What is included in the carton with the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers?

When you unbox your BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers, you should check the carton for the following items:

• 2 Foam plugs

• 8 Self-adhesive rubber supporting feet

How should I install my BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers?

The BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speaker is primarily designed to be mounted on a dedicated floor stand (such as the STAV24 S2) for optimal performance. However, it can be placed on a shelf if preferred, though this offers less flexibility for optimization. If you must use a shelf, it is recommended to use the supplied foam bung inserts to optimize port performance.

In both installation scenarios, the speakers’ tweeters should be positioned at approximately ear height from your usual listening position.

Note: If using a shelf, ensure it is strong enough to properly support the weight of the speaker. You should also fit the 4 rubber supporting feet to the underside of the speaker.

What is the recommended positioning for the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 in a conventional stereo system?

For a conventional stereo setup, your BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers should be positioned between 1.5m and 3m apart. They should form two corners of an equilateral triangle, with the listening area being the third corner. The speakers should also be placed approximately 0.5m away from the back wall and at least 0.5m away from any side walls.

For best results, try to ensure that the immediate surroundings of each speaker are similar in acoustic character. Mismatched surroundings (e.g., one speaker near a bare wall and the other near soft furnishings) can compromise the overall sound quality and stereo image.

How should I position my BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers for a home theatre system?

When using the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers as the front channels in a home theatre system, they should be placed closer together than they would be for a 2-channel audio setup. This is because the surround channels tend to widen the image. Positioning the speakers within approximately 0.5m of the sides of the screen helps keep the sound image in scale with the visual image. As with stereo positioning, the speakers should ideally be at least 0.5m away from any side walls.

Do the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers create stray magnetic fields?

Yes, the speaker drive units create stray magnetic fields that extend beyond the cabinet. It is recommended to keep magnetically sensitive articles at least 0.5m away from the speaker. Such articles include:

• CRT television and computer screens

• Computer discs

• Audio and video tapes

• Swipe cards and similar items

LCD, OLED, and plasma screens are not affected by magnetic fields.

How do I connect the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers to my amplifier?

First, ensure all audio equipment is switched off before making connections. The back of the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speaker has two linked pairs of terminals (HF and LF).

Conventional Connection:

Leave the terminal links in place as delivered. Connect just one pair of terminals to your amplifier.

Bi-wire or Bi-amplification:

For these connections, you must remove the terminal links. Then, connect each pair of terminals (HF and LF) to the amplifier or amplifiers independently. Bi-wiring can improve the resolution of low-level detail.

For all connections, ensure the positive terminals on the speaker (marked + and colored red) are connected to the positive output terminal on the amplifier. Similarly, the negative terminals on the speaker (marked – and colored black) must be connected to the negative output terminal on the amplifier. Incorrect connection can result in poor imaging and a loss of bass.

How can I fine-tune the sound of my BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers?

Before fine-tuning, ensure all connections are correct and secure.

Adjusting Bass with Speaker Position:

• Moving the speakers further from the walls will generally reduce the volume of bass and can help create an aural impression of depth.

• Conversely, moving the speakers closer to the walls will increase the volume of bass.

Adjusting Bass with Foam Plugs:

If you cannot move the speakers but want to reduce the bass volume, you can use the supplied foam bungs. The bungs are a two-piece part, allowing for different levels of bass reduction:

• For less severe bass reduction, use only the outer, larger-diameter foam ring in the port tube.

• For more bass reduction, use the complete two-part bung assembly.

Addressing Uneven Bass:

If the bass seems uneven with frequency, this is likely due to your listening room’s acoustics. Small changes in speaker or listening position can have a significant effect, especially at low frequencies. Try moving your listening position or locating your speakers along a different wall.

Using Floor Stands:

If using floor stands, ensure they rest firmly on the floor. Use carpet piercing spikes if needed and adjust them to eliminate any unevenness. If using STAV24 S2 stands, it is recommended to mass-load them by filling each stand to its maximum volume with a material like kiln-dried sand to deliver the best stability and performance.

Is there a “running in” period for the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers?

Yes, the performance of the BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speaker will change subtly during the initial listening period. If the speaker has been in a cold environment, the damping compounds and suspension materials of the drive units will need time to recover their correct mechanical properties. The drive unit suspensions will also loosen up during the first hours of use.

As a guide, allow up to a week for the temperature effects to stabilize and 15 hours of average use for the mechanical parts to achieve their intended design characteristics.

How should I clean and care for my BOWERS & WILKINS 607 speakers?

Cabinet Surfaces:

The cabinet surfaces will usually only require dusting. If you wish to use an aerosol or other cleaner, apply the cleaner onto a cloth first, not directly onto the speaker. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first, as some cleaning products may damage surfaces. Avoid products that are abrasive or contain acid, alkali, or antibacterial agents.

Marks on the paint surface may be removed with a dilute perfume-free soap solution. Any remaining streak marks can be removed by spraying with a proprietary glass cleaner and lightly wiping dry with a microfibre cloth.

Drive Units:

Do not use any cleaning agents on the speaker drive units and avoid touching them, as damage may result.
