The SONY WH-1000XM4 headset uses BLUETOOTH® wireless technology, allowing you to do the following:

Listening to music: You can receive audio signals from a smartphone or music player to enjoy music wirelessly.

Talking on the phone: You can make and receive calls hands-free, while leaving your smartphone or mobile phone in your bag or pocket.

In the factory setting, you will hear the following English voice guidance prompts from your SONY WH-1000XM4 in these situations. You can change the language and turn the guidance on/off using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

Power:

When the headset is turned on: “Power on”

When the headset is turned off: “Power off”

Bluetooth Status:

When entering pairing mode: “Bluetooth pairing”

When establishing a Bluetooth connection: “Bluetooth connected”

When disconnecting a Bluetooth connection: “Bluetooth disconnected”

Multipoint Connection (When “Connect to 2 devices simultaneously” is on):

Note: If the voice guidance is not heard after changing the language or updating the software, turn the headset off and on again.

Setting the headset in the carrying case:

When you have finished using the headset, rotate the left and right units to flatten the headset, fold one unit toward the headband, and store them in the supplied carrying case.

To store the cables and plug adaptor for in-flight use:

Put the cables and plug adaptor for in-flight use in the holder separated by the divider in the carrying case.

You can check various statuses of the SONY WH-1000XM4 headset by the indicators. (Blue: Turns on in blue / Red: Turns on in red / -: Turns off)

Charging:

While charging: Red (lights up in red). The indicator turns off after charging is complete.

How to wear the headset:

1. Adjust the length of the headband.

2. Put the headset on your head with the L (left) mark on your left ear and the R (right) mark on your right ear. There is a tactile dot on the L (left) mark side for easy identification.

How wearing detection works:

The built-in proximity sensor in the left unit and acceleration sensors in both units detect when the headset is attached to or removed from your ears. This automatically controls the touch sensor, power, and music playback.

When the headset is worn:

The indicator next to the (power) button turns off.

You can use the touch sensor control panel to play music, make and receive calls, etc.

When the headset is removed:

Music playback will automatically pause. When you wear the headset again, music playback resumes.

To save the battery, the headset will automatically turn off after 15 minutes of not being worn.

Music playback, calls, and other operations cannot be performed via the touch sensor when the headset is removed.

If you are on a call and remove the headset, the call automatically switches to your smartphone. When you put the headset back on, the call switches back to the headset.

Note on incorrect detection:

Wearing detection may react incorrectly in the following cases:

With the headset around your neck, your chin goes into the housing

Putting your hand inside the earpad of the left unit

Putting the headset up and placing it in a bag

Wearing the headset with your face up or down, or upside down

Wearing the headset over a cap or scarf

When the supplied headphone cable is connected, wearing detection does not work.

If the proximity sensor gets fogged up or has water droplets on it, wearing detection may not work properly. Leave the sensor facing up until the moisture disappears.

The headset contains a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Use the supplied USB Type-C cable to charge the headset before use.

1. Connect the headset to an AC outlet. Use the supplied USB Type-C cable and a commercially available USB AC adaptor.

The charging indicator (red) of the headset lights up.

Charging is completed in about 3 hours, and the indicator turns off automatically.

After charging is complete, disconnect the USB Type-C cable.

System requirements for battery charge using USB:

USB AC adaptor: A commercially available USB AC adaptor capable of supplying an output current of 1.5 A or more.

Personal computer: Personal computer with a standard USB port.

Notes on charging:

Charging may not be successful with cables other than the supplied USB Type-C cable.

If charging starts while the headset is on, the headset will turn off automatically.

When the headset is connected to an AC outlet or computer, operations such as turning on the headset or connecting to Bluetooth devices cannot be performed.

The headset cannot be charged when the computer goes into standby (sleep) or hibernation mode.

If the headset is not used for a long time, the charging indicator (red) may not immediately light up when charging. Please wait a moment until the indicator lights up.

If the charging indicator (red) flashes, it may indicate an issue such as the ambient temperature being outside the range of 5 °C – 35 °C (41 °F – 95 °F) or a problem with the battery. Charge again within the temperature range or consult a Sony dealer if the problem persists.

The available operating times of the SONY WH-1000XM4 headset with the battery fully charged are as follows. About 5 hours of music playback is possible after 10 minutes of charging.

You can check the remaining battery charge of the SONY WH-1000XM4’s rechargeable battery in several ways:

Voice Guidance:

Press the (power) button while the headset is on. A voice guidance will announce the remaining battery charge (e.g., “Battery about XX %” or “Battery fully charged”). The indicator (red) will also flash for about 15 seconds if the charge is 10% or lower.

When the charge becomes low:

A warning beep will sound, and the operating indicator will turn red. You will hear the voice guidance, “Low battery, please recharge headset”. When the battery is completely empty, you will hear “Please recharge headset. Power off”, and the headset will turn off.

Using an iPhone or iPod touch:

When connected via HFP Bluetooth, an icon indicating the headset’s remaining battery charge will appear on the screen. The charge is shown at 10 different levels (e.g., 100%, 70%, 50%, 10% or lower).

Using an Android™ smartphone (OS 8.1 or later):

When connected via HFP Bluetooth, go to [Settings] – [Device connection] – [Bluetooth]. The remaining battery charge will be displayed next to the paired headset’s name. It is displayed in 10 levels (e.g., “100%”, “70%”, “50%”, or “10%”).

Press and hold the (power) button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) flashes. You will hear the voice guidance say, “Power on”.

Press and hold the (power) button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) turns off. You will hear the voice guidance say, “Power off”.

Additionally:

You can also turn off the headset with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

The headset will automatically turn off after 15 minutes of not being worn. This setting can be changed in the app.

When storing the headset in a bag, turn it off to prevent the wearing detection from reacting incorrectly.

First, pair the device with the headset. Before starting, ensure the smartphone is within 1 meter (3 feet) of the headset and the headset is charged.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

If you are pairing for the first time after purchase or after initializing, the headset enters pairing mode automatically when turned on. Proceed to step 2.

For a second or subsequent device, with the headset turned off, press and hold the (power) button for about 7 seconds. The indicator (blue) will repeatedly flash twice in a row, and you will hear “Bluetooth pairing”.

2. Unlock the screen of the Android smartphone.

3. Find the headset on the Android smartphone.

Select [Settings] – [Device connection] – [Bluetooth].

Touch the switch to turn on the Bluetooth function.

4. Touch [WH-1000XM4] from the list of available devices.

If both [WH-1000XM4] and [LE_WH-1000XM4] are displayed, select [WH-1000XM4]. It may take up to a minute for [WH-1000XM4] to appear.

If a Passkey is required, enter “0000”.

The headset and smartphone will pair and connect. You will hear the voice guidance say, “Bluetooth connected”.

By touching the headset with an NFC-compatible smartphone (Android 4.1 or later), the headset turns on, pairs, and establishes a Bluetooth connection automatically.

1. Unlock the screen of the smartphone if it is locked.

2. Turn on the smartphone’s NFC function.

Typically, this is found in [Settings] – [Device connection]. Touch the switch to turn on NFC.

3. Touch the smartphone with the headset.

Touch the N-Mark on the headset with the designated NFC location on your smartphone. Keep them touching until the smartphone reacts.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the pairing and connection. When connected, the indicator (blue) will flash slowly, and you will hear “Bluetooth connected”.

To disconnect, touch the smartphone to the headset again. You will hear “Bluetooth disconnected”.

First, pair the device with the headset. Before starting, ensure the iPhone is within 1 meter (3 feet) of the headset and the headset is charged.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

If you are pairing for the first time after purchase or after initializing, the headset enters pairing mode automatically when turned on. Proceed to step 2.

For a second or subsequent device, with the headset turned off, press and hold the (power) button for about 7 seconds. The indicator (blue) will repeatedly flash twice in a row, and you will hear “Bluetooth pairing”.

2. Unlock the screen of the iPhone if it is locked.

3. Find the headset on the iPhone.

Select [Settings].

Touch [Bluetooth].

Touch the switch to turn on the Bluetooth function.

4. Touch [WH-1000XM4] from the list of devices.

If both [WH-1000XM4] and [LE_WH-1000XM4] are displayed, select [WH-1000XM4]. It may take up to a minute for [WH-1000XM4] to appear.

If a Passkey is required, enter “0000”.

The headset and iPhone will pair and connect. You will hear the voice guidance say, “Bluetooth connected”.

Before starting, ensure your computer’s Bluetooth is on, it’s within 1 meter (3 feet) of the headset, and the headset is sufficiently charged.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

For a first-time pairing, simply turn the headset on. For subsequent pairings, press and hold the (power) button for about 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue twice in a row and you hear “Bluetooth pairing”.

2. Wake the computer if it is in standby or hibernation mode.

3. Register the headset using the computer.

Click the [Start] button, then [Settings].

Click [Devices].

Click the [Bluetooth] tab, click the [Bluetooth] switch to turn it on, then select [WH-1000XM4]. If both [WH-1000XM4] and [LE_WH-1000XM4] appear, select [WH-1000XM4].

Click [Pair].

If a Passkey is required, enter “0000”.

The headset and computer will connect, and you will hear the voice guidance say, “Bluetooth connected”.

This procedure is for macOS (version 10.10 or later). Before starting, ensure your Mac’s Bluetooth is on, it’s within 1 meter (3 feet) of the headset, and the headset is charged. Also, set the computer speaker to the ON mode.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

For a first-time pairing, simply turn the headset on. For subsequent pairings, press and hold the (power) button for about 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue twice in a row and you hear “Bluetooth pairing”.

2. Wake the computer if it is in standby or hibernation mode.

3. Register the headset using the computer.

Select [System Preferences] – [Bluetooth] from the task bar.

In the Bluetooth screen, select [WH-1000XM4] and click [Connect]. If both [WH-1000XM4] and [LE_WH-1000XM4] appear, select [WH-1000XM4].

If a Passkey is required, enter “0000”.

You will hear “Bluetooth connected”.

4. Select the headset as the audio output.

Click the speaker icon in the upper right part of the screen and select [WH-1000XM4]. You are now ready to enjoy music playback.

The SONY WH-1000XM4 can connect to 2 Bluetooth devices simultaneously when [Connect to 2 devices simultaneously] is turned on in the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. This allows you to listen to music from one device and wait for an incoming call on both.

1. Pair the headset with both devices you wish to use.

2. On the device where the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is installed, establish a Bluetooth connection with the headset.

3. Open the app and turn on [Connect to 2 devices simultaneously].

4. Operate the second device to establish a Bluetooth connection with the headset.

When both devices are connected, you can switch music playback between them. To play music from the second device, stop playback on the first device, then start playback on the second. For calls, if a call comes in on either device, a ring tone will be heard via the headset.

Note: When this feature is on, LDAC codec cannot be used. The codec will switch to AAC or SBC automatically.

You can use the SONY WH-1000XM4 as wired headphones, which is useful in places where Bluetooth is restricted, like on an airplane.

1. Connect your playback device to the headphone cable input jack on the headset using the supplied headphone cable. Be sure to connect the L-shaped plug into the connecting device.

Usage Notes:

You can listen to music even if the headset is turned off. In this case, the noise canceling function cannot be used.

To enjoy High-Resolution Audio or use noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode, turn the headset on while the cable is connected.

The headset turns off automatically if you disconnect the headphone cable while it is turned on.

When using the headphone cable, the Bluetooth function cannot be used.

The CUSTOM button cannot be used when the headset is turned off.

When a call comes in, you can answer using your phone and talk using the phone’s microphone. You will hear the caller’s voice through the headset.

If your Bluetooth device supports AVRCP, you can use the touch sensor control panel on the right earcup of your SONY WH-1000XM4 to control music playback.

Play/Pause: Tap the touch sensor control panel twice quickly (with an interval of about 0.4 seconds).

Skip to the next track: Swipe forward and release.

Skip to the beginning of the previous track (or current track): Swipe backward and release.

Fast-forward: Swipe forward and hold. Release at the desired point.

Fast-reverse: Swipe backward and hold. Release at the desired point.

Increase the volume: Swipe up repeatedly. For continuous adjustment, swipe up and hold.

Decrease the volume: Swipe down repeatedly. For continuous adjustment, swipe down and hold.

The SONY WH-1000XM4 offers several ways to manage your listening environment.

Using the Noise Canceling Function:

Turn on the headset. The noise canceling function turns on automatically, allowing you to enjoy music without being disturbed by ambient noise.

Switching Modes with the CUSTOM button:

Each time you press the CUSTOM button, the function switches and is announced by voice guidance in the following order:

1. Ambient Sound Mode: ON

2. Noise Canceling Function: OFF / Ambient Sound Mode: OFF

3. Noise Canceling Function: ON

Optimizing Noise Canceling (NC Optimizer):

This function optimizes noise canceling by detecting your face shape, hairstyle, and even pressure changes in an airplane. To use it:

1. Put on the headset with the power turned on.

2. Press and hold the CUSTOM button for about 2 seconds until you hear the voice guidance say, “Optimizer start”.

Test signals will be heard during optimization. When finished, you will hear, “Optimizer finished”.

Listening to Ambient Sound Quickly (Quick Attention Mode):

To hear announcements or speak to someone briefly, touch the entire touch sensor control panel on the right earcup. This turns down music, call sounds, and ringtones. Release your hand to deactivate Quick Attention Mode.

Speaking with someone (Speak-to-Chat):

When enabled, this mode automatically detects when you speak, pauses your music, and captures ambient voice. To enable/disable, hold 2 fingers to the touch sensor control panel until you hear “Speak-to-chat activated” or “Speak-to-chat deactivated”. The mode ends when the headset does not detect your voice for about 30 seconds.

Sound Quality Modes:

You can select between two sound quality modes during Bluetooth playback using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

Priority on sound quality mode (default): Prioritizes the best possible sound quality.

Priority on stable connection mode: Prioritizes a stable Bluetooth connection. Select this if the connection is unstable and you experience intermittent sound.

Supported Codecs:

A codec is an audio coding algorithm for transmitting sound via Bluetooth. The SONY WH-1000XM4 supports the following 3 codecs for music playback:

SBC (Subband Codec): The standard audio coding technology used in all Bluetooth devices.

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding): Mainly used in Apple products like the iPhone, providing higher sound quality than SBC.

LDAC: An audio coding technology developed by Sony that allows for the transmission of High-Resolution (Hi-Res) Audio content over Bluetooth, transmitting approximately 3 times more data than SBC for superior sound quality.

When music is transmitted from a connected device, the headset automatically switches to the appropriate codec. To use a higher quality codec like AAC or LDAC, you may need to manually select it on your transmitting device.

DSEE Extreme function:

DSEE Extreme uses AI technology to reproduce with high accuracy the frequency responses of the original sound source lost during compression.

You can enjoy hands-free calls with a smartphone that supports HFP or HSP Bluetooth profiles.

Receiving a call:

When an incoming call arrives, a ring tone will be heard from the headset. Tap the touch sensor control panel twice quickly (with an interval of about 0.4 seconds) to receive the call.

Making a call:

Operate your smartphone to make a call. The dial tone will be heard from the headset.

Ending a call:

Tap the touch sensor control panel twice quickly to end the call.

Adjusting volume during a call:

Swipe up or down on the touch sensor panel to adjust the volume.

Other call functions (HFP Profile):

Cancel an outgoing call: Tap the touch panel twice quickly.

Reject an incoming call: Hold your finger to the touch panel.

Switch call device (headset/smartphone): Hold your finger to the touch panel during a call.

Start voice dial / Activate Google™ app or Siri: During standby or music playback, hold your finger to the touch panel for about 2 seconds.

When you make a video call on your computer, you can talk wirelessly from your headset.

1. Connect the headset to your computer via Bluetooth connection.

2. Launch the video calling application on your computer.

3. Check the audio settings of your video calling application.

On the speaker settings, select the calling connection [Headset (WH-1000XM4 Hands-Free)]. Selecting [Headphones (WH-1000XM4 Stereo)] is for music playback and may not work for video calls.

On the microphone settings, select [Headset (WH-1000XM4 Hands-Free)].

Note: Depending on the video calling application, these options may not be available or may be named differently. If the microphone is not set up correctly and Speak-to-Chat is active, the sound from the headset may be muted when it detects your voice.

If the SONY WH-1000XM4 headset does not function as expected, try the following steps to resolve the issue.

1. Find the symptoms of the issue in the help guide and try any corrective actions listed.

2. Charge the headset. You may be able to resolve some issues by charging the headset battery.

3. Reset the headset. This procedure resets the headset but does not delete pairing information.

4. Initialize the headset. This operation resets volume settings, etc. to the factory settings, and deletes all pairing information.

If the operations above do not work, consult your nearest Sony dealer.

If your SONY WH-1000XM4 headset won’t turn on, try the following:

Make sure the battery is fully charged.

The headset cannot be turned on while charging. Remove the USB Type-C cable and then try to turn on the headset.

Reset the headset.

If your SONY WH-1000XM4 headset is not charging, please check the following:

Be sure to use the supplied USB Type-C cable.

Check that the USB Type-C cable is firmly connected to the headset and the USB AC adaptor or computer.

Make sure that the USB AC adaptor is firmly connected to the AC outlet.

Check that the computer is turned on.

Wake the computer up if it is in standby (sleep) or hibernation mode.

If using Windows 8.1, update using Windows Update.

Reset the headset.

If charging your SONY WH-1000XM4 seems to take too long, consider the following:

Check that the headset and the computer are directly connected, not via a USB hub.

Check that you are using a commercially available USB AC adaptor capable of supplying an output current of 1.5 A or more.

Check that you are using the supplied USB Type-C cable.

If you cannot hear any sound from your SONY WH-1000XM4, please try these steps:

Check that both the headset and the connected device (e.g., smartphone) are turned on.

Turn up the volume of the headset and the connected device.

When playing music, check that the headset and the device are connected via an A2DP Bluetooth connection.

When using a video calling app on a computer, ensure the connection is HFP or HSP.

If connecting to a computer, make sure the audio output setting of the computer is set for a Bluetooth device.

Pair the headset and the Bluetooth device again.

If using the supplied cable, check that it is connected firmly.

If Speak-to-Chat is enabled, it may activate unintentionally. Use the headset controls to exit Speak-to-Chat mode.

Reset the headset.

Charge the headset.

Initialize the headset, and pair it with the device again.

If you are experiencing low sound quality, try the following solutions:

Turn down the volume of the connected device if it is too loud.

Keep the headset away from sources of interference like a microwave oven or wireless LAN device.

Bring the headset closer to the Bluetooth device and remove any obstacles between them.

Keep the headset away from a TV.

If the headset is connected via HFP or HSP (for calls), switch the connection to A2DP (for music) with the connected device.

When listening to music from a computer, sound quality may be poor for the first few seconds. This is due to computer specifications and is not a malfunction. If it does not improve, use the computer to establish an A2DP connection.

If [Connect to 2 devices simultaneously] is turned on in the app, the LDAC codec cannot be used. For the highest quality playback, turn this feature off.

If you are experiencing frequent sound skipping, try these suggestions:

Set the headset to “Priority on stable connection” mode using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

Remove any obstacles between the antenna of the connecting Bluetooth device and the built-in antenna of the headset (located in the left earcup).

Bluetooth communications may be affected if there is a human body, metal, or a wall between the headset and device, or in areas with wireless LAN or microwave ovens.

If you are near a wireless LAN device (which uses the same 2.4 GHz frequency band), move at least 10m (30 feet) away or turn the wireless LAN device off.

If enjoying music on a smartphone, shut down unnecessary apps or restart the phone.

Connect the headset and the Bluetooth device once again.

If you feel the noise canceling is insufficient, please check the following:

Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on.

Adjust the headset to ensure a comfortable and secure fit on your ears.

The noise canceling function is most effective in low-frequency ranges (like airplanes, trains, offices) and is less effective for higher frequencies (like human voices).

Check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off. When this feature is on, the noise canceling function may become insufficient depending on the detected activity.

If you are unable to pair your SONY WH-1000XM4 with a device, try these steps:

Bring the headset and the Bluetooth device within 1 meter (3 feet) of each other.

To pair a second or subsequent device, you must manually enter pairing mode. Press and hold the (power) button of the headset for 7 seconds or more.

If you are pairing a device again after initializing or repairing the headset, the device (e.g., an iPhone) might still retain the old pairing information. In this case, delete the pairing information for the headset from the device and then pair them again.

If your headset is not operating correctly, please check the following:

You cannot operate the touch sensor control panel when not wearing the headset. Wear the headset to operate it.

Wearing detection may not work properly if the headset is worn incorrectly (e.g., upside down, over a cap or scarf). Wear the headset correctly with your ears inside the earpads.

Reset the headset. This operation does not delete pairing information.

If resetting the headset does not solve the problem, initialize the headset. This will restore it to factory settings and delete all pairing information.

If you cannot hear the other person during a call, try these steps:

Check that both the headset and the connected device are turned on.

Turn up the volume of the connected device and the headset.

Check the audio settings of the Bluetooth device to make sure the sound is outputting from the headset during a call.

Use the Bluetooth device to re-establish the connection. Ensure you select HFP or HSP for the profile.

If you are listening to music, stop playback and tap the touch sensor control panel twice quickly to respond to an incoming call.

The touch sensor is built into the flat surface of the right unit. If it’s not responding correctly, consider the following:

The panel may not work correctly depending on the angle at which the headset is worn or the direction your head is facing.

When you swipe your finger forward/backward, make the movements perpendicular to the headband.

When you swipe your finger up/down, make the movements parallel to the headband.

If the headset cannot be turned on or operated, you can reset it. This action will not delete device pairing information.

1. Connect the headset to a power source using the USB Type-C cable to begin charging.

2. While charging, press both the (power) button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously.

The headset will be reset. If the headset does not operate correctly even after resetting, initialize the headset.

If the headset does not operate correctly even after resetting, initialize the headset. This operation resets volume settings to factory defaults and deletes all pairing information.

1. Turn off the headset and ensure the USB Type-C cable is disconnected.

2. Press and hold the (power) button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously for 7 seconds or more.

The indicator (blue) will flash 4 times, and the headset will be initialized.

After initializing, you will need to delete the pairing information for the headset from any connected devices and pair them again.

Note: If you have updated the software, it will be retained even after initialization. If you changed the language of the voice guidance, it will also return to the factory setting.
