What is the function of the Tape counter and Counter reset button?
The Tape counter displays the tape position. The Counter reset button is used to reset the tape counter to zero.
What do the PEAK LEVEL indicators show?
The PEAK LEVEL indicators are 2-color LED indicators that show the peak audio levels during recording and playback.
What is the PHONES jack for?
The PHONES jack is for connecting stereo headphones. It has an output level of 0.3 mW into an 8 Ω load and is compatible with headphones having an impedance of 8 Ω to 1 kΩ.
What are the Cassette operation buttons and their functions?
The cassette operation buttons are:
• REC (Record) button: Press to start recording (must be pressed with the PLAY button or after the PLAY button is engaged, depending on the mechanism design, typically with PLAY for older decks).
• ▶ PLAY button: Press to start tape playback.
• ◀◀ REW (Rewind) button: Press to rewind the tape.
• ▶▶ FF (Fast Forward) button: Press to fast forward the tape.
• ■ STOP/▲ EJECT button: Press to stop tape operation. Pressing it when the tape is stopped will eject the cassette.
• ❙❙ PAUSE button: Press to temporarily pause recording or playback.
What are the MIC (Microphone) jacks for?
The MIC (Microphone) jacks (x2) are for connecting microphones for recording. They have a maximum sensitivity of 0.2 mV (-72 dBs) and a matching impedance of 600 Ω to 10 kΩ.
What is the NR SYSTEM switch for?
The NR SYSTEM switch allows you to select the noise reduction system. You can turn it OFF or select ANRS (Automatic Noise Reduction System) / Dolby B NR. ANRS/Dolby B NR greatly reduces tape hiss noise, improving the signal-to-noise ratio by 5 dB at 1 kHz and by 10 dB above 5 kHz when activated.
What are the TAPE SELECT switches for?
The TAPE SELECT switches are used to set the deck’s recording and playback equalization and bias levels according to the type of cassette tape being used. The options are:
• NORM (for SF/Normal tape)
• CrO2 (for SA/Chrome tape)
• METAL (for Metal tape)
How do I use the REC LEVEL controls?
The REC LEVEL controls are used to adjust the recording level. There are two knobs:
• Forward knob: Adjusts the recording level for the Left channel.
• Rearward knob: Adjusts the recording level for the Right channel.
What is the REC/PLAY (DIN) socket for?
The REC/PLAY (DIN) socket is a combined input/output connector for recording and playback using a DIN-type cable. For input (recording), it accepts a minimum input level of 0.1 mV/kΩ with an input impedance of 10 kΩ. For output (playback), it provides an output level of 300 mV with an output impedance of 5 kΩ. The matching impedance is 50 kΩ or more.
What are the LINE IN (REC) terminals for?
The LINE IN (REC) terminals (Input jack x 2) are for connecting an external audio source (like a receiver or another player) for recording. They accept a minimum input level of 80 mV (-20 dBs) and have an input impedance of 100 kΩ.
What are the LINE OUT (PLAY) terminals for?
The LINE OUT (PLAY) terminals (Output jack x 2) are for sending the playback audio signal to an amplifier or another recording device. They provide an output level of 300 mV and have an output impedance of 5 kΩ.
What is the Voltage select switch for?
The Voltage select switch is used to set the operating voltage of the cassette deck to match the local power supply. This feature is available on models KD-D2B/C/E/J/U, allowing selection between AC 240V, 220V, and 120V (and 100V for KD-D2U). Model KD-D2A is not provided with a voltage select switch and operates on AC 240V 50 Hz only.
What is the Power cord for?
The Power cord is used to connect the stereo cassette deck to an AC power outlet.
How should the controls and switch knobs be set when repacking the unit?
When repacking the unit, the controls and switch knobs should be set as follows:
| Control/Switch | Position |
|---|---|
| Power switch | OFF |
| REC level control | MIN |
| Tape select | SA/CrO2 |
| NR SYSTEM | ANRS/DOLBY B |
| Mecha. operation buttons | OFF |
| Counter | 000 |
