The accessories included with the JURA S8 are:

The JURA S8 is designed and intended for private domestic use. It should only be used for coffee preparation and to heat milk and water. Use for any other purpose will be deemed improper.

Please carefully read and observe the important safety information for your JURA S8:

To avoid danger of potentially fatal electric shock:

• Never use a machine which is damaged or has a defective mains cable.

• In the event of signs of damage, unplug the machine immediately from the mains supply and contact JURA service.

• If the mains cable is damaged, it must be replaced with a special mains cable available from JURA or authorized service centers.

• Ensure the machine and mains cable are not located close to hot surfaces.

• Ensure the mains cable is not trapped and does not rub against sharp edges.

• Never open and repair the machine yourself. It contains live parts.

• To completely disconnect from the power supply, first switch off the machine using the On/Off button, then remove the mains plug from the power socket.

To avoid risk of scalds or burns:

• Place the machine out of the reach of children.

• Do not touch any hot parts. Use the handles provided.

• Ensure the milk system is correctly installed and clean. If incorrectly fitted or blocked, parts might come off.

To avoid damage and associated risk of injury or fire:

• Never allow the mains cable to loosely hang down.

• Protect the JURA S8 from rain, frost, and direct sunlight.

• Do not immerse the machine, mains cable, or connections in water.

• Do not put the machine or any individual parts in the dishwasher.

• Before cleaning, switch the machine off with the On/Off button. Always wipe with a damp cloth, not a wet one.

• Only connect the machine to the mains voltage specified on the rating plate.

• Use only original JURA maintenance products.

• Do not use alkaline cleaning agents.

• Do not use any coffee beans treated with additives or caramelized coffee beans.

• Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water.

• Switch the machine off and unplug it if you will be absent for a long period.

• Children may not clean or service the machine unless supervised.

• Do not allow children to play with the machine.

• Keep children under the age of 8 away from the machine, or supervise them constantly.

When handling the CLARIS Smart filter cartridge, please follow these safety rules:

• Filter cartridges should be kept out of the reach of children.

• Store filter cartridges in a dry place in the sealed packaging.

• Protect cartridges from heat and direct sunlight.

• Do not use damaged filter cartridges.

• Do not open filter cartridges.

The JURA S8 features a touchscreen display that can be operated in two ways:

• Touch: Touch the display with your finger to start coffee preparation or change settings in programming mode.

• Slide: Move your finger across the display from left to right or top to bottom (or vice versa). This allows you to select different specialty coffees or switch between program items.

When setting up your JURA S8, please note the following:

• Place the machine on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water.

• Choose a spot that protects the machine against overheating. Ensure that the ventilation slots are not covered.

To fill the bean container, follow these steps:

1. Only use roasted, untreated coffee beans. Coffee beans treated with additives (e.g., sugar), ground coffee, or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.

2. Remove the aroma preservation cover.

3. Remove any dirt or foreign objects from inside the bean container.

4. Fill the bean container with coffee beans and close the aroma preservation cover.

When you use the machine for the first time, you must set the water hardness. Use the Aquadur test strips supplied with the machine:

1. Hold the test strip briefly (for 1 second) under flowing water.

2. Shake off the water.

3. Wait for about 1 minute.

4. Read the degree of water hardness from the discoloration of the test strip and the description on the packaging. You can then enter this value into the machine.

Precondition: The bean container has been filled and you have determined the water hardness.

1. Connect the mains cable to the machine and insert the plug into a power socket.

2. Press the On/Off button to switch the JURA S8 on. ‘Sprachauswahl’ / ‘Deutsch’ appears.

3. To display more languages, move your finger up or down the list. Touch your desired language and then touch ‘Save’. ‘Saved’ appears briefly.

4. ‘Water hardness’ will be displayed. Move your finger across the display to change the setting to match your determined water hardness (e.g., ’25 °dH’). Touch ‘Save’. ‘Saved’ appears briefly.

5. ‘Insert filter’ is displayed. Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the fine foam frother.

6. Remove the water tank and rinse it with cold water.

7. Fit the supplied filter cartridge extension on top of the CLARIS Smart filter cartridge.

8. Insert the filter cartridge with its extension into the water tank. Turn it clockwise until it audibly clicks into place.

9. Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert it. The machine automatically detects the filter.

10. ‘Filter is being rinsed’ is displayed. Water flows out of the fine foam frother. The water may be slightly discolored, which is not harmful.

11. The system will fill. Then ‘Empty drip tray’ is displayed. Empty the drip tray and put it back into the machine.

12. Place a receptacle under the coffee spout. The machine will heat and then rinse. The rinse stops automatically, and the start screen is displayed. Your JURA S8 is ready for use.

For best results, use milk with a temperature of 4–8 °C from a milk cooler or container.

1. Remove the protective cover from the milk system on the machine.

2. Connect one end of the milk pipe to the milk system.

3. Connect the other end of the milk pipe to a milk container or a milk cooler.

You can connect your JURA S8 wirelessly to a compatible accessory (e.g., Cool Control Wireless milk cooler). The receiver (JURA Smart Connect) must be plugged into the service socket.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

1. Touch ‘P’ to enter programming mode.

2. ‘Machine settings’ is displayed. Touch it.

3. ‘Switch off after’ is displayed. Move your finger across the display until ‘Connect accessory’ is in the center.

4. Touch ‘Connect accessory’.

5. Now follow the instructions on the display to connect the accessory to your JURA S8.

The JURA S8 offers various ways to prepare a specialty coffee, milk, or hot water:

• Preparation using the start screen: Simply touch the desired product displayed on the start screen. Standard products include ‘Espresso’, ‘Coffee’, ‘2 x Coffee’, ‘Hot water’, ‘Cappuccino’, ‘Latte macchiato’, ‘Flat White’, and ‘Milk foam’.

• Preparation using the product selector view: For more product options, touch the product selector symbol in the top right of the screen. Additional products like ‘Milk’, ‘Caffè latte’, and ‘2 x Ristretto’ will be displayed. Move your finger across the display to bring the desired product into focus and touch it to start preparation.

Example: Prepare one coffee.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

1. Place a cup under the coffee spout.

2. Touch ‘Coffee’ on the display.

3. Preparation starts. During the grinding operation, you can move your finger across the display to adjust the coffee strength. During preparation, you can adjust the amount of water.

4. The preset amount of water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. The start screen is displayed.

Example: Prepare two ristretti.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

1. Place two cups under the coffee spout.

2. Touch the product selector symbol (top right) to go to the product selector view.

3. Move your finger across the display until ‘2 x Ristretto’ is displayed in the center.

4. Touch ‘2 x Ristretto’ to start preparation.

5. Preparation starts, and the preset amount of water flows into the cups. Preparation stops automatically.

Example: Prepare one latte macchiato.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed, and milk is connected to the fine foam frother.

1. Place a glass under the fine foam frother.

2. Set the selector switch on the professional fine foam frother to the Milk Foam position (vertical position).

3. Touch ‘Latte macchiato’.

4. ‘Latte macchiato’ appears, and the preset amount of milk foam flows into the glass. There will be a short interval for the milk to separate from the foam.

5. Coffee preparation starts. The preset amount of water for espresso flows into the glass. Preparation stops automatically.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed, and milk is connected to the milk system.

1. Place a cup under the fine foam frother.

2. For hot milk, set the selector switch to the Milk position (horizontal position).

3. For milk foam, set the selector switch to the Milk Foam position (vertical position).

4. Touch ‘Milk foam’ on the start screen.

5. The milk or milk foam is prepared. The preset amount flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically.

You can use the filler funnel for a second, ground coffee variety. Never add more than two level measuring spoons of ground coffee.

Example: Prepare one espresso using ground coffee.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

1. Place an espresso cup under the coffee spout.

2. Open the cover of the filler funnel for ground coffee. The message ‘Please add ground coffee’ appears.

3. Place one level measuring spoon of ground coffee into the filler funnel.

4. Close the cover of the filler funnel.

5. Touch ‘Espresso’.

6. Preparation starts, and the preset amount of water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically.

You can adjust the grinder to suit the degree of roast of your coffee. Only adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is running, otherwise the grinder adjustment switch could be damaged.

Example: Change the consistency of grind during the preparation of an espresso.

1. Place a cup under the coffee spout.

2. Open the cover of the grinder adjustment switch.

3. Touch ‘Espresso’ to start preparation.

4. Turn the grinder adjustment switch to the desired position while the grinder is running.

5. The preset amount of water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically.

Example: Prepare hot water for green tea.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

1. Touch the product selector symbol (top right).

2. Move your finger across the display until ‘Hot water for green tea’ is in the center.

3. Touch ‘Hot water for green tea’. ‘Insert hot-water nozzle’ is displayed.

4. Remove the professional fine foam frother from the milk system.

5. Fit the supplied hot-water nozzle on the milk system.

6. Touch ‘Next’.

7. The preset amount of water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically.

To ensure optimum coffee quality, the JURA S8 requires daily maintenance:

• Pull out the drip tray.

• Empty the coffee grounds container and the drip tray. Rinse them both with warm water. Always empty the coffee grounds container when the machine is switched on to reset the counter.

• Refit the coffee grounds container and the drip tray.

• Rinse the water tank with clean water.

• Clean the milk system (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the milk system’).

• Remove the milk pipe and rinse it thoroughly under running water.

• Dismantle and rinse the professional fine foam frother.

• Wipe the surface of the machine with a clean, soft, damp cloth.

Carry out the following maintenance actions regularly or as required:

• For hygiene, change the milk pipe and interchangeable milk spout approximately every 3 months. Replacements are available from specialized dealers.

• Clean the inside of the water tank with a brush. For more details, see the section on descaling the water tank.

• If traces of milk and coffee stick to the cup grille, clean it.

When the JURA S8 is switched off, the system automatically rinses if a specialty coffee has been prepared. If milk has been prepared, you will also be prompted to clean the milk system.

1. Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the milk system.

2. Press the On/Off button.

3. If milk was prepared, you will be prompted to ‘Clean the milk system’. After 10 seconds, the switch-off process continues automatically. If you did not start the milk system cleaning, it will be rinsed first (‘Milk system is being rinsed’).

4. ‘Machine is rinsing’ appears, and the system rinses itself. The operation stops automatically, and your JURA S8 is switched off.

Touch ‘P’ to enter programming mode. Move your finger across the display to navigate through the program items and permanently save the desired settings. The following settings can be made:

Touch a product on the start screen for about 2 seconds to view the list of setting options. You can then change various settings permanently for all specialty coffees, milk, and hot water. You can only change the settings of products stored on the start screen.

Example: Change the coffee strength for one espresso.

1. Touch ‘Espresso’ on the start screen for about 2 seconds until the list of possible settings is displayed.

2. Touch ‘Product settings’. ‘Espresso’ is displayed.

3. Move your finger across the display until ‘Coffee strength’ is in the center.

4. Move your finger to the left or right to change the setting for the coffee strength.

5. Touch ‘Save’. ‘Saved’ appears briefly.

6. Touch ‘Back’ to return to the start screen.

You can set your JURA S8 to switch off automatically 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1-9 hours after the last action.

1. From the start screen, touch ‘P’.

2. Touch ‘Machine settings’.

3. ‘Switch off after’ is displayed. Touch it.

4. Move your finger to the left or right to change the switch-off time.

5. Touch ‘Save’. ‘Saved’ appears briefly.

6. Touch ‘Back’ to return to the start screen.

You can set an energy-saving mode (‘Save energy’) in the ‘Machine settings’.

• ‘Save energy’ / ‘1’ (On): Soon after the last preparation, the JURA S8 stops heating up. The machine must heat up before you can prepare another beverage.

• ‘Save energy’ / ‘0’ (Off): All beverages can be prepared without waiting.

Example: Switch energy-saving mode off.

1. From the start screen, touch ‘P’.

2. Touch ‘Machine settings’.

3. Move your finger across the display until ‘Save energy’ is in the center.

4. Touch ‘Save energy’.

5. Move your finger across the controller and set it to ‘0’.

6. Touch ‘Save’. ‘Saved’ appears briefly.

7. Touch ‘Back’ to return to the start screen.

You can reset the machine to its factory settings. Your JURA S8 will then switch off.

1. From the start screen, touch ‘P’.

2. Touch ‘Machine settings’.

3. Move your finger across the display until ‘Factory setting’ is in the center.

4. Touch ‘Factory setting’.

5. The display will ask ‘Reset the machine to the factory settings?’. Touch ‘Yes’.

6. ‘Saved’ appears briefly, and your JURA S8 switches off.

You can initiate the rinse operation manually at any time.

1. Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the fine foam frother.

2. From the start screen, touch ‘P’.

3. Move your finger across the display until ‘Maintenance status’ is in the center.

4. Touch ‘Maintenance status’.

5. Move your finger across the display until ‘Rinse’ is in the center.

6. Touch ‘Rinse’ to start the operation. ‘Machine is rinsing’ and ‘Milk system is being rinsed’ will appear.

7. The rinse stops automatically, and the start screen is displayed.

To ensure the milk system works properly, you must clean it daily when you have been preparing milk. Use only original JURA maintenance products. Use the supplied container for this process.

1. The start screen displays ‘Clean the milk system’. Touch it.

2. Touch ‘Clean the milk system’ again, then touch ‘Start’ twice.

3. Remove the milk pipe from the milk container or cooler.

4. Add JURA milk system cleaner to the front part of the supplied container up to the bottom mark.

5. Then fill with water up to the upper mark.

6. Place the container under the fine foam frother.

7. Connect the milk pipe to the container (the pipe must be fitted with a connector).

8. Touch ‘Next’. The milk system is cleaned. The operation is interrupted, and ‘Fresh water’ is displayed.

9. Rinse the container thoroughly and fill the front part with fresh water up to the upper mark.

10. Place this under the fine foam frother and reconnect the milk pipe to the container.

11. Touch ‘Next’. The milk system is cleaned with fresh water.

12. The operation stops automatically.

The fine foam frother must be dismantled and rinsed daily if you have been preparing milk.

1. Remove the milk pipe and rinse it thoroughly under running water.

2. Pull the professional fine foam frother down and off the machine.

3. Dismantle the fine foam frother into its individual parts.

4. Rinse all parts under running water. If there are severely dried-on milk residues, immerse the parts in a solution of 250 ml cold water and 1 capful of JURA milk system cleaner, then rinse thoroughly.

5. Re-assemble the professional fine foam frother, ensuring all parts are correctly and firmly connected.

6. Re-fit the fine foam frother on the milk system.

Your JURA S8 no longer has to be descaled if you are using the CLARIS Smart filter cartridge.

1. Remove and empty the water tank.

2. Fit the filter cartridge extension on top of a new CLARIS Smart filter cartridge.

3. Insert the filter cartridge with its extension into the water tank.

4. Turn the filter cartridge clockwise until it audibly clicks into place.

5. Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert it.

6. The machine automatically detects the filter. ‘Saved’ appears, followed by ‘Filter is being rinsed’. Water flows into the drip tray.

7. Rinsing stops automatically. ‘Empty drip tray’ is displayed.

8. Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. The start screen is displayed.

Once the filter cartridge stops working, the JURA S8 will prompt you to change it.

1. The start screen displays ‘Change the filter’. Touch it.

2. Touch ‘Change the filter’ again.

3. Remove and empty the water tank.

4. Turn the old filter cartridge anticlockwise and remove it with its extension from the water tank.

5. Fit the filter cartridge extension on top of a new CLARIS Smart filter cartridge.

6. Insert the new filter cartridge with its extension into the water tank, turning it clockwise until it clicks into place.

7. Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert it.

8. ‘Saved’ appears briefly. ‘Filter is being rinsed’ is displayed as water flows into the drip tray.

9. Rinsing stops. ‘Empty drip tray’ is displayed. Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back.

10. The start screen is displayed.

After 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses, the JURA S8 will prompt you to clean it. The cleaning program lasts approximately 20 minutes. Do not interrupt it.

1. The start screen displays ‘Clean machine’. Touch it.

2. Touch ‘Clean’, then ‘Start’ twice.

3. ‘Empty coffee grounds container’ is displayed. Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back.

4. Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the fine foam frother. Touch ‘Next’.

5. ‘Machine is being cleaned’ appears, and water flows out. The operation is interrupted. ‘Add cleaning tablet’ is displayed.

6. Open the cover of the filler funnel for ground coffee.

7. Insert one JURA cleaning tablet into the filler funnel and close the cover.

8. Touch ‘Next’. ‘Machine is being cleaned’ continues, with water flowing repeatedly from the spouts. The operation stops automatically.

9. ‘Empty coffee grounds container’ is displayed. Empty the drip tray and container and put them back.

10. Cleaning is now complete. The start screen is displayed.

The JURA S8 will automatically prompt you to descale it when necessary. This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. Allow it to run to the end to prevent damage. If you use a CLARIS Smart filter, you will not be prompted to descale.

1. The start screen displays ‘Decalcify machine’. Touch it.

2. Touch ‘Descale’, then ‘Start’ twice.

3. ‘Empty drip tray’ is displayed. Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back.

4. ‘Pour descaling agent into water tank’ is displayed. Remove and empty the water tank.

5. Completely dissolve 3 JURA descaling tablets in a receptacle holding 500 ml of water. Pour the solution into the empty water tank and insert it.

6. Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the fine foam frother. Touch ‘Next’.

7. ‘Machine is being descaled’ appears, and water flows out of the fine foam frother repeatedly. The operation is interrupted. ‘Empty drip tray’ is displayed. Empty the drip tray and container and put them back.

8. ‘Fill water tank’ is displayed. Remove the water tank, rinse it thoroughly, fill it with fresh, cold water, and reinsert it.

9. Place the receptacles back under the spouts. Touch ‘Next’.

10. The descaling operation continues. The operation is interrupted again with ‘Empty drip tray’. Empty the drip tray and container and put them back.

11. Descaling is now complete. The start screen is displayed.

To protect the JURA S8 from frost during transport, the system must be emptied.

1. Remove the milk pipe from the fine foam frother.

2. Place a receptacle under the fine foam frother.

3. Touch ‘Milk foam’ on the start screen.

4. Remove and empty the water tank.

5. Change the time to ’60 sec.’. Steam will continue to be discharged from the fine foam frother until the system is empty.

6. ‘Fill water tank’ will be displayed. Press the On/Off button.

7. Your JURA S8 is switched off and ready for transport.

This message means the water tank is empty and you cannot prepare any products. You need to fill the water tank.

This message means the coffee grounds container is full and you cannot prepare any products. You need to empty the coffee grounds container and the drip tray.

This message means the drip tray is not inserted correctly or is not inserted at all. You need to fit the drip tray correctly.

This message means the bean container is empty. You cannot prepare any specialty coffees, but you can prepare hot water and milk. You need to fill the bean container.

This message means the filter cartridge no longer works. You need to replace the CLARIS Smart filter cartridge.

This message means your JURA S8 is prompting you to clean it. You should perform the cleaning procedure.

This message means your JURA S8 is prompting you to descale it. You should perform the descaling procedure.

This message means the system is too hot to start a maintenance program. You should wait for several minutes until the system has cooled or prepare a specialty coffee or hot water to help it cool.

This issue is caused by a dirty fine foam frother. To fix it, you should clean the fine foam frother as part of the milk system cleaning procedure, and also dismantle and rinse the fine foam frother.

This can happen for two reasons:

• The coffee is ground too finely and is obstructing the system. You should set the grinder to a coarser setting.

• The water hardness may not have been correctly set, leading to limescale buildup. You should perform the descaling procedure.

This happens because the water tank float is trapped. You should descale the water tank to free the float.

A very loud noise from the grinder indicates there are foreign objects in the grinder. You should contact customer support.

These errors can appear if the machine has been exposed to the cold for a long period, causing the heating to be disabled for safety reasons. You should warm the machine at room temperature.
