According to the model, the following items are included in the packaging box for your INGENICO DESK-3500:

• The terminal equipped with its paper roll

• The power supply with its cable connection (according to the national needs).

• The cable connection for the telephone or Ethernet network

• This installation guide

To power on or power down the INGENICO DESK-3500 terminal, connect or disconnect the power supply from the electric outlet.

The electrical outlet for the INGENICO DESK-3500 must meet the following criteria:

• Must be installed near the equipment and easily accessible;

• Must meet standards and regulations in the country of use;

• For type A plug, the protection of the installation must be set to 20 A.

• Except for Norway do not connect on an IT electrical network.

If you have an urgent call to make when the terminal hangs on the line, place the handset in the hang-up position and perform one of the following actions to get a dial tone:

• Press the red key (=cancel)

• Disconnect the power supply from the mains

• Disconnect the terminal telephone connector from the telephone line socket, and place the telephone connector into the telephone line socket.

You should get a dial tone within 6 seconds.

Your INGENICO DESK-3500 device fulfills current applicable PCI PTS security requirements. Upon receipt and regularly thereafter, you should check for signs of tampering of the equipment. For example:

• Check that the keypad is firmly in place.

• Check that there is no evidence of unusual wires that have been connected to any ports on your terminal or associated equipment, the chip card reader, or any other part of your terminal.

Such checks provide a warning of any unauthorized modifications. Your terminal detects any “tampered state”. In this state, the terminal will repeatedly flash the message “Alert Irruption!” and further use of the terminal will not be possible. If you observe this message, you should contact the terminal helpdesk immediately.

Positioning of the terminal on a check stand must be in such a way to make cardholder PIN (Personal Identification Number) spying infeasible. If the device is used in a situation where the cardholder cannot pick it up to shield their PIN entry, it must be installed in the following manner:

a) The device must be angled at 45 or more, so that oversight of the PIN entry from the rear of the device is not possible.

b) The device must either be fitted in a swivel stand so that the customer can position it at the best angle to prevent oversight, or it must be fixed in the best possible position to prevent oversight if such a generic position exists in the specific environment.

c) The device environment must be accompanied by conspicuous notices and educational material which informs the customer to shield their PIN during PIN entry.

d) The device must be deployed so that oversight from other customers in different payment lanes or other areas is prevented. This can be achieved through the placement of lanes and the device, so the customer is automatically positioned between the device keypad and other customers, or by the environment itself shielding the PIN entry process.

e) The terminal is exclusively made for indoor use. If the above conditions are not fulfilled, the device with a PIN shield must be used.

Please use the correct power supply for your INGENICO DESK-3500 terminal based on the label on the terminal:

Cable length

Install the INGENICO DESK-3500 on a flat surface with easy access to an electrical outlet and telephone line. Place it away from heat sources and protect it from dust, vibrations, and electromagnetic radiation. The terminal is exclusively for indoor use.

Opening down-side trapdoor

Unclip the trapdoor by pushing on the clip with your finger. Then lift the trapdoor rearward to remove it.

Closing down-side trapdoor

To close the trapdoor, start by landing the trapdoor on to the bottom casing. Manage a 5/6mm distance for clip insertion then push and clip it.

Ensure the terminal is powered off before connecting cables. Perform the following operations:

1. Open the down-side trapdoor then unclip the cables hook.

2. Plug the telephone line, equipped if necessary with a country-specific converter, to the telephone network.

3. Connect the other end to the terminal telephone connection. If necessary, connect the telephone (a telephone is not required for the terminal to operate).

4. Optionally plug in other cables (Ethernet, RS232, USB…).

5. Plug the PSU power lead into the power socket.

6. Clip the cables-hook part to secure the cables path, then close the down-side trapdoor.

7. Plug the power supply into the mains.

To install the optional Magic Box, follow the operations described in the “connecting cables” chapter and connect the specific cables as follows:

• Cables to plug:

1. Power lead

2. Telephone line

3. Ethernet cable

4. Serial link RS232 cable

• If you need extra cables, cut the undesired over-molded section of the cable assembly.

• Install the cables through the lead-through guides as indicated on the figure.

It is strongly recommended to secure the “Magic cable” to the terminal’s work area to reduce stress on the terminal and connection. This can be done by:

1. Using the supplied cable tie to attach to a table leg (or similar).

2. Using the supplied cable tie and self-adhesive support.

3. Using a counter-sunk screw (not supplied) to an appropriate surface.

Before starting, switch off the terminal by disconnecting the power supply. Do not use any tools.

1. Open the down-side trapdoor.

2. Insert the SAM Card into the slot marked (1) or (2). Ensure the SAM Card is inserted in the correct manner. The cut corner must be positioned as indicated on the figure.

3. Close the down-side trapdoor.

It is suggested to use a piece of adhesive, previously pasted on both sides of the SAM, for easy removal.

Before starting, switch off the terminal by disconnecting the power supply.

1. Open the down-side trapdoor.

2. Insert the MicroSD Card completely into the slot marked (MicroSD). The MicroSD Card must be positioned with its back side as indicated on the marking.

3. To remove the MicroSD Card, push on it with a touch panel pencil.

4. Close the down-side trapdoor.

Before starting, switch off the terminal by disconnecting the power supply.

1. Open the down-side trapdoor.

2. Insert the SIM GPRS into the slot marked (SIM1). Ensure the SIM is inserted correctly. The cut corner must be positioned as indicated on the figure.

3. Close the down-side trapdoor.

1. Open the down-side trapdoor.

2. Insert the SAM Card into the slot marked (3). Ensure the SIM is inserted correctly. The cut corner must be positioned as indicated on the figure.

3. Close the down-side trapdoor.

Before starting, switch off the terminal by disconnecting the power supply.

1. Open the down-side trapdoor.

2. Insert the SIM GPRS into the slot marked (SIM2). Ensure the SIM GPRS is inserted correctly. The insertion position SIM corner (engraved on the terminal) must be located as shown on the figure. Do not force the insertion. Once positioned, it is normal for the SIM GPRS to not be fully inserted.

3. Close the down-side trapdoor.

When the paper roll is nearing its end, a red line will appear, indicating it needs to be replaced. Use only paper approved by the manufacturer (diameter 40 mm).

1. Open the paper compartment by lifting the catch at the rear of the terminal and dragging the cover to the rear. Do not force the cover against the cables.

2. If you are inserting a new paper roll, remove the first complete turn as this surface could be damaged during shipment.

3. Insert the paper roll into the compartment following the directions shown in the manual’s figure.

4. Pull the paper up to the top of the terminal and hold it in this position.

5. Maintain the paper and close the lid.

6. Press the top of the lid in the center as shown by the arrow until it clips into position.

The keypad functions are as follows:

1. NAVIGATION keys (F1, F2, F3, F4): Used for navigation within menus.

2. Ingenico key: Function depends on the application.

3. CANCEL key (red): Cancels the current operation.

4. CLEAR key (yellow) / Feed paper (long press): Clears the last character. A long press feeds the paper.

5. VALIDATION key (green): Confirms the current operation.

6. Dot key: Used for decimal input.

If you have a black and white display and wish to change the contrast of the characters, press the dot key and the up arrow key simultaneously to decrease the contrast, or the dot key and the down arrow key to increase it. Keep pressing the keys as long as necessary.

Note: There is no contrast management for the Color display.

Insert the card manually into the magnetic stripe reader with the magstripe facing the main body of the terminal. Swipe the card with a constant speed, not too slowly and not too fast, to maximize reading efficiency and avoid annoying repetitions.

Chip cards should be inserted into your INGENICO DESK-3500 terminal as illustrated, with the chip facing up and into the card reader.

1. Bring the contactless card firmly up to the active zone (at about 1cm) above the contactless logo located on the paper trapdoor button.

2. Keep the card close to the contactless logo during the transaction.

The terminal has four contactless status lights:

• When a contactless transaction starts, the first (left hand) status light will be lit steadily. This indicates the contactless feature is in use but a card is not being read.

• When a contactless card is presented to the active zone, the second, third, and fourth status lights will be lit in turn. The card read is successful when all four status lights are lit and a confirmation tone can be heard.

The thermal paper can be deteriorated by poor storage conditions. We recommend you avoid:

• storage in hot, wet places (near an air-conditioner, humidity higher than 85%)

• exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet for long periods

• contact with organic solvents (solvent type adhesive)

• direct contact with materials containing plasticizers (PVC transparent folders or envelopes)

• direct contact with “diazo” papers

• direct contact with water

• rubbing or pressing the paper too strongly

First, unplug all wires from the terminal. Good rules for proper cleaning are:

• Use a soft cloth that is very slightly soaked with soapy water to clean the outside of the terminal.

• Do not clean the electrical connections.

Do not use solvents, detergents, or abrasive products in any case, as these materials might damage the plastic or electrical contacts.

• Use the original packaging for any unit or stored.

• Disconnect all cables from the terminal during the transport.

• Avoid exposing the terminal to the direct rays of the sun.

• Do not put anything into the slot of the smart card reader.

If the terminal does not turn on, check the following:

• Check the power supply and telephone line cables.

• Check for an electrical power network.

If the terminal fails to establish a telephone connection, perform these checks:

• Check that the tone of the phone line is free.

• Check the configuration of the phone line and number to call.

• Get support from technical assistance.

If cards are not being read, try the following:

• Check that the magnetic card is passed correctly (with the magstripe facing the main body of the terminal).

• Swipe the card again with a constant speed, not too slow and not too fast.

• Verify that the magnetic strip is not damaged, grooved, or cracked.

• Make sure you have inserted the smart card correctly into the smart card reader and removed the card only after the transaction is complete.

If the ticket is not printing, check the following:

• Check the presence and proper positioning of the paper roll. You may need to adjust it following the instructions in this manual.

• Check the type of paper used (thermal paper must be used).

• Verify the thermal paper’s sensitive side.

The markings on your INGENICO DESK-3500 and its components indicate the following:

• ~ (Alternating current symbol): This marking indicates that the product operates with an alternating current (AC) source (mains). It is completed by afferent values (voltage, frequency, and max current).

• — (Direct current symbol): This marking indicates that your terminal is suitable for direct current (DC) only. It is completed by afferent values (voltage and max current).

• VI in a circle: This marking indicates the power supply meets the energy efficiency level VI requirements.

• Square within a square: Marking for a Class II product. Such a product does not require a safety connection to electrical earth.

• House symbol: For indoor use only.

• Circle with + and –: This indicates the output plug is Positive (+) and the barrel (ring) of the output plug is Negative (-).

• LPS: This marking indicates the power supply meets limited power source safety requirements.

• Telephone handset symbol: This marking is on the connector for the telephone line connection.

• Lightning bolt symbol: This marking is on the connector for the power supply output cable connection.
