Before operation, a complete check of the unit must be performed:

Check the unit for loose/missing nuts, bolts, and screws. Tighten and/or replace as needed.

Inspect fuel lines, tank, and the area around the carburetor for fuel leaks. DO NOT operate the unit if leaks are found.

Inspect guards for damage and ensure they are securely in place. Replace if the guard is damaged or missing.

How can I reduce the risks of vibration-related or repetitive stress injuries when using the ECHO PAS-211?

To reduce the risk of Vibration and Cold related issues (Raynaud’s Phenomenon):

Keep your body warm, especially the head, neck, feet, ankles, hands, and wrists.

Maintain good blood circulation by performing vigorous arm exercises during frequent work breaks and by not smoking.

Limit the hours of operation.

If you experience discomfort, redness, and swelling of the fingers followed by whitening and loss of feeling, consult your physician before further exposure to cold and vibration.

How do I assemble an attachment to the ECHO PAS-211 power head?

1. Set the Power Head/Shaft Assembly on a level surface.

2. Pull the locator pin (A) and rotate it counter-clockwise 1/4 turn to the lock-out position.

3. Carefully fit the attachment lower drive shaft assembly into the coupler (B) to the decal assembly line (C), making sure that the inner lower drive shaft engages into the upper drive shaft mount. The lower bearing housing and head assembly must be in line with the engine.

4. Rotate the locator pin (A) 1/4 turn clockwise to engage the lower shaft hole (D). Ensure the locator pin is fully engaged by gently twisting the lower drive shaft. The locator pin should snap flush in the coupler. Full engagement will prevent further shaft rotation.

5. Secure the lower shaft assembly to the coupler by tightening the clamping knob (E).


How do I install the front handle on the ECHO PAS-211?

Tools Required: Screwdriver

Parts Required: Front Handle, Handle Support, Four (4) 5mm x 35mm screws with captivated washers, four (4) 5mm nuts.

1. Assemble the handle support to the front handle on the drive shaft with the screws and nuts.

2. Stand in a comfortable operating position with the attachment assembled and move the front handle to a comfortable operating position. Tighten the handle screws.


What are the fuel and oil requirements for the ECHO PAS-211?

Gasoline: Use 89 Octane [(R+M)/2] (mid-grade or higher) gasoline known to be good quality. Gasoline may contain up to 10% Ethanol (grain alcohol) or 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether). Gasoline containing methanol (wood alcohol) is NOT approved.

Two-Stroke Oil: A two-stroke engine oil meeting ISO-L-EGD (ISO/CD 13738) and J.A.S.O. FC Standards must be used. Echo brand Premium 50:1 oil meets these standards. Engine problems due to inadequate lubrication caused by failure to use an ISO-L-EGD and J.A.S.O. FC certified oil will void the two-stroke engine warranty.

Mixing: Follow the directions on the oil container to mix the fuel at a 50:1 ratio.

Fuel Storage: Stored fuel ages. Do not mix more fuel than you expect to use in thirty (30) days, or ninety (90) days when a fuel stabilizer is added. Stored two-stroke fuel may separate; ALWAYS shake the fuel container thoroughly before each use.


How do I start a cold engine on the ECHO PAS-211?

1. Stop Switch: Move the stop switch button (A) forward away from the STOP position to the Start/Run position.

2. Choke Lever: Move the choke lever (B) to the “Cold Start” position.

3. Primer Bulb: Pump the primer bulb (C) until fuel is visible and flows freely in the clear fuel tank return line. Pump the bulb an additional 4 or 5 times.

4. Initial Pull: Lay the unit on a flat, clear area. Firmly grasp the throttle grip with your left hand and fully depress the throttle trigger to the wide-open position. Rapidly pull the starter handle/rope (D) until the engine fires (maximum five pulls).

5. Start and Warm-up: After the engine fires or after five pulls, move the choke lever (B) back to the “Run” position. Hold the throttle trigger fully depressed and pull the starter handle/rope until the engine starts and runs. Release the throttle trigger and allow the unit to warm up at idle for several minutes.

6. Operate: After the engine has warmed up, gradually depress the throttle trigger to increase engine RPM to operating speed.


How do I start a warm engine on the ECHO PAS-211?

1. Stop Switch: Move the stop switch button (A) away from the STOP position to the Start/Run position.

2. Primer Bulb: Pump the primer bulb (C) until fuel is visible and flows freely in the clear fuel tank return line.

3. Starting: Lay the unit on a flat, clear area and pull the recoil starter handle/rope (D) until the engine fires.

How do I clean or replace the air filter on my ECHO PAS-211?

1. Close the choke (Cold Start Position). This prevents dirt from entering the carburetor throat when the air filter is removed. Brush accumulated dirt from the air cleaner area.

2. Remove the air cleaner cover. Clean and inspect the element for damage. If the element is fuel-soaked and very dirty, replace it.

3. If the element can be cleaned and reused, be certain it still fits the cavity in the air cleaner cover and is installed with the original side out.


How do I replace the fuel filter on my ECHO PAS-211?

1. Use a clean rag to remove loose dirt from around the fuel cap and empty the fuel tank.

2. Use a “fuel line hook” (a length of wire with one end bent into a hook) to pull the fuel line and filter from the tank.

3. Remove the filter from the line and install the new filter.

1. Remove the spark plug and check for fouling, worn, and rounded center electrode.

How do I clean the cooling system on my ECHO PAS-211?

To maintain proper engine operating temperatures, cooling air must pass freely through the cylinder fin area. Overheating and engine seizure can occur if air intakes are blocked or if dust and grass build up on the cylinder.

1. Remove the spark plug lead.

2. Loosen the outer throttle cable nut (A) and remove the cable from the engine housing bracket slot.

3. Remove the two (2) engine cover screws at the top of the starter.

4. Remove the screw and armrest (B). Lift the cover (C) from the engine.

5. Use a wooden stick or brush to remove dirt from the cylinder fins.

6. Remove grass and leaves from the grid between the recoil starter and the fuel tank.

7. Assemble components in reverse order. When installing the cover, be certain the tab of the metal deflector shield is in the slot of the engine cover.


How do I clean the spark arrestor screen on my ECHO PAS-211?

1. Remove the engine cover. (See “Cleaning Cooling System” instructions).

2. Remove the spark arrestor screen cover (A), gasket (B), screen holder (C), and screen (D) from the muffler body.

3. Clean carbon deposits from the screen and muffler components. Be careful not to damage the catalytic body when cleaning.

4. Replace the screen if it is cracked, plugged, or has holes burned through.

5. Assemble components in reverse order.


How do I adjust the carburetor on my ECHO PAS-211?

Engine Break-In: New engines must be operated for a minimum duration of two tanks of fuel for break-in before carburetor adjustments are made.

Idle Speed Adjustment:

1. Before adjusting, clean or replace the air filter and spark arrester screen.

2. For trimmers, the line must be extended to the cut-off knife.

3. Start the engine and run for several minutes to reach operating temperature.

4. Stop the engine. Turn the HI speed needle (A) CCW (counter-clockwise) to the stop.

5. Start the engine and turn the “idle” speed adjustment screw (B) CW (clockwise) until the cutting attachment begins to turn, then turn the screw CCW (counter-clockwise) until the attachment stops turning. Turn the screw CCW an additional 1/4 turn.

6. Accelerate to full throttle for 2-3 seconds to clear excess fuel from the engine, then return to idle. Check for a smooth transition from idle to full throttle. If the engine stops or stalls after a full warm-up, return the unit to your authorized ECHO dealer for repair.

7. Check HI speed RPM at W.O.T. (Wide Open Throttle). It should be set to 9500 – 11000 RPM as per the “Specifications” on page 12 of the manual.

8. Check the idle speed and reset if necessary. It should be set to 2400 – 3000 RPM.

WARNING: When carburetor adjustment is completed, the cutting attachment should not turn at idle, otherwise serious personal injury may result.


How do I lubricate the drive shaft on the ECHO PAS-211?

The drive shaft must be lubricated with high-temperature automotive grease every 25 hours of operation to prevent overheating and failure.

1. Loosen the clamping knob (A).

2. Pull the locator pin (B) and rotate it 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to the lockout position.

3. Remove the attachment.

4. Remove the coupler from the upper drive shaft assembly by loosening the clamping screw (C) and removing the set screw (D).

5. Remove the upper flex cable, wipe it clean, and apply a thin coating of 1/2 oz. (15ml) of grease.

6. Install the cable. Make sure that the flex cable engages into the clutch mount. Install the coupler, engaging the square adapter onto the flex cable end.

7. Install the set screw (D) and tighten the clamping screw (C).

How do I prepare my ECHO PAS-211 for long-term storage (over 30 days)?

1. Store the unit in a dry, dust-free place, out of the reach of children. Store with the drive shaft housing in an upright or horizontal position to prevent grease leakage.

2. Place the stop switch (A) in the “OFF” position.

3. Remove accumulation of grease, oil, dirt, and debris from the exterior of the unit.

4. Perform all periodic lubrication and services that are required.

5. Tighten all the screws and nuts.

6. Drain the fuel tank completely and pull the recoil starter handle several times to remove fuel from the carburetor.

7. Remove the spark plug and pour 7 cc (1/4 oz.; 1/2 tablespoon) of fresh, clean, two-stroke engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole.

A. Place a clean cloth over the spark plug hole.

B. Pull the recoil starter handle 2-3 times to distribute the oil inside the engine.

C. Observe the piston location through the spark plug hole. Pull the recoil starter handle slowly until the piston reaches the top of its travel and leave it there.

8. Install the spark plug (do not connect the ignition cable).
