What are the important safety warnings for my HAIER BD-143H chest freezer?

Please observe the following safety warnings when using your HAIER BD-143H chest freezer:

Ventilation: Keep ventilation openings, in the appliance enclosure or in the built-in structure, clear of obstruction.

Defrosting: Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

Refrigerant Circuit: Do not damage the refrigerant circuit. The refrigerant is easily inflammable and the circuit is hermetically sealed. Improper intervention can cause an acute fire hazard. Avoid any mechanical influence on the cooling system, especially on accessible parts like the condenser, compressor, capillary tube, or drying filter.

Electrical Appliances: Do not use electrical appliances inside the food storage compartment of the appliance, unless they are of the type recommended by the manufacturer.

Refrigerant Handling: Interventions on the cooling system must be carried out by professional and authorized personnel only. Escaping refrigerant can injure your eyes. In the event of eye contact with the refrigerant, wash your eyes instantly under plenty of running water and consult an eye specialist immediately.

Power Cable: If the power cable is damaged, an approved cable provided by a manufacturer or a service agent must be used for replacement.

Old Appliances: If you are replacing an old appliance, it is essential to destroy any existing latch or bolt locks before you put it aside to prevent playing children from locking themselves in.

How should I install my HAIER BD-143H chest freezer?

For proper installation of your HAIER BD-143H, please follow these guidelines:

1. Choose a Position: Place the appliance in a cool, well-aired, dry room. Strictly avoid high ambient temperatures and direct sunlight.

2. Avoid Heat Sources: Installation near a heat source like a heater or oven is highly inappropriate as it increases power consumption. If installation near a heat source is unavoidable, use a suitable insulation plate (do not use asbestos) and observe these minimum distances:

– From a gas or electric cooker: 3 cm

– From a radiator or oven: 5 cm

– From a wall, piece of furniture, or another appliance: 2 cm

3. Ventilation: If your freezer has a ventilation grille (F), do not obstruct it. These models can be placed directly against a wall, but not with the side protected by the grille. For freezers without a ventilation grille, leave sufficient space between the rear of the appliance and the wall for warm air to escape.

4. Leveling: The appliance must be placed horizontally on a level base to ensure an unimpeded refrigerant circuit and optimum function.

5. Stabilization Time: IMPORTANT! Leave the appliance to stand in its final position for at least 2 hours before switching it on. This allows the refrigerant circuit to stabilize and prevents operating problems.

6. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, thoroughly clean the interior with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar. Do not use washing liquids, sharp or granular cleaning implements, or any cleaning products containing soda. Ensure the inner area is absolutely dry before connecting.

What is the correct start-up procedure for the HAIER BD-143H?

1. Fully unpack the appliance.

2. Remove the polystyrene parts in the compressor chamber (if supplied).

3. Remove documents and any accessories from the inside of the appliance.

4. Clean the interior with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar, and dry thoroughly with a cloth.

5. Close the appliance.

6. Insert the plug in the socket.

7. Switch on the appliance by turning the temperature control to the right. For the time being, turn the controller fully to the right to the Max position (the green and red lights will go on).

8. If equipped with a SUPER FREEZE SWITCH, turn it on (the yellow light will go on too).

9. Do not open the appliance for about 4 hours, or as long as the red light is on, to allow the interior temperature to drop to the necessary level.

10. You can now fill the appliance with any amount of deep frozen food (purchased ready frozen goods).

11. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH again after 24 hours at the latest.

12. If you wish to freeze fresh, unfrozen food, proceed as per the instructions for “Freezing/storage of fresh food”.

Important: Do not store any bottles containing liquids, as liquid expands when frozen and the bottle can explode. Never keep containers with explosive substances (e.g., gas lighters, petrol, ether) in the freezer.

How do I adjust the temperature and understand the controls on my HAIER BD-143H?

The temperature control (Thermostat) switches the appliance on and off and sets the cooling temperature. The control is intentionally resistant to turning to prevent accidental changes; use a coin or screwdriver to adjust it.

The settings range between:

Min / minimum number: Slight cooling

Max / maximum number: Lowest temperature

The compressor will stop when the control is on position “0” or “OFF” (not all models have this function). Temperature settings should be based on ambient temperature, quantity of stored food, and frequency of opening. A medium setting is recommended.

Your control panel may have two or three indicator lights:

1st Version with Two Lights (FIG. 4a):

A: Temperature control (Thermostat)

B: SUPER FREEZE (yellow light)

C: CONTROL (green light)

2nd Version with Three Lights (FIG. 4b):

A: Temperature control (Thermostat)

B: SUPER FREEZE (yellow light)

C: ALARM (red light)

D: CONTROL (green light)

The following always applies:

Green Light (CONTROL): The appliance is connected to power and is operating. This light must always be on.

Red Light (ALARM): Indicates the interior temperature is too high.

Yellow Light (SUPER FREEZE): The SUPER FREEZE function is on and the thermostat is disabled, causing the compressor to cool continuously.

Why is the red ALARM light on my HAIER BD-143H illuminated?

The red indicator light (ALARM) signals that the interior temperature of the freezer is too high. There are several normal reasons for this:

– First start-up of the appliance.

– Restarting the appliance after defrosting.

– Filling the freezer with a large quantity of fresh food.

In these cases, it is normal for the red light to go on. It will turn off automatically once the interior temperature reaches approximately -15°C. You can switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if equipped) to speed up the cooling process; switch it off again no more than 24 hours later or when the red light has gone off.

Reopen the appliance, if possible, only after the red light has gone off.

If the red control light remains on for more than 12 to 24 hours, there may be a serious problem and you should consult the troubleshooting guide.

If your appliance is equipped with a warning buzzer, it will sound when the red light goes on. The buzzer is automatically silenced when you turn on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH.

How do I freeze and store fresh food in my HAIER BD-143H?

Almost all fresh products are suitable for freezing. Pack them in portions suitable for your household to avoid defrosting quantities that are too large for consumption in one day.

Labeling:

Label the portions clearly with at least the following information:

– Product name (e.g., beef fillet)

– Weight of portion

– Quantity (total of pieces)

– Freezing date

– Use by date

Freezing Procedure:

a) Place fresh foods in the pre-freezing compartment at the side (I) (if equipped) or on the bottom of the freezer, which is the coldest part. Avoid putting fresh food in direct contact with already frozen food.

b) Fill with fresh food quantities suitable for your appliance’s freezing capacity (see rating plate for XX kg/24h) within a 24-hour period.

c) If available, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (FIG.4).

d) After 24 hours, move the newly deep-frozen goods to a hanging basket (K) to make space for freezing additional fresh food.

e) Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (yellow light goes off).

f) Set the temperature control according to the filling capacity.

g) Keep the storage temperature at -18°C or colder. You can monitor this by placing a thermometer with a scale range up to -26°C inside.

Refilling:

Make sure you refill fresh food at the earliest 24 hours after the previous filling, and do not exceed the maximum stacking height.

How should I stack food inside the HAIER BD-143H and what are the recommended temperature settings?

To ensure correct storage of frozen food, never fill the storage shelf (E) up to the edge. Always allow space between the lid and the frozen foods.

Set the temperature control strictly according to the filling capacity. To save energy when operating in a normal ambient temperature of +18°C to +22°C, the following settings are recommended:

Capacity pos. Stacking mark Setting
Full upper 12,00 h
Half full medium 10.00 h
1/4 or less lower 08.00 h

How do I defrost my HAIER BD-143H chest freezer?

Under normal conditions (3 to 4 openings per day), the freezer should be defrosted once or twice a year. Layers of ice and frost act as insulation and must be removed.

Danger Warning: Never use electrical appliances like hair dryers or fan heaters, or devices with a naked flame (e.g., candles) to defrost. The plastic interior can melt, and escaping gas can be ignited.

Defrosting Procedure:

1. Provide a suitable non-metallic container (e.g., plastic container or wash-basket).

2. Make absolutely sure that you remove the plug from the power socket.

3. Dry your hands thoroughly to prevent skin damage from contact with ice (use gloves if possible).

4. Remove all frozen food, roll it firmly in newspaper, place it in the container, and move the container to a cool, dry room.

5. Cover the container all around with a thick blanket.

6. Lift the divider (H) (if equipped) upwards out of the guide-rail.

7. Use the divider as a defrosting dish and place it under the freezer where the defrosting water drain-plug is located.

8. Pull the plug (if provided) out of the freezer bottom.

9. Scrape the thickest ice carefully from the inside using a plastic or wood scraper without sharp edges. Put the ice in a kitchen sink to melt.

10. To speed up defrosting, you can place a large pot of warm (not too hot) water on the freezer bottom.

11. For freezers without a drain plug, continuously wipe up the water with a sponge.

12. Thoroughly clean the inside. Rinse it with a mixture of warm water and vinegar, then rinse with clear water.

13. Wipe the freezer with an absorbent cloth until thoroughly dry and allow it to air for 3 to 4 minutes.

14. Replace the drain-plug (if provided).

15. Empty the defrosting water dish (if provided) and slide it back into the guide rails as a divider.

16. Close the chest lid and plug it back into the socket.

17. Set the temperature control to the maximum setting (green and red lamps will go on) and switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) (yellow lamp will also light up).

18. Now refill the frozen food, placing the oldest items at the top. This entire process (steps 1-17) should be completed within a maximum of two hours to prevent food from defrosting.

19. When the red lamp goes off, reset the temperature control to a setting suitable for the filling capacity.

20. Switch off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) after about 8 to 12 hours, or at the latest after 24 hours (the yellow light will go off).

How do I clean and maintain my HAIER BD-143H?

External Appearance: Occasionally clean the exterior with furniture polish or another enamel-protecting product. Never use these products on the inside.

Lid Seal: Clean the seal (B) with warm water now and again. Do not use any cleaning products on it.

Condenser: If your appliance has a condenser (R) on the rear wall, remove dust and dirt from time to time. Dust impedes heat release and increases energy consumption. Use a light brush or duster for best results.

Long Periods of Disuse: If you leave the appliance out of use for an extended period (e.g., on holidays), leave the lid open to prevent odors from building up. For models with a lock, when the chest lid is open, set the lock to the “closed” position and keep the key away from small children to prevent accidents.

What should I do if my HAIER BD-143H is not cooling sufficiently or the compressor is operating too often?

If you suspect a fault, check the following possible causes and remedies before calling for service:

Appliance Stood for Less Than 2 Hours: Did you let the appliance stand for at least 2 hours before switching it on to allow the refrigerant circuit to stabilize? If not, unplug it, lift the chest for a moment, and put it back down. After 2 hours, plug it in again and do not open it for a further 12 hours (or until the red light goes off).

Power Connection: Is the plug in good condition and properly plugged into the socket? Is the socket under current? (Test it by connecting a small appliance like a hand-mixer).

Lid Seal: The lid may not be closing properly. Test the seal by placing a piece of paper between the seal and the edge of the chest and closing the lid. It should be difficult to pull the paper out from any side. If you can pull the paper out without resistance from one or more sides, the seal may be faulty.

Heavy Ice Formation: Heavy ice on the inner walls can insulate and reduce cooling efficiency. The freezer needs to be defrosted.

Heat Source: Is the appliance exposed to direct sunlight or installed near a heat source (oven, radiator)? Protect the appliance from heat sources and check installation distances.

Overfilling: The amount of food added may not correspond with the freezing capacity of the appliance (see rating plate: XXkg/24h), or you may have filled it with too much warm food.
