The CARY AUDIO SL-100 dual mono solid state preamplifier combines the desirable attributes of low noise, low distortion and ease of use, making it an excellent preamplifier choice for your home audio system. The all solid state design ensures carefree maintenance, yet delivers a very smooth tonal balance not unlike tubes. Feature laden, the SL-100 offers XLR balanced input and output as well as multiple RCA single-ended inputs making it highly flexible. The full function remote control powers the SL-100 on/off, switches sources, and controls volume, balance, mute and brightness of the front panel display. The SL-100 utilizes dual power supplies and dual mono circuitry and offers outstanding musical reproduction.

1. POWER

Press once to turn the power ON. The power indicator will blink for thirty (30) seconds and then stay on, at which point the unit is ready to operate.

Press again to turn the power OFF.

2. HEADPHONE JACK

This jack is used to listen to headphones.

3. SOURCE SELECTOR

The input source is selected by pressing the respective buttons.

4. ALPHANUMERIC Display

This thirteen-character display provides a wide range of information concerning the operation of the SL-100. The information displayed depends on what the SL-100 is doing.

Normal Operation: Displays the selected input name and volume setting.

Balance Mode: This shows the direction (L or R) and magnitude of the balance offset.

5. VOLUME

Use the volume control to adjust the listening level.

1. BALANCED INPUTS

Accepts right-channel and left-channel balanced signals from source equipment with balanced outputs. The pin assignments of these XLR-type female inputs are:

Pin 1: Signal ground

Pin 2: Signal + (non-inverting)

Pin 3: Signal – (inverting)

Connector ground lug: chassis ground

2. SINGLE-ENDED INPUTS

Accepts right-channel and left-channel (RCA) inputs from line-level source equipment such as DACs, tuners, CD player or SACD player.

3. ANALOG RECORD OUTPUT JACK (RCA UNBALANCED)

Use these jacks for connection to the right-channel and left-channel tape inputs of your recorder.

4. SINGLE-ENDED MAIN OUTPUTS

Use these jacks for connection to the power amplifiers.

5. BALANCED MAIN OUTPUTS

If your power amplifier is equipped with balanced inputs, it is generally best to use the balanced outputs on your preamplifier. The pin assignments of these XLR-type male outputs are:

Pin 1: Signal ground

Pin 2: Signal + (non-inverting)

Pin 3: Signal – (inverting)

Connector ground lug: chassis ground

6. DC TRIGGER OUTPUT TERMINALS

Connect a device that needs to be triggered by DC +12V (e.g., CD player).

7. POWER INPUT (AC IN)

Connect to an AC power supply using the included power supply cord.

8. IR INPUT JACK

Use this jack to connect external IR sensors.

9. RS-232 PORT

The RS-232 port is used in conjunction with an external controller to control the operation of the SL-100. (This is for custom installation use.)

1. POWER: Use to turn the power on and off.

2. MUTE: Use to mute the sound. Press again to resume sound.

3. VOLUME: Use the buttons to adjust the volume of the SL-100 from Volume 0 to Volume 63.

4. BALANCE: Use the buttons to fine-tune the relative balance of the Left and Right channel from your listening position using the balance buttons in 1 dB increments.

5. INPUT SELECTOR: Use the buttons for remote selection of the various inputs of the SL-100.

6. BRIGHT: Use this button to cycle through four levels of brightness (including “OFF”) for the display, allowing adjustment for various ambient lighting conditions.

7. INPUT SOURCE: Input source is selected by pressing their respective buttons.

In general, the location of your new SL-100 is not critical. Certain precautions must be taken to ensure optimum performance. Avoid extremely hot locations such as near a radiator or other heating units. Keep the top of the SL-100 clear of books, paper or other equipment to protect against overheating.

The SL-100 is designed to work from house current AC mains. The design voltage is 120V AC at 50/60Hz (foreign units 240V AC at 50/60Hz). Plug the provided AC power cable into the AC power jack on the rear panel of the unit.

Balanced Inputs: Accepts right-channel and left-channel balanced signals from a source component with balanced outputs.

Single-ended Inputs: Accepts right-channel and left-channel (single-ended) inputs from a source component.

Balanced Main Outputs: These are for connection to the XLR input jacks of an accompanying power amplifier or electronic crossover.

Single-ended Outputs: These are for connection to the RCA input jacks of an accompanying power amplifier or electronic crossover.

1. Make sure that all the connections are proper by referring to the rear panel labels.

2. Check the directivity of stereo separation (right channel to right channel, left channel to left channel).

3. Check the directivity of pin cord connection, if your patch cables are labeled for direction of connection.

Turn on the SL-100 and wait for the power LED to stop blinking after thirty (30) seconds. Turn on any other components making sure the appropriate input is selected on the preamplifier, and gradually turn up the volume control to a suitable and enjoyable level.

The components and other circuitry take approximately 100 hours of use to settle in for peak performance. The SL-100 will sound good right out of the box, but it will improve within a short time. After the first 50-100 hours, you will notice increased depth and tighter bass. This break-in period is characteristic of quality audio devices.

The cabinet housing and front panel of the SL-100 may be cleaned with a soft cloth and Windex or a window cleaner. The frequency of cleaning will be governed by how many hours the SL-100 is operated and by operating environment cleanliness.

CAUTION:

Do not let any liquids spill into the vents on top of the unit.

Never remove or insert the back panel AC plug when the unit is on or the AC cord is plugged into the wall.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this appliance to rain or moisture.

2. RETAIN OWNER’S MANUAL: These safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference.

3. HEED WARNING: All warnings on the unit and in the operating instructions should be adhered to.

4. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS: All operating and use instructions should be followed.

5. CLEANING: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet before cleaning. The unit should be cleaned only as recommended by the manufacturer.

6. ATTACHMENTS: Do not use attachments not recommended by the unit manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

7. WATER AND MOISTURE: Do not use the unit near water – for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub; in a wet basement; or near a swimming pool.

8. ACCESSORIES: Do not place the unit on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The unit may fall, causing serious injury or damage.

9. VENTILATION: Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation. These openings must not be blocked or covered. The unit should not be installed in a built-in location such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided. There should be free space of at least 6 inches (16cm) above the unit and an opening behind the unit.

10. GROUNDING OR POLARIZATION: The unit may be equipped with a polarized alternating current line plug. This is a safety feature. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

11. POWER SOURCES: The unit should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label.

12. POWER CORD PROTECTION: Power supply cords should be routed so that they are unlikely to be walked on or pinched by items placed on or against them.

13. OVERLOADING: Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.

14. OBJECT AND LIQUID ENTRY: Never push objects of any kind into the unit through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts. Never spill liquid of any kind on the unit.

15. SERVICING: Do not attempt to service the unit yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

16. HEAT: The unit should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other units (including amplifiers) that produce heat.

17. IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Before connecting a new component to your audio or home theater system it is always good practice to make certain that all components are turned off, and preferably unplugged from their AC power source.

18. Do Not Open the Cabinet: There are no user serviceable components inside this product. Opening the cabinet may present a shock hazard, and any modification to the product will void your warranty.
