If the Windows operating system or the notebook stops responding and you cannot turn it off, try the following steps in the order listed:

1. Press the power button to restart.

2. If possible, shut down Windows by pressing ctrl+alt+del, and then selecting Shut Down > Restart.

3. Press and hold the power button for about 4 seconds until the display shuts down. Then press the power button again to restart.

4. Use a ballpoint pen or a straightened paper clip to press the reset button on the bottom of the notebook.

To boot from a CD, insert a bootable CD (such as a Recovery disc) into the optical drive, and then restart. Press esc when the HP logo appears, and then select the optical drive as the temporary boot device.

The COMPAQ PRESARIO 2200 comes with power management features that extend battery operating time and conserve power. The notebook supports the following features:

• Standby

• Hibernation

• Setting customization by the user

• Hotkeys for setting the level of performance

• Lid switch standby/resume

• Power/standby button

• Advanced Configuration and Power Management (ACPM) compliance

1. Open Computer Setup by turning on or restarting the notebook. Press f10 while the “Press <F10> to enter Setup” message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen.

• To change the language, press f2.

• To view navigation information, press f1.

• To return to the Computer Setup menu, press esc.

2. Select the File, Security, Tools, or Advanced menu using the arrow keys.

3. To exit Computer Setup, choose one of the following:

• To exit without saving any changes, use the arrow keys to select File > Ignore changes and exit, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

• To exit and save all the settings you have entered, use the arrow keys to select File > Save changes and exit, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

1. Open Computer Setup by turning on or restarting the notebook and pressing f10 when prompted.

2. Use the arrow keys to select File > Restore defaults.

3. Select the Restore Defaults check box.

4. To confirm the restoration, press f10.

5. Select File > Save changes and exit, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

If the power LED is off, follow these troubleshooting steps:

1. Try to power up the notebook on battery power alone. If it does not power on, try resetting the power by pressing the reset button or using the standby switch. If it still does not power on, proceed to step 2. If it does power on, there may be an issue with the AC power source.

2. Check the battery. Visually check for debris in the battery socket and clean if necessary. Try to power on again. If it fails, check the battery by recharging it, moving it to another compatible notebook, or replacing it. If the notebook powers on with a different power supply, the issue may be with the original power supply.

3. Check the AC adapter. Plug the adapter directly into an AC outlet. If the Power LED on the adapter is not on, reseat the AC adapter in the notebook and at the power source. If there is still no power, check if the power outlet is active by trying a different outlet. If the outlet is working, replace the power cord first, then if necessary, replace the external AC adapter.

4. If the notebook still does not power on, open the notebook to check for loose or damaged internal parts. Reseat any loose components and boards and replace any damaged items. Then close the notebook and retest. If the issue persists, you may need to replace internal components like the DC-DC converter, internal AC adapter, processor board, or system board.

If there is no video on the notebook’s internal or an external display, follow these steps:

1. Adjust the brightness. If the video is still not okay, press the lid switch to ensure proper operation.

2. If using an external display, check the brightness of the external monitor. If there’s still an issue, try a different external monitor.

3. If the internal display is not working, check the cable between the notebook and the notebook display for bent pins. If the cable is fine, you may need to replace the display or the system board.

If the OS is not loading from the hard drive, perform the following checks:

1. If you see a “Nonsystem disk” message, remove any diskette or disc from the drives and reboot. If the issue persists, the hard drive may need to be replaced or the OS reinstalled.

2. If there is no “Nonsystem disk” message, reseat the internal hard drive.

3. Check the boot order in the Computer Setup utility to ensure the hard drive is set as a boot device. Try to boot from a CD or diskette if possible to diagnose the hard drive.

4. Run diagnostic tools like FDISK to check if the hard drive is partitioned and formatted correctly. If not, you may need to repartition, reformat, and reinstall the OS. Be aware this will erase all data.

5. Run SCANDISK to check for bad sectors on the hard drive. If bad sectors are found and cannot be fixed, the hard drive may need to be replaced.

6. Check for viruses. If a virus is detected, clean it. If the OS still doesn’t load, you may need to reinstall the OS.

7. If system files are missing or corrupt, you will need to install the OS and reboot.

If you are experiencing no audio, follow these steps:

1. Turn up the volume internally using the volume controls and externally if using external speakers.

2. If using a docking station, undock the notebook and check for internal audio. If audio works, the issue may be with the docking station.

3. Check if the audio driver in the OS is configured correctly. If not, reload the audio drivers.

4. Ensure the correct drivers for the application are loaded and the configuration is set in the OS.

5. Connect to an external speaker to test. If external speakers work but internal ones do not, there may be an issue with the internal speakers or their connection.

6. If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may need to replace components such as the internal speakers, audio board (if applicable), or the system board.

1. Connect a known good external keyboard to the notebook. If the external keyboard works, the issue is likely with the internal keyboard or its connection.

2. If the external keyboard does not work, the problem may be with the system board.

3. If the external keyboard works, reseat the internal keyboard connector.

4. If the internal keyboard is still not operating properly after reseating, replace the internal keyboard or its cable.

5. If a new internal keyboard also does not work, the issue is likely with the system board.

Removable drives are fragile and must be handled with care. To prevent damage, observe the following precautions:

• Before removing or inserting a hard drive, shut down the notebook completely.

• Before removing a diskette or optical drive, ensure no media is inside and the tray is closed.

• Before handling a drive, ensure you are discharged of static electricity and avoid touching the connector.

• Handle drives on surfaces covered with at least one inch of shock-proof foam.

• Avoid dropping drives.

• After removing a drive, place it in a static-proof bag.

• Avoid exposing a hard drive to magnetic fields from monitors or speakers.

• Avoid exposing a drive to temperature extremes or liquids.

• If a drive must be mailed, use a bubble pack mailer or other protective packaging and label it “FRAGILE: Handle With Care.”

Before you begin any removal or installation procedures, you must prepare the notebook:

1. Shut down the notebook. If you are unsure whether it is off or in Hibernation, turn it on and then shut it down through the operating system.

2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the notebook.

3. Disconnect the power cord.

4. Remove the battery pack.

5. Remove the hard drive.

1. Turn the notebook upside down with the front panel toward you.

2. Slide and hold the battery release latch toward the back of the notebook.

3. Use the notch in the battery bezel to slide the battery pack to the left.

4. Remove the battery pack.

To install the battery pack, reverse this procedure.

1. First, prepare the notebook for disassembly by shutting it down, disconnecting all cables and external devices, and removing the battery pack.

2. Remove the two rubber screw covers that conceal the hard drive retention screws.

3. Remove the two PM2.0×6.0 screws that secure the hard drive to the notebook.

4. Use the notch in the hard drive bezel to slide the hard drive forward and remove it from the notebook.

5. To disassemble the hard drive assembly further, remove the two PM1.5×5.0 shoulder screws to detach the bezel.

6. Remove the four PM2.5×4.0 screws to detach the hard drive frame and disconnect the hard drive connector.

To reassemble and install the hard drive, reverse these procedures.

1. Prepare the notebook for disassembly (shut down, disconnect power, remove battery).

2. Loosen the two screws that secure the memory module compartment cover on the bottom of the notebook.

3. Lift the back edge of the cover and swing it forward to remove it.

4. To remove an existing module, spread the two retaining tabs on each side of the memory module socket. The module will rise up.

5. Remove the memory module by pulling it away from the socket at a 45-degree angle.

To install a memory module, reverse the procedure, ensuring the module is inserted at a 45-degree angle and then pressed down until the retaining tabs click into place.

1. Prepare the notebook for disassembly and remove the keyboard cover.

2. Remove the three PM2.0×4.0 screws and the one PM2.0×3.0 screw that secure the keyboard to the notebook.

3. Lift the back edge of the keyboard and swing it forward until it rests on the palm rest.

4. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector to which the keyboard cable is attached and disconnect the cable.

5. Remove the keyboard.

To install the keyboard, reverse this procedure.

1. Prepare the notebook for disassembly, then remove the keyboard cover and keyboard.

2. Remove the PM2.0×8.0 screw and the PM2.0×4.0 screw that secure the optical drive to the notebook.

3. Push on the back of the optical drive to disconnect it from the system board.

4. Remove the optical drive from the side of the notebook.

To install the optical drive, reverse this procedure.

1. Prepare the notebook for disassembly, then remove the keyboard cover and keyboard.

2. Remove the two PM2.0×5.0 screws that secure the wireless antenna boards to the notebook.

3. Disconnect the display cable from the system board.

4. Remove the six PM2.0×6.0 screws that secure the display hinges to the notebook top cover.

5. Position the notebook with the rear panel toward you and open the display perpendicular to the notebook base.

6. Remove the two PM2.0×6.0 screws from the back of the hinges.

7. Lift the display straight up to remove it.

To install the display assembly, reverse this procedure.

The requirements listed below are applicable to all countries:

• The length of the power cord set must be at least 1.5 m (5.0 ft) and a maximum of 2.0 m (6.5 ft).

• All power cord sets must be approved by an acceptable accredited agency responsible for evaluation in the country where the power cord set will be used.

• The power cord sets must have a minimum current capacity of 10 amps and a nominal voltage rating of 125 or 250 V AC, as required by each country’s power system.

• The appliance coupler must meet the mechanical configuration of an EN 60 320/IEC 320 Standard Sheet C13 connector for mating with the appliance inlet on the back of the notebook.
