Before you begin installation, it is important to be aware of the following:

Many new and factory radios require a reset code when disconnected from battery power. This is an anti-theft feature. Before unplugging power, you must determine if your radio/source unit requires a reset code. Check the operation manual for your vehicle or contact the dealer.

Also, be prepared to disarm your vehicle’s alarm and to enter your radio / source unit code when you reconnect the battery power.

It is critical to use the proper power and ground cable for your HIFONICS BRX1616.4. Always use high quality copper cable. The required sizes are listed in the table below. Be sure to use the proper fuse size for your model; some models require an external fuse.

1. Disconnect negative battery terminal: Place the terminal in a secure position so that it won’t accidentally contact the negative battery post.

2. Run Cables: Properly route power, speaker, and RCA cables through the vehicle.

3. Mount Amplifier: Choose a mounting location that will provide adequate air ventilation. Mount the amplifier to a secure surface. Do not mount the amplifier upside down.

4. Chassis Ground: The chassis ground connection is critical to the performance of the amplifier. Choose a location that is close to the amplifier. Completely scrape away the paint to expose bare metal and use a nut and bolt if possible. DO NOT USE AN EXISTING FACTORY BOLT!

5. Negative Power Connection: Attach the chassis ground cable to the amplifier negative terminal. It is important to make sure this connection is very tight.

6. Remote Turn-on Connection: Attach the remote turn on wire to the amplifier remote output of the source unit.

7. Positive Power Connection: Attach the main power cable to the amplifier +12V terminal. The cable must run directly to the battery and be properly fused and be very tight.

8. Signal Input Connection: Connect the RCA cables to the INPUT connectors. The OUTPUT can be used to provide input for a second amplifier.

9. Level Control: Before initial power-up, turn the LEVEL control completely counter-clockwise to its minimum setting.

10. Speaker Connections: Connect the speaker cables to the speaker output connectors. Follow the diagram that best fits your speaker configuration.

11. Positive Battery Connection: Connect the power cable to the positive battery terminal. The power cable must be fused within 18 inches of the battery terminal.

12. Re-connect Negative Battery Terminal: Re-connect the negative battery terminal, making sure it is securely tightened.

Connect the speaker cables to the speaker output terminals based on your desired configuration.

Stereo:

For a standard stereo setup, connect the left speaker’s positive (+) and negative (-) wires to the LEFT + and – terminals respectively. Connect the right speaker’s positive (+) and negative (-) wires to the RIGHT + and – terminals respectively. The HIFONICS BRX1616.4 is a 4-channel amplifier, so you will have connections for front and rear sets of speakers (LEFT/RIGHT for CH1/2 and LEFT/RIGHT for CH3/4).

Bridged:

To bridge a pair of channels (e.g., CH1/2) to power a single speaker or subwoofer, connect the speaker’s positive (+) wire to the LEFT + terminal and the speaker’s negative (-) wire to the RIGHT – terminal. The terminals used for bridging are typically marked on the amplifier. This combines the power of both channels.

The input MODE switch will “sum” or combine the right and left channel signals in the MONO position to improve bass performance. Select MONO only when the amp is being used for subwoofers. For all other applications, use the STEREO position.

The XOVER Mode switch sets the type of crossover that will be active. The options are:

FULL: Full range signal passes through, no filtering is applied.

HP (High Pass): Only frequencies above the HPF setting are passed through to the speakers.

LP (Low Pass): Only frequencies below the LPF setting are passed through to the speakers.

The HIFONICS BRX1616.4 is a 4-channel model and has two of these switches, one for each set of channels (CH1/2 and CH3/4).

High pass Adjustment (HPF): The HPF control will limit the output below the selected frequency (60Hz to 1.3KHz). This is typically used to protect midrange and high frequency speakers from damage and to allow a smooth transition from a subwoofer.

Low pass Adjustment (LPF): The LPF control will limit output above the selected frequency (35Hz to 250Hz). This is used to allow a smooth transition to the higher frequency speakers, primarily when using the amplifier for subwoofers.

The Bass EQ control will increase the power output at 45Hz for more pronounced bass. Exercise caution when using this control. Increase the level in small amounts until distortion is noticed, then back off a little.

This is a critical step to ensure your amplifier is properly adjusted to match the signal output level of your source unit. THIS IS NOT A VOLUME CONTROL!

1. If possible, with the source unit off, confirm that the primary volume control is turned down (counter clockwise).

2. Turn on the source unit (CD, or MP3 player). Re-confirm that the volume is turned down. Make sure the source unit controls; balance, fader, bass and treble are all set to center or “0” adjustment. Make sure that the green LED on the end of the amplifier is illuminated.

3. Play a clean musical selection of which you are very familiar. CD is preferred. Do not use radio signals for level setting. Hit play and start turning the volume of the source unit up.

4. Stop increasing the source unit volume when you reach 3/4 (about 75%) or until you hear speakers begin to slightly start producing distortion.

5. Increase the amplifier level (clockwise) until distortion is heard, then back the level down (counter clockwise) until the distortion is eliminated. Small adjustments may need to be made to balance the levels of multiple amplifiers.

2ch – Full Range (using two channels of the amplifier):

Connect two full-range speakers in stereo. Set the MODE switch to STEREO and the XOVER switch for that channel pair to FULL.

4ch – Full Range:

Connect four full-range speakers in stereo (front and rear pairs). Set both XOVER switches (for CH1/2 and CH3/4) to FULL.

4ch – Mixed Mono (Front Speakers and Subwoofer):

Connect front speakers to CH1/2 and a bridged subwoofer to CH3/4. For CH1/2, set the XOVER to HP (High Pass) and adjust the HPF knob to filter out low bass from the front speakers. For CH3/4, set the XOVER to LP (Low Pass) and adjust the LPF knob to send only low bass to the subwoofer. You can also set the input mode to MONO for the subwoofer channels if desired.
