Tray 1 holds up to 50 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb) paper. To avoid jams, never add or remove paper from Tray 1 during printing.

Step 1. Open Tray 1 by grasping the sides of the tray and pulling down.

Step 2. Slide out the tray extension.

Step 3. Press down on the tab on the right paper guide, and then spread the paper guides to the correct size.

Step 4. Load the paper into the tray. Make sure that the paper fits under the tabs and below the maximum height indicators.

Step 5. At your computer or mobile device, begin the printing process from the application. Make sure that the driver is set to the correct paper type and size for the paper being printed from the tray.

For paper that requires a specific orientation, load it into Tray 1 according to the following table:

Tray 2 holds up to 250 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb) paper.

Step 1. Open Tray 2.

Step 2. Adjust the paper-width guides by squeezing the adjustment latches on the guides and then sliding the guides to the size of the paper being used.

Step 3. To load legal-size paper, extend the tray front by squeezing the front latch and pulling the front of the tray. When loaded with legal-size paper, Tray 2 extends from the front of the printer approximately 51 mm (2 in).

Step 4. Load the paper into the tray.

Step 5. Make sure that the paper stack is flat at all four corners. Slide the paper length and width guides so that they are against the stack of paper. To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray full indicator.

Step 6. After making sure that the paper stack is below the tray full indicator, close the tray. If legal-size paper has been loaded, the tray will not fully close.

Step 7. At your computer or mobile device, begin the printing process from the application. Make sure that the driver is set to the correct paper type and size for the paper being printed from the tray.

For paper that requires a specific orientation, load it into Tray 2 according to the following table:

The optional Tray 3 holds up to 550 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb) paper. Do not print envelopes, labels, or unsupported sizes of paper from Tray 3. Print these types of paper only from Tray 1 or Tray 2.

Step 1. Open Tray 3.

Step 2. Adjust the paper-width guides by squeezing the adjustment latches on the guides and then sliding the guides to the size of the paper being used.

Step 3. To load legal-size paper, extend the tray front by squeezing the front latch and pulling the front of the tray. When loaded with legal-size paper, Tray 3 extends from the front of the printer approximately 51 mm (2 in).

Step 4. Load paper into the tray.

Step 5. Make sure that the paper stack is flat at all four corners. Slide the paper length and width guides so that they are against the stack of paper. To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray full indicator.

Step 6. After making sure that the paper stack is below the tray full indicator, close the tray. If legal-size paper has been loaded, the tray will not fully close.

Step 7. At your computer or mobile device, begin the printing process from the application. Make sure that the driver is set to the correct paper type and size for the paper being printed from the tray.

For paper that requires a specific orientation, load it into Tray 3 according to the following table:

To print envelopes using either Tray 1 or Tray 2, follow these steps to select the correct settings in the print driver. Tray 1 holds up to 10 envelopes. Envelopes cannot be printed from the optional Tray 3.

Step 1. From the software program, select the Print option.

Step 2. Select the printer from the list of printers, and then click or tap the Properties or Preferences button to open the print driver.

Step 3. Click or tap the Document tab.

Step 4. In the Paper size drop-down list, select the correct size for the envelopes.

Step 5. In the Paper type drop-down list, select Envelope.

Step 6. In the Paper source drop-down list, select Manual feed.

Step 7. Click the OK button to close the Document Properties dialog box.

Step 8. In the Print dialog box, click the OK button to print the job.

When using envelopes, load them according to the information in the following table:

Follow these steps to replace the toner cartridges. Do not remove the new toner cartridge from its package until it is time to replace it. To prevent damage, do not expose the toner cartridge to light for more than a few minutes.

Step 1. Open the front door by pressing the button on the left panel.

Step 2. Grasp the blue handle on the toner cartridge drawer, and then pull out the drawer.

Step 3. Grasp the handle on the old toner cartridge, and then pull it straight up to remove it.

Step 4. Remove the new toner cartridge package from the box, and then pull the release tab on the packaging.

Step 5. Remove the new toner cartridge from the opened packaging shell. Place the used toner cartridge in the shell for recycling.

Step 6. Hold both ends of the new toner cartridge and rock it end to end to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

Step 7. Do not touch the imaging drum on the bottom of the toner cartridge. Fingerprints can cause print-quality problems.

Step 8. Insert the new toner cartridge into the drawer. Make sure that the color chip on the cartridge matches the color chip on the drawer.

Step 9. Close the toner cartridge drawer.

Step 10. Close the front door.

Step 11. Pack the used toner cartridge into the box the new cartridge came in for recycling.

The Cartridge Policy feature protects the printer from counterfeit toner cartridges by allowing only genuine HP cartridges to be used. This feature can be enabled or disabled using the control panel or the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). An administrator password may be required.

Using the printer control panel to enable:

1. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon.

2. Open the following menus: Settings, then Supplies.

3. Touch the button next to Authorized HP Cartridge Policy to turn on (enable) the feature.

Using the printer control panel to disable:

1. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon.

2. Open the following menus: Settings, then Supplies.

3. Touch the button next to Authorized HP Cartridge Policy to disable the feature.

Using the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) to enable:

1. Open the EWS.

2. From the left navigation pane, select Supplies.

3. On the Supplies page, select the Supply Settings tab.

4. Under Authorized HP Cartridge Policy, click the button to enable the setting. The button turns blue.

Using the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) to disable:

4. Under Authorized HP Cartridge Policy, click the button to disable the setting. The button turns black.

The Cartridge Protection feature permanently associates toner cartridges with a specific printer or fleet of printers, so they cannot be used in other printers. After enabling cartridge protection, all subsequent toner cartridges installed in the printer are automatically and permanently protected. To avoid protecting a new cartridge, disable the feature before installing it. Turning the feature off does not turn off protection for cartridges that are currently installed.

Using the printer control panel to enable:

1. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon.

2. Open the following menus: Settings, then Supplies.

3. Touch the button next to Cartridge Protection to turn on (enable) the feature.

Using the printer control panel to disable:

1. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon.

Follow this procedure for the basic printing process for Windows:

Step 1. From the software program, select the Print option.

Step 2. Select the HP COLOR LASERJET PRO MFP 4302 from the list of printers. To change settings, click the Properties or Preferences button to open the print driver.

Step 3. Click the tabs in the print driver to configure the available options. For example, set the paper orientation, paper source, media type, and paper size on the Document tab.

Step 4. Click the OK button to return to the Print dialog box. Select the number of copies to print from this screen.

Step 6. Retrieve the printed stack from the output bin, and place it in Tray 1.

Step 7. If prompted, select the appropriate control panel button to continue.

Step 1. From the software program, select the Print option.

Step 2. Select the HP COLOR LASERJET PRO MFP 4302 from the list of printers, and then click the Properties or Preferences button.

Step 3. Click the Basic tab.

Step 4. Select the number of pages per sheet from the Pages per sheet drop-down.

Step 5. Select the Print page borders and Page order settings on the Basic tab, then set the Orientation setting on the Document tab, if needed. Click OK to close the Document Properties dialog.

Step 6. In the Print dialog, click Print to print the job.

Follow this procedure for the basic printing process for macOS:

Step 1. Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.

Step 3. Click Show Details or Copies & Pages, and then select other menus to adjust the print settings.

Step 4. Click the Print button.

This feature is available if you install the HP print driver. It might not be available if you are using AirPrint.

Step 1. Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.

Step 2. Select the printer.

Step 3. Click Show Details or Copies & Pages, and then click the Layout menu.

Step 4. Select a binding option from the Two-Sided drop-down list.

Step 5. Click the Print button.

Your HP COLOR LASERJET PRO MFP 4302 supports walk-up USB printing for the following file types: .pdf, .jpg, .prn, .PRN, .pcl, .PCL, .ps, .PS, .doc, .docx, .ppt, and .pptx.

Step 1. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on the top of the printer.

Step 2. Touch Print on the control panel.

Step 3. Select Print from USB.

Step 4. Touch the name of the file that you want to print. If the file is stored in a folder, select the name of the folder, and then select the name of the file.

Step 5. Touch the icon next to the Print button to see the print options.

Step 6. Select any of the following menu items to change the settings for the print job: Color Mode, Sides, Quality, or Collate.

Step 7. After selecting the settings for the print job, select Print to print the job.

Step 8. Retrieve the printed job from the output bin, and then remove the USB flash drive from the USB port.

Step 1. Load the original print-side down on the scanner glass or print-side up in the automatic document feeder.

Step 2. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Copy icon to start the copy job immediately, or touch the Settings icon to the left of the copy button to adjust the copy settings.

Step 3. To adjust the number of copies, touch the box to the left of the Copy button and then enter the number of copies using the touch keypad. Touch Done to close the keypad.

Step 4. Touch Copy to begin copying.

You can copy a two-sided document automatically using the document feeder or manually using the scanner glass.

Copy on both sides automatically (using document feeder):

1. Load the original documents into the document feeder with the first page facing up, and with the top of the page leading.

2. Adjust the paper guides to fit the size of the document.

3. From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon to the left of the Copy button.

4. Touch Sides, and then touch the option you want to use for your copy job. You can choose from 2 to 1-sided, 2 to 2-sided, or 1 to 2-sided options.

5. Touch the Copy button to start copying.

Copy on both sides manually (using scanner glass):

1. Place the document face-down on the scanner glass with the upper-left corner of the page in the upper-left corner of the glass, and then close the scanner lid.

2. From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon to the left of the Copy button.

3. Touch Sides, and then select the 1 to 2-sided option.

4. Touch the Copy button to start copying.

5. The printer prompts you to load the next original document. Place the next page on the glass, or turn the two-sided document over to copy the second side.

6. Touch the OK button.

7. Repeat this process until you have scanned the last page. Touch Copy to finish printing the copies.

This feature copies both sides of an ID card or other small document onto the same side of one sheet of paper.

Step 1. Place the ID card onto the scanner glass, near the icon at the back left corner, and slightly away from the edges of the scanner glass.

Step 2. Close the scanner lid.

Step 3. From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon to the left of the Copy button.

Step 4. Touch the green Quick Sets menu at the top of the screen.

Step 5. Touch the ID Card icon.

Step 6. Select the number of sides and tray settings, and then touch Copy.

Step 7. Follow the prompts on the control panel screen to copy the first side of the ID card and then turn the card over to copy the other side.

Step 1. Place the document on the scanner glass or into the document feeder.

Step 2. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on top of the printer.

Step 3. From the home screen, touch the Scan icon, and then touch Scan to USB.

Step 4. Select the location on the USB drive where you want to save the scanned file.

Step 5. Touch the File Name field and type in the file name using the onscreen keypad.

Step 6. Touch the File Format drop-down list to select a file type.

Step 7. To preview the scan, touch the Preview icon. For additional options, touch the drop-down list at the top of the Scan to USB window.

Step 8. Touch Send to scan the document and save it to the USB drive.

The Scan to Email feature must be configured before use.

Step 1. Load the document on the scanner glass or into the document feeder.

Step 2. From the Home screen, touch the Scan icon, and then touch E-mail.

Step 3. If prompted, enter your login information in the Sign In screen.

Step 4. Enter the email recipient(s) by touching the To field to type an address, or by touching the Address Book icon to select a contact.

Step 5. Touch the Subject field to add a subject line.

Step 6. Touch the File Name field to specify a file name for the scanned file.

Step 7. Touch the File Type drop-down list to select a file type.

Step 8. To preview the scan, touch the Preview icon. For additional options, touch the drop-down list at the top of the Scan to Email window.

Step 9. Touch Send to scan the document and send the email.

The Scan to Network Folder feature must be configured before use.

Step 1. Load the document on the scanner glass or into the document feeder.

Step 2. From the home screen, touch the Scan icon, and then touch Network Folder.

Step 3. Touch the Destination Folder Path field to directly type in a network folder location, or touch the Address Book icon to select a network path from the address book.

Step 4. Touch the File Name field and type in the file name using the onscreen keypad.

Step 5. Set other file options such as Original Sides and File Type by touching each drop-down list.

Step 6. To preview the scan, touch the Preview icon to the left of the Send button.

Step 7. Touch Send to scan the document and save it to the selected network location.

Step 1. Load the document. If using the scanner glass, place it face-down on the left rear corner. If using the document feeder, load the pages face-up.

Step 2. At the printer control panel, touch the Fax icon.

Step 3. To enter the fax number, do one of the following:

Touch the Enter the Fax Number field, and then use the keypad to enter the fax number. To send to multiple fax numbers, touch the Pause button after entering each fax number. When finished, touch the Done button.

Touch the Address Book icon to open the Address Book. Touch each contact that you want to send the fax to, and then touch Add when done.

Step 4. Touch Send to send the fax.

Your HP COLOR LASERJET PRO MFP 4302 must be connected to an IP-based network to access the EWS. Access to the EWS menus requires a personal identification number (PIN). The default PIN for this printer is located on a sticker inside the front door.

Step 1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Menu icon, and then touch Info.

Step 2. Touch Connectivity to display the IP address or host name of the printer.

Step 3. Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network. In the address line, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displays on the printer control panel. Press the Enter key on the computer keyboard. The EWS opens.

There are two methods to update the firmware on your HP COLOR LASERJET PRO MFP 4302.

Method one: Update using the control panel (for network-connected printers only)

1. Make sure the printer is connected to a wired or wireless network with an active Internet connection.

2. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon, and then touch Tools.

3. Scroll to and touch Maintenance.

4. Scroll to and touch Firmware.

5. Touch Check to check for updates. If a newer version is detected, the update process starts automatically.

6. To set up automatic updates:

a. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon, and then touch Settings.

b. Scroll to and touch Printer Update.

c. Touch the Notify button next to Allow Upgrades, and then touch Next.

d. Select either Auto Update (printer automatically installs new firmware) or Notify (printer notifies you when an update is available).

Method two: Update using the HP Printer Update utility (for USB- or network-connected printers)

This method requires a print driver to be installed.

1. Go to the HP support website for your printer model.

2. In the Firmware section, locate the Firmware Update file.

3. Click Download, and then click Run.

4. When the HP Printer Update utility launches, select the printer that you wish to update, and then click Update.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation, and then click the OK button to close the utility.

Restoring the factory-set defaults returns all of the printer and network settings to the factory defaults. It will not reset the page count or tray size. Restoring the factory-set defaults returns all of the settings to the factory defaults, and it also deletes any pages that are stored in the memory.

Step 1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Menu icon, and then touch Settings.

Step 2. Scroll to and open the following menus: Maintenance, then Restore Settings.

Step 3. Touch Restore All Factory Defaults.

A “Restoring Printer Settings” message displays on the screen, and then the printer automatically restarts.

Cartridge is low: The printer indicates when a toner cartridge level is low. Actual toner cartridge life remaining may vary. Consider having a replacement available to install when print quality is no longer acceptable. The toner cartridge does not need to be replaced now.

Cartridge is very low: The printer indicates when the toner cartridge level is very low. Actual toner cartridge life remaining may vary. To extend the life of the toner, you can remove the toner cartridge from the printer and gently rock it back and forth to redistribute the toner. The toner cartridge does not need to be replaced now unless the print quality is no longer acceptable.

Step 1. Open the document feeder cover.

Step 2. Remove any jammed paper.

Step 3. Close the document feeder cover.

Step 4. Lift the document feeder input tray to provide better access to the document feeder output bin, and then remove any jammed paper from the output area.

Step 5. Open the scanner lid. If paper is jammed behind the white plastic backing, gently pull it out.

Step 6. Lower the scanner lid.

If the error persists, ensure the paper meets the document feeder specifications, the input tray is not overloaded, the paper guides are set correctly, and the feed rollers are clean.

Step 1. Pull the tray completely out of the printer.

Step 2. Remove any jammed or damaged sheets of paper.

Step 3. Reinsert and close Tray 2. When reinserting the paper, make sure the paper guides are adjusted properly for the paper size.

Step 4. Open the rear door and look for and clear any paper present or obstructions in the paper path.

If the error persists, ensure the paper type and quality meet specifications, the tray guides are set correctly, and the tray is not overfilled.

The fuser can be hot while the printer is in use. Wait for the fuser to cool before handling it.

Step 1. Check the output area of the printer. If paper is visible, grasp the leading edge and remove it.

Step 2. At the rear of the printer, open the rear door.

Step 3. Remove any jammed or damaged sheets of paper from the rear door area. The fuser is located above the rear door; do not attempt to reach into this area until the fuser is cool.

Step 4. Close the rear door.

If the error persists, ensure the paper type and quality meet HP specifications.

If you are having image quality problems, try these solutions in order:

1. Clean the scanner glass:

a. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.

b. Open the scanner lid.

c. Clean the scanner glass and the white plastic backing underneath the lid with a soft cloth or sponge moistened with nonabrasive glass cleaner. Do not use abrasives or place liquids directly on the glass.

d. Dry the glass and white plastic parts with a chamois or cellulose sponge.

e. Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.

2. Check the paper type setting on the control panel:

a. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon, then touch Paper, then Paper Source.

b. Touch the tray name (Tray 1 or Tray 2) and touch Modify to ensure the paper size and type settings match the paper loaded in the tray.

3. Check the image adjustment settings:

a. At the printer control panel, touch Copy.

b. Adjust settings like Quality, Lighter/Darker, and Sharpness.

4. Optimize for text or pictures:

a. At the printer control panel, touch Copy.

b. Touch the icon to the left of the Copy button, then touch Content Type.

c. Choose a predefined option (Mixed, Photograph, or Text).

Setting the resolution and color to a high value can create large files. Before setting the resolution and color, determine how you are going to use the scanned image. The default resolution is 200 ppi.

Poor physical connection:

1. Verify that the printer is attached to the correct network port using a cable of the correct length.

2. Verify that cable connections are secure.

3. Look at the network port connection on the back of the printer and verify that the amber activity light is flashing and the green link-status light is continuously lit.

The computer is using the incorrect IP address for the printer:

1. Open the printer properties on your computer and click the Ports tab. Verify that the current IP address for the printer is selected.

2. If you installed the printer using a Microsoft standard TCP/IP port, use the hostname instead of the IP address.

The computer is unable to communicate with the printer:

1. Test network communication by pinging the printer’s IP address from a command-line prompt on your computer. If the ping displays round-trip times, the network is working.

2. If the ping command failed, verify that network hubs are on and that network settings for the printer and computer are configured for the same network.

The printer is disabled, or other network settings are incorrect:

1. Review the printer’s configuration/networking pages to check the status of the network settings and protocols.

2. Reconfigure the network settings if necessary.

Wireless Connectivity Checklist:

Verify that the network cable is not connected.

Verify that the printer and the wireless router are turned on and have power.

Verify that the service set identifier (SSID) is correct. Print a configuration page to determine the SSID.

For secured networks, verify that the security information is correct.

Verify that the printer is within the range of the wireless network (typically 30 m or 100 ft).

Verify that obstacles do not block the wireless signal.

Verify that the printer is located away from electronic devices that might interfere with the wireless signal.

The printer does not print after the wireless configuration completes:

1. Make sure that the printer is turned on and in the ready state.

2. Turn off any third-party firewalls on your computer.

3. Make sure that the wireless network and your computer are working correctly.

The wireless connection does not work after moving the wireless router or printer:

1. Make sure that the router or printer connects to the same network that your computer connects to.

2. Print a configuration page and compare the SSID to the SSID in the printer configuration for the computer. If they are not the same, reconfigure the wireless setup.

The network does not appear in the wireless networks list:

Make sure the wireless router is turned on and has power.

The network might be hidden. You can still connect to a hidden network.

Perform a wireless network diagnostic test:

From the printer control panel, you can run a diagnostic test. From the Home screen, touch the Menu icon, then Settings, then Network Reports, then Print Wi-Fi Test Report.

Faxes are sending slowly:

Try resending the fax when the line conditions have improved.

Check with the phone service provider to verify that the line supports fax.

Turn off the Error Correction Mode setting. From the Home screen, go to Menu > Settings > Fax Settings > Fax Send, and turn off Error Correction Mode. Note that this can reduce image quality.

Use white paper for the original.

Fax quality is poor (blurry or too light):

Increase the fax resolution. From the control panel, touch Fax, then the icon to the left of the Send button, and then scroll to and touch Resolution. Select a higher resolution.

Turn on the Error Correction Mode setting.

Check the toner cartridges and replace if necessary.

Ask the sender to darken the contrast setting on their sending fax machine.

Fax cuts off or prints on two pages:

Set the Default Paper Size setting. From the Home screen, go to Menu > Paper > Paper Source. Touch the tray name (Tray 1 or Tray 2) to view and modify the paper size and type settings to match the paper used for faxes.
