What are the important safety instructions I should follow when installing or servicing my COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank?

When installing, operating, or servicing your COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank, you should carefully read and follow all safety instructions. Adherence to these instructions can prevent serious bodily injury and/or property damage.

1. Consult an installer or licensed plumber for the correct relief valve. Install the system according to local codes.

2. Always test water from the well for purity before using. Check your local health department for the testing procedure.

3. Before installing or servicing the tank, BE SURE the pump electric power source is disconnected. Release all water pressure before working on the tank or system. Release air pressure before removing the cover flange.

4. Install a relief valve in the pump supply line to the tank, as close to the tank as possible.

5. BE SURE the pump electrical circuit is properly grounded.

6. Remove bleeder orifices, air volume controls, or other air charging devices in the existing system.

7. DO NOT USE the tank as a surge suppressor.

What do the safety alert symbols and signal words in the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 manual mean?

The manual for the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 uses the safety alert symbol and specific signal words to alert you to the potential for personal injury. You should look for and understand these words:

DANGER indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.

NOTICE addresses practices not related to personal injury.

What is the risk of explosion with the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 and how can it be prevented?

There is a risk of explosion with the COUNTYLINE CLPT52. To prevent possible serious or fatal injury and/or damage to equipment, the system pressure must be less than 100 pounds per square inch (PSI) (689kPa) under any circumstances. Failure to follow this instruction can result in the tank blowing up.

If the system discharge pressure can exceed 100 PSI (689kPa), you must install a relief valve capable of passing the full pump volume at 100 PSI (689kPa).

What is the risk of freezing for the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank?

There is a risk of freezing. Do not allow the pump, tank, or piping system to freeze. Freezing can severely damage equipment and may lead to a tank explosion and serious injury. Allowing the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 tank to freeze voids the tank warranty.

How do I set the pre-charge pressure on my COUNTYLINE CLPT52 tank?

The COUNTYLINE CLPT52 tank is factory pre-charged to 40 PSI. When installing, you must set the tank pressure according to your pressure switch setting. To do this, bleed air from or add air to the tank through the valve on top of the tank.

Always set or check the tank pre-charge with NO WATER in the tank or water pressure in the system. If you have already pumped water, turn the pump off, then open a faucet until there is no more water pressure. Set the pre-charge in the tank according to the chart below, then close the faucet and turn the pump back on.

Replace and tighten the air valve cap after the pressure is adjusted correctly. Failure to replace the air cap may allow loss of air pressure and lead to tank waterlogging and bladder failure.

Tank Precharge Settings
When Pressure Switch Setting Is: Reduce Tank Precharge (PSI) To:
20-40 PSI (138-276 kPa) 18 (124 kPa)
30-50 PSI (207-345 kPa) 28 (193 kPa)
40-60 PSI (276-414 kPa) 38 (262 kPa)

Note: The first number on the pressure switch is the pump ‘ON’ setting; the second number is the pump ‘OFF’ setting.

How does the operating cycle of the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pre-charged pressure tank work?

The operating cycle of the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank involves the compression and expansion of air to move water.

1. Tank nearly empty: The air expands, filling the area above the bladder.

2. Water enters tank: Air is compressed above the bladder as it fills with water.

3. Pump-up cycle completed: The air is compressed to the OFF setting of the pressure switch.

4. Water drawn from tank: The compressed air in the tank forces water out of the bladder.

5. Bladder empty: A new cycle is ready to begin.

How do I install the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank?

To install your COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank:

1. Connect the discharge pipe from the pump to a tee.

2. Connect one side of the tee to the tank flange and the other side of the tee to the service line. Use plastic or steel pipe as required.

3. To prevent leaks, use PTFE pipe thread sealant tape on the male threads of all threaded connections to the tank.

To ensure pipe joints are not cross-threaded and all threads are clean, make connections by hand (without sealer) first. When threads are clean, remove the pipe, add PTFE tape, and remake the connection. Tighten by hand first, then finish with a pipe wrench.

When installing an elbow or nipple in the plastic tank flange, tighten it hand tight plus 1-1/2 turns with a pipe wrench. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!

What should I know when replacing a standard water tank with a COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pre-charged tank?

When replacing a standard tank in a water system with a pre-charged COUNTYLINE CLPT52 tank, no bleeder orifices or Air Volume Control (AVC) are required. When sizing a pre-charged tank to replace a standard tank, the tanks should have equivalent drawdowns. For example, a model CLPT20 pre-charged tank has a drawdown of 5.8 gallons and is equivalent to a 42-gallon standard tank that has a drawdown of 4.3 gallons.

Most standard tanks have separate inlet and outlet ports. Pre-charged tanks like the COUNTYLINE CLPT52 have one port serving both functions. When replacing a standard tank with a pre-charged tank, run the pipe from the pump into a tee as shown in the manual. The second leg of the tee goes to the tank elbow. The third leg goes to the existing service.

What should I do with the AVC port or bleeder orifices when installing my COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank?

Before installing your COUNTYLINE CLPT52, disconnect all power to the pump and bleed all pressure from the system.

For jet pump installations: Remove the Air Volume Control (AVC) tube from the port in the pump body or jet body and plug the port. New pumps typically come with the plug already installed.

For submersible pump installations: There may be bleeder orifices in the vertical discharge pipe. These must be removed and the tees plugged when a pre-charged tank is installed. To do this, raise the pump and discharge piping enough to bring the bleeder orifices clear of the well. Remove the bleeder orifices from the tees and replace them with plugs. Bleeder orifices may be of several sizes, so have a supply of 1/2″, 3/4″, and 1″ plugs available. Replace the pump and reconnect the discharge pipe.

How do I check the air charge on my COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank?

To prevent waterlogging, you should check the tank air charge annually. If drawdown decreases significantly, check the air charge as follows:

1. To check the air charge in the tank, shut off the electric power to the pump, open a faucet near the tank, and drain it completely.

2. At the air valve, check the tank air pressure with a tire gauge. Refer to the “Tank Precharge Settings” chart for the correct pressure setting. If needed, adjust the tank pressure up or down.

3. Use soap or liquid detergent to check for air leaks around the air valve. Continuous bubbling indicates a leak. If necessary, release the air pressure and install a new core in the air valve (the same type used for automobile tubeless tires).

How do I test for a bladder leak in my COUNTYLINE CLPT52 pressure tank?

To test the bladder of your COUNTYLINE CLPT52 for leaks, follow these steps:

1. Disconnect power to the pump.

2. Drain water from the tank bladder by opening the faucet closest to the tank.

3. Remove the valve cap and release all pressure by depressing the valve core. When air stops coming from the valve, remove the valve core to release any remaining pressure.

4. Disconnect piping from the elbow on the tank cover flange.

5. Carefully turn the tank upside down or lay it on its side. Be cautious, as retained water in the tank may cause a sudden weight shift. Support the tank so it cannot fall.

6. If the bladder leaks, water will run out of the air valve. If so, the bladder needs to be replaced.

7. If replacing the bladder, be sure all air and water pressures are relieved before removing the cover flange. When reassembling the cover flange, do not tighten the nuts or mounting studs more than 65 in-lbs.
