The original properties deteriorate due to the aging process, and winter tyres especially lose their adhesion properties. Even visually flawless tyres with sufficient tread depth can show a significant reduction in wet properties and winter suitability due to ageing.

To ensure optimal safety, smoothest possible running, and even wear, it is recommended to have the wheels and tyres balanced at least twice during the tyre’s service life.

Before Balancing:

1. Conduct a road test to determine the nature of any vibration and the speed range in which it occurs.

2. Immediately after the road test, raise the vehicle and mark the position of each tyre (e.g., FL, FR, RL, RR).

3. Ensure tyre pressure is correct, the tread is not one-sidedly worn and is at least 4 mm deep, and there are no signs of damage.

4. Check that wheel suspension, steering, and shock absorbers are in perfect condition.

Procedure for Balancing on a Stationary Machine:

1. Remove the wheels from the vehicle.

2. Clean the contact surfaces, the centre of the wheel, and the recess on the inside of the wheel before mounting it on the balancer.

3. Mount the wheel and tyre on the wheel balancer, using a proper centring system to ensure it is 100% centred and clamped without damage.

4. Rotate the wheel on the balancer and check for even running of the tyre sidewall and body.

5. Check for radial or lateral runout. If runout is within tolerance, balance the wheel and tyre until the balancer display indicates 0 gram. Note that more than 60 grams of weight per tyre should not be used. If more is required, “matching” the tyre and rim may be necessary.

6. Bolt the wheel back onto the vehicle, first hand-tightening the lowest bolt to about 30 Nm, then tightening the remaining bolts diagonally to 30 Nm to centre the wheel. Lower the vehicle and use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the specified torque in a diagonal sequence.

7. After balancing, carry out a road test to confirm the vibration is resolved.

Step 1. Perform a road test to determine if the vehicle pulls to one side and, if so, which side.

Step 2. If it pulls, interchange the front and back wheels.

Step 3. Carry out a road test.

• If the vehicle travels straight, the process is complete.

• If the vehicle does not travel straight, proceed to Step 4.

Step 4. First, renew one tyre on the front axle and test again. If the issue persists, renew the other tyre on the front axle. If the vehicle still does not travel in a straight line, check the front and rear wheel alignment and contact Product Support if necessary.

Follow these instructions for correctly changing or fitting wheels on your VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 2005.

Preparation:

• Check to ensure that contact surfaces on the brake disc are free of corrosion and dirt.

• Check to ensure that the contact surface and centring seat on the inner side of the wheel (rim) are free of corrosion and dirt.

WARNING: Do not use an impact driver when screwing in the bolts!
