Follow these steps to insert batteries into the remote control unit:

1. Remove the rear lid in the direction of the arrow and remove it.

2. Insert two R03/AAA batteries correctly into the battery compartment as indicated.

3. Put the rear cover back on.

To prevent damage or leakage of battery fluid, please follow these precautions:

• Do not use a new battery together with an old one.

• Do not use two different types of batteries.

• Remove the batteries from the remote control unit if it will not be in use for long periods.

• If the battery fluid should leak, carefully wipe the fluid off the inside of the battery compartment and insert new batteries.

Point the remote control unit at the remote sensor on the MARANTZ NR1509 when operating it. The approximate operating range is 23 ft (7 m) and within a 30-degree angle to the left or right of the sensor.

The front panel of the MARANTZ NR1509 has the following controls and functions:

• Power operation button (X): Turns the power on/off (standby).

• Power indicator: Lit when the power is on. Red indicates normal standby, while Orange indicates standby with “HDMI PassThrough”, “HDMI Control”, or “Network Control” enabled.

• INPUT SELECTOR knob: Selects the input source.

• M-DAX indicator: Lights when the M-DAX mode is selected.

• Remote control sensor: Receives signals from the remote control unit.

• Display: Shows various information.

• PURE DIRECT indicator: Lights when the “Pure Direct” sound mode is selected.

• VOLUME knob: Adjusts the volume level.

• Headphones jack (PHONES): Used to connect headphones. Audio will not be output from speakers when headphones are connected.

• SETUP MIC jack: Used to connect the supplied Sound calibration microphone for Audyssey® setup.

• M-DAX button: Switches the M-DAX mode.

• Tuner preset channel buttons (TUNER PRESET CH +, –): Select preset broadcast stations.

• INTERNET RADIO button: Switches the input source to “HEOS Music” – “TuneIn Internet Radio”.

• DIMMER button: Switches the brightness of the display.

• STATUS button: Switches the status information shown on the display.

• SOUND MODE button: Switches the sound mode.

• PURE DIRECT button: Switches the sound mode between Direct, Pure Direct, and Auto surround.

• USB port: Used to connect USB storage devices.

• AUX-HDMI connector: Used to connect HDMI output compatible devices like video camcorders and game consoles.

The display on the MARANTZ NR1509 shows the following indicators:

• Input mode indicators: Light according to the audio input mode settings (AUTO, HDMI, DIGITAL, ANALOG).

• Decoder indicators: Light when Dolby or DTS signals are input or the respective decoder is running.

• Audyssey® indicator: Lights when “MultEQ®”, “Dynamic EQ” or “Dynamic Volume” has been set up.

• Tuner reception mode indicators: “TUNED” lights up when a broadcast is properly tuned in. “STEREO” lights up when receiving an FM stereo broadcast.

• Sleep timer indicator: Lights when the sleep mode is selected.

• Volume indicator: Displays the current volume level.

• MUTE indicator: Blinks while the sound is muted.

• Information display: Shows the input source name, sound mode, setting values, and other information.

• Input signal indicators: The respective indicator lights corresponding to the input signal.

The rear panel of the MARANTZ NR1509 has the following connections:

• Bluetooth/wireless LAN antenna connectors: For connecting the external antennas for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

• FLASHER IN jack: Used with a control BOX for external control.

• Digital audio connectors (OPTICAL/COAXIAL): For connecting devices with digital audio outputs.

• NETWORK connector: For connecting a LAN cable for a wired network connection.

• REMOTE CONTROL jacks (IN/OUT): Used to connect infrared receivers/transmitters for operating the unit from a different room.

• HDMI connectors (IN/OUT): For connecting devices equipped with HDMI.

• SIGNAL GND terminal: For connecting a ground wire from a turntable.

• FM/AM antenna terminals: For connecting the supplied FM and AM loop antennas.

• Analog audio connectors (AUDIO): For connecting devices equipped with analog audio outputs.

• PRE OUT connectors: For connecting a subwoofer with a built-in amplifier.

• Video connectors (VIDEO): For connecting devices with composite video outputs.

• Speaker terminals (SPEAKERS): For connecting speakers.

• AC inlet (AC IN): For connecting the power cord.

For a typical installation, position your speakers as follows:

• FL/FR (Front speaker left/right): Place the FRONT left and right speakers an equal distance from the main listening position. The distance between each speaker and your TV should also be the same.

• C (Center speaker): Place the CENTER speaker in between the front speakers and above or below your TV.

• SL/SR (Surround speaker left/right): Place the SURROUND left and right speakers an equal distance to the left and right sides of the main listening position.

• SW 1/2 (Subwoofer): Place the SUBWOOFER at a convenient location near the front speakers. If you have two subwoofers, place them asymmetrically across the front of your room.

For surround speakers, a height of 2 – 3 ft (60 – 90 cm) above the listening position is recommended, but the height does not need to be exact. The recommended angle for front speakers is 22° – 30° from the center, and for surround speakers, 120°.

Before connecting your speakers, please observe the following notes:

• Disconnect the MARANTZ NR1509’s power plug from the power outlet. Also, turn off the subwoofer.

• Ensure that the speaker cable core wires do not protrude from the speaker terminal. The protection circuit may be activated if the core wires touch the rear panel or if the + and – sides touch each other.

• Never touch the speaker terminals while the power cord is connected to avoid electric shock.

• Use speakers with an impedance of 4 – 16 Ω/ohms.

If you are using a speaker with an impedance of 4 – 6 Ω/ohms, carry out the following setting. The default is “8ohms”.

1. Press and hold the main unit’s TUNER PRESET CH + and STATUS at the same time for at least 3 seconds. “V.Format:< NTSC>” appears on the display.

2. Press DIMMER on the main unit three times. “Sp.Imp.:<8ohms>” appears on the display.

3. Press TUNER PRESET CH + or TUNER PRESET CH – on the main unit to select the impedance (8ohms, 6ohms, or 4ohms).

4. Press the main unit’s STATUS to complete the setting.

Follow these steps to connect speaker cables:

1. Peel off about 3/8 inch (10 mm) of sheathing from the tip of the speaker cable, then either twist the core wire tightly or terminate it.

2. Turn the speaker terminal counterclockwise to loosen it.

3. Insert the speaker cable’s core wire to the hilt into the speaker terminal.

4. Turn the speaker terminal clockwise to tighten it.

Carefully check the left (L) and right (R) channels and + (red) and – (black) polarities on the speakers and connect them correctly.

The connection method depends on the connectors on your TV.

• Connection 1: TV with HDMI and ARC (Audio Return Channel): Use a single HDMI cable to connect the HDMI OUT (MONITOR/ARC) port on the MARANTZ NR1509 to the HDMI IN (ARC) port on your TV. Set “HDMI Control” to “On” in the receiver’s menu.

• Connection 2: TV with HDMI but no ARC: Use an HDMI cable for video and an optical digital cable for audio. Connect the HDMI OUT (MONITOR/ARC) on the receiver to an HDMI IN on the TV. Connect the OPTICAL OUT on the TV to an OPTICAL IN on the receiver.

• Connection 3: TV without HDMI: Use a composite video cable for video and an optical digital cable for audio. Connect a VIDEO OUT on the receiver to the VIDEO IN on the TV. Connect the OPTICAL OUT on the TV to an OPTICAL IN on the receiver.

To enjoy music from a Bluetooth device, you must first pair it with the MARANTZ NR1509.

1. Prepare for playback by connecting the supplied external antennas for Bluetooth to the rear panel and turning on the receiver’s power.

2. Press the Bluetooth button on the remote. For the first time, the unit will enter pairing mode automatically and “Pairing…” will appear on the display.

3. Activate the Bluetooth settings on your mobile device.

4. Select “MARANTZ NR1509” when it appears in the list of devices on your mobile device’s screen. Perform this connection with the Bluetooth device close to the unit (about 3.3 ft/1 m).

5. Play music using any app on your Bluetooth device. You can also control playback with the receiver’s remote control.

Once paired, you do not need to pair again. The next time you press the Bluetooth button, the unit will automatically connect to the last connected device.

1. Connect the FM/AM antennas to the rear panel.

2. Press TUNER on the remote to switch the input source to “Tuner”.

3. Press OPTION. The option menu screen is displayed.

4. Use the up/down cursor buttons to select “FM/AM”, then press ENTER.

5. Use the left/right cursor buttons to select “FM” or “AM”, then press ENTER.

6. Press TUNE + or TUNE – to select the station you want to listen to. Scanning will stop automatically when it finds an available radio station.

A maximum of 56 radio stations can be automatically preset.

1. Press OPTION when the input source is “Tuner”.

2. Use the up/down cursor buttons to select “Auto Preset”, then press ENTER.

3. Press ENTER. The unit will automatically tune in to radio stations and preset them. When completed, “Completed” is displayed for about 5 seconds.

1. Press the INTERNET RADIO button on the remote control. Alternatively, you can press the HEOS Music button, use the up/down cursor buttons to select “TuneIn Internet Radio”, then press ENTER.

2. Use the cursor buttons to browse and select the station you want to play.

1. Press the HEOS Music button on the remote control.

2. Use the up/down cursor buttons to select “Music Servers”, then press ENTER.

3. Select the name of your networked PC or NAS (Network Attached Storage) server.

4. Browse the music on your PC/NAS and select a song or playlist to play.

5. When prompted, select a queue option like “Play Now” or “Play Now & Replace Queue”, then press ENTER to start playback.

The HEOS system allows you to synchronize audio playback between multiple HEOS devices.

1. In the HEOS App, press and hold your finger on a room that is not playing music.

2. Drag it into the room that is playing music (indicated by the red outline) and lift your finger.

3. The two rooms will be grouped together into a single device group and both will play the same music in perfect sync.

Note: When selecting external inputs of the MARANTZ NR1509 for group playback, the audio devices must be connected via analog audio inputs. HDMI, optical, and coax connections are not supported for HEOS group playback.

From an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad:

1. Connect your iOS device to the same Wi-Fi network as the MARANTZ NR1509.

2. Play a song on your device. The AirPlay icon will be displayed.

3. Tap the AirPlay icon.

4. Select the MARANTZ NR1509 from the list of speakers.

From iTunes on a Mac or PC:

1. Install iTunes 10 or later on a computer connected to the same network as the MARANTZ NR1509.

2. Turn the MARANTZ NR1509 on.

3. Start iTunes and click the AirPlay icon.

4. Select the MARANTZ NR1509 from the list. Choose a song and click play in iTunes. The music will stream to the unit.

You need a Spotify Premium account to use Spotify Connect.

1. Connect your iOS or Android device to the same Wi-Fi network as the MARANTZ NR1509.

2. Launch the Spotify App on your device.

3. Play back a Spotify track.

4. Tap the Spotify Connect icon (looks like a speaker in front of a screen) and select the MARANTZ NR1509 from the list of devices. The music will stream to your receiver.

The SMART SELECT 1 – 4 buttons on the remote control allow you to register and recall a group of settings such as input source, volume level, and sound mode in a batch.

• Calling up settings: Simply press the desired SMART SELECT button (1, 2, 3, or 4). The registered settings for that button will be applied.

• Changing settings:

1. Set the input source, volume, sound mode, and other parameters to the settings you want to register.

2. Press and hold the desired SMART SELECT button (1-4) until “Smart* Memory” appears on the display. The current settings will be memorized to that button.

The Panel lock function prevents accidental operation of the buttons on the front panel.

To disable all key button operations (except power):

1. With the unit in standby mode, press the power button (X) while you press and hold M-DAX and DIMMER.

2. Use TUNER PRESET CH + or TUNER PRESET CH – to select “FP/VOL LOCK On”.

3. Press STATUS to enter the setting.

To disable all button operations except VOLUME and power:

1. With the unit in standby mode, press the power button (X) while you press and hold M-DAX and DIMMER.

2. Use TUNER PRESET CH + or TUNER PRESET CH – to select “FP LOCK On”.

3. Press STATUS to enter the setting.

To cancel the Panel lock function:

1. With the unit in standby mode, press the power button (X) while you press and hold M-DAX and DIMMER.

2. Use TUNER PRESET CH + or TUNER PRESET CH – to select “FP LOCK *Off”.

3. Press STATUS to enter the setting. The function is canceled.

You can control the MARANTZ NR1509 from a web control screen on a browser.

1. In the receiver’s menu, go to “Network” and set “Network Control” to “Always On”.

2. In the receiver’s menu, go to “Network” -> “Information” to check the IP address of the unit.

3. On a PC or tablet connected to the same network, start up a web browser.

4. Enter the IP address of the unit into the browser’s address box (e.g., “http://192.168.100.19&#8221;).

5. When the top menu is displayed on the web browser, click on the menu item you want to operate.

If you are experiencing power issues with your MARANTZ NR1509, check the following:

• Power does not turn on: Check whether the power plug is correctly inserted into the power outlet.

• Power automatically turns off:

• The sleep timer may be set. Turn the power on again.

• “Auto Standby” may be set. This function is triggered when there is no operation for a set amount of time. To disable it, set “Auto Standby” in the menu to “Off”.

• Power turns off and the power indicator flashes red (approx. every 2 seconds): The protection circuit has been activated due to a rise in temperature. Turn the power off, wait about an hour for the unit to cool down, ensure it is in a place with good ventilation, and then turn it on again.

• Power turns off and the power indicator flashes red (approx. every 0.5 seconds): The protection circuit may have been activated due to a speaker connection issue. Unplug the power cord, check that speaker cable core wires are not touching each other or the rear panel, and reconnect securely. If the problem persists, the amplifier circuit may have failed. Unplug the power cord and contact customer service.

If the remote control is not working, try the following solutions:

• The batteries may be worn out. Replace them with new batteries.

• Make sure you are operating the remote within its range (about 23 ft/7 m) and at an angle of within 30° from the unit’s remote sensor.

• Remove any obstacles between the remote control and the unit.

• Check that the batteries are inserted in the proper direction, matching the + and – marks.

• The unit’s remote sensor may be exposed to strong light (like direct sunlight). Move the unit to a place where the sensor is not exposed to strong light.

If no sound comes out of your speakers, check the following points:

• Check all device connections and ensure cables are inserted all the way in.

• Check that speaker cables are properly connected and securely tightened. Ensure core wires are not touching the metal part of other speaker terminals.

• Check that the correct input source is selected.

• Adjust the volume. The volume may be turned down completely.

• Cancel the mute mode by pressing the MUTE button.

• Check the digital audio output setting on the connected device. On some devices, it may be set to off by default.

• If a headphone is plugged into the PHONES jack, sound will not be output from the speakers.

If no sound is produced from your subwoofer, check the following:

• Check the subwoofer connections and turn on the subwoofer’s power.

• In the menu, go to “Speakers” -> “Speaker Config.” and ensure “Subwoofer” is set to “Yes”.

• If the front speakers are set to “Large” in the menu, depending on the input signal and sound mode, no sound may be output from the subwoofer.

• If the input signal does not contain a subwoofer audio signal (LFE), no sound may be output from the subwoofer. To make the subwoofer always output sound, go to the “Speakers” -> “Bass” menu and set the “Subwoofer Mode” to “LFE+Main”.

If no picture appears on your TV, check the following:

• Check the connections for all devices and ensure cables are inserted all the way in.

• Ensure input and output connectors are not reversed.

• Check cables for damage.

• Make sure the proper input source is selected on the MARANTZ NR1509.

• Check that the resolution of the player corresponds to that of the TV.

• Check whether the TV is compatible with copyright protection (HDCP). If connected to a device not compatible with HDCP, video will not be output correctly.

• To enjoy content protected by HDCP 2.2, use a playback device and TV compatible with HDCP 2.2.

If you cannot connect to a wireless network, check these points:

• The network name (SSID), password, and encryption settings may not have been set up correctly. Configure the network settings again.

• Shorten the distance from the wireless LAN access point (router) and remove any obstructions.

• Place the unit away from microwave ovens and other network access points that could cause interference.

• This unit is not compatible with WEP (TSN) encryption. If your router is set to WEP, change it to another method like WPA2-PSK (AES).

• If using a WPS Router, ensure the WPS mode is active on the router when you attempt to connect.

If an update or upgrade fails, an error message appears. Here is what they mean:

• Connection failed. Please check your network, then try again.: The network connection is unstable or connection to the server failed. Check your network environment and try the update again.

• Update failed. Please check your network, then try again.: The download of the firmware failed. Check your network environment and try the update again.

• Upgrade failed. Please check your network, then try again.: The download of the firmware failed. Check your network environment and try the upgrade again.

• Please check your network, unplug and reconnect the power cord, and try again.: The update failed. Press and hold the power button on the main unit for more than 5 seconds, or remove and re-insert the power cord. The update will restart automatically.

• Please contact customer service in your area.: This unit may be broken. Contact customer service.

If operations are not improved by restarting the unit, you can reset all settings to the factory default values. Note that this will erase your settings.

1. Turn off the power using the power button (X).

2. Press the power button (X) while simultaneously pressing and holding TUNER PRESET CH + and M-DAX on the front panel.

3. Remove your fingers from the two buttons when “Initialized” appears on the display.

Before resetting, you can use the “Save & Load” function from the menu to save your settings to a USB memory device.

If network contents cannot be played or the unit cannot connect to the network, resetting the network settings may improve the problem.

1. Press the power button (X) to turn on power to the unit.

2. Turn the INPUT SELECTOR knob to select “HEOS Music”.

3. Press and hold the main unit’s TUNER PRESET CH + and DIMMER buttons at the same time for at least 3 seconds.

4. Remove your fingers from the two buttons when “Network Reset…” appears on the display.

5. “Completed” will be shown in the display when the reset is complete. Do not turn the power off until the reset is complete.
