The CANON E3400 printer offers the following connection methods:

Wireless Connection:

Connection methods vary depending on the wireless router type.

You can change network settings such as the network name (SSID) and security protocol on the printer.

Wireless Direct:

Connect the printer and devices directly without using a wireless router.

While using Wireless Direct, an internet connection from the printer is unavailable, and web services for the printer cannot be used.

You can connect up to five devices at the same time. Trying to connect a sixth device will result in an error.

USB Connection:

You can connect the printer and a computer using a USB cable.

The default network settings for the CANON E3400 are as follows:

To print the current network settings of your CANON E3400 from the operation panel, follow these steps:

1. Check that the printer is turned on.

2. Load two sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper.

3. Press the Information button.

The printer will start printing the network setting information. The printout contains important information about your network, so handle it with care.

To change the Wi-Fi connection method (infrastructure or Wireless Direct) on your CANON E3400, follow these steps:

For Windows:

Perform settings on the Network Settings screen on IJ Network Device Setup Utility. Before you perform these settings, you must turn on Easy wireless connect mode on the printer:

1. Check that the printer is turned on.

2. Press and hold the (Wireless connect) button for 3 seconds.

To set up and use Wireless Direct to connect a device like a computer, smartphone, or tablet directly to your CANON E3400, follow this procedure:

1. Prepare the printer:

1. Make sure the printer is turned on.

2. Press the Wireless select button. The icon will appear on the LCD, indicating Wireless Direct is enabled.

2. Connect your device to the printer:

1. Enable the Wi-Fi function on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

2. From the list of available networks, select “XXXXXX-E3400series” (where “XXXXXX” represents the last six digits of the printer’s MAC address).

3. Enter the password when prompted. The password is the printer’s serial number. You can print the network setting information to confirm the password.

Your device is now connected to the printer. You can print from your device by installing Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY if you haven’t already.

Follow these steps to load paper into the rear tray of your CANON E3400:

1. Prepare the paper by aligning its edges. If the paper is curled, flatten it by gently bending the corners in the opposite direction.

2. Open the paper support (A).

3. Pull out the paper output tray (B) and the output tray extension (C).

4. Open the paper guide (D) by sliding it to the left.

5. Load the paper stack vertically against the far right of the rear tray with the print side facing you.

6. Adjust the paper guide (D) to fit snugly against the left side of the paper stack. Do not slide it too tightly.

7. After loading the paper, the Paper status and current paper size will flash on the LCD.

8. Press the Paper Select button (H) to choose the correct paper size, then press the OK button (I) to confirm.

To load an original on the platen (scanner glass) of your CANON E3400, follow these steps:

1. Open the document cover.

2. Place the original with the side to be scanned facing down on the platen.

3. Align a corner of the original with the alignment mark on the platen.

4. Gently close the document cover.

Do not place objects weighing 4.4 lb (2.0 kg) or more on the platen glass.

Do not apply pressure of 4.4 lb (2.0 kg) or more on the platen glass.

After loading the original, ensure the document cover is closed before starting a copy or scan.

When you need to replace a FINE cartridge in your CANON E3400, follow this procedure:

1. Make sure the printer is turned on.

2. Retract the paper output tray and its extension.

3. Open the cover (C). The FINE cartridge holder (D) will move to the replacement position. Do not touch the holder until it stops completely.

4. Remove the empty FINE cartridge:

– Push down the ink cartridge lock lever (E) for the empty cartridge until it clicks.

– Remove the FINE cartridge (F).

5. Prepare the new FINE cartridge:

– Take the new cartridge out of its package and gently remove the protective tape (G).

You can check the ink status on your CANON E3400 by observing the Color Ink and Black Ink lamps in copy standby mode.

Color Ink lamp or Black Ink lamp is lit:

This indicates the ink is running low. You should prepare a new ink cartridge. Print quality may not be satisfactory if you continue printing.

Color Ink lamp or Black Ink lamp is flashing, while the Alarm lamp is flashing:

An error has occurred. An error code will also be displayed on the LCD. Check the error code and take the appropriate action.

The upper lamp indicates the black FINE cartridge status, and the lower lamp indicates the color FINE cartridge status.

If your CANON E3400 produces blurred or uneven print results, follow these maintenance steps:

Step 1: Print the nozzle check pattern.

This helps determine if the ink is ejecting properly from the print head nozzles.

Step 2: Examine the nozzle check pattern.

Look for missing lines or horizontal white streaks in the pattern. If you see these issues, the print head needs cleaning.

Step 3: Clean the print head.

Use the printer’s cleaning function. After cleaning, print another nozzle check pattern to see if the problem is resolved. If not, repeat the cleaning and checking process one more time.

Step 4: Perform a deep print head cleaning.

If the problem persists after two standard cleanings, use the deep cleaning function. This uses more ink but is more thorough.

Step 5: Replace the FINE cartridge.

If the problem is still not resolved after a deep cleaning, the FINE cartridge may be empty or damaged. Replace it with a new one.

If paper is not feeding properly, the paper feed rollers may be dirty. Follow these steps to clean them:

Cleaning without paper:

1. Make sure the printer is on and remove any paper from the rear tray.

2. Press the Setup button until ‘7’ appears on the LCD.

3. Press the Black button or the Color button. The paper feed roller will rotate to be cleaned.

Cleaning with paper:

1. After the roller stops rotating from the previous step, load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the rear tray.

2. Press the Black button or the Color button. The printer will feed the paper through, cleaning the rollers. The cleaning is complete when the paper is ejected.

3. Press the Stop button.

If the problem is not resolved, you can perform a manual cleaning. Turn off the power, unplug the power cord, and wipe the paper feed rollers (B) inside the rear tray with a moistened cotton swab while rotating the shaft (A) manually. Do not touch the rollers with your fingers.

If the inside of your CANON E3400 is dirty, it can cause smudges on your printed paper. Perform a bottom plate cleaning regularly:

1. Make sure the printer is turned on.

2. Prepare a single sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper by folding it in half widthwise, then unfolding it.

3. Load only this sheet of paper into the rear tray with the open side (the crease) facing you.

4. Pull out the paper output tray and its extension.

5. Press the Setup button until ‘8’ appears on the LCD.

6. Press the Black button or the Color button.

The paper will feed through the printer, cleaning the inside. Check the ejected paper for smudges. If it is still smudged, perform the bottom plate cleaning again with a new sheet of paper.

When relocating your CANON E3400, follow these steps to ensure safe transport:

1. With the FINE cartridge still installed, press the ON button to turn the printer off. This allows the printer to automatically cap the print head, preventing it from drying out.

2. Check that the ON lamp is off, then unplug the power cord and any other cables.

3. Retract the paper output tray, its extension, and close the paper support.

4. Use adhesive tape to secure all covers on the printer to prevent them from opening during transportation.

5. Pack the printer in a sturdy box, placing it with its bottom facing down. Use sufficient protective material to protect it.

6. Keep the box level during transport. Do not tilt it or turn it on its side or upside down, as this may cause ink to leak.

The operation panel of your CANON E3400 includes the following buttons and lamps:

ON button (A) / ON lamp (B): Turns the power on or off. The lamp lights when the power is on.

The LCD on your CANON E3400 displays various icons to show the printer’s status:

Network status (A):

Wi-Fi and Wireless Direct are enabled.

Wi-Fi is enabled.

Wireless Direct is enabled.

If neither icon is displayed, both are disabled.

Current network status (B): Shows Wi-Fi signal strength.

Signal strength: 81% or more (Good connection).

Signal strength: 51% or more (Connection may be unstable).

Signal strength: 50% or less (Connection is likely unstable).

Wi-Fi is enabled but not connected to a router.

Segment display (C): Displays the number of copies, maintenance codes, or error codes.

Paper status (D): Appears when paper is loaded in the rear tray.

Paper size (E): Displays the currently selected paper size.

Setup (F): Appears when you press the Setup button, indicating you are in a maintenance/settings menu.

Turning on the printer:

1. Press the ON button. The ON lamp will flash and then remain lit, indicating the printer is on.

Turning off the printer:

1. Press the ON button. When the ON lamp stops flashing and turns off, the printer is off.

You can also set the printer to automatically turn on when a print/scan job is received, or automatically turn off after a period of inactivity. These settings can be changed from the printer’s operation panel or from the printer driver software on your computer.

This procedure describes basic printing using the Quick Setup tab in the printer driver:

1. Make sure your CANON E3400 is turned on and paper is loaded.

2. Open the printer driver’s setup window from your application’s print dialog.

3. On the Quick Setup tab, use “Commonly Used Settings” to select a predefined print profile (e.g., Standard, Photo Printing, Business Document).

4. When you select a profile, settings for Additional Features, Media Type, and Printer Paper Size automatically switch to the predefined values.

4. Press the Black button for a black & white copy, or the Color button for a color copy.

The number ‘1’ will flash on the LCD. To make multiple copies, press the Black or Color button repeatedly to increase the copy count. When the display changes from flashing to lit, the printer will start copying. Remove the original after copying is complete.

Error code 1000 indicates that the printer is out of paper. To resolve this, load paper in the rear tray and press the printer’s OK button to cancel the error and resume printing.

Error code 1300 means that paper is jammed when feeding from the rear tray. To resolve this:

1. Slowly pull the jammed paper out from either the paper output slot or the rear tray, whichever is easier. Use both hands to pull gently and avoid tearing the paper.

2. If the paper tears and you cannot remove it, you will need to open the printer cover to remove the remaining pieces from inside.

3. Once the jam is cleared, reload the paper correctly and press the printer’s OK button to resume.

Error codes 168A and 1401 indicate that a FINE cartridge is not installed or not installed properly. To fix this, open the cover and install the FINE cartridge correctly. If the error persists, the cartridge may be damaged and you should contact service.

Error code 1700 indicates that the ink absorber is almost full. Press the printer’s OK button to continue printing. However, you should contact a Canon service center to request a repair and have the ink absorber replaced.

Error code 5100 indicates a general printer error, often related to the movement of the FINE cartridge holder. To resolve this:

1. If you are printing, press the printer’s Stop button to cancel the job, then turn off the printer.

2. Open the cover and check for any impediments such as jammed paper, stabilizers, or other foreign objects that might be blocking the FINE cartridge holder’s path. Remove any impediment you find. Be careful not to touch the clear film (A).

3. Ensure the FINE cartridges are properly installed by pushing up the ink cartridge lock lever until it clicks.

4. Close the cover and turn the printer back on.

If the problem is not solved, contact your nearest Canon service center to request a repair.

Error code 5B00 indicates a printer error has occurred that requires service. You should contact your nearest Canon service center to request a repair.

If your CANON E3400 printer does not turn on, try these checks:

Check 1: Press the ON button.

Check 2: Make sure the power plug is securely connected to both the printer and the power outlet, and then try turning it on again.

Check 3: Unplug the printer from the power outlet, leave it for at least 2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.

If these steps do not solve the problem, contact a Canon service center for a repair.

If your CANON E3400 printer turns off automatically, it is likely that the auto power off setting is enabled. This feature shuts the printer down after a specified period of inactivity.

To disable this setting from the operation panel:

1. Make sure the printer is turned on.

2. Press the Setup button repeatedly until “12” appears on the LCD.

3. Press the Black button. The auto power off feature will be disabled.

You can also manage this setting from the Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool on your computer.

If your CANON E3400 is not communicating with your computer via USB, perform the following checks:

Check 1: Make sure the printer is turned on.

Check 2: Ensure the USB cable is connected properly. The USB port is at the back of the printer. Check the orientation of the “Type-B” connector and ensure it is fully inserted into the printer and the computer.
