What are the important safety instructions for the COUNTYLINE CLPT85?
You should carefully read and follow all safety instructions in the manual and on the pump. Keep safety labels in good condition and replace any that are missing or damaged.
1. Read the manual carefully. Failure to follow these instructions could cause serious bodily injury and/or property damage.
2. Consult an installer or licensed plumber for the correct relief valve. Install the system according to local codes.
3. Always test water from the well for purity before using. Check with the local health department for the testing procedure.
4. Before installing or servicing the tank, be sure the pump’s electric power source is disconnected. Release all water pressure before working on the tank or system. Release air pressure before removing the cover flange.
5. Install a relief valve in the pump supply line to the tank, as close to the tank as possible.
6. Be sure the pump electrical circuit is properly grounded.
7. Remove bleeder orifices, air volume controls, or other air charging devices in the existing system.
8. Do not use the tank as a surge suppressor.
Risk of explosion: To prevent possible serious or fatal injury and/or damage to equipment, the system pressure must be less than 100 pounds per square inch (PSI) (689kPa) under any circumstances. If the system discharge pressure can exceed 100 PSI (689kPa), install a relief valve capable of passing the full pump volume at 100 PSI (689kPa).
Risk of freezing: Do not allow the pump, tank, or piping system to freeze. Freezing can severely damage equipment and may lead to tank explosion and serious injury. Allowing the tank to freeze voids the tank warranty.
California Proposition 65 Warning: This product and related accessories contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
How do I set the pre-charge pressure on my COUNTYLINE CLPT85 pressure tank?
The COUNTYLINE CLPT85 tank comes pre-charged with air from the factory to 40 PSI. When installing, you must set the tank pressure according to your pressure switch setting. To do this, bleed air from or add air to the tank through the valve on top of the tank. Always set or check the tank pre-charge with NO WATER in the tank or water pressure in the system. If you have already pumped water, turn the pump off and open a faucet until there is no more water pressure. Set the pre-charge according to the chart below, then close the faucet and turn the pump back on. After adjusting the pressure, replace and tighten the air valve cap to prevent air loss, which can lead to tank waterlogging and bladder failure.
The first number on the pressure switch is the pump ‘ON’ setting; the second number is the pump ‘OFF’ setting.
| When Pressure Switch Setting Is: | Reduce Tank Precharge (PSI) To: |
|---|---|
| 20-40 PSI (138-276 kPa) | 18 (124 kPa) |
| 30-50 PSI (207-345 kPa) | 28 (193 kPa) |
| 40-60 PSI (276-414 kPa) | 38 (262 kPa) |
How does the operating cycle of the COUNTYLINE CLPT85 pressure tank work?
1. When the tank is nearly empty, the air expands, filling the area above the bladder.
2. As water enters the tank, the air above the bladder is compressed as it fills.
3. The pump-up cycle is complete when the air is compressed to the OFF setting of the pressure switch.
4. When water is drawn from the tank, the compressed air in the tank forces the water out of the bladder.
5. Once the bladder is empty, a new cycle is ready to begin.
How do I install the COUNTYLINE CLPT85 pressure tank?
To install your COUNTYLINE CLPT85:
1. Connect the discharge pipe from the pump to a tee.
2. Connect one side of the tee to the tank flange and the other side of the tee to the service line. Use plastic or steel pipe as required.
3. To prevent leaks, use PTFE pipe thread sealant tape on the male threads of all threaded connections.
4. To ensure pipe joints are not cross-threaded and all threads are clean, first make connections by hand without any sealer. Once you confirm the threads are clean, remove the pipe, add PTFE tape, and remake the connection. Tighten by hand first, then finish with a pipe wrench.
5. When installing an elbow or nipple into the plastic tank flange, tighten it hand-tight plus an additional 1-1/2 turns with a pipe wrench. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!
What should I do when replacing a standard water tank with a COUNTYLINE CLPT85 pre-charged tank?
When replacing a standard tank with a pre-charged tank like the COUNTYLINE CLPT85, no bleeder orifices or Air Volume Control (AVC) are required. Ensure the pre-charged tank has an equivalent drawdown to the standard tank you are replacing.
For jet pump installations: Remove the AVC tube from the port in the pump body or jet body and plug the port. New pumps typically come with the plug already installed.
For submersible pump installations: There may be bleeder orifices in the vertical discharge pipe. These must be removed and the tees plugged when a pre-charged tank is installed. To do this, raise the pump and discharge piping enough to bring the bleeder orifices clear of the well. Remove the bleeder orifices from the tees and replace them with plugs. Bleeder orifices can be 1/2″, 3/4″, or 1″. Replace the pump and reconnect the discharge pipe.
How do I adjust the tank pre-charge and check the air charge on my COUNTYLINE CLPT85?
Adjusting Tank Pre-charge
In areas with high temperatures for long periods, the tank pre-charge pressure may increase, which can reduce the tank’s drawdown. If this occurs, adjust the pre-charge pressure according to the pre-charge settings chart. You should also flush all air out of the piping system and the water reservoir portion of the tank. Adjustment is required for new installations, pumps that need re-priming, and pumps that have been disassembled for service.
To Check Tank Air Charge
If drawdown decreases significantly, check the air charge annually as follows:
1. Shut off the electric power to the pump, open a faucet near the tank, and drain it completely.
2. At the air valve, check the tank’s air pressure with a tire gauge. Refer to the pre-charge settings chart for the correct pressure. Adjust the tank pressure up or down as needed.
3. Use soap or liquid detergent to check for air leaks around the air valve. Continuous bubbling indicates a leak. If necessary, release the air pressure and install a new core in the air valve (the same type used for automobile tubeless tires).
How do I test for a bladder leak in my COUNTYLINE CLPT85 pressure tank?
1. Disconnect power to the pump.
2. Drain all water from the tank bladder by opening the faucet closest to the tank.
3. Remove the valve cap and release all pressure by depressing the valve core. When air stops coming from the valve, remove the valve core to release any remaining pressure.
4. Disconnect the piping from the elbow on the tank cover flange.
5. Carefully turn the tank upside down or lay it on its side. Be cautious, as retained water can cause a sudden weight shift.
6. If the bladder leaks, water will run out of the air valve. If this happens, the bladder needs to be replaced.
7. If you are replacing the bladder, ensure all air and water pressures are relieved before removing the cover flange. When reassembling, do not tighten the nuts or mounting studs more than 65 in-lbs.
