To ensure safe operation of your SONY STR-DE435 receiver, please follow these precautions:

On Safety:

Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the receiver and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.

On Power Sources:

• Before operating the receiver, check that the operating voltage is identical with your local power supply. The operating voltage is indicated on the nameplate at the rear of the receiver.

• The receiver is not disconnected from the AC power source (MAINS) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the receiver itself has been turned off.

• If you are not going to use the receiver for a long time, be sure to disconnect the receiver from the wall outlet. To disconnect the AC power cord, grasp the plug itself; never pull the cord.

• One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the purpose of safety and will fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer.

• Should the AC power cord need to be changed, have it done at a qualified service shop only.

On Placement:

• Place the receiver in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent heat build-up and prolong the life of the receiver.

• Do not place the receiver near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or mechanical shock.

• Do not place anything on top of the cabinet that might block the ventilation holes and cause malfunctions.

On Operation:

• Before connecting other components, be sure to turn off and unplug the receiver.

On Cleaning:

• Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.

The SONY STR-DE435 has the following features compared to the STR-DE535 and STR-SE491 models:

Based on this table, the SONY STR-DE435 does not have a PHONO input for a turntable or the CONTROL A1 II feature.

For FM Reception:

1. Connect the supplied FM wire antenna to the FM 75 ohm COAXIAL terminal on the back of the receiver.

2. After connecting, extend the wire antenna and keep it as horizontal as possible for best reception.

3. If you have poor FM reception, you can use a 75-ohm coaxial cable (not supplied) to connect the receiver to an outdoor FM antenna.

For AM Reception:

1. Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM antenna terminals.

2. If you have poor AM reception, you can also connect a 20 to 50 ft. (6 to 15-meter) insulated wire (not supplied) to the AM antenna terminal in addition to the loop antenna. Extend this wire outdoors and keep it horizontal.

Connecting a Ground Wire:

If you connect the receiver to an outdoor antenna, it is important to ground it against lightning. Connect a ground wire from the ground terminal to a proper earth ground. To prevent a gas explosion, do not connect the ground wire to a gas pipe.

Follow these general tips before starting:

• Turn off the power to all components before making connections.

• Make connections firmly to avoid hum and noise.

• Match the color-coded pins to the appropriate jacks: White for left audio, Red for right audio.

Connecting a CD Player:

Use an audio cord (not supplied). Connect the LINE OUTPUT L (White) and R (Red) jacks on the CD player to the AUDIO IN CD L (White) and R (Red) jacks on the SONY STR-DE435 receiver.

Connecting an MD Recorder or Tape Deck:

You will need two audio cords (not supplied).

1. Connect the LINE OUTPUT L and R jacks on the MD/Tape deck to the IN L and R jacks under MD/TAPE on the receiver.

2. Connect the REC OUT L and R jacks under MD/TAPE on the receiver to the LINE INPUT L and R jacks on the MD/Tape deck.

Note: The SONY STR-DE435 does not have a PHONO input, so you cannot connect a turntable directly to it.

Before connecting, ensure all components are powered off. Use audio/video cables (not supplied) and match the colors: Yellow for video, White for left audio, and Red for right audio.

Connecting a TV Tuner or Satellite Receiver:

1. Connect the VIDEO OUTPUT jack (Yellow) on the TV tuner/satellite receiver to the VIDEO IN jack under TV/SAT on the receiver.

2. Connect the AUDIO OUTPUT L (White) and R (Red) jacks on the TV tuner/satellite receiver to the AUDIO IN L and R jacks under TV/SAT on the receiver.

Connecting a VCR for Playback and Recording:

1. Connect the VIDEO OUTPUT and AUDIO OUTPUT (L and R) jacks on the VCR to the VIDEO IN and AUDIO IN (L and R) jacks under VIDEO on the receiver.

2. Connect the VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT (L and R) jacks under VIDEO on the receiver to the VIDEO INPUT and AUDIO INPUT (L and R) jacks on the VCR.

Connecting a TV Monitor:

Use a video cable (not supplied). Connect the MONITOR VIDEO OUT jack (Yellow) on the receiver to the VIDEO INPUT jack (Yellow) on your TV monitor.

1. Prepare Speaker Cords:

Twist the stripped ends of the speaker cord (not supplied) about 2/3 inch (15 mm). Be sure to match the speaker cord to the appropriate terminals on the components: (+) to (+) and (–) to (–). If the cords are reversed, the sound will be distorted and lack bass.

2. Select Speaker Impedance:

Set the IMPEDANCE SELECTOR on the rear of the receiver according to your front speakers’ nominal impedance.

• Between 4 and 8 ohms: Set to 4Ω

• 8 ohms or higher: Set to 8Ω

Note: If you plan to use both A and B front speakers simultaneously, you must use speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms or higher.

3. Connect Speakers:

• Front Speakers: Connect your main front left and right speakers to the SPEAKERS FRONT A terminals. If you have a second pair of front speakers, connect them to the SPEAKERS FRONT B terminals.

• Center Speaker: Connect the center speaker to the SPEAKERS CENTER terminals.

• Rear Speakers: Connect the rear left and right speakers to the SPEAKERS REAR terminals.

• Active Woofer: Connect the WOOFER AUDIO OUT jack on the receiver to the INPUT jack on your active (powered) woofer using a monaural audio cable (not supplied).

Important: To avoid short-circuiting, ensure the stripped ends of each speaker cord do not touch another speaker terminal or the stripped end of another speaker cord.

If you want to clear all customized settings and presets from the receiver’s memory, follow this procedure:

1. Press the I/POWER button to turn off the receiver.

2. Press and hold the I/POWER button for more than 4 seconds.

3. “ALL CLEAR” will appear in the display, indicating that the memory has been cleared.

This procedure will reset the following:

• All preset radio stations.

• All sound field parameters.

• All index names for preset stations and program sources.

• All adjustments made with the SET UP button.

• The sound field memorized for each program source and preset station.

To get the best surround effect, you need to select the proper center mode and adjust the speaker volumes.

Step 1: Select the Center Mode

This setting configures the receiver for your specific speaker setup.

1. Press the SET UP button on the front panel.

2. Press the MENU < or > buttons repeatedly until “CTR MODE” appears in the display.

3. Use the + or – buttons to select the center mode that matches your speaker configuration:

Step 2: Adjust Speaker Volume with the Test Tone

This feature helps you balance the volume of your center and rear speakers with your front speakers.

1. Make sure the center mode is correctly set.

2. Press SOUND FIELD ON/OFF to turn on the sound field.

3. Press SOUND FIELD MODE +/- repeatedly to select “PRO LOGIC.”

4. Press TEST TONE on the supplied remote. You will hear a test tone cycling through each speaker.

5. While seated in your listening position, adjust the volume levels so the test tone sounds equally loud from each speaker:

• Front Speakers Balance: Use the BALANCE control on the front of the receiver.

• Center Speaker Volume: Use the LEVEL CENTER +/- buttons on the remote.

• Rear Speakers Volume: Use the LEVEL REAR +/- buttons on the remote.

6. Press TEST TONE on the remote again to turn off the test tone.

You can tune in stations either by entering the frequency directly or by scanning.

Direct Tuning (if you know the frequency):

1. Press TUNER to select the tuner function.

2. Press FM or AM to select the desired band.

3. Press DIRECT.

4. Use the numeric buttons (0-9) to enter the station’s frequency. For example, for FM 102.50 MHz, press 1, 0, 2, 5, 0.

5. For AM stations, adjust the position of the AM loop antenna for the best reception.

Automatic Tuning (scanning for stations):

1. Press TUNER.

2. Press FM or AM.

3. Press TUNING + or -. The receiver will scan up (+) or down (-) the frequency band and stop when it finds a station. Press the button again to continue scanning.

You can store up to 30 FM or AM stations as presets. Presets are identified by a character (A, B, or C) and a number (0-9).

Presetting a Station:

1. Tune in the station you want to preset.

2. Press MEMORY. The word “MEMORY” will appear in the display for a few seconds.

3. While “MEMORY” is displayed, press SHIFT to select a character (A, B, or C).

4. While “MEMORY” is still displayed, press one of the numeric buttons (0-9) to assign the preset number.

5. The station is now stored. Repeat steps 1-4 to preset other stations.

Tuning to a Preset Station:

1. Press TUNER.

2. Press SHIFT to select the character (A, B, or C).

3. Press the numeric button (0-9) for the station you want to hear.

Alternatively, you can press PRESET TUNING + or – to scan through all your preset stations sequentially.

The SONY STR-DE435 offers pre-programmed sound fields to enhance your listening experience for movies, music, and games.

1. Press the SOUND FIELD ON/OFF button to activate the surround sound mode. The current sound field will be shown in the display.

2. Press the SOUND FIELD MODE +/- button repeatedly to cycle through the available sound fields and select the one you want.

The available sound fields are:

** When using 5.1 CH/DVD only.

Note: When using sound fields, do not select both speakers (A+B) with the SPEAKERS selector.

You can adjust various parameters to tailor the sound fields to your preference.

Changing the Delay Time (PRO LOGIC only):

1. Start playing a source with Dolby Surround sound.

2. Press SUR.

3. Press MENU to select “DELAY xxms.”

4. Press +/- to change the delay time (15, 20, or 30 ms).

Changing the Effect Level (all sound fields except PRO LOGIC):

1. Press SUR.

2. Press MENU to select “EFFECT xx.”

3. Press +/- to change the surround effect level (six levels available).

Adjusting the Rear/Center Speaker Volume:

1. Press SUR.

2. Press MENU to select “REAR xxdB” or “CENTER xxdB.”

3. Press +/- to adjust the volume level from -15 dB to +10 dB.

Adjusting the Tone (Bass/Treble):

1. Press BASS/TREBLE.

2. Press MENU to select “BASS xxdB” or “TREBLE xxdB.”

3. Press +/- to adjust the tone level from -10 dB to +10 dB.

4. Press TONE so the TONE indicator lights up. You can press TONE again to temporarily disable the adjustment without erasing it.

Resetting Customized Sound Fields:

1. Turn off the receiver.

2. Hold down SOUND FIELD ON/OFF and press I/POWER. “SUR CLEAR” will appear in the display, and all sound fields will reset to their factory settings.

Recording on a MiniDisc or Audio Tape:

1. Press one of the function buttons (e.g., CD, TV/SAT) to select the program source you want to record.

2. Prepare the source component for playback (e.g., insert a CD into the CD player).

3. Insert a blank disc or tape into your MD recorder or tape deck (which should be connected to the MD/TAPE IN/OUT jacks).

4. Start recording on the recording deck, then start playback on the source component.

Recording on a Video Tape:

1. Press TV/SAT to select the program source.

2. Set the component to be ready for playing (e.g., turn on the TV and TV tuner).

3. Insert a blank video tape into the VCR for recording.

4. Start recording on the VCR.

You can also replace the audio on a video tape while editing by selecting a different audio source (like CD) during the recording process. The sound from the new source will be recorded over the original audio.

If there is no sound or only a very low-level sound, check the following:

• Check that all speakers and components are connected securely.

• Make sure you have selected the correct component/input on the receiver.

• Ensure the SPEAKERS selector is set correctly (e.g., to A if your speakers are connected to the FRONT A terminals).

• Press the MUTING button to ensure the sound is not muted. The MUTING indicator should be off.

• If “PROTECTOR” is flashing in the display, the protective device has been activated due to a short circuit. Turn off the receiver, eliminate the short-circuit problem (e.g., check speaker wiring), and turn the power on again.

If no sound is heard from the center speaker:

• Select the appropriate center mode (NORMAL or WIDE).

• Adjust the speaker volume appropriately using the test tone procedure.

If no sound is heard from the rear speakers:

• Select an appropriate center mode that uses rear speakers (e.g., NORMAL, WIDE, PHANTOM).

• Adjust the speaker volume appropriately.

• Make sure the sound field function is turned on.

If you hear severe hum or noise, try these troubleshooting steps:

• Check that the speakers and all components are connected securely.

• Ensure that the connecting audio cords are away from a transformer or motor.

• Keep audio components at least 3 meters (10 feet) away from a TV set or fluorescent light.

• Move your TV away from the audio components.

• The plugs and jacks may be dirty. Wipe them with a cloth slightly moistened with alcohol.

If you are having trouble tuning in radio stations, check these points:

• Ensure that the FM and AM antennas are connected securely. Adjust their position or connect an outdoor antenna if necessary.

• The signal strength of the station may be too weak for automatic tuning. Try tuning in the station directly by entering its frequency.

• If you are trying to scan preset stations, make sure stations have actually been preset into memory.
