If you received your phone in the mail, and it is a new Sprint account or a new phone number, your phone is designed to activate automatically when you first turn it on. You will see a Hands Free Activation screen at startup. When it’s finished, tap OK to continue. To confirm your activation, make a phone call.


What should I do if my phone is still not activated or I do not have access to the Internet for activation?

How do I complete the setup screens on my phone?

Once activated, your phone guides you through various setup options. Note: At some point during setup, you will see a prompt to install Sprint Default Configuration. Follow the prompts to install the package and then continue with the setup screens.

1. When you see the Welcome screen, select a language and tap Next to begin.

2. You’ll see a Wi-Fi setup screen. Follow the prompts to set your Wi-Fi options.

3. Follow the prompts on the next few screens to get your phone set up. Tap Skip or Next to continue.

– Samsung account – Create or sign in to your Samsung user account.

– Got Google? – Create or sign in to a Google Account. Select additional Google preferences, including Google Location options, as prompted.

– Dropbox™ – Create or sign in to a Dropbox cloud storage account.

Your phone’s touchscreen lets you control everything through various types of touches, or gestures.

Tap: When you want to type using the onscreen keyboard, select items such as application and settings icons, or press onscreen buttons, simply tap them with your finger. A light touch works best.

Touch and hold: To display the available options for an item simply touch and hold the item.

Flick: Move your finger in lighter, quicker strokes than swiping. This finger gesture is always used in a vertical motion, such as when flicking through contacts or a message list.

Swipe or slide: Quickly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen.

Drag: Press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start to move it. Do not release your finger until you have reached the target position.

Rotate: Activate the auto-rotate feature to automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the phone sideways.

Slide: This feature allows you to enter text by sliding a finger from letter to letter, lifting only between words. This continuous input method can be used with various keyboard types.


How do I view my Home screen?

Your phone’s Home screen extends horizontally up to seven full screens.

– To display the main (center) Home screen, press the Home button from any screen.

– To view extended screens, swipe the screen left or right. There are up to three additional screens on each side of the main Home screen.

– To display thumbnails of all available screens, pinch any home screen. Tap a thumbnail to display the screen.

Your Samsung Galaxy S 4 comes loaded with two QWERTY keyboards: Samsung keyboard (default) and Swype™. When you select a field that requires text or numbers, an onscreen keyboard will appear. (If you don’t see the keyboard when, for instance, you’re entering contact information, just touch the field you’re working on to bring it up.) The phone’s onscreen QWERTY keyboards can be used in either portrait or landscape mode.

To switch between keyboard types while a keyboard is displayed, drag the notifications bar down from the top of the screen, touch Choose input method, and then touch the method you want to use.


How do I type with the Samsung Keyboard?

Entering text using the traditional Samsung QWERTY keyboard is easy: just touch the letters to type the words.

1. From a screen where you can enter text, touch the input field to reveal the onscreen keyboard.

2. If needed, select a text mode option: ABC to enter alphabetic characters or Sym to enter symbols or punctuation.

Swype lets you enter words by tracing over the letters in a single motion.

1. Touch an onscreen character, and then, while maintaining your finger onscreen, drag to the next character in the desired word.

2. Repeat this process until the desired characters have been drawn over. Select from an onscreen list of possible word matches (if prompted). This occurs if your current action has generated more than one possible word match.

Use your voice to enter text instead of typing.

1. From any screen where you can enter text, touch the input field to reveal the keyboard.

2. Touch the microphone icon and speak clearly.


How do I customize my onscreen keyboard settings?

Tap the Menu key icon > Settings > My Device > Language and input, and tap the Settings icon (gear icon) next to any of the keyboard options (Samsung keyboard or Swype). Different keyboards will provide different options.

The Samsung keyboard options include the following:

– Portrait keyboard types lets you select from a traditional QWERTY keyboard layout or a 3×4 keyboard (multi-tap) when entering text in portrait mode.

– Input languages lets you select an input language. Default is English.

– Predictive text toggles on or off to let you select whether or not you want to see possible word matches when you’re typing.

– Swiftkey flow Check or uncheck to turn Android keyboard slide entry on or off. If it’s off, you will enter text by tapping the letters one at a time as with a traditional keyboard.

– Cursor control lets you move the cursor by sliding your finger across the keyboard.

– Handwriting lets you use your finger to handwrite words that are translated into normal text for saving or sending. Select Handwriting to set handwriting options.

– Advanced offers additional options such as auto capitalization, auto-spacing, auto punctuation, character preview, and key-tap vibration and sound.

1. Dial your wireless phone number.

– To scroll, slide your finger up or down the page.

– To zoom in or out, pinch the screen.

Note: Additional browser options, such as Google Chrome™, may also be available on your phone.


How do I download apps from the Web (not Google Play)?

You can download Apps while browsing the Web, but you must first set permissions in settings to allow applications from unknown sources. Applications downloaded from the Google Play do not require additional permissions.

1. Press the Home button > Menu key icon and tap Settings > More > Security.

2. Select the Unknown sources check box.

3. When the Attention dialog box opens, read the disclaimer and tap OK.

Note: All downloaded applications are saved to your phone’s memory.


How do I connect to a Wi-Fi network?

When you’re in range of an available Wi-Fi network you can use your phone’s Wi-Fi feature to access the Internet and other data services. (Note: You may already have signed in to Wi-Fi during the phone’s setup process.)

1. Press the Home button > Menu key icon and tap Settings > Connections.

2. Tap the icon next to Wi-Fi and slide to the “on” position to turn Wi-Fi on.

3. Tap Wi-Fi and then tap Scan to display a list of available networks.

4. Tap a Wi-Fi network to connect. If necessary, enter the security key (password) and tap Connect.

– When you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, you’ll see the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar.

Note: To quickly toggle Wi-Fi on or off, pull down the Notifications panel from any screen and tap Wi-Fi. You can also toggle GPS, Sound, Screen rotation, and Bluetooth from the panel menu. Additional panel menu options are available. Pull down the Notifications panel and tap the grid icon to see additional features. To edit the options, tap the pencil icon.


How do I download apps and games from Google Play?

1. Press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > Play Store icon (shopping bag icon).

2. The first time you visit the Google Play Store app, tap Accept to accept the Terms of Service.

3. To find what you want quickly:

– Browse through featured apps and games. Scroll through the options or browse by categories within Apps, Music, Books, Magazines, Movies & TV, or Games.

– Search for an app or game. Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) at the top of the Google Play Store app home screen, enter the name or key word, and then tap the search icon in the bottom right corner.

4. Tap an app or game to read a description and user reviews.

5. Tap Install (for free apps) or the price (for paid applications) and follow the onscreen prompts.

Note: You must have a Google (Gmail) Account set up on your phone to purchase and download applications from the Google Play Store app.

The Google location programs let you track your current location, view real-time traffic situations, and receive detailed directions to your destination. They also provide search tools where you can locate places of interest or an address on a vector or aerial map, or view locations in street level. Press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > Maps icon or Navigation icon (blue arrow icon) to begin using the services.


How do I use YouTube?

View and share videos on one of the Web’s most popular video sites. Press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > YouTube icon to browse through and view available videos. Sign in with your Gmail account to upload your own videos.


How do I pair and connect with a Bluetooth-capable device?

1. Verify your Bluetooth is turned on. (Press the Home button > Menu key icon and tap Settings > Connections > Bluetooth to turn on Bluetooth.)

2. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap the check box next to your phone’s name to make it discoverable by other devices. Your phone must be visible to successfully pair with an external phone.

3. Tap Scan. (Your phone will display a list of discovered in-range Bluetooth phones.)

4. Tap a device from the list to initiate pairing.

5. Enter the passkey or PIN code, or verify the shared key, and tap OK.

6. The external device will then have to also accept the connection and enter your phone’s PIN code.

7. Once you’re paired with a device, your connection should launch. The Bluetooth connected icon shows your current connection status.


How do I share contacts, files, or pictures using Bluetooth?

1. Open the application containing the file you want to share (for example, press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > Contacts icon (orange person icon)).

2. Locate the file or entry you want to share.

– You can send pictures and videos directly from the camera or from Gallery, Calendar events, Contacts (as vCards), music tracks, and voice recordings. Not all devices will be able to receive all file types.

3. Depending on the application, tap the Share icon > Bluetooth or press and hold the file and select Share (or Send) > Bluetooth.

4. Tap the name of the device to which you’re sending the file. (If prompted, tap Yes to turn Bluetooth on.)


How do I add music to my Music folder?

Before you can listen to music with the Music application on your phone, you will need to load songs into your Music folder.

1. Use the supplied USB cable to connect your phone to an available USB port on your computer.

2. When you see the USB icon in the Notifications status, pull open the Notifications panel and make sure Connected as a media device is the selected mode.

3. On your computer, locate your phone’s internal storage, and open or create the Music folder.

4. Copy music files from your computer to the music folder.

5. When you are done, follow your computer’s procedures to safely remove the drive, and then disconnect the phone from the USB cable.


How do I listen to music on my phone?

1. Press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > Music icon (musical note icon).

2. Tap Songs, Playlists, Albums, Artists, Music square, or Folders.

3. Tap a song to begin playing.

– Use the controls at the bottom to play, pause, or skip songs.

How do I set up social networking accounts (e.g., Facebook, Twitter)?

Before using your social networking accounts, you may need to download them from the Google Play Store app.

1. Press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > Play Store icon (shopping bag icon).

2. Browse or search for the app you want to download, for example Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

3. Touch the app and then touch Install. Follow the prompts to download and install the app.


How do I use social networking accounts?

1. Press the Home button and tap Apps icon (grid icon) > Facebook (or Twitter, Instagram, etc.).

2. Follow the onscreen instructions to sign into your account, for example, by entering a user name and password.

3. Update your status, post pictures, follow your favorite tweets, and more, all on your Galaxy S 4.

Note: Tap the Menu key icon to access settings for your apps, depending on the account type.

Tip: You can add Home screen widgets for many social networking apps. Touch and hold an empty space, touch Apps and widgets > Widgets and then drag the widget to the empty space.
