To avoid the risk of damage to internal components caused by static electricity and to ensure proper installation, observe the following precautions:

1. Before touching the board, always grasp a metal object (such as a water pipe) to discharge any static electricity.

2. When handling the board, grasp it only by its edges. Avoid touching any electronic components or connectors.

3. Save the bag in which the board was originally shipped for storage or transport.

4. Use a Philips screwdriver suitable for the size of the screw (number 2 screwdriver) to avoid stripping the screw head.

5. Rotate the screwdriver counterclockwise to remove screws and clockwise to tighten them.

6. Remove only the specified screws and be careful not to drop them into the interior of the unit.

7. Do not leave the top cover detached; reattach it after installation.

8. Do not touch printed circuit pathways or connection terminals.

9. Be careful not to cut your hand on the edge of the installation bay.

10. Never use excessive force. If the board doesn’t fit properly, remove it and try again.

1. Before installing any Wave Expansion Board, turn off the power on the ROLAND XV-5080 and all connected devices.

2. Remove only the top panel screws indicated in the diagrams provided in the manual.

3. Remove the cover.

4. Position the board holders correctly (SRX series use the EXP-E through -H slots; SR-JV80 series use the EXP-A through -D slots).

5. Plug the wave expansion board’s connector into the connector at the wave expansion board slot, and simultaneously insert the board holder into the hole in the Wave expansion board.

6. Use the Installation Tool supplied with the Wave Expansion Board to turn the holders in the LOCK direction to fasten the board in place.

7. Use the screws removed in step 2 to fasten the cover back in place.

1. Turn on the power.

2. Press the [SYSTEM] button so the indicator lights up, then press the [F6 (Info)] button to view the System Information page. (If the indicator is blinking, press [SYSTEM/UTILITY] again so it is steadily lit).

3. Verify that the name of the Wave Expansion Board is displayed next to the slot name. If “———-” appears, the board is not recognized properly.

1. Before making connections, ensure that power is turned off for all devices.

2. Connect the supplied AC power cable to the ROLAND XV-5080 and plug the other end into an AC power outlet.

3. Connect audio cables to the A(MIX) OUTPUT jacks and connect MIDI cables to the MIDI IN/OUT terminals as required. If using headphones, plug them into the PHONES jack.

Note: To prevent malfunction or damage, always turn down the volume and turn off the power on all devices before making connections.

Turning On the Power:

1. Check that all devices are connected properly and volume levels are turned down.

2. Turn on the power to connected SCSI devices.

3. Press the ROLAND XV-5080’s [POWER] switch to turn on the power.

4. Turn on the power to connected audio devices.

Turning Off the Power:

1. Confirm volume levels are down and data has been saved.

2. Turn off the power to connected external devices.

3. Press the ROLAND XV-5080’s [POWER] switch to turn off the power.

1. Press the [SYSTEM/UTILITY] button so its indicator starts blinking.

2. Press the [F6 (Menu)] button to select Menu 3.

3. Press the [F1 (Factory)] button. The Factory Reset page will appear.

4. Press [F6 (EXEC)] to execute the Factory Reset.

Note: If the message “Write Protect ON” appears, press [DEC] to set Write Protect to “OFF,” press [F6 (OK)], and then press [F6 (Factory)] again.

1. Hold down [EXIT] and press the left cursor button [ < ].

2. Press the up [ ^ ] or down [ v ] cursor buttons to select the song you wish to hear. Select “Chain of Songs” for successive playback.

3. Press [F6 (Start)] to begin playback.

4. Press [F5 (Stop)] to stop playback.

5. Press [EXIT] to return to the previous mode.

1. Press the [PATCH] button to light the indicator and access the PATCH Play page.

2. Press and hold down the [VOLUME] knob. A phrase prepared for the Patch will play while the knob is pushed.

1. Press the [PATCH] button.

2. Press the [PATCH FINDER] button so the indicator lights up.

3. Press the VALUE dial to open the Category Group window.

4. Rotate the VALUE dial to select a group.

5. Press [F6 (Select)] to call up the Category window.

6. After selecting a category with the VALUE dial, press [F6 (Select)] to display the Patches in that category.

7. Rotate the VALUE dial to move the cursor to the desired Patch.

8. Press the VALUE dial (SOUND LIST) to return to the PATCH PLAY page.

9. Press the [PATCH FINDER] button to extinguish the indicator.

1. Ensure the PATCH PLAY page is displayed.

2. Ensure the [PATCH FINDER] button is extinguished.

3. Press the VALUE dial (SOUND LIST). A list of ten Patches will be displayed.

4. Rotate the VALUE dial to move the cursor to the desired Patch.

5. Press the VALUE dial (SOUND LIST) to return to the PATCH PLAY page.

You can switch modes by pressing the MODE buttons:

PERFORM (Performance Mode): Functions as a multi-timbral sound generator. Used for Performance settings and controlling up to 32 parts.

PATCH (Patch Mode): Functions as a single-patch sound generator. Used to play individual Patches or modify Patch settings.

RHYTHM (Rhythm Set Mode): Used to play Rhythm Sets and modify their settings and effects.

GM (General MIDI2 Mode): Used for playing GM2 compliant music files.

Press the corresponding SOUND LIBRARY button:

USER: Internal rewritable tones created by the user.

CARD: Sounds from a commercially available memory card (SmartMedia) inserted in the MEMORY CARD slot.

PRESET: Sounds permanently stored in the ROLAND XV-5080’s memory.

EXP: Tones stored on installed wave expansion boards. Use the [A]-[H] buttons to select the specific board.

1. Press the [PATCH] button.

2. Press the [SYSTEM] button.

3. Press the [F3 (MIDI)] button.

4. Use the cursor buttons to move to the “Patch/Rhy Rx Channel” setting.

5. Rotate the VALUE dial or press [INC]/[DEC] to set the desired value (e.g., “1”).

6. Press [EXIT] when finished.

1. Press the [PERFORM] button.

2. Press the [PRESET] button.

3. Press the [B] button to select Preset-B Performances.

4. Turn the VALUE dial or press [INC]/[DEC] to select a Performance, such as “PR-B:01 Dulcimar&Gtr.”

1. Select the desired Performance.

2. Press the [RX] button so the indicator lights.

3. Ensure the [1-16/17-32] indicator is dark (for parts 1-16), then press the corresponding PART SELECT button (e.g., [2/18]) to turn the indicator off (Part Off) or on (Part On).

2. Press the [F3 (PART)] button.

3. Press the PART SELECT button corresponding to the part you wish to change (e.g., [2/18] for Part 2).

4. Use the cursor buttons to move the cursor to the Patch Number.

5. Turn the VALUE dial to select the new Patch.

6. Press [EXIT] to return to the PERFORM Play page.

1. Select the Performance you wish to use.

2. Press the [F4 (MIDI)] button.

3. Press the PART SELECT button [1/17]–[16/32] to select the Part you wish to set.

4. Use the cursor buttons to move to the “Receive Channel” setting.

5. Turn the VALUE dial or press [INC]/[DEC] to select the desired MIDI channel.

6. Press [EXIT] to return to the PERFORM Play page.

1. Select the Performance.

2. Press the [F2 (K.Range)] button.

3. Use the cursor buttons to move to “K.L” (Key Low) or “K.U” (Key Upper) for the specific Part.

4. Turn the VALUE dial to select the desired key (e.g., “C5” or “B4”).

5. Press [EXIT] to return to the PERFORM Play page.

To switch Patches via MIDI, match the send channel of the external device with the ROLAND XV-5080 receive channel, then send the appropriate Bank Select and Program Change messages.

Patch Bank Select Map:

To switch Performances, send Bank Select and Program Change messages on the Performance Control Channel (default is 16).

Performance Bank Select Map:

1. Press the [EFFECTS ON/OFF] button to light the indicator.

2. Press the [F2]-[F5] button corresponding to the effect you want to switch (MFX, Chorus, Reverb, EQ).

3. Press the [EFFECTS ON/OFF] button again to exit the window.

SIMMs must match the following specifications:

Number of pins: 72

Access time: 60 ns or faster

Access protocol: FPM or EDO

Voltage: 5 V

Capacity: 64 MB / 32 MB / 16 MB (can be mixed)

Height: 36 mm or lower

* Both parity and non-parity are supported.

1. Turn off the power and disconnect all cables.

2. Detach the cover on the top of the unit.

3. Identify the slots. If installing one card, use Slot A. If installing two cards, use Slot A then B.

4. Insert the SIMM at an angle into the slot, ensuring the notch orientation is correct.

5. Push up on the SIMM until it stands upright and is held by the silver latches.

6. Repeat for the second SIMM if applicable.

7. Reattach the top cover.

1. Simultaneously push the silver-colored latches on both sides of the slot outwards. The SIMM will release and sit at an angle.

2. Pull the SIMM out of the slot.

1. Press the [SYSTEM/UTILITY] button so it lights steadily (System mode).

2. Press [F6 (Info)].

3. Confirm that the capacity of the SIMM appears next to the slot name.

1. Turn off power to the ROLAND XV-5080 and external devices.

2. Use a SCSI cable to connect the ROLAND XV-5080 and the CD-ROM drive.

3. Set the SCSI ID on the CD-ROM drive (e.g., 3) ensuring it differs from the ROLAND XV-5080 ID (default 1).

4. Set the CD-ROM drive’s terminator to ON.

1. Turn on the CD-ROM drive, then the ROLAND XV-5080.

2. Insert the CD-ROM.

3. Press the [DISK] button.

4. Press [F1 (Load)].

5. Press [F1 (Drive)] and select the CD-ROM volume.

6. Press [F6 (OK)].

7. Select the folder containing the file.

8. Press the right cursor button to display files.

9. Select the Patch to be loaded and press [F5 (Mark)] (or [F4] for all).

10. Press [F6 (Select)].

11. Press [F6 (Load)].

12. Specify the destination User Patch number and press [F6 (OK)] to overwrite and load.

1. At the PATCH PLAY page, select the Patch you want to register.

2. Press the VALUE dial (if Sound List appears, press [F2 (F-List)]).

3. Turn the VALUE dial to select the desired registration destination number.

4. Press the [F3 (Regist)] button.

5. Press [EXIT] to return to the PATCH PLAY page.

1. Press the VALUE dial. If the Sound List appears, press [F2 (F-List)].

2. Turn the VALUE dial or press [INC]/[DEC] to select the desired Patch.

3. Press [EXIT] to return to the previous page.

1. Select a Patch that uses the effect (e.g., PR-A:050 Perky B which uses Rotary).

2. Press [F6 (Effects)].

3. Press [F3 (MFX Ctl)].

4. Use cursor buttons and the VALUE dial to set the Source (e.g., MODULATION), Destination (e.g., SPEED), and Sensitivity (e.g., +63).
