To ensure safe operation of your SONY STR-DE535 receiver, please follow these precautions:

On Safety:

Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the receiver and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.

On Power Sources:

• Before operating the receiver, check that the operating voltage is identical with your local power supply. The operating voltage is indicated on the nameplate at the rear of the receiver.

• The receiver is not disconnected from the AC power source (MAINS) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the receiver itself has been turned off.

• If you are not going to use the receiver for a long time, be sure to disconnect the receiver from the wall outlet. To disconnect the AC power cord, grasp the plug itself; never pull the cord.

• One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the purpose of safety and will fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer.

• Should the AC power cord need to be changed, have it done at a qualified service shop only.

On Placement:

• Place the receiver in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent heat build-up and prolong the life of the receiver.

• Do not place the receiver near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or mechanical shock.

• Do not place anything on top of the cabinet that might block the ventilation holes and cause malfunctions.

On Operation:

• Before connecting other components, be sure to turn off and unplug the receiver.

On Cleaning:

• Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.

To receive radio broadcasts, connect the supplied AM and FM antennas to your SONY STR-DE535 receiver.

FM Antenna Hookup:

1. Connect the supplied FM wire antenna to the FM 75 ohm COAXIAL terminal on the rear of the receiver.

2. After connecting the wire antenna, keep it as horizontal as possible for best reception.

3. For improved FM reception, you can use a 75-ohm coaxial cable (not supplied) to connect the receiver to an outdoor FM antenna.

AM Antenna Hookup:

1. Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM terminals on the rear of the receiver.

2. For improved AM reception, you can connect a 20 to 50 ft. (6 to 15-meter) insulated wire (not supplied) to the AM antenna terminal in addition to the AM loop antenna. Extend this wire outdoors and keep it horizontal.

Connecting a Ground Wire:

If you connect the receiver to an outdoor antenna, ground it against lightning. To prevent a gas explosion, do not connect the ground wire to a gas pipe. The SIGNAL GND terminal should not be used for grounding the receiver.

You can connect various audio components like a CD player, turntable, or MD/Tape deck to your SONY STR-DE535 receiver. Use standard audio cords (not supplied), matching the White (L) and Red (R) plugs to the corresponding jacks.

CD Player:

Connect the LINE OUTPUT jacks (L and R) on the CD player to the AUDIO IN CD jacks (L and R) on the receiver.

Turntable (not available on STR-DE435):

1. Connect the LINE OUTPUT jacks (L and R) on the turntable to the AUDIO IN PHONO jacks (L and R) on the receiver.

2. If your turntable has an earth lead (ground wire), connect it to the ground terminal on the receiver to prevent hum.

MD Recorder or Tape Deck:

1. Connect the LINE OUTPUT jacks (L and R) on the MD/Tape deck to the IN jacks under MD/TAPE on the receiver.

2. Connect the LINE INPUT jacks (L and R) on the MD/Tape deck to the REC OUT jacks under MD/TAPE on the receiver.

CONTROL A1 II Connection (STR-DE535 only):

If you have a CONTROL A1 II-compatible Sony CD player, MD recorder, or tape deck, use a CONTROL A1 II cord (not supplied) to connect the CTRL A1 II jack on the component to the CTRL A1 II jack on the receiver.

To enjoy audio and video from sources like a TV tuner, VCR, or DVD player through your SONY STR-DE535, follow these connection steps. Use audio/video cables (not supplied) with Yellow (video), White (left audio), and Red (right audio) plugs.

TV Tuner or Satellite Receiver:

1. Connect the VIDEO OUTPUT jack on your TV tuner/Satellite receiver to the TV/SAT VIDEO IN jack on the receiver.

2. Connect the AUDIO OUTPUT jacks (L and R) on your TV tuner/Satellite receiver to the TV/SAT AUDIO IN jacks (L and R) on the receiver.

VCR:

1. Connect the VIDEO OUTPUT jack on the VCR to the VIDEO IN jack under VIDEO on the receiver.

2. Connect the AUDIO OUTPUT jacks (L and R) on the VCR to the AUDIO IN jacks (L and R) under VIDEO on the receiver.

3. To record from the receiver to the VCR, connect the VIDEO OUT jack under VIDEO on the receiver to the VIDEO INPUT jack on the VCR.

4. Connect the AUDIO OUT jacks (L and R) under VIDEO on the receiver to the AUDIO INPUT jacks (L and R) on the VCR.

TV Monitor (except STR-SE491):

Connect the VIDEO OUT jack under MONITOR on the receiver to the VIDEO INPUT jack on your TV monitor using a video cable (not supplied).

DVD Player / AC-3 Decoder:

1. Connect the FRONT, REAR, CENTER, and WOOFER audio output jacks from your decoder to the corresponding 5.1 CH/DVD input jacks on the receiver using audio cables.

2. Connect the VIDEO OUTPUT from your DVD player to the 5.1 CH/DVD VIDEO IN jack on the receiver using a video cable.

To enjoy surround sound with your SONY STR-DE535, you will need front, center, and rear speakers, plus an active woofer. Use speaker cord (not supplied) for connections.

Preparing Speaker Cords:

Twist the stripped ends of the speaker cord about 2/3 inch (15 mm). Be sure to match the speaker cord to the appropriate terminals: (+) to (+) and (–) to (–). If the cords are reversed, the sound will be distorted and lack bass.

Connecting Speakers:

• Front Speakers: Connect the right front speaker to the SPEAKERS FRONT A (R) terminals and the left front speaker to the SPEAKERS FRONT A (L) terminals. If you have a second pair of front speakers, connect them to the SPEAKERS FRONT B terminals.

• Center Speaker: Connect the center speaker to the SPEAKERS CENTER terminals.

• Rear Speakers: Connect the right rear speaker to the SPEAKERS REAR (R) terminals and the left rear speaker to the SPEAKERS REAR (L) terminals.

• Active Woofer: Connect the input of your active woofer to the WOOFER AUDIO OUT jack on the receiver using a monaural audio cable.

Important Precautions:

• To avoid short-circuiting, make sure the stripped ends of each speaker cord do not touch another speaker terminal or the stripped end of another speaker cord.

• Avoid stripped cords touching each other due to excessive removal of insulation.

Set the IMPEDANCE SELECTOR switch on the rear of your SONY STR-DE535 to match the nominal impedance of your front speakers. This information is usually printed on a label on the back of the speaker.

Note: Be sure to connect front speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms or higher if you want to select both sets of front speakers (A+B).

Before using your SONY STR-DE535 for the first time, or if you want to reset all settings to their factory defaults, follow these steps to clear the receiver’s memory:

1. Turn off the receiver by pressing the I/ (power) switch.

2. Press and hold the I/ (power) switch for more than 4 seconds.

3. “ALL CLEAR” will appear in the display, indicating that the memory has been cleared. This action resets or clears the following:

• All preset radio stations.

• All sound field parameters.

• All index names for preset stations and program sources.

• All adjustments made with the SET UP button.

• The sound field memorized for each program source and preset station.

To get the best performance from Dolby Surround encoded software on your SONY STR-DE535, you need to select the proper center mode and adjust the speaker volumes.

Step 1: Select the Center Mode

1. Press SET UP on the front panel.

2. Press MENU < or > repeatedly until “CTR MODE” appears in the display.

3. Use the + or – buttons to select the center mode that matches your speaker configuration:

Step 2: Adjust Speaker Volume with Test Tone

1. Make sure the center mode is correctly set.

2. Press SOUND FIELD ON/OFF to turn on the sound field.

3. Press SOUND FIELD MODE +/– repeatedly to select “PRO LOGIC.”

4. Press TEST TONE on the supplied remote. A test tone will be output from each speaker sequentially.

5. From your listening position, adjust the volume levels so that the test tone sounds the same from each speaker:

• Use the BALANCE control on the main unit to adjust the balance of the front right and left speakers.

• Use the LEVEL CENTER +/– buttons on the remote to adjust the center speaker volume.

• Use the LEVEL REAR +/– buttons on the remote to adjust the rear speakers’ volume.

6. Press TEST TONE on the remote again to turn off the test tone.

The adjustment range of the rear speakers on your SONY STR-DE535 is preset from -15 to +10. You can shift this range up by 5 levels (to -10 to +15) by following these steps:

1. Press SET UP.

2. Press MENU < or > repeatedly until “REAR GAIN” appears in the display.

3. Press + or – to select “GAIN UP”.

To restore the normal output level, repeat the procedure and select “GAIN NORM” in step 3.

You can tune in radio stations on your SONY STR-DE535 either by entering the frequency directly or by scanning for stations.

Direct Tuning (if you know the frequency):

1. Press I/ (power) to turn on the receiver.

2. Press TUNER.

3. Press FM or AM to select the desired band.

4. Press DIRECT.

5. Use the numeric buttons (0-9) to enter the station’s frequency.

6. For AM stations, adjust the position of the AM loop antenna for best reception.

Automatic Tuning (scanning for stations):

1. Press TUNER.

2. Press FM or AM to select the desired band.

3. Press TUNING + or –. The receiver will scan up (+) or down (–) the frequency band and stop when it finds a station. Press the button again to continue scanning.

Your SONY STR-DE535 can store up to 30 of your favorite FM or AM stations as presets. Presets are identified by a character (A, B, or C) and a number (0-9).

1. Tune in the station you want to preset.

2. Press MEMORY. “MEMORY” will appear in the display for a few seconds.

3. Before “MEMORY” disappears, press SHIFT to select a character (A, B, or C).

4. While “MEMORY” is still displayed, press one of the numeric buttons (0-9) to assign a number.

5. The station is now stored. Repeat these steps to preset other stations.

To tune to a preset station, press TUNER, then press SHIFT to select the character (A, B, C) and then press the number for the station you want to hear.

You can enjoy various surround sound effects by selecting one of the pre-programmed sound fields on your SONY STR-DE535.

1. Press the SOUND FIELD ON/OFF button to turn on the sound field feature. The current sound field is shown in the display.

2. Press the SOUND FIELD MODE +/– button repeatedly to cycle through and select the sound field you want.

Here are the available sound fields:

* STR-DE535 only.

** When using 5.1 CH/DVD only.

You can adjust various parameters of the sound fields on your SONY STR-DE535 to suit your listening preferences. Customized settings are stored until the receiver is unplugged for about a week.

Changing Delay Time (PRO LOGIC only):

1. Start playing a Dolby Surround encoded source.

2. Press SUR.

3. Press MENU to select “DELAY xxms.”

4. Press +/– to change the delay time (15, 20, or 30 ms).

Changing Effect Level (all sound fields except PRO LOGIC):

1. Press SUR.

2. Press MENU to select “EFFECT xx.”

3. Press +/– to change the effect level (six levels available).

Adjusting Rear/Center Speaker Volume:

1. Press SUR.

2. Press MENU to select “REAR xxdB” or “CENTER xxdB.”

3. Press +/– to adjust the volume from -15 dB to +10 dB.

Adjusting Tone (Bass/Treble):

1. Press BASS/TREBLE.

2. Press MENU to select “BASS xxdB” or “TREBLE xxdB.”

3. Press +/– to adjust the tone level from -10 dB to +10 dB.

4. Press TONE to activate the adjustment. The TONE indicator will light up.

Resetting Customized Sound Fields:

1. Turn off the receiver.

2. Hold down SOUND FIELD ON/OFF and press the I/ (power) button.

3. “SUR CLEAR” will appear in the display, and all sound fields will be reset to their factory settings.

Your SONY STR-DE535 allows you to record from one component to another.

Recording on a MiniDisc or Audio Tape:

1. Press one of the function buttons (e.g., CD, TV/SAT) to select the program source you want to record.

2. Set the source component to be ready for playing (e.g., insert a CD).

3. Insert a blank disc or tape into your recording deck (connected to the MD/TAPE jacks) and adjust the recording level if necessary.

4. Start recording on the recording deck, and then start playback on the source component.

Recording on a Video Tape:

1. Press TV/SAT to select the program source.

2. Set the component to be ready for playing (e.g., turn on the TV and TV tuner).

3. Insert a blank video tape into the VCR for recording.

4. Start recording on the VCR.

You can also replace audio while editing a video tape by pressing another function button (e.g., CD) during recording to overdub the sound from that new source.

You can set the SONY STR-DE535 to turn off automatically after a specified time using the SLEEP button on the remote control.

While the power is on, press the SLEEP button on the remote repeatedly. Each press changes the time before the receiver turns off. The sequence is as follows:

2:00:00 → 1:30:00 → 1:00:00 → 0:30:00 → OFF

After you set the time, the display will dim. To check the remaining time, press the SLEEP button once.

If you experience no sound or very low sound from your SONY STR-DE535, please check the following:

• Check that the speakers and components are connected securely.

• Make sure you have selected the correct component on the receiver.

• Make sure you have set the SPEAKERS selector correctly (A, B, or A+B).

• Press the MUTING button if the MUTING indicator is on.

• If “PROTECTOR” is flashing, the protective device on the receiver has been activated due to a short circuit. Turn off the receiver, eliminate the short-circuit problem (e.g., check speaker wiring), and then turn the power back on.

If you cannot obtain a surround effect with your SONY STR-DE535, check these points:

• Make sure you have turned on the sound field function by pressing the SOUND FIELD ON/OFF button.

• Ensure that the front speakers are connected to the SPEAKERS A terminals.

• If you are using two sets of front speakers, make sure that both the A and B buttons for the SPEAKERS selector are depressed.

If you are having trouble tuning in radio stations on your SONY STR-DE535, try the following solutions:

• Check that the AM and FM antennas are connected securely. Adjust the antennas or connect an outdoor antenna if necessary.

• The station’s signal may be too weak for automatic tuning. Try tuning in the station directly by entering its frequency.

• Make sure the tuning interval is set correctly for your region when tuning AM stations.

• If you are trying to scan preset stations, ensure that stations have been preset first.

If the remote control for your SONY STR-DE535 is not functioning, please check the following:

• Point the remote directly at the remote sensor on the front of the receiver.

• Remove any obstacles that might be blocking the path between the remote and the receiver.

• Replace the batteries in the remote with new ones if they are weak.

• Make sure you have selected the correct function on the remote for the component you are trying to control.

Dolby Pro Logic Surround is a method of decoding that produces four channels of sound from a two-channel audio source. Compared to the former Dolby Surround system, Dolby Pro Logic Surround reproduces left-to-right panning more naturally and localizes sounds more precisely. To take full advantage of Dolby Pro Logic Surround, you should have one pair of rear speakers and a center speaker. The rear speakers output monaural sound.

Dolby Digital (AC-3) is a sound format for movie theaters that is more advanced than Dolby Pro Logic Surround. In this format, the rear speakers output stereo sound with an expanded frequency range, and a separate subwoofer channel is provided for deep bass. This format is also called “5.1” because the subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel. All six channels in this format are recorded separately to realize superior channel separation, and since all signals are processed digitally, there is less signal degradation.
