• Cracking or popping: May occur when the defrost function is operating.
• Running water sound: This is the liquid refrigerant in the system and can be heard as a boiling or gurgling noise.
• Audible hissing sound: May be heard after closing the freezer door due to the pressure difference between warm and cooled air.
If this is your first refrigerator with an ice maker, you will also hear normal ice making sounds:
• Motor operation (low humming).
• Running water as the ice maker/water tank fills.
• Water valve opening and closing (hissing sound).
• Ice being loosened from the tray (cracking).

Why does the motor on my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B operate for long periods?
The motor on your FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B may run for extended periods due to several reasons:
• Hot weather: In high ambient temperatures, the refrigerator will run longer to maintain its set temperature.
• Frequent door openings: Each time the door is opened, cold air escapes and the refrigerator must run to cool down again.
• Large amount of food recently added: Adding a large quantity of warm food will require the motor to run longer to cool it.
To resolve this, minimize door openings to allow the temperature to stabilize.
Why are the storage compartments in my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B too warm?
If the storage compartments feel too warm, consider these causes:
• Incorrect Temperature Setting: The temperature may be set too high. Refer to the ‘Temperature control’ section to set a cooler temperature.
• Frequent Door Openings: Opening the doors frequently allows warm air in. Minimize door openings to allow the temperature to stabilize.
• Large Amount of Food Added: Adding a large amount of food at once will temporarily raise the temperature.
• Doors Not Sealing Properly: Check that the cabinet is level and that the door gasket seals are clean and sealing properly.
Why is food freezing in the refrigerator compartment of my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
If food is freezing in the fresh food compartment, it may be due to one of the following reasons:
• Incorrect Temperature Setting: The temperature control may be set too low (too cold). Refer to the ‘Temperature control’ section to select a warmer setting.
• Food Placement: Food placed directly in front of the cold air outlets can freeze. Move chill-sensitive foods away from the center back of the shelves.
Why is there water in the vegetable bins of my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
Condensation in the vegetable bins is formed by the water produced by fruit and vegetables. A small amount of condensation is normal and beneficial for storage. If there is excess water:
• Wipe out the water with a cloth.
• Set the humidity slide to the low humidity setting (the icon with fewer drips).
Why is the exterior cabinet of my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B warm?
It is perfectly normal for the exterior of the cabinet to feel warm. This is part of the normal refrigerator operation, designed to prevent condensation from forming on the outside of the appliance.
Why doesn’t the tray/bin slide in and out evenly on my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
If a tray or bin is not sliding smoothly, check for these issues:
• Packaging Trapped: Check to ensure no food or packaging is trapped behind the tray/bin.
• Runners Need Resetting: If the runners are not extending fully, they may need to be reset. Hold onto the sides of the tray/bin and extend the runners fully by using a firm pull. This will reset the runner mechanism.
Why is my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B operating inefficiently?
Inefficient operation can be caused by an accumulation of dust on or behind the rear compartment cover. This restricts airflow and reduces efficiency. Refer to the ‘Cleaning and caring for your refrigerator’ section for instructions on how to clean this area. If the problem persists, please contact Customer Care.
Why is my automatic ice maker not working on my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
If the automatic ice maker on your FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B is not producing ice, check the following:
• Ice Maker is Off: Make sure the ice maker has been turned on via the internal control panel.
• Bin Placement: Ensure the ice bin is in the correct position. For some models, the scoop should be on the right side. The ice bin must sit directly under the ice maker on the top left side of the freezer.
• Water Supply: Check that the water supply is turned on and connected.
• Freezer Compartment: Verify that the freezer compartment is working correctly.
• Water Pressure: Check for low water pressure.
• Water Line: Inspect the water line for any kinks or squashing.
• Filter: The water filter may be clogged and need replacing.
Why do my ice cubes have an odor or bad taste?
If your ice cubes have an unpleasant odor or taste, consider the following solutions:
• Old Cubes: Old ice cubes need to be discarded. Empty the bin and allow the ice maker to produce a fresh batch.
• Unsealed Food: Unsealed packages in the freezer can transmit odors. Ensure all food packaging is properly sealed.
• Cleaning: The interior of the freezer or the ice storage bin may need cleaning. Empty and wash the ice storage bin and clean the freezer interior.
• Incoming Water: The poor taste may be from your incoming water supply. The water filter may need changing, or a new filter may need to be installed.
Why is my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B slow to freeze ice cubes?
If your refrigerator is slow to produce ice, it could be for these reasons:
• Door Ajar: The freezer door may have been left ajar. Ensure the door is closed properly.
• Freezer Too Warm: The freezer compartment temperature may be too warm. Turn the temperature to a colder setting.
What causes wet or clumping ice in my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
Wet or clumping ice can be caused by several factors:
• Low water pressure.
• A blocked filter.
• Long or frequent freezer door openings.
• High ambient temperature.
• The ice bin being left out of the freezer for a length of time.
To fix, gently tap the ice with the scoop to unstick it. If large clumps have formed, empty the ice bin and make new ice.
Why is the filter warning light flashing on my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
A flashing filter warning light indicates that the water filter needs replacing. You should replace the filter as soon as possible to ensure water and ice quality.
Why is ice building up inside the freezer compartment of my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
Ice buildup inside the freezer is typically caused by the freezer door not closing tightly. Arrange the items in your freezer to ensure nothing is obstructing the door and preventing it from closing completely. You should also check and clean the door gasket seal to ensure it is making a proper seal.
Why doesn’t the ‘Ice Boost’ function seem to be increasing ice production?
If the ‘Ice Boost’ function is not noticeably increasing the rate of ice production, it could be due to:
• High Ambient Temperature: The room temperature is very warm, making it harder for the freezer to cool quickly.
• High Usage: The refrigerator is in high usage, with frequent door openings. This lets warm air in and slows the freezing process.
To improve performance, try to minimize door openings.
Why does the water from my dispenser have a poor taste or odor?
If the water has a poor taste or odor, it is likely because the refrigerator has not been used for an extended period, causing water in the lines to become stale. To fix this, dispense 4qt (4L) of water to flush the system and allow the fresh water supply to be replenished.
What should I do if the water dispenser on my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B does not work?
| Possible Cause | What To Do |
|---|---|
| Water supply turned off or not connected. | Turn the water on. |
| Supply line may be blocked. | Check the supply line for kinks or leaks. |
| Air in water system (on first installation). | To remove air, run 3qt (3L) of water through the dispenser. |
| Filter may be blocked. | Replace the filter. |
| ‘Dispenser Lock’ is activated. | Press and hold the lock button for 4 seconds to deactivate. |
| Water is frozen in the tank. | Increase the temperature to a warmer setting in the fresh food compartment and freezer. |
Why is the first glass of water from the dispenser warm?
The first glass of water may be warm if:
• The dispenser has not been used for an extended period. Discard the first glass of water dispensed.
• The chilled water tank capacity was used recently. Allow time for the water to cool.
Why do drips overflow the drip-shelf on my FISHER & PAYKEL ACTIVESMART RF170B?
Drips overflowing the drip-shelf can happen when there is air in the system or after a new filter is installed.
• If there is air trapped in the tank: Flush 3qt (3L) of water through the dispenser, stopping intermittently to allow the air to clear.
• If a new filter was just installed: Flush 4qt (4L) of water through the filter and then an additional 3qt (3L) through the dispenser.
Why has the water flow rate from the dispenser slowed down?
A slowed water flow rate is typically caused by a restricted (clogged) filter cartridge. You should replace the filter as soon as possible.
