Please observe the following important safety warnings for your HAIER BD-420 chest freezer:

• This appliance is designed for domestic use. If installed for professional or commercial use, the standards applicable to the respective trade must be observed.

• If you are replacing an old appliance, it is essential to destroy any existing latch or bolt locks on the old appliance before you put it aside to prevent playing children from locking themselves in.

• Ensure the old appliance is ecologically disposed of by a company specializing in environmental protections.

• After installation, the power plug should be easily accessible.

• If the power cable is damaged, an approved cable provided by a manufacturer or a service agent must be used for replacement.

• **WARNING:** Keep ventilation openings, in the appliance enclosure or in the built-in structure, clear of obstruction.

• **WARNING:** Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

• **WARNING:** Do not damage the refrigerant circuit.

• **WARNING:** Do not use electrical appliances inside the food storage compartment of the appliance, unless they are of the type recommended by the manufacturer.

• The refrigerant circuit is hermetically sealed. An improper intervention can cause an acute fire hazard. Omit any mechanical influence on the cooling system parts like the condenser, compressor, capillary tube, or drying filter.

• Interventions on the cooling system must be carried out by professional and authorized personnel only.

• Escaping refrigerant can injure your eyes. In the event of eye contact with the refrigerant, wash your eyes instantly under plenty of running water and consult an eye specialist immediately.

For proper installation of your HAIER BD-420 chest freezer, follow these guidelines:

1. **Choice of Position:** Place your appliance in a cool, well-aired, dry room. Strictly avoid high ambient temperatures and direct sunlight. Installation near a heat source like a heater or oven is highly inappropriate and will increase power consumption.

2. **Clearances:** If installation near a heat source is unavoidable, use a suitable insulation plate (do not use asbestos) and observe the following minimum distances:

• From gas or electric cooker: 3 cm

• From radiator or oven: 5 cm

• From a wall, piece of furniture or another appliance: 2 cm

3. **Ventilation:** Never obstruct the ventilation grille (F), if your model is equipped with one. If your freezer has a ventilation grille, it can be placed directly against a wall, but not with the side protected by the grille. For freezers without a ventilation grille, leave sufficient space between the rear of the appliance and the wall for warm air to escape.

4. **Leveling:** The appliance must be placed horizontally and on a leveled base to ensure an impeded circuit of the refrigerant and optimum function.

5. **Stabilization Time:** **IMPORTANT!** Leave the appliance to stand in its final position for at least 2 hours before switching it on. This allows the refrigerant circuit to stabilize and prevents operating problems.

6. **Initial Cleaning:** Thoroughly clean the interior compartment with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar to remove the typical new appliance odor. Do not use washing liquids, sharp or granular cleaning implements, or any cleaning products containing soda. Ensure the inner area, especially the corners, is absolutely dry before connecting the appliance.

Your HAIER BD-420 must be connected to a power socket with a grounded connection, which conforms to respective standards and has been installed by an authorized specialist.

Before you connect the plug, make absolutely sure that the voltage (V) on the appliance’s rating plate corresponds with that of your mains supply. If the voltage differs, notify the after-sales service or your dealer immediately and do not connect the appliance.

The temperature control (Thermostat) switches the appliance on and off and sets the cooling temperature. To prevent accidental modification, the control is intentionally resistant to turning. To adjust the setting, it is recommended to use a coin or a screwdriver.

The compressor stops when the control panel marking is on position “0” or “OFF” (not all models have this function).

The temperature is factory preset for satisfactory food storage. However, you can adjust it for your personal satisfaction between:

• **Min. / minimum number:** Slight cooling

• **Max. / maximum number:** Lowest temperature

Temperature settings should be based on the ambient temperature, quantity of stored food, and frequency of opening. A medium setting is recommended.

1. Fully unpack the appliance.

2. Remove the polystyrene parts in the compressor chamber (if supplied).

3. Remove documents and any accessories from the inside of the appliance.

4. Clean the interior with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar, and dry thoroughly with a cloth.

5. Close the appliance.

6. Insert the plug in the socket.

7. Switch on the appliance by turning the temperature control to the right. For the time being, turn the controller fully to the right to the Max position (green and red lights go on).

8. If equipped with a SUPER FREEZE SWITCH, turn it on (yellow light goes on too).

9. Do not open the appliance for about 4 hours, or as long as the red light is on, to allow the interior temperature to drop to the necessary level.

10. You can now fill the appliance with any amount of deep-frozen food (purchased ready frozen goods).

11. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH again after 24 hours at the latest.

12. If you wish to freeze fresh, unfrozen food, proceed to the chapter “Freezing/storage of fresh food”.

The indicator lights on your HAIER BD-420 provide the following information:

• **green = CONTROL:** The appliance is under current and operating. The green control light must always be on when the appliance is connected and switched on. It is an important indicator, as in a power failure, the red and yellow lights stop operating and no longer provide a warning.

• **red = ALARM:** The interior temperature is too high. The red indicator light may go on during the first start-up, after defrosting, or when filling the freezer with fresh food. In these cases, it is normal and will go off automatically when the interior temperature reaches approximately -15°C. If the red light stays on for more than 12 to 24 hours, there may be a serious problem.

• **yellow = SUPER FREEZE SWITCH is on:** The thermostat function is disabled, and the compressor continues cooling until the SUPER FREEZE switch is turned off again.

If your HAIER BD-420 is supplied with a **Warning Buzzer**, it will sound when the red indicator light goes on. The buzzer is silenced automatically when you turn on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH.

Almost all fresh products are suitable for freezing and storage. Pack fresh products in portions suitable for your household. Label the fresh products clearly with the following information:

• Product name (e.g., beef fillet)

• Weight of portion

• Quantity (total of pieces)

• Freezing date

• Use by date

Then continue as follows:

a) Place fresh foods in the pre-freezing compartment at the side (I) (if equipped) or on the bottom of the freezer, which is the coldest part. Avoid putting fresh foods in direct contact with already deep-frozen food.

b) Within 24 hours, fill in only quantities of fresh food suitable for the freezing capacity of your appliance (see rating plate for XX kg/24h).

c) If available, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH. This is not necessary when filling in already frozen items.

d) After 24 hours, shift the deep-frozen goods from the freezer bottom or pre-freeze shelf to a hanging basket (K), making the pre-freeze shelf or bottom available for additional fresh foods.

e) Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (yellow light goes off).

f) Set the temperature control according to the filling capacity (see “Maximum stacking height”).

g) Keep the temperature in the storage shelf (E) under control. The storage temperature must always be at least -18°C.

For refilling, make sure you add fresh food in adequate quantities earliest 24 hours after the previous filling, and do not exceed the maximum stacking height.

To ensure correct storage of frozen food, never fill the storage shelf (E) up to the edge. Always allow space between the lid and the frozen foods.

Set the temperature control strictly according to the filling capacity. To save energy in normal ambient temperatures (+18 to +22°C), use the following settings for the temperature control:

• Do not store any bottles containing liquids. Liquid expands when frozen and the bottle can explode.

• Never keep containers with explosive substances (gas lighters, petrol, ether, etc.) in the freezer compartment.

• When storing ready-frozen food, you must observe the manufacturer’s instructions on the food packaging.

• Deep-frozen ice cream and ice lollies must be eaten only a few minutes after being taken from the appliance to avoid injury to lips and tongue (danger of skin detachment).

• For the same reason, avoid touching the inner walls with wet hands.

• Whenever cleaning or defrosting, remove the power plug.

• After closing the freezer lid, do not open it immediately or force it open. Any vacuum on the seal is released after about 1 or 2 minutes, allowing the lid to be opened normally.

• To prevent condensation and ice forming, allow cooked food to cool down to ambient temperature before storage.

• Leave the freezer lid open as briefly as possible to avoid wasting energy and excessive ice formation.

• If the red indicator light goes on unexpectedly, do not open the lid and take appropriate measures immediately.

• Do not use a screwdriver or other metal objects to remove ice. Use only plastic or wooden scrapers.

For the upkeep of your HAIER BD-420, follow these cleaning and maintenance steps:

• **Exterior:** Clean the external appearance now and again with furniture polish or another enamel-protecting product. Never use it on the inside.

• **Seal:** Clean the lid seal (B) with warm water now and again without using any cleaning product.

• **Condenser:** If your appliance has a condenser (R) on the rear, from time to time remove dirt and dust with a light brush or duster. Dust and dirt impede heat release and increase energy consumption.

• **Long-term Disuse:** If you leave your appliance out of use for an extended period (e.g., holidays), leave it open to prevent odors from building up inside. For models with locks, when the chest lid is open, set the lock in the “closed” position and keep the key away from small children.

• **Ice Removal:** When ice and frost layers form on the inner walls, they must be removed from time to time. To remove ice, use a plastic or wood scraper without sharp edges. Cover the frozen food with a cloth to help collect the scraped ice for simple removal.

Under normal conditions (3 to 4 openings per day), the freezer must be defrosted once or twice a year. Never use electrical appliances like hair dryers, fan heaters, or devices with a naked flame (e.g., candles) to defrost the chest freezer.

Proceed as follows:

1. Provide a suitable non-metallic container (plastic container or wash-basket).

2. Make absolutely sure that you remove the plug from the power socket.

3. Dry your hands thoroughly to prevent skin damage by contact with ice (it is advisable to use gloves).

4. Remove all frozen food from the freezer, roll it firmly in newspaper, put it into the container, and place the container in a cool, dry room.

5. Cover the container all around with a thick blanket.

6. Lift the divider (H) (if equipped) upwards out of the guide-rail of the freezer.

7. Use the divider (if provided) as a defrosting dish and push it on the side under the freezer where the defrosting water drain-plug is located.

8. Pull the plug (if provided) out of the freezer bottom.

9. As previously described, scrape the thickest ice carefully from the freezer inside and put it into the kitchen sink for defrosting.

10. If necessary, speed up defrosting by placing a large pot of warm (not too hot) water on the freezer bottom.

11. In freezers not provided with a drain plug, continuously wipe up the water with a sponge.

12. Thoroughly clean the inside. Rinse it with a mixture of warm water and vinegar, then rinse with clear water.

13. Wipe the freezer with an absorbent cloth thoroughly dry and allow it to air for about 3 to 4 minutes.

14. Replace the drain-plug (if provided).

15. Empty the defrosting water dish (if provided) and slide it back as a divider into the guide rails of the freezer.

16. Close the chest and plug it back into the socket.

17. Set the temperature control to maximum setting (green and red lamps go on) and switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) (yellow lamp lights additionally).

18. Now refill the frozen food, placing the oldest items at the top. Carry out steps 1 to 17 within a maximum of two hours to prevent food from defrosting.

19. When the red lamp goes off, reset the temperature control as per the filling capacity suitable for storage temperature.

20. Switch off the SUPER FREEZER SWITCH (if provided) after about 8 to 12 hours, or latest after 24 hours (the yellow light goes off).

If your HAIER BD-420 is equipped with lighting, a switch is built in that turns the light on automatically when the appliance is opened and off when it is closed. The lamp is protected with a transparent cover. Strictly use a 15W max. replacement bulb.

In the event of problems or a power failure, the insulation of the appliance walls provides 10 to 12 hours of storage time. If it takes longer to eliminate a problem, the frozen food in the appliance will begin to defrost. Therefore, take prompt action to eliminate the problem and, if necessary, shift frozen food into another appliance.

If you are experiencing cooling issues with your HAIER BD-420, check the following possible causes and remedies:

• **Stabilization Time:** Did you let the appliance stand for at least 2 hours before switching it on to stabilize the refrigerant flow circuit? If not, unplug the appliance, close the lid, lift it for a moment, and put it back down. After 2 hours, plug it back in. Do not open the chest for a further 12 hours, or until the red light goes off.

• **Power Connection:** Is the plug in good condition and properly plugged into the socket? Is the socket receiving power? (Test by connecting a small appliance like a hand-mixer).

• **Lid Seal:** The lid of the appliance may not be closing properly, or the seal does not press firmly. Test this by placing a piece of writing paper between the seal and the edge of the chest and closing the lid. It should be difficult to pull the paper out from any side. If you can pull the paper out without resistance from one or more sides, notify your after-sales service center.

• **Ice Formation:** Heavy ice formation on the inner walls can act as insulation. Defrost the freezer as per the “Cleaning and Maintenance” instructions.

• **Heat Exposure:** Is the appliance exposed to direct sunlight or installed near a heat source (oven, radiator, etc.)? Protect the appliance from direct sunlight, check the distance to the heat source, and place an isolating plate if necessary.

• **Overfilling:** The amount of food does not correspond with the freezing capacity of your appliance (see rating plate: XXkg/24h), or you have filled it with too much warm food.
