Before mowing with your HONDA HRX537VYE, it is important to check your lawn and your mower for safety.

Check Your Lawn:

Inspect the area for objects that can be thrown by the cutting blades, such as stones, sticks, bones, and wire. Remove them.

Clear the area of people and pets.

Check the length and condition of the grass to determine the appropriate cutting height and speed. Avoid mowing wet grass.

Check Your Mower:

Cutting Means Inspection:

1. Move the throttle lever to the STOP position.

2. Move the fuel valve to the OFF position.

3. Disconnect the spark plug cap from the spark plug.

4. Tilt the mower to the right so the fuel cap is up. This prevents fuel leakage and oil from seeping into the air filter.

5. Inspect the cutting blades for damage, cracks, and excessive wear, rust, or corrosion. A dull blade can be sharpened, but a worn, bent, or cracked blade must be replaced. Also, check that the cutting blade bolts are tight.

Engine Oil Level Check:

1. With the engine stopped and the mower on a level surface, remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe it clean.

2. Insert the dipstick into the filler neck without screwing it down. Remove it and check the oil level.

3. If the oil level is near the low-level mark, add SAE 10W-30 oil to bring the level up to the high limit mark. Do not overfill.

4. Securely install and tighten the filler cap/dipstick.

Air Cleaner Inspection:

Remove the air cleaner cover and ensure the filter is clean and in good condition. If dirty, refer to the maintenance section for cleaning instructions.

Grass Catcher Inspection:

Check the grass catcher material for tears, holes, or excessive wear. Ensure a new catcher meets original specifications if replacement is needed.

Handlebar Setup:

1. Turn the handlebar adjust knobs 90 degrees to the unlock position.

2. Move the handlebar into the mowing position, aligning the locating pins with the desired holes (upper, middle, or lower) on the handlebar mounting brackets.

3. Turn the adjust knobs 90 degrees back to the lock position. The pins will snap into the holes to lock the handlebar in place.

Grass Catcher Assembly:

1. Slide the grass catcher frame into the grass catcher fabric and install the plastic clips as shown in the manual.

2. Lift the discharge guard and install the assembled grass catcher onto the mower.

Engine Oil:

The HONDA HRX537VYE is shipped WITHOUT OIL. Add enough SAE 10W-30 API service category SJ or later oil to bring the oil level between the upper and lower limit marks on the dipstick. The refill amount is approximately 0.35 – 0.40 L. Do not overfill.

Fuel:

Refer to the fueling instructions before starting.

1. Turn the fuel valve to the ON position.

2. Move the throttle lever to the FAST (rabbit icon) position.

3. Make sure the cutting means control lever and Select Drive control are released. Pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance, then pull briskly. Return the starter grip gently.

4. Put the throttle lever in the FAST position to mow or the SLOW (turtle icon) position to idle. For best results and easy restarting, allow the engine to run for at least three minutes before stopping.

1. Release the cutting means control lever to stop the blades from rotating.

2. Move the throttle lever to the STOP position to stop the engine.

3. When the mower is not in use, turn the fuel valve to the OFF position.

Fuel Valve: Opens and closes the connection between the fuel tank and the carburetor. Set to ON to operate and OFF for transport or storage.

Throttle Lever: For best cut quality, always mow with the throttle in the FAST position. The SLOW position is for idling.

Cutting Means Control System (Roto-Stop®):

1. To start blade rotation, ensure the engine is running and the throttle is in the FAST position.

2. Push down and hold the Roto-Stop® button.

3. Pull the cutting-means control lever quickly against the handlebar and then release the Roto-Stop button.

4. Keep the lever held against the handlebar to maintain blade rotation. Release the lever to stop the blades.

Select Drive Control: With the engine running and blades rotating, slowly push the Select Drive control forward to propel the mower. You can vary the speed by how far you push the lever. Release the control to stop the rear wheels.

Select Drive Control Knob: Adjusts the maximum ground speed from MIN to MAX when the Select Drive lever is fully engaged.

Cutting Height Adjustment Levers: There is one lever at each wheel with seven height settings, from 19 mm to 101 mm. Pull the lever toward the wheel and move it into the desired notch. Ensure all four levers are set to the same height.

Clip Director® Knob: This knob controls grass catching, mulching, and rear discharge by adjusting a sliding door. It has ten positions, from fully open (BAG) to fully closed (MULCH).

The Clip Director® knob adjusts a sliding door to control how grass clippings are processed. It has ten positions ranging from BAG (for 100% bagging) to MULCH (for 100% mulching).

Full Catching (Bagging) or Rear Discharge:

Position the Clip Director knob all the way to the left in the BAG position. This fully opens the sliding door.

For bagging, install the grass catcher.

For rear discharge, remove the grass catcher. The rear discharge guard will cover the opening.

Full Mulching:

Position the Clip Director knob all the way to the right in the MULCH position. This fully closes the sliding door, recycling all clippings back onto the lawn.

Partial Mulching and Bagging:

You can set the knob to any of the intermediate positions between BAG and MULCH. The closer the knob is to the MULCH position, the more grass will be mulched and the less will be bagged. This allows you to customize the mowing result based on lawn conditions.

Important Safety Note: Always turn the engine OFF and disconnect the spark plug cap before lifting the discharge guard to view or clean around the sliding door.

Safe Mowing Practices:

Keep all four wheels on the ground and maintain a firm grip on the handlebar.

Walk, never run, with the mower.

Mow across slopes, not up and down. Avoid steep slopes (more than 20°).

When mowing around obstacles like trees, release the Select Drive control and push the mower for better directional control.

If the cutting blade hits an object or the mower starts to vibrate, stop the engine immediately and check for damage.

Mowing Tips:

When to Mow: Mow when grass has grown 12 – 25 mm above its recommended height. For mulching, more frequent mowing (e.g., twice a week) may be needed.

Cutting Height: Don’t cut off more than one-third of the total grass height in a single mowing. If grass is very tall, make an initial cut at the highest setting, then mow again in 2-3 days at a lower setting.

Cutting Width: For an even finish, overlap each mowing swath by a few centimeters.

Blade Speed: Always use the FAST throttle setting for a clean cut.

Blade Sharpness: A sharp blade cuts cleanly. A dull blade tears the grass. Have your blades sharpened or replaced when they no longer cut cleanly.

Wet Grass: Avoid mowing wet grass. It’s slippery, clogs the mower deck, and collects in clumps on the lawn.

Fallen Leaves: Your HONDA HRX537VYE can be used to pick up fallen leaves. For large amounts, set the front of the mower deck one or two settings higher than the rear and position the Clip Director knob toward the mulching side to help shred the leaves before they enter the bag.

Perform maintenance at every indicated month/year or operating hour interval, whichever comes first.

Notes:

1. Service more frequently when used in dusty areas.

2. These items should be serviced by an authorized Honda servicing dealer, unless you have the proper tools and are mechanically proficient.

3. In Europe and other countries where machinery directive 2006/42/EC is enforced, this cleaning should be done by your servicing dealer.

Drain the oil while the engine is warm for a quick and complete drain.

1. Put the throttle lever in the STOP position and turn the fuel valve OFF.

2. Wipe the oil filler area clean, then remove the oil filler cap/dipstick.

3. Place a suitable container next to the mower to catch the used oil. Tilt the mower on its right side to drain the used oil through the filler neck. Allow the oil to drain completely.

4. Dispose of the used motor oil properly.

5. Fill with the recommended oil (SAE 10W-30). Refill amount is 0.35 ~ 0.40 L. Do not overfill.

6. Check the oil level with the mower on a level surface. Insert the dipstick without screwing it in. The oil level should be at the high limit mark. If it is low, add oil but do not overfill.

7. Screw in the filler cap/dipstick securely.

1. Press down on the air cleaner cover tabs and remove the cover.

2. Remove the filter from the air cleaner housing.

3. Inspect the filter and replace it if it is damaged.

4. To clean the filter, tap it several times on a hard surface to remove dirt. You can also blow compressed air (not exceeding 207 kPa) through the filter from the inside. Never try to brush off dirt, as this will force it into the fibers.

5. Wipe dirt from the inside of the air cleaner housing and cover with a moist rag, being careful not to let dirt enter the carburetor duct.

6. Reinstall the filter and cover.

The required spark plug is NGK – BPR5ES.

1. Disconnect the spark plug cap and remove any dirt from around the spark plug area.

2. Remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench.

3. Inspect the spark plug. Replace it if the electrodes are worn or if the insulator is cracked or chipped. If reusing, clean it with a wire brush.

4. Measure the electrode gap. It should be 0.7 ~ 0.8 mm. Correct the gap by carefully bending the side electrode if necessary.

5. Install the spark plug carefully by hand to avoid cross-threading.

6. After the plug seats, tighten it with a spark plug wrench to compress the washer. For a new plug, tighten 1/2 turn. For a used plug, tighten 1/8 to 1/4 turn. The specified torque is 20 N·m.

7. Install the spark plug cap.

You will need a torque wrench for installation. Always wear heavy gloves to protect your hands.

Blade Removal:

1. Put the throttle lever in the STOP position and disconnect the spark plug cap.

2. Tilt the mower to the right so the fuel cap is up.

3. Use a 14 mm socket wrench and a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning. Remove the two cutting blade bolts and special washers.

4. Remove the upper and lower cutting blades.

Blade Installation:

1. Clean any dirt and grass from the blade mounting area.

2. Install the new upper and lower blades using the two blade bolts and special washers. Ensure the special washers are installed with the concave side toward the blades and the convex side toward the bolt head.

3. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning. Tighten the cutting blade bolts with a torque wrench to 49 – 59 N·m.

If you do not have a torque wrench, have an authorized dealer tighten the bolts before using the mower.

Before Loading:

If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes.

Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position to prevent carburetor flooding and reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

Handlebar Folding:

1. Remove the grass catcher.

2. Turn the handlebar adjust knobs 90° into the unlock position.

3. Fold the handlebar over the mower. Be careful not to kink or pinch the control cables.

Loading and Unloading:

Position the mower with all four wheels on the bed of the transport vehicle. Tie the mower down with rope or straps and block the wheels. Keep tie-downs away from controls, cables, and the carburetor. When using a loading ramp, do not use the drive system. The ramp angle should be less than 15°. If a ramp is not available, two people should lift the mower.

Cleaning:

Wash the lawnmower, including the underside of the mower deck. Wash the engine by hand, preventing water from entering the air cleaner. If the engine was hot, let it cool for at least a half hour before washing.

Wash the grass catcher and allow it to dry completely.

Wipe all accessible surfaces dry. Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature to evaporate any remaining water.

Fuel Storage Preparation:

Short Term (30-90 days):

1. Add fuel stabilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions to a full tank of fresh petrol.

2. Run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to circulate the treated fuel.

3. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position.

4. Continue to run the engine until it stops from lack of fuel in the carburetor bowl (less than 3 minutes).

Long Term (greater than 90 days):

Run the engine until it empties all petrol from the entire fuel system, including the fuel tank.

Engine Oil: Change the engine oil.

Engine Cylinder: Remove the spark plug and pour 5 – 10 cm³ of clean engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the starter rope several times to distribute the oil, then reinstall the spark plug. Pull the starter rope slowly until resistance is felt to close the valves.

Placing in Storage:

Store the mower in a well-ventilated area away from any flame or spark source. Store it level on its wheels. The handlebar can be folded for compact storage. Cover the mower with a porous cover to keep out dust.
