the volume.
3. Use the [SENS] dial to adjust the sensitivity at which the electronic sound is triggered. Turning the dial in the direction of the arrow raises the sensitivity, so that the sound responds even to soft strikes. While striking the drum, adjust the dial to the ideal sensitivity.
4. Use the [Sound] button to select the electronic sound.
What are the functions of the jacks and controls on the side panel of the ROLAND RT-MICS?
MIC OUTPUT jack: Outputs the acoustic sound of the drum itself (mic sound).
MIX/ELEC OUTPUT jack: The electronic sound (or the sound mixed with the mic sound) is output.
[MIX/ELEC] switch: Selects what is output from the MIX/ELEC OUTPUT jack.
• MIX: The electronic sound and mic sound are mixed and output.
• ELEC: The electronic sound is output.
[MIC VOLUME] dial: Adjusts the volume of the mic sound (0–10).
[ELECTRONIC VOLUME] dial: Adjusts the volume of the electronic sound (0–10).
Micro USB port: When using the dedicated software, connect this port to your computer via a micro USB cable. Note that charge-only cables cannot transmit data.
[POWER] switch: Turns the power on/off. Long-press this switch to operate. Always turn the volume down before turning the unit on or off.
DC IN jack: Connect a sold-separately AC Adaptor (PSA-S series) to play without using battery power. Only use the dedicated AC adaptor.
What are the functions of the controls on the top and rear panels of the ROLAND RT-MICS?
Top Panel:
• Display: Indicates the number of the selected sound.
• [Sound] button: Switches the electronic sound (1–8) each time you press it. Following number 8, you’ll return to number 1. You can also long-press this button to mute the electronic sound (the ring will blink when muted).
• Head sensor: When you strike the drum, the head sensor responds and triggers an electronic sound. The ring briefly lights up when the head sensor responds.
Rear Panel:
• [SENS] dial: Adjusts the sensitivity of the head sensor (0–10).
• Logo panel: This is lit when you turn the power on. You can switch the logo light between lit and unlit by turning the power on while holding down the [Sound] button.
How do I install or replace the battery in the ROLAND RT-MICS?
The ROLAND RT-MICS operates on either a 9V battery or a separately sold AC adaptor. To install a battery:
1. Locate the battery case on the front of the unit.
2. Connect a 006P/9 V battery to the battery snap, being sure to carefully observe the battery’s polarity (+ versus -).
3. Place the battery inside the compartment.
Important notes:
• A zinc-carbon battery cannot be used. You must use an alkaline battery.
• Battery life is approximately 2 hours under typical performing conditions.
• When the battery runs low, the display blinks. Replace the battery as soon as possible.
What sounds are included with the factory settings of the ROLAND RT-MICS?
| No. | Sound | No. | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Snare A | 5 | Perc A |
| 2 | Snare B | 6 | Perc B |
| 3 | Clap A | 7 | Element A |
| 4 | Clap B | 8 | Element B |
What should I do if no sound is triggered from my ROLAND RT-MICS?
If no sound is triggered, try the following actions:
• Make sure that the trigger’s power supply, [MIC VOLUME] dial, [ELECTRONIC VOLUME] dial, and [SENS] dial are set appropriately.
• Make sure that the trigger is correctly connected to the playback amp or PA system.
• Make sure that this trigger is securely fastened to the drum hoop, and that the head sensor is contacting the drum head.
• Check whether the electronic sound might be muted. If the ring is blinking, the sound is muted.
• If you used the dedicated app to replace the sounds, they might seem quieter than other sounds if the loaded audio file has a low volume. Before you load the replacement sounds, process them so that they are at a sufficient volume.
Why are multiple sounds played when I only strike the drum once on my ROLAND RT-MICS (Retrigger)?
If you are experiencing retriggering, try the following actions:
• Use the [SENS] dial to lower the sensitivity.
• The tension bolts on both sides of the trigger should be fastened quite tightly.
• Reduce unneeded vibration, either by exchanging the head for a type that has a short sustain, or by using a ring mute, tape, or gel material to mute the head.
Why is an electronic sound heard from my ROLAND RT-MICS even when I don’t strike the drum, or it is triggered by another drum?
If you are getting unwanted triggers, try the following actions:
• Use the [SENS] dial to lower the sensitivity.
• In some cases, the trigger may be responding to vibrations from the floor or to sound from a monitor speaker or bass amp. Adjust the location and angle of your equipment to reduce such vibration or sound.
• Adjust your setup so that the trigger is not in contact with the stand or with another drum. If this does not solve the problem, mount the trigger at a position that is farther away from the other drum.
• Keep the tension of the snares fairly tight.
What should I do if my ROLAND RT-MICS has no response to soft strikes?
If the trigger is not responding to soft strikes, use the [SENS] dial to raise the sensitivity.
When making adjustments, take care to avoid double triggering or sound from other drums.
