What are the power supply guidelines for the ROLAND ASC-10?

Please follow these power supply guidelines for your ROLAND ASC-10:

• Use only a BOSS PSA AC Adaptor (sold separately).

• When making any connections with other devices, always turn off the power to all equipment first to help prevent damage or malfunction.

• Do not use this device on the same power circuit with any device that will generate line noise, such as a motor or variable lighting system.

• The power supply required by this unit is shown on its nameplate (rear panel). Be sure the line voltage in your installation meets this requirement.

• Avoid damaging the power cord; do not step on it, place heavy objects on it, etc.

• When disconnecting the AC adaptor from the wall outlet, grasp the plug itself; never pull on the cord.

• If the unit is to remain unused for an extended period of time, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Where should I place the ROLAND ASC-10?

For proper placement of your ROLAND ASC-10, avoid subjecting the unit to temperature extremes (e.g., direct sunlight in an enclosed vehicle). Also, avoid using or storing the unit in dusty or humid areas. This device may interfere with radio and television reception, so do not use it in the vicinity of such receivers.

How should I clean the ROLAND ASC-10?

For everyday cleaning, wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth (or one that has been slightly dampened with water). For stubborn dirt, use a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Afterwards, be sure to wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth.

Never use benzene, thinners, alcohol, or solvents of any kind to avoid the risk of discoloration and/or deformation.

What additional precautions should I take with the ROLAND ASC-10?

Please observe the following precautions:

• Protect the unit from strong impact.

• Do not allow objects or liquids of any kind to penetrate the unit. In the event of such an occurrence, discontinue use immediately and contact qualified service personnel.

• Should a malfunction occur, or if you suspect there is a problem, discontinue use immediately and contact qualified service personnel.

• To prevent the risk of electric shock, never attempt to open the unit or the AC adaptor.

What should I know about the memory backup battery in the ROLAND ASC-10?

The ROLAND ASC-10 contains a battery that maintains the contents of memory while the main power is off. The expected life of this battery is 5 years or more. However, to avoid the unexpected loss of memory data, it is strongly recommended that you change the battery every 5 years. The actual life of the battery will depend on the physical environment (especially temperature) in which the unit is used. When it is time to change the battery, consult with qualified service personnel.

What are the functions of the buttons on the front panel of the ROLAND ASC-10?

[USER MEMORY] Buttons ([1] – [8]): Each button corresponds to a memory position where you’ll store your custom-tuned scales. Once a scale is stored, pressing the corresponding button will instantly implement that scale. These buttons are also used in selecting the Part(s) / MIDI channel.

Number (MIDI) Buttons ([1] – [16]): These buttons are used when selecting Parts in the GS mode, or the MIDI channel in the Bender mode.

Note Buttons (C – B): These twelve buttons correspond to the twelve tones of an equally tempered scale. To create a custom scale, select the note(s) you wish to change by pressing the corresponding button(s), then raise or lower the pitch. Buttons [9] – [16] are also used in selecting the Part(s) / MIDI channel.

[CANCEL] Button: This button cancels the custom tuning (scale) currently in effect; the tuning instantly returns to equal temperament. If you press and hold a Note button (whose pitch has been detuned) and then press [CANCEL], that note will be returned to standard pitch.

[WRITE] Button: This button (in conjunction with the [USER MEMORY] buttons) is used to store the custom scales you create.

[MIDI] Button: This button (in conjunction with the Number buttons) is used to set the Part(s) (GS mode) or the MIDI channel (Bender mode). This setting determines which Part(s) or MIDI channel tuning data will be sent to.

[MODE] Button: This button selects one of the unit’s two modes: GS (LED off) or Bender (LED on).

[▼]/[▲] Buttons: These buttons are used to lower ([▼]) and raise ([▲]) the pitch of a selected note. When you press the [▼]/[▲] button initially, the pitch is lowered/raised by a quarter-tone (50 cents). Each subsequent press drops/rises the pitch by one cent. You can raise or lower the pitch of any note by a maximum of 60 cents. A semi-tone is equal to 100 cents.

What are the different modes of the ROLAND ASC-10 and when should I use them?

The ROLAND ASC-10 has two modes, selected by the [MODE] button:

GS Mode (button LED off): This is the default setting. Select the GS mode whenever you are using a GS compatible keyboard or sound module (e.g., Roland’s JV-30 or SC-55).

Bender Mode (button LED on): Use the Bender mode whenever you are using a non-GS keyboard or sound module that can respond to Pitch Bend (Bender) messages.

What are the functions of the switches and connectors on the rear panel of the ROLAND ASC-10?

[POWER] Switch: This switch turns the unit on and off.

DC Inlet: Connect the power adaptor (sold separately) to this inlet. Use only a BOSS PSA AC adaptor. Use of any other adaptor may cause damage, malfunction, or electric shock.

Cord Hook: Loop the power cord around the hook to prevent the adaptor from accidental disconnection during use.

MIDI Connectors:

MIDI IN: Receives incoming MIDI data from external devices.

MIDI OUT: Transmits MIDI data (Exclusive or Pitch Bend messages) originating within the ASC-10.

MIDI THRU: Re-transmits the data received via MIDI IN.

How do I connect the ROLAND ASC-10 in GS Mode?

GS mode should be selected for GS compatible keyboards or sound modules. The [MODE] button LED should be off. Here are two basic connection examples:

4. Sound module (if you’re using one)

5. Amp / mixer / powered monitor speakers

To power down the system, use the reverse order.

How do I create and save a custom scale on the ROLAND ASC-10?

Follow these steps to create a custom-tuned scale. This example shows lowering the notes “E” and “B” by 52 cents.

1. Press [E] in the Note button section. The button LED will begin to flash.

2. Press [▼]. The pitch of the note “E” will be lowered by a quarter-tone (50 cents). You can play the note to hear the change. To return the note to its original pitch, press and hold [E] and then press [CANCEL].

3. Press [▼] two more times. Each press lowers the pitch of the note “E” by one cent. The total change is now 52 cents.

4. Now press [B] in the Note button section. The LED on the [B] button will flash, and the LED on [E] will light continuously, indicating it has been altered.

5. Press [▼]. The pitch of the note “B” will be lowered by a quarter-tone (50 cents).

6. Press [▼] two more times. The note “B” is now lowered by 52 cents.

7. Now that the desired pitch changes have been made, press [WRITE]. The LED on the [WRITE] button and all LEDs on the [USER MEMORY] buttons will begin to flash. To cancel the Write operation, press [WRITE] again.

8. Press the [USER MEMORY] button ([1]–[8]) where you wish to store your custom scale. Its LED and the [WRITE] button’s LED will light momentarily and then go out. Your custom-tuned scale is now stored.

You can instantly recall the scale by pressing its [USER MEMORY] button. Press [CANCEL] to return to standard equal temperament. An internal battery maintains your settings when the power is off.

How can I replace a scale stored in a memory position on the ROLAND ASC-10?

To replace a scale stored at a particular memory position with another, follow these steps:

1. Press the corresponding [USER MEMORY] button to select the scale you wish to replace.

2. Reset the detuned pitches to equal temperament: in turn, press each lit Note button and [CANCEL] simultaneously.

3. Create your new scale using the method as previously described.

4. Store the new scale at the same memory position using the Write operation.

How do I select which Parts receive tuning data in GS Mode on the ROLAND ASC-10?
