How do I set up my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 using Method One: Quick WPS Setup?

This method is recommended if your router has a WPS button.

Step 1. Plug your Range Extender into an available outlet near your wireless router. Wait until the Status LED is blinking amber, which may take up to 3 minutes.

Step 2. Press the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button on your wireless router for 3 seconds. Check for the WPS light on your router and ensure it is blinking. If it does not blink, see the important note below.

IMPORTANT: WPS may be disabled on some routers or modems. If the WPS Status LED on your router or modem does not start blinking after you press the WPS button, try again and hold it a little longer. If it still does not blink, STOP and configure your Range Extender using Method Two: D-Link Wi-Fi Setup.

Step 3. Once you confirm the WPS light is blinking on your router, within one minute, press the WPS button on your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 Range Extender for 2-3 seconds. The Status LED should begin to blink green.

Step 4. When the Status LED turns solid green (this may also take up to 3 minutes), it indicates that your Range Extender is successfully connected to your wireless router. You can now unplug the extender and move it to a location between your router and the area where you want improved wireless coverage.

Note: If the Status LED on your Range Extender does not turn solid green after the WPS setup, try resetting the unit and attempt the WPS setup again. If it still fails, use Method Two.

After moving the extender, if the signal strength indicator shows a single amber bar or if the LED does not turn solid green within 3 minutes, move the extender to a wall outlet closer to your wireless router.

How do I set up my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 using Method Two: D-Link Wi-Fi Setup?

Use this method if your wireless router or access point does not have a WPS button.

Step 1. Search for “D-Link Wi-Fi” on the App Store or Google Play and download the D-Link Wi-Fi App to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Step 2. Once the app is installed, tap the D-Link Wi-Fi icon on your mobile device. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Step 3. When prompted to scan the setup QR Code, scan the QR Code located on the Quick Install Card that came with your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820.

Your setup is now complete.

How do I connect my wireless devices to the D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 after it has been set up?

Step 1. From your wireless device, go to Wi-Fi Settings to see the list of available wireless networks.

If you used Quick WPS Setup (Method One):

• The Wi-Fi network name (SSID) will be your router’s SSID with “-EXT” added to the end (e.g., YourRouterSSID-EXT).

• The Wi-Fi password will be the same as your main router’s Wi-Fi password.

If you used D-Link Wi-Fi Setup (Method Two):

• Use the SSID and Wi-Fi Password you specified during the app setup process.

Step 2. Select the extended network name and enter the password. Your device is now connected to your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 Range Extender. To connect additional devices, repeat Step 1.

What is the SmartConnect feature on the D-LINK EXO DAP-1820?

By default, SmartConnect is enabled on the D-LINK EXO DAP-1820. This feature automatically steers your connected devices to the optimal wireless band (2.4GHz or 5GHz) based on current network traffic. When SmartConnect is enabled, you will only see one wireless network name (SSID) broadcast from your Range Extender.

Why can’t I connect my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 to my wireless router, or why does my wireless connection drop?

1. Verify that your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 is within the range of your wireless router. Try moving it to a location closer to the router and check if the Status LED is solid green.

2. Be aware that when extending a wireless signal, devices connected to the Range Extender will not get the same speed or throughput as when connected directly to the router.

How can I change the wireless settings on my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820?

Step 1. Open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari) and go to http://dlinkap.local./

Step 2. At the login screen, enter your Admin Password. If you used the WPS Setup method, the password is blank by default, so just leave it empty. Click Log in.

Step 3. Navigate to Settings > Extender.

Step 4. In this section, you can enter a new Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and modify the security (Wi-Fi password) settings as needed.

Step 5. Click Save to apply the changes.

Note: After changing the Wi-Fi Network name, the device you are currently using will be disconnected from the Range Extender. You will need to go to your device’s Wi-Fi Settings and connect to the D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 using the new network name and password.

Where is the best place to position my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 for optimal performance?

A Range Extender only works as well as the signal it is extending. For the best performance, place your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 in a location between your router and your wireless dead zone. Ensure it is placed in an area where the Wi-Fi signal from your router is still strong.

You can use the Smart Signal Indicator on the D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 to find a location with a strong signal. The more bars that are lit on the signal indicator, the stronger the Wi-Fi signal is in that location.

What should I do if I forgot the Admin password for my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 or need to reset it to factory defaults?

Step 1. To reset your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 back to its factory default settings, press and hold the reset button on the bottom of the extender using a paper clip. Release the button after a minimum of 10 seconds. The Status light will turn red.

Note: This process will erase all your current settings.

Step 2. After the reset is complete, you will need to set up your Range Extender again using your preferred method (WPS or D-Link Wi-Fi Setup).

What can I do if the WPS setup for my D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 isn’t working?

WPS may be disabled on some Routers or Modems. If the WPS Status LED on your Router or Modem does not start blinking when you have pressed the WPS button, try pressing it again and holding it for a little longer. If the light still does not blink, you must STOP the WPS setup process and configure your D-LINK EXO DAP-1820 using Method Two: D-Link Wi-Fi Setup.
