What are the kickback safety precautions for the ECHO CS-8000 chainsaw?

WARNING! KICKBACK may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Tip contact in some cases may cause a lightning-fast reverse REACTION, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator. Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator. Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a chain saw user, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.

1. With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce or eliminate the element of surprise. Sudden surprise contributes to accidents.

2. Keep a good firm grip on the saw with both hands, the right hand on the rear handle, and the left hand on the front handle, when the engine is running. Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the chain saw handles. A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and maintain control of the saw. Don’t let go.

3. Make sure that the area in which you are cutting is free from obstructions. Do not let the nose of the guide bar contact a log, branch, or any other obstruction which could be hit while you are operating the saw.

4. Cut at high engine speeds.

5. Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.

6. Follow manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain.

7. Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the manufacturer or the equivalent.

What are the general safety precautions for operating the ECHO CS-8000 chainsaw?

1. Do not operate a chain saw with one hand! Serious injury to the operator, helpers, bystanders, or any combination of these persons may result from one-handed operation. A chain saw is intended for two-handed use.

2. Do not operate a chain saw when you are fatigued.

3. Use safety footwear; snug-fitting clothing; protective gloves; and eye, hearing, and head protection devices.

4. Use caution when handling fuel. Move the chain saw at least 10 feet (3 m) from the fueling point before starting the engine.

5. Do not allow other persons to be near the chain saw when starting or cutting with the chain saw. Keep bystanders and animals out of the work area.

6. Do not start cutting until you have a clear work area, secure footing, and a planned retreat path from the falling tree.

7. Keep all parts of your body away from the saw chain when the engine is running.

8. Before you start the engine, make sure that the saw chain is not contacting anything.

9. Carry the chain saw with the engine stopped, the guide bar and saw chain to the rear, and the muffler away from your body.

10. Do not operate a chain saw that is damaged, improperly adjusted, or not completely and securely assembled. Be sure that the saw chain stops moving when the throttle control trigger is released.

11. Shut off the engine before setting the chain saw down.

12. Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush and saplings because slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.

13. When cutting a limb that is under tension, be alert for springback so that you will not be struck when the tension in the wood fibers is released.

14. Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil or fuel mixture.

15. Operate the chain saw only in well-ventilated areas.

16. Do not operate a chain saw in a tree unless you have been specifically trained to do so.

17. All chain saw service, other than the items listed in the operator’s manual maintenance instructions, should be performed by competent chain saw service personnel.

18. When transporting your chain saw, use the appropriate guide bar scabbard.

19. Spark arrester mufflers approved to SAE Standard J335b are Standard on ECHO Chain saws to reduce the possibility of forest fires. Do not operate the chain saw with a loose or defective muffler. Do not remove the spark arrester screen.

How do I properly tension the chain on my ECHO CS-8000?

1. Turn the adjuster screw clockwise until the chain touches the bottom of the bar.

2. Hold the bar nose up and tighten the chain until there is no clearance between the bar and chain tie straps.

3. Tighten both nuts with the bar nose held up to eliminate clearance.

4. Pull the chain around the bar by hand. Loosen the adjustment if you feel tight spots.

5. Start the engine and run at low speed. Stop and readjust if necessary.

CAUTION:

• All adjustments should be made cold.

• Always wear gloves when working on chain.

• Do not operate with a loose chain.

What type of fuel and oil mixture should I use for the ECHO CS-8000?

GASOLINE: Use 89 Octane [(R+M)/2] gasoline or gasohol known to be good quality. Gasohol may contain maximum 10% ethyl (grain) alcohol or 15% MTBE (methyltertiary-butyl ether). Gasohol containing methyl (wood) alcohol is not approved.

TWO-STROKE OIL: Use 50:1 two-stroke ECHO oil only. Engine problems due to inadequate lubrication caused by failure to use 50:1 ECHO oil will void the warranty on your ECHO product.

MIXING: Mix oil and gasoline/gasohol according to the instructions on the ECHO oil label.

IMPORTANT: Stored fuel ages. Do not mix more fuel than you expect to use in thirty (30) days, ninety (90) days when a fuel stabilizer is added. Stored two-stroke fuel may separate. ALWAYS shake fuel container thoroughly before each use.

CAUTION: Whenever opening up the fuel tank, always loosen the cap very slowly and wait for the tank pressure to be equalized before removing the cap.

What kind of chain lubricant should I use for the ECHO CS-8000?

Proper lubrication of the chain while in operation reduces friction between the chain and the guide bar to a minimum and assures a longer service life.

• Use ECHO bar and chain oil of high quality for this purpose.

• Do not use used or reclaimed oil to avoid various oiler problems.

• When refueling, also refill chain oil.

How do I start a cold ECHO CS-8000 engine?

How do I start a warm ECHO CS-8000 engine?

1. Confirm there is fuel and chain oil in the tanks.

2. Slide the ignition switch to the front.

3. Pull the starter handle.

4. The choke may be used if necessary but be sure to push it back on the first firing sound.

What are the break-in instructions for a new ECHO CS-8000?

To assist in proper lubrication during the break-in of the unit, DO NOT readjust the high speed needle until at least two tanks of fuel have been used. This has been preset by the factory to 1-1 1/4 turns.

How do I properly operate my ECHO CS-8000 while it’s running?

• When the engine starts, keep it idling for a few minutes.

• Pull the throttle trigger gradually and increase the revolution of the engine.

• The chain starts running when the engine reaches 3,000 rpm.

• Confirm proper acceleration and lubrication of the chain and bar.

• Give several strokes to the manual oiler button to confirm its function as well.

• Do not run the engine at high speed unnecessarily.

How do I stop the engine on my ECHO CS-8000?

To stop the engine, release the throttle trigger and turn the stop switch back (to the STOP position).

NOTE: If the engine does not stop, pull the choke all the way out to stop the engine. Check and repair the stop switch before starting the engine again.

What are the basic cutting instructions for the ECHO CS-8000?

• The operation of a chain saw is a one-man job. After you have learned the basic techniques of using the saw, your best aid will be your own good common sense.

• The accepted way to hold the saw is to stand to the left of the saw with your left hand on the front handlebar and your right hand on the rear handle so you can operate the throttle trigger with your right index finger.

• Before attempting to fell a tree, cut some small logs or limbs. Become thoroughly familiar with the controls and the responses of the saw.

• Start the engine and see that it is running properly. Squeeze the trigger to open the throttle wide open and start the cut.

• If the chain is properly sharpened, the cutting should be relatively effortless. It is not necessary to press down hard to make the saw cut. Pushing the saw too hard will slow the engine and cutting will actually be more difficult.

CAUTION: Do not let the tip of the bar touch anything while the engine is running. At cutting speed, the chain is moving at a high rate of speed. Should the tip contact a limb or log while the chain is moving, the tip will be pushed upward with considerable force. This is known as kick-back. Avoid it!

How do I fell a tree with the ECHO CS-8000 chainsaw?

1. Decide the direction of fall. A falling tree can seriously damage anything it may hit.

2. Before cutting, clear the area around the tree. You need good footing and should be able to work the saw without hitting any obstacles.

3. Select a path of retreat. When the tree begins to fall, you should retreat away from the direction of fall at a 45-degree angle to avoid the trunk kicking back over the stump.

4. Begin the cut on the side to which the tree is to fall. Cut a notch about 1/3 of the way into the tree as shown.

5. Make the felling cut on the side opposite the notch and at a level about 2″ above the bottom of the notch. Do not cut through to the notch.

6. The remaining wood between the notch cut and felling cut (about 2″) will act as a hinge, guiding the tree in the desired direction.

7. When the tree starts to fall, kill the engine, place the saw on the ground, and make your retreat quickly.

For big trees (diameter exceeding twice the bar length):

• Start the notching cuts from one side and draw the saw through to the other side of the notch.

• Start the back cut on one side of the tree, pivoting the saw through to form the desired hinge on that side.

• Remove the saw for the second cut. Insert the saw in the first cut very carefully so as not to cause kickback. The final cut is made by drawing the saw forward in the cut to reach the hinge.

What are the guidelines for limbing and bucking with the ECHO CS-8000?

Limbing:

Limbing a fallen tree is much the same as bucking. Never limb on the tree that you are standing. When limbing, be cautious and careful of the tip touching other limbs. Always use both hands.

Bucking:

Bucking is the sawing of a log or fallen tree into smaller pieces.

• Keep both hands on the handles at all times.

• Support logs if possible.

• When cutting on a slope or hillside, always stand uphill.

• Keep in mind that the wood is heavy and that it will bend and pinch the saw if improperly supported. The trunk will weaken at the point where you make the cut.

• If you make the cut with the tree on the ground, don’t let the saw’s chain dig into the earth; it is harmful for the saw, and you stand a good chance of being struck by flying debris. To cut the trunk, use the bucking and two-cut sequence shown. The first cut should be no deeper than one-third the trunk diameter.

• Don’t cut with the saw overhead or the bar in a vertical position. If the saw should kick back you may not have good enough control to prevent possible injury.

What kickback safety features are recommended for the ECHO CS-8000?

The following features are recommended for this model as Kickback Safety Features:

Double Guard Low Kick Type Guide Bar or Asymmetrical Low Kick Type Guide Bar: Your saw can be equipped with either of these bars. The asymmetrical low kick type guide bar must be mounted with the reduced radius section of the nose on top. Incorrect installation will result in increased kickback potential.

Low Kick Guard Link Type Saw Chain: This type of chain must be maintained correctly, following the instructions for “SETTING THE CHAIN”.

Front Hand Guard: The front hand guard must be installed correctly and kept in good condition.

Chain Brake: The chain brake is available as a standard feature. It must be maintained correctly, following the instruction “CORRECT USE OF CHAIN BRAKE”.

WARNING: This chain saw is capable of severe kickback that could result in serious injury to the user. Do not operate this chain saw unless you have extraordinary cutting needs and experience and specialized training for dealing with kickback. ECHO chain saws with significantly reduced kickback potential are available.

How do I perform maintenance on the carburetor of my ECHO CS-8000?

• Do not adjust the carburetor unless necessary.

• After the break-in period, if carburetor adjustment is necessary, proceed with initial adjustments as follows:

– Low speed needle (L): 1 3/8 ~ 2 1/8 turns

– High speed needle (H): 2 1/8 ~ 3 1/8 turns

– Screw in the needles until lightly seated and then back them out as indicated above.

• Turn the idle adjustment screw clockwise until the chain begins to turn, then back the screw out 1/2 turn.

CAUTION:

• After the break-in period, always maintain a high speed needle setting between 7/8 – 1 1/4 turns (depending on altitude and climatic conditions), as a too-lean adjustment may cause engine damage.

• Maximum no-load speed with a properly tensioned bar and chain after break-in should not exceed 13,000 rpm’s.

How do I clean the air filter on the ECHO CS-8000?

• Check the air filter before every use.

• Loosen the thumb bolt, and remove the air cleaner cover and filter.

• Brush off dust lightly, or wash it in a suitable cleaning fluid if necessary.

• Dry it completely before installation.

How do I maintain the fuel strainer on my ECHO CS-8000?

• Check periodically. Do not allow dust to enter the fuel tank.

• A clogged strainer will cause difficulty in starting the engine or abnormalities in engine performance.

• Pick up the fuel strainer through the fuel inlet port with a piece of steel wire or the like.

• When the strainer is dirty, wash it in a suitable cleaning fluid.

• When the inside of the fuel tank is dirty, it can be cleaned by rinsing the tank out with a suitable cleaning fluid.

How do I maintain the guide bar on my ECHO CS-8000?

• Clean before using.

• Clean the groove of the guide bar with, for example, a small screwdriver.

• Clean oil holes with a wire.

• Reverse the guide bar periodically.

• Clean the sprocket, clutch, and bar mount area before installing.

When should I replace the sprocket on my ECHO CS-8000?

• A damaged sprocket will cause premature damage or wear of the saw chain.

• When the sprocket has worn out 0.5 mm (.020 in.) or more, replace it.

• Check the sprocket when you install a new chain. Replace it if it is worn.

How do I adjust the automatic oiler on the ECHO CS-8000?

• The discharge volume of the automatic oiler is adjusted to 8 cc/min. approx. at 7,000 rpm, prior to shipment from the factory.

• To increase the delivery volume, turn the adjusting screw clockwise. When the screw touches the stopper and stops, this position indicates the maximum discharge volume (15-16 cc/min. at 7,000 rpm).

• To decrease the delivery volume, turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise.

• Do not turn the adjusting screw beyond the max. or min. limit of volume adjustment.

How do I maintain the oil strainer on my ECHO CS-8000?

• Check periodically. Do not allow dust to enter the oil tank.

• A clogged oil strainer will affect the normal lubricating system.

• Pick it up through the oil filling hole with a piece of steel wire or the like.

• If the strainer is dirty, wash it in gasoline.

• When the inside of the tank gets dirty, it can be cleaned by rinsing the tank out with gasoline.

What are the spark plug specifications and maintenance for the ECHO CS-8000?

• Check periodically.

• The standard spark gap is 0.6-0.7mm (.024-.028 in.). Correct the spark gap if it is wider or narrower than the standard gap.

• Fastening torque = 145-155 kg-cm (125-135 in-lb).

How do I maintain the cylinder fins on my ECHO CS-8000?

• Check periodically.

• Clogged fins will result in poor engine cooling.

• Remove dirt and dust from between the fins to let cooling air pass easily.

How do I properly sharpen the saw chain on my ECHO CS-8000?

Important points for proper maintenance of saw chain:

• Keep the cutters sharp at all times.

• Keep the left and the right cutters properly aligned. Blunt or irregular cutters will result in poor cutting performance, increased vibration, and premature breakage of the saw chain.

• Keep the lower edge of the drive link sharp to remove sawdust from the groove of the guide bar.

• After filing, soak the chain in oil and wash away filings completely before use.

• If the chain becomes soiled with resin, clean it with kerosene and soak it in oil.

Sharpening Procedure:

For setting saw chains, a round file (5.5 mm ø: 7/32″) and a flat file are used. A file holder is recommended to keep the correct position and angle.

1. Sharpening Cutters:

• Use a round file. Push the file as shown, maintaining a 35° angle relative to the bar.

• Hold the file handle 10° low.

• One-fifth (1/5) of the file’s diameter should remain above the cutter edge.

2. Adjusting Depth Gauge:

• Place the depth gauge tool firmly on the guide bar so that the depth gauge protrudes.

• File the top of the depth gauge with a flat file until it is flat with the top of the depth gauge tool.

• Be sure to round off the front edge of the depth gauge. The correct depth gauge setting is 0.77mm (.030 in.).

Properly Filed Cutter Angles (for Oregon 76LG/72LG chain):

• Top plate angle: 30°

• Side plate angle: 75°

• Top plate cutting angle: 60°

How do I troubleshoot if my ECHO CS-8000 will not start or is difficult to start?

When the engine does not function properly, first check these three points:

1. Is engine compression adequate?

2. Is the fuel system in good condition and is enough fuel being supplied?

3. Is the electrical system in good condition and is the spark plug operating normally?

If the engine cranks but does not start, follow these steps:

1. Check Fuel to Carburetor:

• If fuel is not reaching the carburetor, check for a clogged fuel strainer (clean), clogged fuel pipe (clean), insufficient suction (make sufficient), or an out-of-order carburetor (disassemble and check).

2. Check Fuel to Cylinder:

• If fuel reaches the carburetor but not the cylinder, the carburetor may be out of order (disassemble and check).

3. Check for Spark:

• If there is no spark at the high tension cord end, check for a defective C.D.I. module (remove and replace), defective ignition coil (remove and replace), defective wire connection (reconnect), defective high-tension cord connection (repair as necessary), or a grounded switch (switch on).

• If there is a spark at the cord but not at the plug, check for an insulator crack (replace plug), incorrect spark gap (adjust), carbon buildup (clean or replace), or a fuel-fouled plug (clean or replace).

4. Check Starting Procedures:

• If there is fuel and spark, ensure starting procedures are correct (start correctly).

5. Check Carburetor and Other Issues:

• If the engine still does not keep running, check for lean needle settings (readjust), incorrect metering lever spring (readjust), defective fuel pump diaphragm (replace), or a clogged fuel passage (disassemble and clean).

• For acceleration or low speed issues, check for fuel leaks (retighten screws), a non-working air valve/fuel cap (replace or clean), or a non-operating fuel pump (check impulse drilling).

• If the carburetor overflows, check for a clogged inlet needle valve (clean) or incorrectly placed metering lever spring (correct).

• If the muffler is sticky with fuel, the mixture is too rich. Start the engine several times with the choke fully open and run at fast idle until it does not smoke.

If Engine Does Not Crank:

• Check for damaged bearings, seized piston/cylinder, worn crankshaft, or a crankshaft contacting the crankcase. These issues require disassembly and replacement of parts.

What should I do if my ECHO CS-8000 engine runs but the chain doesn’t cut well?

If engine speed is insufficient:

Engine overheated: Check for improper fuel (use correct mix), defective spark plug (replace), clogged cooling fins (clean), or excessive carbon deposits (disassemble and remove).

Firing function defective: Check for damaged/fouled plug (replace or clean) or poor combustion due to defective wiring (check wiring).

Carburetor defective: Check for incorrect high-speed needle setting (readjust), carburetor overflow (refer to starting issues), or a clogged air cleaner (clean as necessary).

Other troubles: Check for insufficient compression (disassemble, check, replace), worn cylinder plating (replace cylinder), clogged exhaust port (clean), or a throttle that is not fully open (readjust).

If engine speed is sufficient:

Chain does not cut clean: Check for incorrect chain tension (adjust), wrongly set chain (set correctly), or incorrect depth gauge setting (readjust).

Chain stops (Clutch slips): The saw may be pressed too firmly against the tree (press lightly) or the clutch shoe may be worn out (replace).

Chain poorly lubricated: Check for no oil in the tank (refill), incorrect oil delivery (adjust), oil contaminated with dust (rinse tank and fill with new oil), or inappropriate oil viscosity (use oil with correct viscosity for the season).

How should I prepare my ECHO CS-8000 for storage?

• Inspect and adjust every part of the chain saw. Completely clean every part, and repair, if necessary.

• Apply a thin coating of oil on metal parts to prevent rust.

• Remove the chain and guide bar, apply sufficient oil coating and wrap them up in plastic.

• Drain the fuel tank, pull the starter slowly a few times to drain fuel from the carburetor.

• Pour a small amount of clean motor oil into the spark plug hole, pull the starter and crank the engine until the TOP DEAD CENTER is reached.

• Store in a dry area, free from dust.

How does the chain brake work on the ECHO CS-8000 and how do I use it?

Function:

• The chain brake is designed to stop the chain instantly in the event of kickback (e.g., when the bar nose hits another tree) or improper thrust cutting.

• When the lever is pushed forward, the chain brake engages and stops the chain.

• To release the brake, pull the lever fully back toward the operator.

Operation:

• Set the lever in the released position (pulled back) before starting to cut.

• If the brake is tripped by a kickback reaction, the chain will stop. Immediately release the throttle to avoid possible damage to the engine or clutch.

• Do not attempt to start or operate the engine with the brake engaged.

Testing the Brake:

1. Start the engine on a solid level surface and run at a fast idle until warm.

2. Hold the saw firmly by the handles and accelerate the engine to a fast idle.

3. Slowly operate the chain brake lever while holding the saw firmly on the ground. When the brake lever trips, the chain should stop. Immediately release the throttle trigger.

CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW THE SAW TO TIP FORWARD IN ORDER TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE CHAIN. If the chain does not stop immediately, return the saw to your authorized Echo dealer for repair.

How do I clean and adjust the chain brake on my ECHO CS-8000?

Cleaning:

• If the chain brake functions incorrectly, remove the sprocket guard and clean the chain brake thoroughly.

• If the chain brake does not function correctly even after cleaning, readjust the chain brake tension.

• When the brake band is considerably used and/or deformed, replace it with a new one.

Readjusting Chain Brake Tension:

• Turn the clockwise adjusting screw on top of the sprocket guard to adjust the chain brake tension.

• Care should be taken, as if the adjusting screw is turned more than required, the brake band tension will be excessively tight and the saw chain cannot run smoothly.

• If the adjusting screw is wrongly turned counterclockwise and the screw head appears over the surface, turn it back clockwise until seated and then screw it out three turns for the initial set.

NOTE:

• At all times, confirm whether the brake works properly before each work.

• If clogged with wood chips, the function of the brake deteriorates a little. Always keep the device clean.

• Do not increase engine revolution while the chain brake is engaged.

• The chain brake is used only in emergencies. Do not use it unless absolutely necessary.

• When using the throttle lock at starting, keep the chain brake in the brake position. After starting the engine, release the brake immediately.

• Never test the brake in an area where gasoline fumes are present.
