Many new and factory radios have an anti-theft feature that requires a reset code when disconnected from battery power. Before unplugging power, you must determine if your radio or source unit requires a reset code. You can find this information by checking the operation manual for your vehicle or contacting the dealer. Also, be prepared to disarm your vehicle’s alarm when you reconnect the battery.

It is critical to use the proper power and ground cable for your amplifier. You should always use high-quality copper cable. The recommended sizes for the HIFONICS BRX616.4 and other models are listed below. Be sure to use the proper fuse size for your model; some models require an external fuse.

Step 1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Place the terminal in a secure position so that it won’t accidentally contact the negative battery post.

Step 2. Run the power, speaker, and RCA cables. Properly route these cables through the vehicle.

Step 3. Mount the amplifier. Choose a mounting location that will provide adequate air ventilation. Mount the amplifier to a secure surface. Do not mount the amplifier upside down.

The chassis ground connection is critical to the performance of the amplifier. Follow these steps:

Step 1. Choose a location on the vehicle’s chassis that is close to the amplifier.

Step 2. Completely scrape away the paint from this location to expose bare metal.

Step 3. Use a nut and bolt if possible to secure the ground cable.

Step 4. Do NOT use an existing factory bolt for the ground connection.

Step 5. Attach the other end of the chassis ground cable to the amplifier’s negative (GND) terminal. It is important to make sure this connection is very tight.

Step 1. **Remote Turn-on Connection:** Attach the remote turn-on wire to the amplifier’s remote (REM) terminal. The other end of this wire connects to the remote output of the source unit (head unit/radio).

Step 2. **Positive Power Connection:** Attach the main power cable to the amplifier’s positive (+12V) terminal. This cable must run directly to the positive terminal of the vehicle’s battery and be properly fused. Ensure this connection is very tight.

Connect the RCA cables from your source unit to the INPUT connectors on the amplifier. The HIFONICS BRX616.4 also features an OUTPUT which can be used to provide an input signal for a second amplifier.

Before beginning the level setting procedure, turn the INPUT LEVEL control completely counter-clockwise to its minimum setting (labeled 9V).

Connect the speaker cables to the speaker output connectors on the amplifier. The HIFONICS BRX616.4 is a 4-channel amplifier and can be configured in the following ways:

Stereo:

Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) wires from your left speaker to the LEFT (+) and LEFT (-) terminals for a given channel pair (e.g., CH1/2). Do the same for the right speaker on the RIGHT (+) and RIGHT (-) terminals. Repeat for the other channel pair (CH3/4) if you are using four speakers.

Bridged:

To power a single speaker (like a subwoofer) with two channels, connect the speaker’s positive (+) wire to the LEFT (+) terminal and the speaker’s negative (-) wire to the RIGHT (-) terminal of a channel pair. The terminals used for bridging are typically marked on the amplifier. You can do this for both channel pairs (CH1/2 and CH3/4) to power two separate speakers in bridged mode.

Connect the main power cable to the positive battery terminal. This power cable must be fused within 18 inches of the battery terminal. After this is connected, you can re-connect the negative battery terminal, making sure it is securely tightened. Be prepared to disarm your vehicle’s alarm and enter your radio’s source unit code if required.

Input Mode Switch:

This switch will “sum” or combine the right and left channel signals in the MONO position to improve bass performance. Select MONO only when the amp is being used for subwoofers. Otherwise, use the STEREO setting.

Xover Mode Switch:

The XOVER (crossover) mode switch sets the type of filter that will be active. The HIFONICS BRX616.4 has two of these switches, one for each set of channels (CH1/2 and CH3/4).

FULL: Allows all frequencies to pass through. Use for full-range speakers.

HP (High Pass): Only allows frequencies above the set point to pass through. Use for midrange or high-frequency speakers.

LP (Low Pass): Only allows frequencies below the set point to pass through. Use for subwoofers.

High Pass Adjustment (HPF):

The HPF control will limit the output below the selected frequency. This is typically used to protect midrange and high-frequency speakers from damage and to allow a smooth transition from a subwoofer. The adjustment range is from 60Hz to 1.3KHz.

Low Pass Adjustment (LPF):

The LPF control will limit output above the selected frequency. This is used to allow a smooth transition to higher frequency speakers, typically when using a subwoofer. The adjustment range is from 35Hz to 250Hz.

The Bass EQ control will increase the power output at 45Hz for more pronounced bass. You must exercise caution when using this control. Increase the level in small amounts until distortion is noticed, then back off a little to eliminate the distortion.

Setting the level is a critical step to ensure your HIFONICS BRX616.4 is properly adjusted to match the signal output level of your source unit. This is NOT a volume control.

Step 1. If possible, with the source unit off, confirm that the primary volume control is turned down (counter-clockwise).

Step 2. Turn on the source unit (CD or MP3 player). Re-confirm that the volume is turned down. Make sure the source unit controls; balance, fader, bass, and treble are all set to center or “0” adjustment. Make sure that the green LED on the end of the amplifier is illuminated.

Step 3. Play a clean musical selection of which you are very familiar. A CD is preferred. Do not use radio signals for level setting. Hit play and start turning the volume of the source unit up.

Step 4. Stop increasing the source unit volume when you reach 3/4 (about 75%) or until you hear speakers begin to slightly start producing distortion.

Step 5. Increase the amplifier level (clockwise) until distortion is heard, then back the level down (counter-clockwise) until the distortion is eliminated. Small adjustments may need to be made to balance the levels of multiple amplifiers.
