The package for the LINYSYS INSTANT ETHERFAST PPS1UW includes:

LAN (Green): If the LED is continuously illuminated, the PrintServer is successfully connected to a device through the LAN port. If the LED is flickering, the PrintServer is actively sending or receiving data to the wired network.

WLAN (Amber): The WLAN LED will flicker when the PrintServer is actively sending data to or receiving data from the wireless network.

ACT (Green): The ACT LED will remain continuously lit when a printer is correctly connected to the PrintServer. The LED will flicker when print jobs are being transmitted to the printer, over both the wired and wireless networks.

Err (Red): The Error LED lights up when there is a problem printing to the indicated printer.

1. Unplug the PrintServer.

2. Press and hold the diagnostic button. While pressing the button, plug in the PrintServer.

3. If you continue pressing the button for 10 seconds, the PrintServer will be reset to factory defaults.

1. Ensure that both the PrintServer and the printer attached to the Printer port are ON.

2. Press the diagnostic button, and hold it in for 2 seconds.

3. The test page, containing the current settings, will be printed.

Note: PostScript printers are unable to print this page. If you have a PostScript printer on the Printer port, the test page will not be printed.

Finding the PrintServer’s Default Name:

On the bottom of the PrintServer, there is a white bar code sticker with an SC number printed on it (for example, SCA71107). This number is the PrintServer’s Default Name, which you’ll use in the PrintServer driver installation.

Connecting the PrintServer to Your Network:

1. Plug one end of a UTP Category 5 (or better) cable into the PrintServer’s LAN Port.

2. Connect the other end of the cable into a networked hub or switch. The distance between the PrintServer and the second device should not exceed 328 feet (100 meters).

3. The LAN LED will become active.

Connecting a Printer to the PrintServer:

1. Connect your printer to the PrintServer’s USB port with your USB cable.

2. Power on your printer.

Connecting the Power:

1. Plug the power adapter cord into the PrintServer’s Power port.

2. Plug the power adapter into the wall.

The PrintServer’s hardware installation is now complete. Note: Only use the power adapter packaged with the PrintServer.

Before installing the software, you must have:

• The PrintServer hardware installed on your network.

• TCP/IP installed on each of your computers.

• An IP address assigned to each of the computers on your network.

• An IP address assigned to the PrintServer. By default the PrintServer has DHCP enabled. If you need to assign an IP address, go to Chapter 5: Bi-Admin: PrintServer Management.

Part 1: Installing the Bi-Admin Management Utility

1. Insert the Setup Utility CD. A built-in autorun will begin the installation. Click the product you wish to install, followed by the Install tab to continue.

2. The installation routine will begin. Close any other programs you might have running, and click the Next button to continue.

3. Choose a destination folder. You can either use the default folder by clicking the Next button or choose an alternate folder by clicking the Browse button.

4. The Bi-Admin Management Utility will now be installed. When it is complete, click the OK button to continue to the next section.

Part 2: Installing the Wireless-Ready USB PrintServer’s Drivers

1. To begin driver installation, click the Start button, and select Run. Type D:\Driver\Win9xnt\setup.exe (where “D” is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) in the Open field. Click the OK button.

2. The Welcome screen appears. Read the text, and click the Next button.

3. Click Next to accept the default Destination Directory. If you choose to use another directory, click the Browse button and choose the appropriate directory, then click Next.

4. The next screen will assign a Program Folder to the Windows Taskbar. The default is “Linksys PrintServer Driver”. Click the Next button to continue.

5. Driver installation is now completed. Check the box beside “Configure Print Driver Now”, and click the Finish button to continue.

6. A screen will appear with directions. Ensure the print server and printer are powered on and cable connections are proper. Click OK.

7. The Printer Port Setup screen will display the PrintServer. Highlight its description and click the Next button.

8. This will display the Configure Printer Port screen. To connect a printer, select it from the Existing Printers field and click Connect. To install a new printer, click the Add New Printer button.

9. The Add Printer Wizard screen will appear. Follow the standard procedure for adding printers under Windows. Refer to your printer’s documentation if you have questions.

10. After your printer(s) have been added, you will return to the Configure Printer Port screen. Click the Connect button to connect the printer(s).

11. The Printer Port Setup screen will appear again. Click Close to complete the installation and configuration procedure.

Starting the Utility:

1. To start the Bi-Admin program, click on Start, Programs, Linksys, PrintServer Bi-Admin, and then Bi-Admin. Alternatively, double-click the Bi-Admin icon if one has been created.

2. When the program appears, it will ask for the Connected Protocol. Ensure the box next to TCP/IP is checked and click OK. The program will scan the network for available PrintServers.

3. When any change or operation is executed, you may be prompted for a password. Enter the password or press Enter if no password has been created.

Obtaining Device Information:

To access information about the PrintServer, click on it in the Device List window or highlight it and click the Device Information icon. You can also highlight the PrintServer and click on Status to select Backup/Restore Device Information. This displays hardware ID, firmware version, IP address, and other details.

Common Bi-Admin Functions (Icons):

• Refresh Icon: Forces Bi-Admin to refresh its list of PrintServers on the network.

• Printer Status Icon: Lets you check the name, status, and printing details of each attached printer.

• Logical Port Configuration Icon: Allows you to set or change the PrintServer’s logical port settings.

• Wireless Icon: Configure wireless settings like SSID, Channel Number, Network Type, and WEP encryption. Click Save to Device when finished.

• Firmware Upgrade Icon: Upgrade the device’s ROM chip firmware.

• Application Exit Icon: Exits the Bi-Admin program.

1. In the Bi-Admin utility, click once on the Device Name of the PrintServer whose address you want to change.

2. Click on Init Device and Set IP Address. This will bring up the Set IP Address window.

3. If the Default Name field is empty, enter the PrintServer’s SC number from the unit’s sticker.

4. Enter the new IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway Address (optional) for the PrintServer.

5. Click Set. The new settings will be written to the PrintServer unit.

Alternatively, if you have a DHCP server, you can enable DHCP and leave all the IP, Gateway, and Subnet values on zero.

1. In the Bi-Admin utility, click once on the Device Name of the PrintServer you want to affect.

2. Click on Configuration, and then System. The System Configuration window will appear.

3. Enter a new device name for the PrintServer in the Device Name field.

4. When you finish, click on Save. The new setting will be stored in the PrintServer unit.

5. To verify the change, click on the Refresh icon in the Bi-Admin menu bar.

1. In the Bi-Admin utility, click once on the Device Name of the PrintServer you want to change.

2. Click Configuration, followed by System. The System Configuration window will appear.

3. Each protocol is listed, along with Enable and Disable buttons. Enable or disable the protocols you want.

4. Click on Save to device to save the changes.

Important: Always leave at least one protocol enabled on the Wireless-Ready PrintServer. Disabling all protocols could leave you without a way to communicate with the unit. Unless you require TCP/IP to be disabled, leave it alone.

Resetting the PrintServer:

If the PrintServer seems locked up, you can reset it. Click once on the Device Name of the PrintServer you want to reset, followed by Init Device, then Reset Device.

Restoring Factory Default:

If you have made irreversible changes or want to start over, you can restore factory defaults. Click on Init Device, and then Restore Factory Default.

Important: Restoring Factory Default will erase ALL of the work that you have done on this unit since purchasing it.

1. Open your web browser.

2. Type http:// followed by the PrintServer’s IP address in the browser’s Address box. Use the Bi-Admin software to find the IP address. Press Enter.

3. A Password Screen will appear. Leave the User Name field blank. The Password field will be blank as well. If you want to create a password, enter it now. Otherwise, just click the OK button.

Server Page:

Enter the PrintServer name. Enter and verify a password if you wish to create one. Check the boxes under Protocols to enable them (AppleTalk, TCP/IP, etc.). Click the Save button, then the Reset button to apply changes.

Printer Page:

Click the Printer tab to view the status of any connected printers. You can also test printers by clicking the Print Test Page button.

TCP/IP Page:

Click the TCP/IP tab. Select DHCP Client to have an IP address assigned automatically. To assign a static address, select Fixed IP Address and enter the Device IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway IP Address. Click the Save button to implement changes.

Wireless Page:

Click the Wireless tab to configure wireless information. These values are configured through your Instant Wireless™ Network PC Card. See the Card’s documentation for configuration instructions. Clicking the Refresh button retrieves this information again.

Status Page:

Click the Status tab to view information about the PrintServer. This screen is for information only. No values can be changed. Clicking Refresh updates the information.

To access the Advanced Properties, click the Advanced tab in the Web-based Utility. Note that changing these settings can cause interruption of network communication.

AppleTalk Page:

Enter the AppleTalk Zone name. For each printer, choose the Communications Protocol (ASCII or Binary) as recommended by the printer’s manufacturer. Click Save to apply changes. (Note: Linksys does not support its products in an Apple networking environment. If you encounter trouble, consult your printer documentation.)

Internet Printing Page (for e-mail):

Enter the Mail Server IP Address, Account Name, and Account Password. Set the interval to check mail. Enter the Printer Model and select the Printer Port. Choose options like “Print every E-Mail”. Click Save to apply. (Note: Linksys does not provide any technical support for problems with e-mail printing.)

Logical Printers Page:

Select the Logical Printer Port to configure (L1 to L8). Select the physical Printer Port it will use. You can enter Pre-string and Post-string control codes (in hex). Click Save to apply. (Note: Linksys does not provide any technical support for logical printers configuration.)

NetBEUI Page:

Enter the Domain Name for the PrintServer. Set the Response Time and choose whether to Abort Print Job if Error. Click Save to apply. (Note: Linksys does not provide technical support for the NetBEUI protocol.)

SNMP Page:

Click the SNMP tab to configure SNMP settings. The appropriate MIB file (Mib1p.mib) must be imported into your SNMP management program. Configure settings for Management Stations and Trap Receivers as needed. Click Save to apply. (Note: Linksys does not provide technical support for SNMP management.)

Requirements:

• The PrintServer must have a valid IP Address (external for Internet printing).

• Your router/firewall must NOT block the IPP protocol (Port 631/TCP).

• Clients must know the correct URL or IP Address of the IPP Server.

• Unless clients use Windows 2000, they must be provided with the supplied IPP Client software.

Note: Linksys does not provide technical support for Internet printing.

IPP Client Setup for Windows 95, 98, Millennium, NT 4.0, 2000, XP:

1. Run the Add IPP Port program entry created by the installation.

2. Enter the IP Address or URL of the IPP Server.

3. Click Select Device Port, and select the appropriate port (e.g., USB 1).

4. Click Save to create the IPP port.

5. Select an existing printer to use the new port and click OK, or click Add New Printer to create a new one.

IPP Client Setup for Windows 2000 and XP (using built-in client):

1. Start the Add Printer Wizard.

2. Select Network Printer and click Next.

3. Select “Connect to a printer on the Internet or on your intranet” and enter the URL in the format: ip_address:631/ipp/P1 (Note: These entries are case sensitive. “ipp” must be in lowercase, and “P1” must be in UPPERcase).

4. If a dialog box notifies you that the printer driver is not installed, click OK.

5. Select the printer manufacturer and model to match the printer connected to the port on the IPP Server.

6. Click Next and complete the Wizard.

By default, DHCP is enabled on the LINYSYS INSTANT ETHERFAST PPS1UW. If you need to re-enable it:

1. Run the Bi-Admin program. It will scan the network and display a list of PrintServers.

2. Highlight the PrintServer to be configured and enter its password if one has been assigned. Click OK.

3. Click on Configuration in the menu and choose TCP/IP from the drop-down field.

4. The TCP/IP Configuration window will appear. Select Enable to enable DHCP.

5. Click Save to Device.

If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which is found by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna

• Increase the separation between the equipment or devices

• Connect the equipment to an outlet other than the receiver’s

• Consult a dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for assistance

All the LEDs on the front of the PrintServer are off.

• Check the power supply and the power connection.

The PrintServer’s Status LED stays lit continuously.

• Reset the Wireless-Ready PrintServer by unplugging the power supply and plugging it back in or pressing the Reset button on the back of the PrintServer.

I am using DHCP, and the PrintServer gets an IP Address conflict.

• If the PrintServer is left on when the DHCP server is turned off, the PrintServer will retain its IP Address without informing the DHCP server. Reset the PrintServer so it will obtain a new IP Address. This problem also arises if you assigned a static IP Address within the range used by the DHCP server. If so, use another address NOT within the range used by the DHCP server.

The PrintServer’s LAN LED is not lighting up.

• Check your cabling and make sure that the Link LED on your hub or switch is lit up.

A printer connected to the PrintServer cannot print or prints garbage.

• Check the following:

1. Cable connection between the PrintServer and printer.

2. The printer driver in the application program or Windows matches the printer.

3. Cabling distance is too long if it exceeds 10 feet.

The Configuration button on the Printer Status screen in Bi-Admin is grayed out, even though my printer is bi-directional.

• The button is unavailable until the printer has finished its print jobs and sits idle.

Bi-directional printing refers to a printer’s ability to communicate back to a PC to notify it of print job status, paper jams, etc. The LINYSYS INSTANT ETHERFAST PPS1UW is designed to function with both regular and bi-directional printers. However, like other print servers, it cannot pass messages from the printer back to the printing PC across the network.

You can still check any printer’s online and printing status on the network using the Bi-Admin management utility software. If your printer came with special bi-directional software for status monitoring, it is likely not network-capable and should not be used with the PrintServer. For best results, turn off the printer’s bi-directional function in its on-board menus or by removing its specific software.

The PrintServer supports the NetBEUI and Appletalk protocols, Internet Mail Printing, Unix support, Internet Printing, and much more. However, Linksys is neither responsible nor liable for supporting these optional features, and will not provide phone or online support for these features.

In the Not_supp directory on the PrintServer’s Setup Utility CD, you’ll find software, drivers and informative how-to guides covering the installation of the unsupported functions. The User Guides provided in the Not_supp directory (PDF or DOC) have all of the information you need to set up and use these functions.
