The JURA NESPRESSO N90 coffee machine consists of the following components:

Please adhere to the following safety warnings when using your JURA NESPRESSO N90:

• Children do not realize the dangers involved in using electric appliances, for this reason always keep an eye on children when they use electric appliances.

• The machine may only be used by instructed persons.

• Never use a defective machine or a machine with a defective mains cable.

• Never immerse the machine in water.

For safe operation of your JURA NESPRESSO N90, please follow these precautions:

• Never expose the machine to weather (rain, snow, frost), and never touch the machine when your hands are wet.

• Place the machine on a firm, level base that is resistant to any water that may leak. Never stand it on hot or warm surfaces (oven hobs). Keep it out of the reach of children.

• If you don’t use the machine for a longer time (holidays, etc.), always disconnect the mains cable.

• Always disconnect the mains cable before cleaning the machine.

• When disconnecting the mains cable, never pull on the mains cable or the machine itself.

• Never repair or open the coffee machine yourself. Any repairs may only be carried out by authorized service shops using original spare parts and accessories.

• The machine is connected to mains supply via a mains cable. Make sure nobody can trip over the mains cable to prevent injuries and protect the machine against damage. Make sure children and pets cannot reach the machine.

• Never put the machine or individual parts of it into a dishwasher.

• Make sure to install the machine at a place with sufficient air circulation to prevent overheating.

To commission your JURA NESPRESSO N90 for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Check that your local mains supply voltage complies with the information on the type plate on the underside of the machine.

2. Ensure the electrical fuse has a sufficient capacity of 10 Ampères.

3. Take out the water tank, rinse it with cold tap water, and fill it with fresh, cold water. Reinstall the tank, ensuring it engages properly.

4. Actuate the power switch (18) on the machine.

5. Use the ON/OFF key to switch on the machine. The display will show SPRACHE / DEUTSCH.

6. Use the arrow keys to select your required language (e.g., ENGLISH).

7. Press the programming key to save the language setting. The display will show FILL SYSTEM – PRESS P.

8. Press the programming key. The system will start filling and heating.

9. The display will show RINSE – PRESS DRAW-OFF KEY. Place a cup under the coffee spout and press one of the draw-off keys (SMALLCUP or LARGECUP).

10. The machine will rinse. When finished, the display will show READY.

To adjust the water hardness setting on your JURA NESPRESSO N90, follow these steps. Note: This function is not available if a Claris plus filter cartridge is installed.

1. Switch on the machine with the ON/OFF key and wait for it to display READY.

2. Press the programming key until the machine enters programming mode (DISPLAY FILTER).

3. Press the arrow keys until the display shows HARDNESS.

4. Press the programming key to activate this step. The current level will be displayed (e.g., LEVEL 3).

5. Use the arrow keys to select the required hardness level (from HARDNESS to HARDNESS 4).

6. Press the programming key to confirm your setting.

7. Press the arrow keys until the display shows EXIT.

8. Press the programming key to quit programming mode. The display will show READY.

The hardness levels correspond to the following:

• WATER HARDNESS: Water hardness function switched off

• WATER HARDNESS 1: German degree 1 to 7°

• WATER HARDNESS 2: German degree 8 to 15°

• WATER HARDNESS 3: German degree 16 to 23°

• WATER HARDNESS 4: German degree 24 to 30°

Follow these steps to install and activate a new Claris plus filter cartridge:

1. Switch on the machine and wait until it displays READY.

2. Remove the cartridge holder from the water tank. Carefully install the filter cartridge into the holder.

3. Fill the water tank with cold, fresh tap water and install the cartridge holder back into the tank.

4. Press the programming key until the machine switches to programming mode (DISPLAY FILTER).

5. Press the programming key to activate the programming step. The display will show NO.

6. Press the arrow keys until the display shows YES.

7. Press the programming key to confirm your setting. The display will show VALVE / OPEN.

8. Place a container (approx. 1 litre) under the hot water jet and switch the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position.

9. The machine will rinse the filter. The display will show FILTER / RINSING.

10. The water draw-off stops automatically, and the display shows VALVE / CLOSE.

11. Turn back the hot water / steam valve to the Coffee position.

12. The display will show READY. The filter is now activated.

To replace a used Claris plus filter cartridge, follow these steps:

1. When the machine is READY, press the programming key until it enters programming mode (DISPLAY FILTER).

2. Press the programming key again to activate the step. The display will show REPLACE.

3. Remove the water tank and replace the old Claris plus cartridge with a new one.

4. Fill the water tank with cold, fresh tap water and install it again.

5. Press the programming key. The display will show VALVE / OPEN.

6. Place a container (approx. 1 litre) under the hot water nozzle and switch the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position.

7. The machine will rinse the new filter. The display will show FILTER / RINSING.

8. The water draw-off stops automatically, and the display shows VALVE / CLOSE.

9. Turn back the hot water / steam valve to the Coffee position.

10. The display will show READY.

To prepare an espresso, please follow this procedure:

1. Switch on the machine with the ON/OFF key.

2. The machine will heat up and perform a rinse cycle. Wait until the display shows READY.

3. Open the cover and install a Nespresso capsule.

4. The display will show COVER / CLOSE. Close the cover again.

5. Place a cup under the coffee spout.

6. Press the required draw-off key (SMALLCUP or LARGECUP).

7. The product will be prepared. The display will then show EJECT CAPSULE.

8. Open the cover. The used capsule will be ejected into the internal container.

9. The display will show COVER / CLOSE. Close the cover.

10. The display will show READY, and the machine is ready for the next coffee.

You can stop the draw-off at any time by pressing any key.

To get hot water from your machine, follow these steps:

1. Install the hot water jet onto the machine.

2. Switch on the machine with the ON/OFF key and wait for it to display READY.

3. Place a cup under the hot water jet.

4. Turn the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position.

5. The machine will dispense the pre-programmed portion of water. The display shows WATER / PORTION.

6. When finished, the display will show VALVE / CLOSE.

7. Turn the hot water / steam valve back to the Coffee position.

8. The display will show READY.

Note: You can stop the water draw-off at any time by turning the valve back to the Coffee position.

To dispense steam for heating liquids or frothing milk, follow these instructions:

1. Install the steam / frothing jet.

2. Switch on the machine and wait until it is READY.

3. Press the steam draw-off key. The machine will begin heating for steam (DISPLAY MACHINE HEATING).

4. When ready, the display will show STEAM / READY.

5. Immerse the frothing aid in the milk or liquid you want to heat.

6. Turn the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position.

7. Steam will be dispensed. When you have enough, turn the valve back to the Coffee position.

8. The display will show STEAM / READY.

To return to coffee mode, press the steam draw-off key again. The machine will cool down (DISPLAY MACHINE COOLING) and then show READY.

To use the Professional Cappuccino Frother:

Drawing off hot milk:

1. Activate the steam draw-off mode (see Chapter 10 “Drawing off steam”).

2. Turn the selector valve (1) on the frother to area (3) for hot milk.

3. Draw off hot milk by turning the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position.

Drawing off frothed milk for cappuccino:

1. Activate the steam draw-off mode.

2. Turn the selector valve (1) on the frother to area (2) for frothed milk.

3. Draw off frothed milk by turning the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position.

4. To draw off coffee afterwards, you must return to Coffee Ready mode (see Chapter 11 “Returning to Coffee Ready”) and turn the selector switch (1) to the horizontal position.

Cleaning the Frother:

After frothing, it’s important to clean the frother. Fill a jug with water and immerse the intake-tube in it. Draw off steam until the water/steam mixture flowing into your cup is completely clean.

To program the amount of water for your coffee cups, follow these steps:

1. Switch on the machine and wait until it displays READY.

2. Place a cup under the coffee spout.

3. Press and hold the draw-off key you wish to program (SMALLCUP or LARGECUP) until the display shows ENOUGH / COFFEE?

4. The machine will start dispensing coffee.

5. As soon as the required quantity of coffee is in the cup, press the draw-off key again to stop.

6. The display will show READY. This water quantity is now saved for that key.

Programming the steam portion:

1. With the machine READY, press the programming key until you enter programming mode.

2. Use the arrow keys to navigate to DISPLAY STEAM.

3. Press the programming key to activate the step. The current duration (e.g., 20 SEC.) is displayed.

4. Use the arrow keys to adjust the seconds.

5. Press the programming key to confirm your setting.

6. Navigate to EXIT and press the programming key to leave the mode.

Programming the water portion:

1. With the machine READY, enter programming mode.

2. Use the arrow keys to navigate to DISPLAY WATER.

3. Press the programming key to activate the step. The display shows VALVE / OPEN.

4. Turn the hot water / steam valve to the Hot Water / Steam position. The display shows ENOUGH / WATER?

5. When the required amount of water has been dispensed, turn the valve back to the Coffee position.

6. The new amount is now saved. Navigate to EXIT and press the programming key to leave the mode.

To set the clock on your machine, follow these steps:

1. With the machine READY, press the programming key to enter programming mode.

2. Use the arrow keys to navigate until the display shows TIME.

3. Press the programming key to activate the step. The display shows CLOCK.

4. Press the programming key to activate the hour setting dialog. The display shows –:–.

5. Use the arrow keys to adjust the hours.

6. Press the programming key to save the hour and activate the minute setting. The display shows –:– with the cursor on the minutes.

7. Use the arrow keys to adjust the minutes.

8. Press the programming key to confirm your settings.

9. Navigate to EXIT and press the programming key to quit programming mode.

Programming the automatic switch-on time:

Note: You must set the clock first.

1. With the machine READY, enter programming mode.

2. Use the arrow keys to navigate to TIME, then press the programming key.

3. Use the arrow keys to navigate to AUTO ON, then press the programming key.

4. Set the desired switch-on hour using the arrow keys and press the programming key to save.

5. Set the desired switch-on minute using the arrow keys and press the programming key to save.

6. Navigate to EXIT and press the programming key to quit.

Programming the automatic switch-off time:

1. With the machine READY, enter programming mode.

2. Navigate to TIME, then press the programming key.

3. Navigate to AUTO OFF, then press the programming key to activate the dialog.

4. The display shows the current setting (e.g., 5 HRS). Use the arrow keys to adjust the switch-off time (in a range between 0.5 and 8 hours) or select –:– to switch the function off.

5. Press the programming key to confirm.

6. Navigate to EXIT and press the programming key to quit.

When the display shows SCALED / READY, it is time to de-scale your machine. This operation takes about 40 minutes and should not be interrupted.

1. Switch off the machine with the ON/OFF key.

2. Take out and empty the water tank.

3. Press the programming key until the display shows TRAY / EMPTY.

4. Take out the drip tray, empty it, and reinstall it.

5. The display shows FILL IN AGENT – PRESS P.

6. Completely dissolve the JURA de-scaling tablets (3 tablets) or 1 pack of NESPRESSO De-scaling Kit in 0.5 litres of water and fill the mixture into the water tank. Reinstall the tank.

7. Press the programming key. The display shows VALVE / OPEN.

8. Put a large container under the hot water jet and turn the hot water / steam valve to Hot Water / Steam.

9. The machine will start the de-scaling process. This will happen in several stages. The display will show MACHINE / DECALC. and prompt you to open and close the valve at intervals.

10. Follow the on-screen prompts: CLOSE VALVE, OPEN VALVE.

11. The display will show EMPTY / TRAY. Take out the tray, empty it, and reinstall it.

12. The display will show FILL / WATER. Thoroughly rinse the water tank and fill it with fresh cold tap water. Then reinstall it.

13. The display shows P-TASTE. Press the programming key to start the rinse cycle.

14. Follow the on-screen prompts to OPEN VALVE and CLOSE VALVE as the machine rinses itself.

15. The display will show TRAY / EMPTY. Empty the tray and reinstall it.

16. The display will show READY. The machine will switch off automatically after a few seconds. The de-scaling is complete.

• Never use scrapers, abrasive cloths, sponges or caustic chemicals for cleaning.

• Clean the inside and outside of the case using a soft, moist cloth.

• Clean the replaceable hot water jet and steam/frothing jet after each use.

• After heating milk, draw off some water to clean the inside of the pivoting jet.

• Disassemble the steam/frothing jet for proper cleaning.

• Clean the display dialog system / control panel with a micro-fibre cloth.

• The water tank should be rinsed daily and refilled with fresh water.

• If lime-scaling forms in the tank, remove it using a commercial de-scaling agent. When de-scaling the water tank, take it out of the machine.

• Remove the Claris plus filter cartridge, if applicable, before de-scaling the water tank.

The “WATER / REFILL” message can be caused by several issues. Here are the remedies:

• Cause: Water tank is empty. Remedy: Refill the water tank.

• Cause: Water level indicator is jammed. Remedy: Empty the tank, rinse it, and install it again.

• Cause: The tank is calcified, and the water level indicator is jammed. Remedy: Remove the tank, de-scale it, rinse it thoroughly, fill it, and install it again.

The “TRAY / EMPTY” message can have two causes:

• Cause: The capsule container is full. Remedy: Take out the drip tray and capsule container, empty both, and install them again.

• Cause: The message does not disappear after the tray was emptied. This happens if the container was removed for less than 8 seconds. Remedy: Take out the tray for approximately 10 seconds and then install it again.

Cause: The drip tray is not engaged properly.

Remedy: Install the tray correctly, ensuring it is fully inserted.

Cause: The machine’s temperature is above the coffee temperature, likely after using the steam function.

Remedy: The machine must be allowed to cool down to coffee temperature. Open the hot water/steam valve as instructed in Chapter 11 to release pressure and cool the system.

• Message: READY / CALCIFIED. Cause: The machine must be de-scaled. Remedy: Carry out the de-scaling operation according to Chapter 17.

• Message: READY / FILTER. Cause: The Claris plus filter is used up and must be replaced. Remedy: Replace the filter according to Chapter 6.2.

Cause: The pyramid plate is soiled by coffee powder residues.

Remedy: Start a draw-off operation without a capsule in the machine to rinse the system.

If the coffee temperature is too low, it could be for one of two reasons:

• Cause: The machine is calcified. Remedy: De-scale the machine according to Chapter 17.

• Cause: It is the first coffee draw-off operation after a cold start. Remedy: Program the automatic switch-on time of the machine so it has time to pre-heat before you use it. You can also preheat your cups with hot water.

If you are not getting enough froth, check the following:

• Cause: The frothing aid is blocked. Remedy: Clean the frothing aid as described in Chapter 16.5.

• Cause: The frothing aid is in the wrong position. Remedy: Ensure the frothing aid is correctly positioned for frothing and draw off steam as per Chapter 10.
