How do I light a burner on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB cooktop?

Your WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB cooktop is fitted with mains-powered electronic ignition. Follow these steps to light a burner:

1. Ensure the appliance is connected to power. Depressing any knob will release sparks to all burners.

2. To light a specific burner, depress the corresponding control knob and turn it anti-clockwise to the ‘High’ position.

3. While depressing the knob, push it down as far as possible and hold for approximately 5 seconds. This engages the flame safeguard sensor.

4. Release the knob. The flame should remain lit.

5. If the flame goes out when the knob is released, depress the knob again, holding it down with slightly more force for the same length of time.

6. Adjust the flame height by turning the control knob towards the ‘Low’ position.

Important Notes:

• Keep hands clear of burners when lighting.

• If a burner does not light within 5 seconds, turn the knob to the ‘Off’ position, allow the gas to disperse, and then try lighting it again.

• Burners must only be operated between the ‘HIGH’ and ‘LOW’ settings.

• In the absence of electrical power, you can light the burner directly with a hand-held ignition source.

How should I choose the correct burner and pan for cooking on the WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB?

For best results and to conserve gas, match the pot or pan size to the burner size and adjust the flame height correctly.

Choosing a Burner:

Small burner: For special low heat and slow cooking.

Medium burner: For normal cooking and simmering.

Large burner: For fast heating and large pots and pans.

Wok burner: For very fast heating using a wok or large pot or pan.

Choosing a Pan:

• Use a large pot or pan for a large burner.

• Use a small pot or pan for a small burner.

• Ensure that pots or pans are steady and have flat bases to avoid dangerous spills and wasted energy.

Adjusting the Flame:

• Place the pan centrally over the burner.

• Adjust the flame so that it does not extend past the edge of the pan. A flame that is too high will waste gas and can cause handle damage.

Caution: Never use asbestos mats, wire mats or grids, or aluminium foil on the cooktop as it can lead to overheating and cracked enamel. Woks should only be used on the wok burner with the provided wok support trivet.

How do I clean my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB cooktop?

Always ensure the appliance is turned off and cool before cleaning. Always clean the appliance immediately after any food spillage.

Stainless Steel Hob:

• Ensure any oil is cleaned off the hob before first use to prevent a yellowish discoloration.

• For regular cleaning, wash with warm soapy water and rinse with clean water.

• For heavy soiling or discoloration, use a stainless steel cleaner. Do not use abrasive scourers or steel wool. When cleaning, be sure to follow the polish or brushing lines.

Trivets and Burners:

• The burners and trivets are removable for easy cleaning. NOTE: Do not place burners in a dishwasher.

• Ensure burners are thoroughly dried after cleaning or spillage.

• When cleaning the burners, ensure all flame ports are free of any blockage. Use a toothpick or brush to clear the ports if necessary.

• The outer surface of the burners has a polished finish; take extra care to avoid scratching this surface. For heavy soiling, you may need to apply a non-abrasive cleaning compound and rub with a cloth until the soiling is removed, then finish with a soft, dry cloth.

• When refitting the burners, ensure that they are correctly seated.

Ignition and Flame Safeguard Sensor:

• Gently clean the spark plug and flame safeguard sensor with a damp cloth to avoid lighting difficulties. Ensure the electrode is dry before use.

Injector:

• Ensure the injector remains free of any foreign material. If necessary, use a thin piece of wire to clear the orifice.

CAUTION:

• This appliance contains aluminium fittings. Do not use caustic-based cleaners.

• Do not use steam cleaners, as this may cause moisture build-up on electrical components.

• Harsh abrasive cleaners, powder cleaners, steel wool, or wax polishes should not be used.

What should I do if a burner on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB will not light, even though the sparker is working?

If a burner fails to light, check the following possible causes and remedies:

Knob not held down long enough: Repeat the lighting procedure, ensuring you hold the knob down in the ‘High’ position for a full 5 seconds to engage the flame safeguard.

Gas supply valve turned off: Check and turn on the gas supply to the appliance.

Wrong knob turned: Ensure the knob you are turning corresponds to the burner you want to light.

Port blockage in ignition area: Ensure that the ports in the ignition area of the burner are clean and dry.

Ignition spark plugs wet or dirty: Carefully dry or clean the ignition spark plugs.

Why is there no spark when I turn the control knob on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB?

If you do not see a spark when the control knob is activated, try the following:

Electricity supply disconnected: Switch on the electricity at the wall socket or check your household fuses/circuit breakers.

Ignition spark plugs wet or dirty: Carefully dry or clean the ignition spark plugs.

What should I do if the flame on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB is uneven or tends to lift?

If the burner flame is uneven, check these possible causes:

Flame ports blocked or wet: Clean and/or dry the flame ports on the burner cap.

Burner incorrectly fitted: Ensure the burner components (cap and crown) are fitted correctly and are level.

Why does the flame go out when I release the control knob on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB?

If the flame does not stay on after releasing the control knob, please check the following:

Knob not held down long enough: Repeat the lighting procedure and make sure to hold the knob firmly depressed for approximately 5 seconds in the ‘High’ position to allow the flame safeguard sensor to engage.

Knob not set between ‘High’ and ‘Low’: The knob MUST be set between these two positions for the burner to operate.

Dirt or spillage on flame safeguard sensor: Clean the tip of the flame safeguard sensor.

Why is my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB cooking with low heat or too slowly?

If you are experiencing low heat and slow cooking, it may be due to using an incorrect cooking pot or pan. Ensure you are using a pot or pan that is the appropriate size for the burner you are using (e.g., a large pan for the large burner).

What should I do if the benchtop or control knobs on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB are overheating?

If the surrounding benchtop or the control knobs are getting too hot, check the following:

Incorrect cooking pot or pan used: Ensure the cookware is the correct size for the burner. Using a pot or pan that is too large can cause heat to deflect downwards and to the sides.

Pot or pan not located on burner properly: Ensure the pot or pan is centrally located on the trivet over the burner.

Why has the stainless steel on my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB cooktop become discoloured?

Discoloration of the stainless steel surface can occur if a pot or pan being used is too large for the burner, causing excessive heat to radiate onto the cooktop surface. Ensure pot and pan sizes are as per the user manual requirements. You can clean the surface with a suitable stainless steel cleaner.

How do I convert my WESTINGHOUSE WHG952SB from Natural Gas to LPG?

Your appliance is supplied for Natural Gas use but includes a conversion kit for Universal LPG. This conversion must be performed by an authorised person.

Injector Conversion:

1. Remove the hotplate trivets, burner caps, and burner crowns to access the injectors.

2. Replace the factory-fitted Natural Gas injectors with the appropriate LPG injectors supplied in the kit. The injector size is stamped on the side of the injector.

Regulator Conversion:

3. Unscrew the top hat nut from the regulator.

4. The top hat nut and control pressure spring assembly will disengage as a single unit.

5. Unscrew the threaded pin from the top hat.

6. Turn the threaded pin over so the spring is free, and screw the pin back into the top hat until it is firm.

7. Refit the top hat nut assembly to the regulator, ensuring it is fully screwed down. The regulator is now set for LPG.

Final Steps and Adjustments:

8. Turn on the gas supply and check for leaks at each new connection using soapy water.

9. Adjust the minimum flame setting. One by one, turn each knob to the minimum position. Remove the knob to access the bypass screw. Screw in the bypass screw until a small, stable flame is achieved.

10. Turn the knob to maximum and then back to minimum to ensure the minimum flame is correctly maintained.

11. Attach the LPG sticker (included in the kit) to the cooker near the gas supply inlet, covering the original Natural Gas label.
