• Unplug and disconnect external antennas during lightning storms.

• Do not remove cover [or back].

• Refer servicing to qualified service personnel.

The battery compartment is on the back of the radio. To install batteries:

1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing the two tabs and pulling up.

2. Install 6 fresh, new alkaline D size batteries, all of the same brand and type.

3. Ensure correct polarity by following the diagram inside the battery compartment.

To prevent battery acid leakage, which is not covered by warranty, never install batteries of different brands or types, and never mix old batteries with new ones. If you are not using the radio for more than 30 days, remove the batteries.

The battery level indicator is located in the upper left corner of the display.

• When batteries are full, “■■” will be displayed in the LCD.

• If ” ” flashes, it indicates that batteries are low and the radio will soon turn off automatically.

Replace the batteries if the indicator shows one bar or if the sound becomes distorted.

Plug the supplied AC adapter into the socket on the left side of the radio. When the AC adapter is plugged in, the full power level will show in the upper left corner of the display, looking like a full battery. If you need to replace the adapter, use one with a 9 Volt DC output, negative polarity, 500 milliampere, and a plug with a 5.5 millimeter outer diameter and 2.1 millimeter inner diameter.

Yes, you can power the radio from a car or boat using a DC to DC converter. The required output is: 9 Volt DC, negative polarity, outer diameter 5.5 millimeter; inner diameter 2.1 millimeter.

To turn the radio on, press the red POWER & SLEEP button on the front top right corner of the radio. To turn the radio off, press the POWER & SLEEP button again.

To activate or change the sleep timer, turn the radio on and press the POWER & SLEEP button continuously. With each press, the display will show the following sleep options: 90, 60, 45, 30, 15, 10, 5, or 1 minute. The radio will play for the specified length of time and then automatically shut off. The sleep timer symbol will show in the display.

To deactivate the sleep timer, press the POWER & SLEEP button continuously until ‘on’ appears in the display. When ‘on’ appears, the sleep timer is disengaged.

If batteries are installed in the unit and it is being powered by its AC adapter, the radio will automatically switch to battery power if there is an AC power failure.

To lock all of the keys and buttons, press and hold the LOCK button (at the front top of the radio) until you see a key symbol appear in the top middle of the display. To unlock, press and hold the same button for 2 seconds.

To quickly tune across a band, press the Q.TUNE button. This will save you time when going to a frequency on the other end of the band. This feature works on AM, FM, and Shortwave.

Located above the main tuning knob, these buttons control the tuning speed:

• STOP: Locks the tuning dial. Press it again to unlock.

• SLOW: Provides slow, fine-tuning.

• FAST: Provides fast tuning to move across the band quickly.

The ANTENNA DX/LOCAL switch is on the right side of the radio.

• If a station you are listening to is very strong and sounds distorted, turn this switch to the LOCAL position.

• Otherwise, leave it on DX, which stands for maximum distance, to improve reception of weaker stations.

The FM frequency range is from 87.5 to 108 MHz. To tune FM stations:

1. Fully extend the telescopic antenna and turn on the radio.

2. Place the top BANDWIDTH control to the MONO or STEREO position. STEREO is only needed when using headphones and appears on the display. FM mono provides a better signal and noise ratio.

3. Tune in the station using the TUNING knob, by pressing the UP/DOWN buttons, or by pressing and holding the UP/DOWN button for one second to engage auto tuning.

BASS/TREBLE KNOBS: Use these knobs to control the bass and treble response of the radio’s speaker system.

AM RF GAIN KNOB:

• For AM (MW) stations, this knob should be set to or near position 5. Increase the gain for weak stations, and decrease it for extremely strong stations.

• For Shortwave stations, place this control to maximum gain and decrease it as necessary.

To tune AM (MW) stations:

1. Turn on the radio.

2. Place the top BANDWIDTH switch to the W (wide) or N (narrow) position. Use WIDE if there is no interference, and NARROW if interference is present.

3. Place the bottom BANDWIDTH switch into the MW position.

4. Place the AM/SW RF GAIN switch into the 5 position, adjusting higher if necessary.

5. Tune in the station using the TUNING knob, the UP/DOWN buttons, or by pressing and holding the UP/DOWN buttons for one second to start auto tuning.

To change the tuning steps:

The radio is set to 9 KHz tuning by default. To change to 10 KHz steps, open the battery compartment. Move the switch located on the ridge between the upper and lower set of batteries from 9 KHz to 10 KHz. Then, press the reset button with a paper clip.

The SW frequency range is from 1711 to 29999 KHz. To tune SW stations:

1. Turn on the radio.

2. Place the upper BANDWIDTH switch in the W (wide) or N (narrow) position.

3. Place the lower switch into SW1, SW2, or SW3.

4. Place the AM/SW RF GAIN control into the 10 position; decrease if necessary.

5. Tune in the station with the TUNING knob, by pressing the UP/DOWN button, or by pressing and holding the UP/DOWN button for one second to engage auto tuning.

Tune to these frequency ranges for the best results. The radio can also tune between these ranges.

To get the best results with shortwave reception, consider the following tips:

• During the day, frequencies above 13 MHz are usually best.

• At night, frequencies below 13 MHz are usually best.

• Around sunset and sunrise, the entire shortwave range may be good.

• Getting very close to a window and holding the radio improves shortwave reception.

To store a station:

1. Tune to the station you want to store.

2. Press and release the T.SET button. You will see ‘Preset’ with a number flash on the right side of the display.

3. Press the UP or DOWN buttons repeatedly to find the ‘Preset’ number you want to store it in.

4. A quick press of the T.SET button will finalize the entry.

To retrieve a stored station:

Press the PRESET button continuously to cycle through the stations that have been stored. The frequency and the ‘Preset’ number will show on the display.

Note: A station cannot be erased from memory. To replace a preset, simply store another station over it.

To change between 12-hour and 24-hour mode:

Turn the radio off, then press and hold the UP button for 5 seconds.

To set the clock time:

These steps must be done quickly, or the time set mode will exit.

1. Turn the radio off.

2. Press and hold the T.SET button until the hour starts flashing.

3. Turn the tuning knob or press the UP button to set the hour.

4. Quick press the DOWN button to make the minutes flash, then turn the tuning knob to set the minutes.

5. Quick press the T.SET button to finalize the entry.

The radio has two alarms, Timer A and Timer B. To set an alarm:

1. Turn the radio off.

2. Press and hold the TIMER A or TIMER B button until the hour flashes.

3. Turn the tuning knob or press the UP button to set the hour.

4. Quick press the DOWN button to make the minutes flash, then turn the tuning knob to set the minutes.

5. Quick press whichever button you are using (TIMER A or TIMER B) to finalize the entry.

1. Press and release the TIMER A or TIMER B button. ‘Timer A’ or ‘Timer B’ will flash in the display.

2. While it is flashing, press the ALARM button over and over to cycle through the options:

• Bell icon: Activates the alarm with a beeping sound.

• Speaker icon: Activates the alarm to wake you up to the last radio station you were tuned to. Set the volume to a level you want to hear.

• Nothing: If no icon is selected, the alarm will be deactivated.

To delay the alarm, press the SNOOZE button when the alarm turns on. Once pressed, the alarm will activate again in 5 minutes. This can be repeated up to 4 times.

These 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) stereo sockets are located on the right side of the radio.

• Line-In: An external audio device (like an MP3 player) can be played through the radio’s speaker by connecting an AUX line from the device into this socket.

• Line-Out: This socket can be used to feed audio to amplified external speakers.

• Earphone Jack: This jack can be used with stereo headphones using a 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) plug. FM sound is in stereo if the signal is sent in stereo and the ST position is selected with the BANDWIDTH switch.

The radio has external antenna connections on the back and a selection switch on the right side.

• FM/SW EXT. ANT. socket: This F-type socket is on the back of the radio and is for antennas fed with 50 or 75 ohm coaxial cable, such as dipoles. It can also be used for long wire antennas.

• MW EXT. ANT. socket: This is a 500 ohm impedance socket for use with long wire antennas for medium wave reception.

• ANT. SENS SWITCH (EXT or INT): This switch on the right side of the radio enables the use of either the internal (INT) or external (EXT) antennas for FM or SW reception.

Located on the back of the radio, this F-type socket provides access to an amplitude modulated intermediate frequency output. It can be used for receiving DRM signals or for other types of radio frequency experimentation.

LIGHT BUTTON (under LOCK button): Press this button to light the display for a few seconds. If you are using the AC adapter, pressing the button for 3 seconds will permanently light the display.

KEY LIGHT SWITCH (right side of radio): Flip this switch to ON to make the keys light up when they are pressed. Flip it to OFF to turn off this feature.

If the radio malfunctions or doesn’t work properly, insert a paper clip into the reset hole on the front lower right side of the radio. Make sure the paper clip is inserted until the display reappears.
