When installing your PIONEER HTP-071, make sure to leave space around the unit for ventilation to improve heat radiation. Allow at least 20 cm at the top, 10 cm at the rear, and 10 cm at each side.

Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation to ensure reliable operation of the product and to protect it from overheating. To prevent fire hazard, the openings should never be blocked or covered with items (such as newspapers, table-cloths, curtains) or by operating the equipment on thick carpet or a bed.

The recommended operating environment temperature and humidity for the PIONEER HTP-071 is +5 °C to +35 °C (+41 °F to +95 °F); less than 85%RH (cooling vents not blocked). Do not install this unit in a poorly ventilated area, or in locations exposed to high humidity or direct sunlight (or strong artificial light).

The STANDBY/ON switch on the PIONEER HTP-071 does not completely shut off all power from the AC outlet. Since the power cord serves as the main disconnect device for the unit, you must unplug it from the AC outlet to shut down all power. Therefore, make sure the unit has been installed so that the power cord can be easily unplugged from the AC outlet in case of an accident.

Please check that you have received the following supplied accessories with your PIONEER HTP-071:

• Remote control

• AAA size IEC R03 dry cell batteries (to confirm system operation) x2

• AM loop antenna

• FM wire antenna

• These operating instructions

When installing your PIONEER HTP-071, make sure to put it on a level and stable surface. Do not install it in the following places:

• on a color TV (the screen may distort)

• near a cassette deck (or close to a device that gives off a magnetic field), as this may interfere with the sound

• in direct sunlight

• in damp or wet areas

• in extremely hot or cold areas

• in places where there is vibration or other movement

• in places that are very dusty

• in places that have hot fumes or oils (such as a kitchen)

Follow this procedure to make connections and settings for your PIONEER HTP-071:

1. **Connecting the speakers:** Where you place the speakers will have a big effect on the sound. This includes placing and connecting the speakers.

2. **Connecting the components:** For surround sound, connect your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player to the receiver using a digital connection. This includes connecting to a TV, other playback components, and antennas, then plugging in the receiver.

3. **Power On:** Make sure you’ve set the video input on your TV to this receiver.

4. **The FL Demo Mode menu:** Turn off the demo display on the front panel if you do not want it to show.

5. **Playing a source:** Select the audio input signal and choose the listening mode.

6. **Adjusting the sound as desired:** Use features like Sound Retriever, Phase Control, surround back channel processing, Up Mix function, Audio options, and the Speaker Setup menu to fine-tune your audio.

Insert the two supplied AAA batteries into the remote control, ensuring the plus (+) and minus (-) sides of the batteries are aligned properly according to the marks in the battery case.

The included batteries are for checking initial operations and may not last long. It is recommended to use alkaline batteries for a longer life.

The remote control for the PIONEER HTP-071 should be used within a range of 7 meters (23 ft.) and within a 30-degree angle of the receiver’s remote sensor. The remote control may not work properly if there are obstacles between it and the sensor, if direct sunlight or fluorescent light is shining on the sensor, if the receiver is near a device emitting infrared rays, or if it is operated simultaneously with another infrared remote control unit.

To get the best sound from your PIONEER HTP-071 system, follow these speaker placement guidelines:

• The subwoofer can be placed on the floor. Other speakers should be at about ear-level when listening.

• For the best stereo effect, place the front speakers 2 m to 3 m (6 ft. to 9 ft.) apart, at an equal distance from the TV.

• If placing speakers around a CRT TV, use shielded speakers or place them at a sufficient distance to avoid screen distortion.

• Place the center speaker above or below the TV so the sound is localized at the TV screen.

• Angle the speakers towards the listening position. The angle depends on the room size; use less of an angle for bigger rooms.

• Surround and surround back speakers should be positioned 60 cm to 90 cm (2 ft. to 3 ft.) higher than your ears and tilted slightly downward. Ensure they don’t face each other.

• If surround speakers cannot be set directly to the side in a 7.1-channel system, the surround effect can be enhanced by turning off the Up Mix function.

• Avoid placing surround speakers farther away from the listening position than the front and center speakers.

• Make sure all speakers are securely installed to improve sound quality and reduce the risk of damage or injury.

To connect speakers using bare wire connections to your PIONEER HTP-071:

1. Push open the tabs on the speaker terminal.

2. Insert the exposed wire fully into the terminal.

3. Release the tabs to secure the wire.

Ensure the speaker on the right is connected to the right (R) terminal and the speaker on the left to the left (L) terminal. Also, make sure the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on the receiver match those on the speakers. Be sure to complete all connections before connecting the unit to AC power.

To connect the AM and FM antennas to your PIONEER HTP-071:

AM Loop Antenna:

1. Push open the tabs on the AM antenna terminal, insert one wire fully into each terminal, then release the tabs to secure the wires.

2. Fix the AM loop antenna to the attached stand by bending the stand as indicated and clipping the loop onto it.

3. Place the AM antenna on a flat surface in a direction that provides the best reception.

FM Wire Antenna:

4. Connect the FM wire antenna into the FM antenna socket. For best results, extend the FM antenna fully and fix it to a wall or door frame. Do not drape it loosely or leave it coiled up.

To improve FM reception:

Use a PAL connector (not supplied) to connect an external FM antenna.

To improve AM reception:

Connect a 5 m to 6 m (16 ft. to 20 ft.) length of vinyl-coated wire to the AM antenna terminal without disconnecting the supplied AM loop antenna. For the best possible reception, suspend this wire horizontally outdoors.

Here are the basic instructions for playing a source (such as a DVD disc) with your PIONEER HTP-071:

1. Switch on your playback component (e.g., DVD player), your TV, and then the receiver.

2. Switch the TV input to the input that connects this receiver.

3. Press the input function buttons on the remote control to select the input function you want to play.

4. Press AUTO/DIRECT on the remote to select ‘AUTO SURROUND’ and start playback of the source.

5. Use MASTER VOLUME to adjust the volume level. Turn down the volume of your TV so that all sound comes from the speakers connected to the receiver.

On the PIONEER HTP-071, the audio input signal can be selected for each input source. Press the SIGNAL SEL button on the remote control to cycle through the available audio input signals corresponding to the selected source component.

• H – Selects an HDMI signal. This can be selected for BD, DVD, DVR/BDR, and CD/SAT inputs.

• C1/O1 – Selects the digital input. C1 is for the coaxial 1 input, and O1 is for the optical 1 audio input.

• A – Selects the analog inputs.

If H (HDMI) or C1/O1 (digital) is selected but the audio input is not provided, the system automatically selects A (analog), except for BD and DVR/BDR inputs.

1. Press TUNER on the remote control to select the tuner.

2. Use BAND to change the band (FM or AM) if necessary. Each press switches between FM (stereo or mono) and AM.

3. Tune to a station using one of the following methods:

• Automatic tuning: Press and hold TUNE up/down for about a second. The receiver will search for the next station.

• Manual tuning: Press TUNE up/down to change the frequency one step at a time.

• High speed tuning: Press and hold TUNE up/down for high speed tuning. Release the button at the desired frequency.

If the TUNE or ST indicators don’t light up when tuning to an FM station because the signal is weak, you can set the PIONEER HTP-071 receiver to mono reception mode. Press the BAND button to select FM MONO. This should improve the sound quality and allow you to enjoy the broadcast.

The PIONEER HTP-071 can memorize up to 30 stations. To save a station:

1. Tune to the station you want to memorize.

2. Press TUNER EDIT on the remote control. The display will show PRESET, then a blinking MEM and station preset number.

3. Press PRESET left/right to select the station preset number you want. You can also use the number buttons.

4. Press ENTER. The preset number will stop blinking, and the receiver will store the station.

To listen to a saved preset station on your PIONEER HTP-071, press the PRESET left/right buttons on the remote control to select the station preset you want. You can also use the number buttons on the remote control to recall the station preset directly.

You can name your preset stations for easier identification on the PIONEER HTP-071.

1. Choose the station preset you want to name.

2. Press TUNER EDIT twice. The cursor at the first character position will blink on the display.

3. Input a name up to eight characters long:

• Use PRESET left/right to select the character position.

• Use TUNE up/down to select characters.

• The name is stored when ENTER is pressed.

You can make an audio recording from the built-in tuner or from an audio source connected via analog audio inputs. Signals from HDMI or digital audio cables cannot be recorded.

1. Press the input function buttons on the remote to select the input function you want to record.

2. If necessary, press SIGNAL SEL and select the analog inputs (A) for the source component.

3. Prepare the source you want to record (e.g., tune to a radio station, load a CD).

4. Prepare the recorder. Insert a blank tape, MD, etc., into the recording device and set the recording levels.

5. Start recording on your recording device, then start playback of the source component on the PIONEER HTP-071.

While listening to a source on your PIONEER HTP-071, press the listening mode buttons on the remote control (AUTO/DIRECT, ALC/STANDARD, ADV SURR, STEREO) repeatedly to select the listening mode you want. The listening mode is shown on the front panel display. The simplest option is the AUTO SURROUND feature; press AUTO/DIRECT repeatedly until AUTO SURROUND shows briefly in the display. The receiver will then automatically detect the source type and select multichannel or stereo playback as necessary.

The PIONEER HTP-071 offers various surround modes for different types of sources and speaker setups. The tables below show the available modes for two-channel and multichannel sources.

To use the Advanced Surround modes on your PIONEER HTP-071, press the ADV SURR button on the remote control. This feature creates a variety of surround effects suitable for different content. The available modes are:

• ACTION: Designed for action movies with dynamic soundtracks.

• DRAMA: Designed for movies with lots of dialog.

• ENT.SHOW: Suitable for musical sources.

• ADVANCED GAME: Suitable for video games.

• SPORTS: Suitable for sports programs.

• CLASSICAL: Gives a large concert hall-type sound.

• ROCK/POP: Creates a live concert sound for rock and/or pop music.

• UNPLUGGED: Suitable for acoustic music sources.

• EXT.STEREO: Gives multichannel sound to a stereo source, using all of your speakers.

• F.S.S.ADVANCE (Front Stage Surround ADVANCE): Creates natural surround sound effects using just the front speakers and the subwoofer.

• PHONES SURR: Provides a surround sound effect when listening through headphones.

Use the Stream Direct modes on the PIONEER HTP-071 when you want the truest possible reproduction of a source, with all unnecessary signal processing bypassed. Press the AUTO/DIRECT button to select one of the following modes:

• AUTO SURROUND: See Auto playback instructions.

• DIRECT: Sources are heard according to the settings made in the Speaker Setup. Phase Control, Sound Delay, Auto Delay, LFE Attenuate and Center image functions are available.

• PURE DIRECT: Analog and PCM sources are heard without any digital processing.

The Sound Retriever feature on the PIONEER HTP-071 uses DSP technology to restore CD quality sound to compressed 2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure and smoothing jagged artifacts. To switch the Sound Retriever (S.RTV) ON or OFF, press the S.RETRIEVER button on the remote control. This feature is only applicable to 2-channel sources.

The Phase Control feature on the PIONEER HTP-071 uses phase correction measures to ensure your sound source arrives at the listening position in phase, preventing unwanted distortion and providing coherent sound reproduction. The default setting is ON. To switch Phase Control (P.CTL) ON or OFF, press the PHASE button on the remote control.

The PIONEER HTP-071 can use 6.1 or 7.1 decoding for appropriately encoded sources. To select a surround back channel processing option, press RECEIVER on the remote, then press SB CH repeatedly to cycle through the options:

• SB ON: Matrix decoding for generating the surround back component from the surround component is turned on.

• SB AUTO: Matrix decoding is switched automatically, performed only when surround back channel signals are detected in the input signals.

• SB OFF: Matrix decoding for generating the surround back component is turned off.

The Up Mix function on the PIONEER HTP-071 is for a 7.1-channel system to mix the sound of the surround speakers with the surround back speakers, so that surround sound is heard from diagonally to the rear. To set the function:

1. Switch the receiver into standby.

2. While holding down PRESET right arrow on the front panel, hold the STANDBY/ON button for about two seconds.

UP MIX: OFF appears, and the function turns off. To turn it on, repeat steps 1 and 2. When set to ON, the (Up Mix) indicator on the front panel lights.

To adjust the Audio options on your PIONEER HTP-071:

1. Press RECEIVER, then press the AUDIO PARAMETER button on the remote.

2. Use the up/down arrows to select the setting you want to adjust.

3. Use the left/right arrows to set it as necessary.

4. Press RETURN to confirm and exit the menu.

To configure the speaker size and number on your PIONEER HTP-071:

1. In the System Setup menu, use the up/down arrows to select ‘SP SETUP’ and press ENTER.

2. Select ‘SP SET’ and press ENTER.

3. Use the up/down arrows to select the speaker set (F, C, S, SB, SW) and then use the left/right arrows to select the size or number:

• F (Front): Do not change from SMALL.

• C (Center): Select SMALL if you have a center speaker, or NO if you don’t.

• S (Surround): Select SMALL if you have surround speakers, or NO if you don’t.

• SB (Surround Back): Select the number of surround back speakers you have (X1 for one, X2 for two) or NO if you have none.

• SW (Subwoofer): Select YES if you have a subwoofer. Choose PLUS if you want the subwoofer to output bass continuously or you want deeper bass. Choose NO if you do not have a subwoofer.

4. When finished, press RETURN.

To adjust the overall balance of your speaker system on the PIONEER HTP-071:

1. From the ‘SP SETUP’ menu, select ‘CH LEVEL’ and press ENTER.

2. Use the left/right arrows to select a setup option:

• T. TONE M: Move the test tone manually from speaker to speaker to adjust individual levels.

• T. TONE A: Adjust levels as the test tone moves automatically from speaker to speaker.

3. Confirm your selection by pressing ENTER. Test tones will start.

4. Use the left/right arrows to adjust the level of each channel. If you selected T. TONE M, use the up/down arrows to switch speakers.

5. When finished, press RETURN.

To specify the distance of your speakers from the listening position on the PIONEER HTP-071:

1. From the ‘SP SETUP’ menu, select ‘SP DISTN’ and press ENTER.

2. Use the up/down arrows to choose the speaker you want to set.

3. Use the left/right arrows to adjust the distance in 0.1 feet increments.

4. When finished, press RETURN.

To set the PIONEER HTP-071 to automatically turn off after a period of no operation:

1. From the System Setup menu, select ‘APD’ and press ENTER.

2. Use the left/right arrows to select 2, 4, or 6 hours, or OFF (no automatic shutoff).

3. When finished, press RETURN.

To turn the front panel demo display on or off on your PIONEER HTP-071:

1. From the System Setup menu, select ‘FL DEMO’ and press ENTER.

2. Use the left/right arrows to choose ON or OFF for the demo display.

3. When finished, press RETURN.

If your PIONEER HTP-071 does not power on, try the following:

• Disconnect the power plug from the outlet, and insert it again.

• Make sure there are no loose strands of speaker wire touching the rear panel, as this could cause the receiver to shut off automatically.

If your PIONEER HTP-071 suddenly switches off, it could be due to the Auto Power Down function. This function automatically turns off the power if the receiver has not been operated for several hours. You can check and change this setting in ‘The Auto Power Down menu’. If the issue persists, wait about a minute, then switch the receiver back on.

If there is no sound from your PIONEER HTP-071 when an input is selected, check the following:

• Use MASTER VOLUME to turn up the volume.

• Press MUTE on the remote control to turn muting off.

• Set the SIGNAL SEL to H (HDMI), C1/01 (digital), or A (analog) according to your connection type.

• Make sure the source component is connected correctly.

• Check the audio output settings of the source component and its instruction manual.

If you have no image output from your PIONEER HTP-071, please check these points:

• Ensure the component is connected correctly.

• Use the same type of video cables for the source component and the TV. Note that video signals from analog inputs will not output from the HDMI terminal, and vice-versa.

• Check that the video input selected on your TV is correct.

• Ensure your connected components are HDCP-compatible. If not, use composite video jacks.

• Try adjusting the resolution or other settings on your source component.

If you can’t operate the PIONEER HTP-071 with its remote control, try the following:

• Replace the batteries.

• Operate within 7 m (23 ft.) and a 30° angle of the remote sensor.

• Remove any obstacles between the remote and the receiver.

• Avoid exposing the remote sensor on the front panel to direct light.

To reset all the PIONEER HTP-071 receiver’s settings to the factory default, use the front panel controls:

1. Switch the receiver into standby.

2. While holding down BAND, press and hold STANDBY/ON for about two seconds.

3. When you see RESET? appear in the display, press AUTO SURROUND/STREAM DIRECT. OK? will show in the display.

4. Press ALC/STANDARD SURR to confirm. OK will appear in the display to indicate that the receiver has been reset.

• To clean your PIONEER HTP-071, use a polishing cloth or dry cloth to wipe off dust and dirt.

• If the surface is dirty, wipe with a soft cloth dipped in some neutral cleanser diluted five or six times with water and wrung out well, then wipe again with a dry cloth. Do not use furniture wax or cleansers.

• Never use thinners, benzine, insecticide sprays, or other chemicals on or near this unit, as these will corrode the surface.
