The following accessories are included with the WMF ESPRESSO PRO:

Before using your WMF ESPRESSO PRO for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Remove all existing stickers before assembling and using the appliance for the first time.

2. Clean and properly dry the machine, components, and accessories. Do not forget the filter baskets in the storage tray (O). Use the supplied cleaning cloth (13) to clean all surfaces.

3. Ensure that the appliance is properly assembled.

4. Remove the water tank (A) and insert the supplied water filter (8) using the installation tool (9). Ensure the water filter is correctly inserted.

5. Fill the water tank (A) with fresh drinking water up to the “MAX” mark and insert it into the machine. Use only cold water and do not leave water in the device unused for more than 4 days.

6. Insert the bean container (B) into the machine by turning it clockwise until it clicks into place and fill it with coffee beans.

7. Insert the portafilter (1) without a filter basket into the brewing unit (I) and turn the handle to the right (from “Insert” to “Lock”).

8. Connect the device to the mains and switch it on using the power switch (L) on the right side. Wait until the device has heated up and the buttons on the control panel stop pulsating.

9. Place a container with a capacity of at least 1 liter under all outlets: the brewing unit (I), hot water outlet (J), and steam lance (K).

10. Dispense a double espresso twice without ground coffee by pressing the 2-cup brewing button. Use the portafilter (1) without a filter basket.

11. Dispense approx. 80 ml of hot water twice by pressing the hot water button.

12. Dispense the steam once by pressing the steam button.

13. Remove the container, empty the drip tray (N), and reinsert it.

14. Set the water hardness as described in the general settings section. The appliance is now ready for use.

To make espresso with your WMF ESPRESSO PRO, follow these steps:

1. Select the appropriate filter basket (2 for 1-cup or 3 for 2-cups) and insert it into the portafilter. Ensure the basket is clean and dry.

2. Place the funnel (5) on the portafilter (1) and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.

3. Insert the portafilter (1) with the funnel into the portafilter holder of the grinder outlet (H).

4. Press the 1 or 2-cup grinding button to start grinding. The display will show the grind setting and then the grinding quantity. The grind setting can be changed during the process using the knob (E). The grinding process can be stopped at any time by pressing the grinding button again or the ON/OFF button.

5. Pull the portafilter (1) straight out of the grinder outlet (H). Gently tap it to evenly distribute the coffee powder.

6. Place the portafilter (1) on the edge of a table and tamp the coffee powder firmly (approx. 10–15 kg) to create a level surface.

7. Remove the funnel (5) and wipe off any excess coffee powder from the edge of the portafilter.

8. Dispense water from the brewing unit (I) for a few seconds using the 1 or 2-cup brewing button to preheat it and remove any residue.

9. Insert the portafilter (1) into the brewing unit (I) and turn the handle to the right to lock it. Place your cup(s) under the portafilter outlets.

10. Press the 1 or 2-cup brewing button to start the brewing process. The extraction time and pressure will be shown on the display and pressure gauge (G). The machine will stop automatically.

11. After waiting a few seconds to avoid burns, remove the portafilter (1) by turning the handle to the left. Knock the used coffee grounds out of the filter basket.

12. If necessary, rinse the portafilter and filter basket under running water or with the hot water dispenser.

To froth milk with your WMF ESPRESSO PRO, follow these steps:

1. Fill the milk jug (13) with cold milk up to the “MAX” mark. For best results, use fresh, cold milk (pasteurized or UHT).

2. Dispense steam for about 5 seconds by pressing the steam button to remove condensation from the pipe. Point the steam lance (K) towards the drip tray (N) or into another container.

3. Pull out the steam lance (K) as far as possible and place it in the milk jug.

4. Press the steam button to start frothing. Froth until you achieve a satisfactory milk foam, ensuring the milk does not get hotter than 65°C.

5. Always clean the steam lance immediately after switching off the steam.

To achieve the best results when frothing milk, proceed as follows:

1. Hold the milk jug at a slight angle and immerse the steam lance approx. 1-2 cm into the milk.

2. Once the milk moves in a circle, move the milk jug downwards until the steam lance almost reaches the surface, and it starts to hiss. Maintain the swirling motion.

3. As soon as the milk is lukewarm (approx. 35°C), move the milk jug upwards again to stop the hissing. Continue to maintain the swirling motion.

4. When the milk is hot enough and the foam is satisfying, end the process with the steam button.

To dispense hot water, follow these steps:

1. Place a cup under the hot water outlet (J).

2. Press the hot water button once. The machine will start dispensing hot water and stop automatically when the set amount is dispensed. This can be stopped at any time by pressing the hot water button again or the ON/OFF button.

Alternatively, press and hold the hot water button for continuous water dispensing. The dispensing stops when the button is released. The maximum amount of water that can be dispensed is 300 ml.

You can adjust various settings on your WMF ESPRESSO PRO by pressing the settings button (three lines) to cycle through the options and using the (+/–) buttons to change the values. The settings are saved when you switch to the next setting.

General Settings:

• Grinding Time: Select the grinding time setting, press the 1 or 2-cup grinding button, and adjust the time in seconds with (+/–).
• Water Quantity: Select the water quantity setting, press the 1 or 2-cup brewing button or hot water button, and adjust the volume in ml with (+/–).
• Brewing Temperature: Select the brewing temperature setting and adjust the temperature between 89°C and 96°C (192°F and 205°F) with (+/–).
• Pre-Infusion Time: Select the pre-infusion time setting and adjust the duration between 0 and 10 seconds with (+/–).
• Water Hardness: Select the water hardness setting and choose the appropriate level (H1 to H4) with (+/–).
• Water Filter: Select the water filter setting. Use (+) to select “Yes” if you are using a filter, or (–) for “No”. Press and hold (+/–) simultaneously to save the setting.

Additional Settings (Press and hold the settings button for at least 3 seconds):

• Sound Volume: Adjust the volume between L1 and L5, or turn it off (LoF).
• Ambient Light: Turn the ambient light on or off.
• Temperature Unit: Switch between °C and °F.
• Eco Mode: Turn Eco mode on or off. When on, the steam heater does not heat up on startup.
• Switch Off Time (Standby): Adjust the auto-off time between 5 minutes (t5) and 60 minutes (t60).

To reset all settings on your WMF ESPRESSO PRO to the factory defaults, follow these steps:

1. In operating mode, press and hold the ON/OFF button for at least 5 seconds until “rES” appears on the display and a signal tone sounds.

2. Press the (+) button to reset all settings. A signal tone will sound to confirm.

This process can be canceled by pressing the ON/OFF button before confirming with the (+) button. The process will also be automatically canceled after 30 seconds of inactivity.

The descaling program should be started when the descaling alarm lights up red, or every 90 days. The process consists of two parts: descaling and rinsing.

1. Remove the water filter (8) from the water tank (A).

2. Dissolve 100 ml of liquid WMF descaler in 650 ml of water in the water tank. The water level must reach the “CALC” mark.

3. Remove the filter basket from the portafilter (1).

4. Insert the portafilter (1) into the brewing unit (I) and lock it.

5. Remove the nozzle from the steam lance (K).

6. Empty the drip tray (N).

7. Place a container (at least 1 liter) under all outlets: brewing unit (I), hot water outlet (J), and steam lance (K).

8. Select the water hardness setting and press the hot water button. “d1” will be shown on the display.

9. Press the hot water button again to start the descaling program. “d1” and a waiting cursor will be shown alternately. After approx. 20 minutes, the first part is finished, and “d2” will be shown on the display.

10. Empty the container and place it back under all outlets.

11. Empty the water tank (A) and rinse it thoroughly.

12. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water up to the “MAX” mark and reinsert it.

13. Press the hot water button to start the rinsing program. “d2” and a waiting cursor will be shown alternately. After approx. 5 minutes, the second part is finished, and “End” will be shown on the display.

14. Remove the container, empty the drip tray (N), and reinsert it.

15. Reattach the nozzle to the steam lance (K).

16. Reinsert the water filter (8) into the water tank (A).

17. Press the hot water button to return to operating mode. The descaling program is finished.

• If the 1 and 2-cup brewing, hot water, and steam buttons pulse: The device is heating up. Wait until the buttons light up continuously.
• If the steam button pulses separately: The device is heating up the steam heater, or Eco mode may be activated. Wait until the button lights up continuously.
• If the 1 and 2-cup grinding buttons pulse: The bean container is not inserted. Insert the bean container until it clicks into place.
• If the 1 and 2-cup brewing, hot water, and steam buttons pulse (and the device is not heating up): The water tank is not inserted correctly, or there is too little or no water in the tank. Ensure the water tank is inserted correctly and fill it up to the “MAX” mark.

An error code of “E1”, “E3”, “E4”, “E7”, “E8”, “E9”, or “E10” indicates that the device is defective. You should switch off the device immediately, disconnect it from the mains, and contact an authorized service center.

The error code “E2” indicates that the grinder is blocked. Clean the grinder as described in the “Cleaning and Care” chapter. If the problem remains, contact an authorized customer service center.

• “E6”: The integrated scale is defective. Contact an authorized customer service center.
• “E11”: The grinder is overheated. Switch the device off for 5 minutes.
• “E12”: The grinder is defective. Contact an authorized customer service center.

If no espresso runs out, or only a few drops, and the brewing pressure increases significantly, the cause could be one of the following:

• Water tank not inserted correctly: Ensure the tank is properly seated.
• Too little or no water in the tank: Fill the water tank to the “MAX” mark.
• Water filter is blocked: Replace the water filter.
• Brewing unit outlet is blocked: Clean the brewing unit.
• Filter basket is blocked: Clean the filter basket.
• Incorrect filter basket used: You may have used the blind filter. Use the 1 or 2-cup filter basket.
• Coffee grind is too fine or too much powder: Set the grind setting higher or use less coffee powder.
• Coffee powder was tamped too firmly: Use less force when tamping (approx. 10–15 kg).
• Problem with the water system or device defect: Carry out a descaling or cleaning process. If the problem persists, switch off the device and contact an authorized service center.

If espresso runs over the edges of the portafilter, check for the following issues:

• Portafilter not inserted correctly: Clean the brewing unit and ensure the portafilter is inserted correctly.
• Coffee powder on the edge of the filter basket: Remove the coffee powder from the edge and ensure the portafilter is inserted correctly.
• Too much coffee powder in the filter basket: Ensure you are using the correct filter basket for the desired amount and pay attention to the recommended amount of coffee powder.
• The seal of the brewing unit is dirty or has lost its elasticity: Clean the brewing unit. If the problem persists, have the seal replaced by an authorized service center.
• The outlet on the brewing unit is blocked: Clean the brewing unit as described in the “Cleaning and Care” chapter.

If the pump is louder than usual, it could be due to:

• The water tank is not inserted correctly: Ensure the tank is inserted correctly and press down lightly if necessary.
• The water filter is blocked: Replace the water filter and reinsert it correctly.
• A problem with the water system or a device defect: Carry out a descaling process. If the problem remains, switch off the device and contact an authorized service center.
