What are the key features of the RoboZap?

The RoboZap is a high-performance, intelligent, special-effect lighting unit which features:

Multi-faceted, asymmetrically mounted, variable-speed rotating mirror

High quality stepper motors

2x250W, 120V ENH lamps

2×4 dichroic colors, plus white and black-out

The speed of the color change is variable and can be individually set for each of the lamps.

Color mixing (adjacent colors)

8 manually selectable gobos for each lamp

Variable speed shutter for strobe effect

Precision optics

Adjustable focus

Efficient dual fan cooling

Can be controlled by Martin 2501 (32 pcs.), 2308 (8 pcs.), 2032 (32 pcs.), 3032 (96 pcs.).

Can be controlled by DMX 512 via Martin Interface.

Can run without controller using built-in random-sequence programmes with and without music trig. (Stand alone)

Built-in microphone for music triggering.

How do I install the RoboZap?

1. Remove the 4 knurled screws and remove the casing. The lamps can now be installed.

2. The desired gobos can be selected by turning the gobo wheel.

3. Replace the casing and tighten the screws.

4. Set the mains voltage switches (on the opposite end of the unit from the DIP switches) to the local mains voltage (115/230V).

CAUTION: It is extremely important that BOTH switches are set to the correct voltage.

How do I connect the RoboZap units using the serial transmission link with a controller?

1. Connect the RoboZap, or the first unit in the link, to the controller, using the 10 metre XLR cable which came with the controller.

2. To interconnect the units in the link you need an XLR-XLR cable e.g. a standard balanced microphone cable. Your local Martin Professional dealer can supply this.

3. The units should be connected together in an order which gives the minimum cable length. This order has no influence on the address as far as the controller is concerned.

4. The termination plug which came with the controller is plugged into the unused XLR socket on the last unit on the link.

How do I set the operating address for each RoboZap unit when using a controller?

Set the DIP switch to the address number you want each RoboZap to use. Please refer to the Address Settings table below.

Unit no. ON pins Unit no. ON pins
1 1 17 1,5
2 2 18 2,5
3 1,2 19 1,2,5

15 1,2,3,4 31 1,2,3,4,5
16 5 32 6

What is an important caution regarding switching on the controller and RoboZap units?

THE CONTROLLER MUST NOT BE SWITCHED ON UNTIL 2 MINUTES AFTER THE UNITS HAVE BEEN SWITCHED ON.

How do I operate the RoboZap without a controller (stand-alone mode)?

When operating the RoboZap without a controller you have a choice of programs. Please refer to the Sequence Settings table below and set the DIP switches to the settings for the desired program. If you choose a music trig program, the program will start together with the music, otherwise the pre-programmed sequences start immediately.

Because the mains supply for the lamp has its own mains cable you can leave the motors, electronics and cooling fans on and manually switch the lamp on and off – also with your own lighting controller if you have one.

This appendix shows the different address and sequence settings for the DIP switch on the RoboZap. The above settings refer to the pin(s) on the DIP switch which are set to the ON position.
