What are the important safety instructions for using the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4?

Please follow these safety instructions when using your AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4:

1. Read these instructions.

2. Keep these instructions.

3. Heed all warnings.

4. Follow all instructions.

5. Do not submerge this apparatus in water.

6. Clean only with a dry cloth.

7. SECURE MOUNTING: Mounting your subwoofer enclosure properly isn’t just about keeping things clean, it’s about keeping things safe. A loose subwoofer enclosure can become a hazard during a hard stop or sharp turn. A poorly placed or unsecured enclosure can interfere with important vehicle components like fuel lines, brake lines, or electrical wiring. Before drilling, check what’s behind or underneath your mounting area.

8. Use speaker wire of sufficient size to ensure adequate current to the speaker. For EPICX Subwoofers, this means 10-14 gauge speaker wire.

9. To prevent excessive cone excursion and potential damage to the subwoofer, it is advisable to use an infrasonic (subsonic) filter set half an octave below Fb (the enclosure’s tuning frequency).

10. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as if the power input terminals are damaged, objects have fallen into the apparatus, it does not operate normally, or has been dropped.

11. Exposure to high sound pressure levels may lead to permanent hearing loss. Take every precaution to protect your hearing.

What is the recommended music power for the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4?

The recommended speaker music power for the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 is:

MIN: 200W

RMS: 400W

MAX: 600W

The power handling of the EPICX8 varies depending on the enclosure the subwoofer is installed in. Please see below to determine the enclosure type and its power handling capabilities.

1. Sealed enclosure – 400 W RMS

2. Vented enclosure – 400 W RMS

3. Large vented enclosure – 350 W RMS

In the case of an oversized vented enclosure, reduced power is needed to control the woofer’s excursion and maintain high efficiency.

What are the Thiele/Small (TS) parameters for the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofer?

Below are the TS parameters for the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofer. These specifications are intended for use in designing and modeling custom enclosures to ensure optimal performance.

Parameter EPICX8 D4
QES 0.691
QMS 6.02
QTS 0.62

BL 8.15 T.m
LE 1.10 mH
SD 209 cm²
XMAX 9.25 mm (one way)
Sensitivity 83.7 dB @ 1W/1m

Note: TS parameters are measured after an 8 to 12 hour break-in period and may change slightly with use. They can also vary marginally between production batches.

How do I wire a single AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofer in series?

Wiring a dual voice coil subwoofer in series doubles the impedance the amplifier sees. To do this with your AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4:

1. Connect one voice coil’s negative terminal to the other voice coil’s positive terminal to form a bridge.

2. Connect the amp’s positive output to the first voice coil’s open positive terminal.

3. Connect the amp’s negative output to the second voice coil’s open negative terminal.

For the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 (4Ω), this wiring results in a final impedance of 8Ω.

How do I wire a single AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofer in parallel?

Wiring a dual voice coil subwoofer in parallel cuts the impedance the amplifier sees in half. To do this with your AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4:

1. Connect both positive voice coil terminals together.

2. Connect both negative voice coil terminals together.

3. Connect the amp’s positive output to the joined positive terminals.

4. Connect the amp’s negative output to the joined negative terminals.

For the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 (4Ω), this wiring results in a final impedance of 2Ω.

How do I wire two AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofers in a series-parallel configuration?

To wire two AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofers in a series-parallel configuration, follow these steps:

1. On each subwoofer, connect one voice coil’s negative terminal to the other voice coil’s positive terminal to form a bridge. This is done on both subwoofers.

2. Connect the remaining open positive terminals from each subwoofer together (positive to positive).

3. Connect the remaining open negative terminals from each subwoofer together (negative to negative).

4. Connect the amp’s positive output to the joined positive terminals.

5. Connect the amp’s negative output to the joined negative terminals.

For two AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 (4Ω) subwoofers, this wiring results in a final impedance of 4Ω.

How do I wire two AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofers in parallel?

To wire two AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 subwoofers in parallel, follow these steps:

1. On each subwoofer, connect both positive voice coil terminals together.

2. On each subwoofer, connect both negative voice coil terminals together.

3. Connect the joined positive terminals on each subwoofer together.

4. Connect the joined negative terminals on each subwoofer together.

5. Connect the amp’s positive output to the joined positive terminals.

6. Connect the amp’s negative output to the joined negative terminals.

For two AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4 (4Ω) subwoofers, this wiring results in a final impedance of 1Ω.

What is the difference between a sealed and a ported enclosure for the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4?

The choice between a sealed or ported enclosure depends on available space and personal music preference. Here are the characteristics of each for the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4:

Sealed Enclosures

• Smaller enclosure size

• Excellent transient response

• Less output per watt, but punchier, tighter sound

• Lower dynamic output

Ported/Vented Enclosure

• Larger enclosure size

• Extended lower frequency response

• More bass output per watt

• Better dynamic output

If you have the space, a slot vented enclosure is recommended for the best all-around bass experience.

How does the enclosure size affect the sound of the AUDIOCONTROL EPICX8 D4?

Once you’ve decided on a sealed or ported enclosure, you can fine-tune its size to match your vehicle space and listening preferences. Here is how enclosure size affects the overall sound:

MIN: This is the smallest recommended enclosure size. It provides the most compact size, while sacrificing some low-frequency bass response.

IDEAL: This value is recommended for most listeners, providing an excellent blend of low-frequency bass with accurate and strong overall output.

MAX: This is the largest recommended enclosure size. Although it is quite large, it provides exceptional bass with extended low-frequency output.
