What is ProPILOT Assist?

ProPILOT Assist is a hands-on driver assistance system intended for limited access expressways and is not designed to be used on city/rural streets. The system is intended to help keep the vehicle in the center of the lane and help maintain a preset distance to the vehicle ahead traveling in the same lane. The two primary features of ProPILOT Assist include Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Steering Assistance. ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link equipped vehicles include Speed Adjust by Route and Speed Limit Assist. ProPILOT Assist 2.0 (if so equipped and subscribed) offers hands-off capability on compatible freeways along with features like Lane Change Assist, Passing Assist, and Route Assist. Driver is responsible for the driving task and must be prepared to steer and brake the vehicle at all times. Vehicles equipped with ProPILOT Assist 2.0 will have two roof mounted antennas.

How do I operate ProPILOT Assist?

  1. Push the ProPILOT Assist switch on the steering wheel.
    • The ProPILOT Assist display appears
    • Safety Shield status screen is temporarily displayed.
  2. Once the vehicle is at the desired speed, push down the cancel switch to the SET- direction.
    • The vehicle will maintain the set speed, unless the vehicle detects a slower vehicle in the traveling lane, or Speed Limit Assist or Speed Adjust by Route is active.
  3. Adjust distance setting using the distance switch, if necessary.
    • Distance will vary based on vehicle speed as this setting is time dependent, not based on vehicle length.

How do I increase speed while using ProPILOT Assist?

  • Push up and hold the CANCEL switch to the RES+ direction to increase speed in 5 mph (5 km/h) increments.
  • Push up and quickly release the CANCEL switch to the RES+ direction to increase speed by 1 mph (1 km/h).
  • Accelerate to new desired speed and press the CANCEL switch to the SET- direction.

How do I decrease speed while using ProPILOT Assist?

  • Push down and hold the CANCEL switch to the SET- direction to decrease speed in 5 mph (5 km/h) increments.
  • Push down and quickly release the CANCEL switch to the SET- direction to decrease speed by 1 mph (1 km/h).

How do I cancel the ProPILOT Assist system?

  • Push the CANCEL switch or tap the brake pedal.
  • These actions will keep the system in standby. To resume, push up the cancel switch to the RES+ direction to return to the original vehicle set speed, or push down the cancel switch to the SET- direction to set the current vehicle speed.

  • Speed Limit Adjust Indicator – Indicates the detected speed limit. “A” indicates Auto mode.
  • Route Assist Indicator – Icon is displayed when Route Assist feature is available.
  • Lane Change Assist Indicator – Icon is displayed when Lane Change Assist feature is available.
  • Lane Marker Indicator – Displays real world lane condition.
  • Blind Spot Detection – Indicates when a vehicle is detected in the blind spot.
  • Surrounding Vehicle Display – Displays other detected vehicles, including passenger vehicles, trucks and motorcycles. The multi-lane display is only available on HD mapped divided highways

What is the set speed range for Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)?

The set speed range is between approximately 20 and 90 mph (30 and 144 km/h). Hands-off driving is only available for speeds up to 85 mph (136 km/h).

How does the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system work?

When a vehicle is detected in the lane ahead, the ICC system helps control the vehicle speed to maintain the distance from the vehicle ahead set by the driver. The system may not detect a vehicle that is already stopped in the traveling lane before it enters the detection zone. The driver must control the vehicle to prevent a collision. When the vehicle ahead decelerates, your vehicle decelerates to maintain the distance from the vehicle ahead set by the driver. Once the vehicle ahead stops, the ICC system will stop your vehicle and keep the vehicle stopped. When the vehicle ahead begins to move, push and release the toggle switch towards RES+ or tap the accelerator pedal if your vehicle has been stopped for more 3 seconds (and up to 30 seconds on the highway). The ICC system starts to follow the vehicle ahead. If your vehicle comes closer to the vehicle ahead due to rapid deceleration of that vehicle or if another vehicle cuts in, the system may warn the driver with a chime and ICC system display. The driver must control the vehicle to prevent a collision. ICC may not operate as expected under all conditions. Always be prepared to brake if needed. For example, vehicles cutting into your lane or approaching stopped traffic may not be detected.

How does the Steering Assist system work?

When the lane markers are clear and consistent on both sides of the vehicle, the Steering Assist system assists the driver to help keep the vehicle within the traveling lane. This feature can operate when vehicle speed is above 37 mph (60 km/h). Below 37 mph (60 km/h), ProPILOT Assist must detect a vehicle ahead in order for steering assistance to activate. With the Steering Assist active, when a curve or strong cross wind exceeds the capabilities of the system and your vehicle approaches either the left or the right side of the traveling lane, the I-LI system will flash the I-LI indicator on the vehicle information display and provide steering wheel vibration to alert the driver.

Under what conditions may Steering Assist cancel or temporarily go into standby mode?

  • The turn signal is activated (for vehicles not equipped with ProPILOT Assist 2.0)
  • Hands are not detected on the steering wheel
  • The system cannot detect clear and consistent lane markers
  • The lane marker has been crossed

How do I turn off Steering Assist?

  • Push the Steering Assist switch on the instrument panel to the left of the steering column or turn it off in the “Driver Assistance” settings under “Lane Centering Assist” in the vehicle information display.

How does the vehicle detect whether the driver has their hands placed on the steering wheel?

The vehicle uses capacitive and torque sensors in the steering wheel to detect whether the driver has their hands placed on the wheel.
