What do the safety alert symbols on my COUNTYLINE CLPT20 pressure tank manual mean?

The safety alert symbols indicate potential for personal injury. You should be alert when you see these symbols on your pump or in the manual.

DANGER indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.

NOTICE addresses practices not related to personal injury.

What are the important safety instructions for installing and using the COUNTYLINE CLPT20 pressure tank?

Please follow these safety instructions carefully to avoid serious bodily injury and/or property damage:

1. Read the manual carefully.

2. Consult an installer or licensed plumber for the correct relief valve and install the system according to local codes.

3. Always test well water for purity before use. Check with your local health department for testing procedures.

4. Before installing or servicing the tank, ensure the pump’s electric power source is disconnected. Release all water pressure before working on the tank or system. Release air pressure before removing the cover flange.

5. Install a relief valve in the pump supply line to the tank, as close to the tank as possible.

6. Ensure the pump’s electrical circuit is properly grounded.

7. Remove any existing bleeder orifices, air volume controls, or other air charging devices in the system.

8. DO NOT use the tank as a surge suppressor.

What is the risk of explosion with the COUNTYLINE CLPT20, and how can it be prevented?

To prevent possible serious or fatal injury and/or damage to equipment, the system pressure must be less than 100 pounds per square inch (PSI) (689kPa) under any circumstances. Failure to follow this instruction can result in the tank blowing up. If the system discharge pressure can exceed 100 PSI (689kPa), you must install a relief valve capable of passing the full pump volume at 100 PSI (689kPa).

What is the risk of my COUNTYLINE CLPT20 freezing?

Do not allow the pump, tank, or piping system to freeze. Freezing can severely damage the equipment and may lead to a tank explosion and serious injury. Allowing the tank to freeze will void the tank warranty.

How do I set the pre-charge pressure for my COUNTYLINE CLPT20 tank?

The COUNTYLINE CLPT20 tank comes pre-charged with air at the factory to 40 PSI. When installing, you must set the tank pressure according to the pressure switch settings. To do this, bleed air from or add air to the tank through the valve on top of the tank.

NOTICE: Always set or check the tank pre-charge with NO WATER in the tank or water pressure in the system. If you have already pumped water before setting the pre-charge pressure, turn the pump off. Open a faucet until there is no more water pressure. Set the pre-charge in the tank, then close the faucet and turn the pump back on.

NOTICE: Replace and tighten the air valve cap after adjusting the pressure. Failure to replace the air cap may allow loss of air pressure, leading to tank waterlogging and bladder failure.

The correct pre-charge setting depends on your pump’s pressure switch setting. The first number on the pressure switch is the pump ‘ON’ setting, and the second is the ‘OFF’ setting.

When Pressure Switch Setting Is: Reduce Tank Precharge (PSI) To:
20-40 PSI (138-276 kPa) 18 (124 kPa)
30-50 PSI (207-345 kPa) 28 (193 kPa)
40-60 PSI (276-414 kPa) 38 (262 kPa)

How does the operating cycle of the COUNTYLINE CLPT20 pressure tank work?

The operating cycle of the COUNTYLINE CLPT20 involves the following steps:

1. When the tank is nearly empty, air expands, filling the area above the bladder.

2. As water enters the tank, the air above the bladder is compressed.

3. The pump-up cycle is complete when the air is compressed to the OFF setting of the pressure switch.

4. When water is drawn from the tank, the compressed air in the tank forces water out of the bladder.

5. Once the bladder is empty, a new cycle is ready to begin.

What should I know when replacing a standard tank with a COUNTYLINE CLPT20 pre-charged tank?

When replacing a standard tank in a water system with a COUNTYLINE CLPT20 pre-charged tank, no bleeder orifices or Air Volume Control (AVC) are required. When sizing a pre-charged tank to replace a standard tank, the tanks should have equivalent drawdowns. For example, a model CLPT20 pre-charged tank has a drawdown of 5.8 gallons (22L) and is equivalent to a 42-gallon standard tank that has a drawdown of 4.3 gallons (16.3L).

What should I do with the Air Volume Control (AVC) port when installing a COUNTYLINE CLPT20 with a jet pump?

For a jet pump installation, you must remove the AVC tube from the port in the pump body or jet body and plug the port. New pumps typically come with the plug already installed.

What should I do about bleeder orifices for a submersible pump installation with a COUNTYLINE CLPT20 tank?

For submersible pump installations, there may be bleeder orifices in the vertical discharge pipe. These must be removed and the tees plugged when a pre-charged tank like the COUNTYLINE CLPT20 is installed. To do this, raise the pump and discharge piping enough to bring the bleeder orifices clear of the well. Remove the bleeder orifices from the tees and replace them with plugs. Bleeder orifices can be of several sizes, so have a supply of 1/2″, 3/4″, and 1″ plugs available. After plugging the tees, replace the pump and reconnect the discharge pipe.

How do I check the air charge in my COUNTYLINE CLPT20 tank?

To prevent waterlogging, you should check the tank air charge annually. If the drawdown (amount of water per cycle) decreases significantly, check the air charge as follows:

1. Shut off the electric power to the pump. Open a faucet near the tank and drain it completely.

2. At the air valve on the tank, check the air pressure with a tire gauge. Refer to the pre-charge settings chart for the correct pressure setting. If needed, adjust the tank pressure up or down.

3. Use soap or liquid detergent to check for air leaks around the air valve. Continuous bubbling indicates a leak. If necessary, release all air pressure and install a new core in the air valve (the same type used for automobile tubeless tires).

How can I test for a bladder leak in my COUNTYLINE CLPT20 pressure tank?

Follow these steps to test for a bladder leak:

1. Disconnect power to the pump.

2. Drain all water from the tank bladder by opening the faucet closest to the tank.

3. Remove the air valve cap and release all pressure by depressing the valve core. When air stops coming from the valve, remove the valve core to release any remaining pressure.

4. Disconnect the piping from the elbow on the tank cover flange.

5. Carefully turn the tank upside down or lay it on its side. CAUTION: Retained water in the tank may cause a sudden weight shift. Support the tank so it cannot fall.

6. If the bladder leaks, water will run out of the air valve. If this happens, you will need to replace the bladder.

7. If you are replacing the bladder, ensure all air and water pressures are relieved before removing the cover flange. When reassembling the cover flange, do not tighten nuts or mounting studs more than 65 in-lbs.

What are the drawdown specifications for the COUNTYLINE CLPT20 at different pressure settings?

The drawdown is the amount of usable water available per cycle. The drawdown for the COUNTYLINE CLPT20 varies with the pressure switch settings as follows:
